Drums, MIDI, US-144 Tascam

Hey there everyone! This is my first time posting on the Apple Discussions board and I'm new to macs, I hope someone out there can maybe help me with my little problem!
I've got my electronic drumset (Roland V-drums TD-6) hooked up through the TASCAM US-144 usb/midi audio interface. The usb hooked up to the computer, the Line Thru/In cable going from the drums to the Tascam as well as the MIDI cable. The latest drivers installed, and Garage band recognizes the signal sent from the interface. When i hit one of the drums you can see the light go up, so i know the signal is getting form the drums to the computer.
The problem is i can hear absoloutely no sound? When i try to record there are little dark spots on the time where i was playing (sort of like a Piano Roll i guess??) but theres just no sound.
So my question is *+how do i get sound to come through the computer so i can record straight from my drums to garageband without having all the slaps the pads make in a live recording?+*
Any help really appreciated!

Wow, sorry it took so long to get back but i went to go take a closer look, and voila changed the output settings so it was just input and it works
thanks so much!
You wouldnt happen to know if you can transfer the sounds from the roland too, do you? it seems like you can only use the presets from the drum kits.
Thanks again

  • No signal from a Roland SPD-8 drum midi controller

    Hello!
I've just purchased a Roland SPD-8 drum MIDI controller. It's quite old, so I've had to get the MIDI to USB converter to connect it, but my computer is picking it up.
No matter what I try, I can't get a signal from it in Logic Pro X. I have a USB MIDI keyboard which works perfectly after being plugged in, but this is one's impossible! I'm lost. What are the correct settings for this? What have I missed??

Spotlight doesn's search Library folders, maybe that's why you don't find anything. Take a look at these two folders and remove anything that you don't need (i.e. remove anything that you don't know - in a basic setup, there should be nothing in there):
    HD/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers
    HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components

10 gig and a quad core is well within the specs. I have even tried ezdrummer and it is the same, the video will explain

In the manual (link) it says:
This setting lets you select the Trigger Setup that is best matched
to the particular drum set you are using.
If you switch the type of drum set you are using with the
DTXPRESS III, make sure you use the procedure below to select
    an appropriate setup.
    1. Press the [TRIG] button to display the Trigger
    Setup display.
    2. Use the [VALUE–]/[VALUE+] buttons to select

  • ELECTRONIC DRUM MIDI PROBLEM!

we really want the drummer to be able to control his sound via his interface, which is part of the elec set. right now, only i control the sounds via garageband. how can i override this so that he can control the fx?
    thanks!

If you are using the drum module's audio outs, he should have control over all his module's parameters.
GB's parameters aren't transferable. The best I can offer is one of MyMac's earlier suggestions about trying an AU plug in called MidiO to send Midi data out to the drum machine.
I'm not familiar enough with Midi to help you set that up though...

  • GarageBand snare drum midi mapping help

I am trying to get my simmons sdxpress to trigger only the rimshot snare sound. I am using midibridge to map the notes correctly, but the person helping me that developed the app says "There is a problem mapping the rimshot. That is, GB will sound both the
existing snare *and* the rimshot with this mapping. This is because
GB insists on listening to your simmons no matter what and it is not
possible to switch that off. So, it will react to the simmons events
directly as well as the remapped ones from MidiBridge. This is not likely
to work so well for you I think, but I have left that mapping in anyway so
you can see if that works. If not, just removed that 'rimshot' line from
the rules to stop that mapping." Is there any way to get the rimshot sound only to be triggered from the drumset? Thank you

The best answer to this problem so far has been to load the BFD2 audio data to a separate external HD.
After reading a ton and getting assistance from another site its clear that GB and a large streaming programs such as BFD2 can NOT function together without a more powerful set up.
Note: Using GB and its rhythm Jam pack works just fine. I prefer not to use GB sounds for drums.
If you have electronic drums and your looking at issues, try using a separate HD.

  • How can I record and edit using an electronic drum kit to midi on a windows based PC (That I will eventually use in Garageband)?

    Hi there
I know this isnt really a Garagband question and possibly a little off GB topic, but in the end I will be using the midi file in Garageband so it kind of is
I'm new to Midi recording so please bare with me.
I am looking to do the following.
Have my drummer record from his Session Pro DD505 electronic drum kit (which has a midi out) into his windows based computer via midi (He owns a usb to midi cable), so that he can then email me the midi file, so I can add it to a song in Garageband on my Mac. I will then choose the sound of the drum kit myself from Garageband.
He needs to be able to correct any errors he has made in the midi file before emailing it me, either by re-recording sections or by moving the incorrect drum notes to the correct beat.
I guess he would need to be able to hear the song that he is playing along to, and possibly have a click track playing at the same time.
So I guess what I am looking for is some FREE windows software to be able to record midi drum files into, that can also be used to edit the midi file after. A separate free piece of software could also be used to edit the drum midi files instead though.
I know that I can correct the midi drum files myself in Garageband, but I would rather my drummer spent the time doing this, not myself.
I've spent a bit of time googling this today but keep bringing up the wrong things as I'm probably using the wrong search terms.
    So, any ideas?
    thanks

You will be able to use the Cubase AI4 with any audio interface. Another option is to look for a 30 day demo of software like Reaper http://www.reaper.fm/index.php It won't stop after 30 days... just your concience needs to respond
Problem is though that if all you want to record is the MIDI then your drummer will also need some drum sounds in the form of a software instrument or a 3rd party VST to load into the recording software. So another program that comes uncrippled but has drum sounds in it is Ableton Live http://www.ableton.com/products However this can be an intimidating piece of software and it also cripples itself after 30 days.

  • Recording to midi into Garageband with an electro drum kit?

    Hey all
I thought I'd have a play around with a few things this evening on Garageband after work, but wanted to confirm a few things before I start anything.
Ive got an electro drum kit with midi capabailities and also have a Midi to USB lead.
I am assuming I can take a midi in/out from the electro kits brain through the Midi to USB lead into my Mac.
Connect my headphones to my Mac and play with my kit using the in built Garageband drum sounds?
Moving on from this I am assuming I can record the drum midi notes too directly into Garageband (to edit later if necessary)?
I'm guessing that if the above is possible the pads on the kit may not correspond to whats sounds are being played in GB so I will have to remap?
Moving on further from this I also have a Akai EIE Pro interface with 4 channel inputs, so I was going to attempt to record a full live 3 piece band.
(2 vox, 1 guitar, 1 bass) with the Akai, and then also record the midi drums at the same time.
I am assuming that this is also possible?
    Thanks

I am assuming I can take a midi in/out from the electro kits brain through the Midi to USB lead into my Mac.
Connect my headphones to my Mac and play with my kit using the in built Garageband drum sounds?
Yes. Caveat: the Midi to USB "lead" that you mention is actually an interface that might need a driver to work with your computer.
Moving on from this I am assuming I can record the drum midi notes too directly into Garageband (to edit later if necessary)?
    Yes.
I'm guessing that if the above is possible the pads on the kit may not correspond to whats sounds are being played in GB so I will have to remap?
Exactly. Does your drumkit allow to assign a midi note to every pad? Then you could adjust it to trigger the correct GB sounds. An alternative is a midi mapping software like MidiPipe that transforms the incoming midi signal (I haven't tried it personally).
Yes. Again: make sure you have the right driver for the interface that corresponds to your OS version.
    Happy playing around!

  • Syncing Tascam DA78 via midi to Logic

    Hi,
I am trying to sync a Tascam DA78 to my Logic 8 studio via midi. I can get the Tascam to sync in "park" but my Logic transport won't control the Tascam DA78.The tascam will chase to wherever I am in my logic project, but I am trying to bounce in sync and need to start the DA78 from Logic I believe.
I must be missing something...is there something somewhere that says it's ok for Logic transport to control the DA78?
    Thanks.
    -Tim

    still stumped!
So...I got the tape deck icon in the top position. It lets me arm a track on the Tascam (which I don't need to do...I need to playback only)
I can record onto that tape deck icon track..sort of. It records a blank track (labled MMC recording) and stops at bar 5 consistently. And the logic playhead bar does not move during this process.
some other settings I'm not sure of:
    >Midi cable into Tascam DA78 from midi sport USB interface. Do I need any other midi cables going?
    >Tascam will now kick on from transport as long as I have Sync Mode internal and auto enable external sync checked. But having this checked disables Logic transport from starting Logic. I can control the Tascam only with auto enable checked. When I uncheck it Logic will then respond as normal but the Tascam will only locate to the playhead and not chase Logic in sync which is what I am after....I think. Unless that tapedeck icon track somehow records without moving the playhead in Logic. As I said...it records blank even with the correct analog inputs routed and stops at 5 bars.
    thats it for now.
    Thanks (again)
    -Tim

  • Separate midi drum channels not showing in piano roll, only kick

hey ya'll!  I separated my midi drum notes on to separate mudi tracks. But now only the kick track shows up in the piano roll window.
I am using AD and need to be able to edit the drum midi tracks. I use the piano roll window for this. Can someone help me?
    Jon

You can select multiple regions in the arrange window and they will all show up in the piano roll. If you color each drum region a different color and select "region colors" in the piano roll view menu you can easily tell which regions are whoch.

  • Tascam US-122 midi interface problem

    Hi,
A week ago I hooked up a US-122 midi interface to my iMac and it worked perfectly. Tonight for some reason, I'm not getting response from it. The USB green light is on and the iMac is detecting it. When I try to play music using iTunes, the song won't begin if the output is set to the US-122. Soon as I change the audio output setting to "Built-in output" iTunes works fine.
I've taken out the driver and reinstalled it. Still no luck. It worked fine for a week, don't understand why it just suddenly stopped working.
    Thanks ahead for any help
    Manny

I'm agree if most of Apple product is more compatible with those kind of devices
But as home musician :) I'm not agree if you think that its not compatible with Windows 8.1, I would say its not compatible yet, because most of that device launched before Windows 8.1 release, some of the manufactured will be update their driver
trough software update or via firmware update (unless that product is discontinue or don't have anymore support)
Example for your Midi devices which TASCAM US-122 Audio/MIDI interface, even that product already discontinued and Windows 8.1 just launched last year. Most of this midi devices is plug and play, its supposed to be depend software that you are using like
    Cubase, garage band or else
My suggestion is find the reliable audio software which support to Windows 8.1 first, and do most of audio processing outside the PC using preamp or mixer, and made the input to the PC using single input soundcard (external or internal)
I've proofed that my Behringer mixer work with both my Windows 8.1 and MacBook via Cube base and garage band. I put all the instrument to mixer and via build in external sound card from Behringer I plug it to my PC, so I Control everything from my mixer
Unless you want to buy high tech mixer with wireless capability it will be awesome, like presonus or else
OS is not the limitation, you can install your Windows PC with Mac OS also you can installed your Mac with Windows OS. Update your Windows PC chipset to get the latest USB peripheral and PCI controller device list
You should posted this question to audio forum, not here, so other professional sound engineer will assist you better. Good luck anyway

  • Tascam Us-144mkII MIDI problem...

I am trying to use a Tascam US-144mkII with Garageband. I am getting no MIDI in Garageband.
    - The keyboard is sending MIDI to the Tascam, I see lights.
    - The Tascam is powered, I see the USB light
    - I can use a microphone to record in Garageband.
The problem is that the MIDI isn't working and when I look in GarageBand preferences it says "MIDI Status: 0 input(s) detected"
    Any ideas?

You're right. It wasn't recommended. I should've said it is supported.

Anyone with any suggestions, I'd still love some insight into this.

  • Midi Drum Tracking

Hey guys, I was hoping somebody could help me out with this. I am recording songs that are recorded from my yamaha motif to logic. I can get the drums and their midi information onto a midi track in logic, but then all aspects of the drums are on one midi channel. Snare, bass, toms, cymbols, are all on one midi track. So I cant pan or what not to any individual drum element. Please let me know if there is a better way to get the drums in logic or if there is a function in logic that I can use to fix this. Thnx.

What you can do is take the drum midi track in logic and mute everything but the kicks, - then play that and record the kik drums from the motif. Then mute everything but the snare, and do the process again, etc..
You could also tell use the Logic command to split tracks by pitch, that would automatically seperate all the kiks, from snares, hats, etc.. But you most likely want to keep the 3 hat notes on one track, and probably keep the toms as a mixed stereo pair. I usually split my drums into, kik, snare, hats, tom mix, and cymbal mix.
That way you will have all the motif drums isolated, inside of Logic now...

  • Editing midi in the media window ?

In my screen shot you can see my drum track is highlighted. But in the lists window I can't seem to find my way back to just the drum midi info to do my editing. No matter what I do. This was never a problem before. Can someone tell me what I screwed up. Logic Pro. Thanks.

I can see it. The forum has become buggier again lately.
Bill: hit the Link button on both your List Editor and Arrange window.

  • Midi issues

I'm using Logic Express 7 with latest upgrade, Roland D-20 keyboard, TD-20 Drum Set connected with a MidiSport 4X4. I can record midi with the D-20. I can even record multimidi tracks. But when I go to record with the TD-20 to lay out a drum midi track, the TD-20 triggers sounds from the D-20.
Does anyone know how to solve tis problem? I want to be able to use these instruments individually for midi recording. Hoping this makes sense to someone, I'll appreciate any help you can give me.
    Thanks,

    Hey man,
Thanks for your reply. And thanks for telling me LE doesn't support more than one external midi device. This being true, I'm really disappointed with Apple because when I bought the software I specifically asked this question and they told me either version supported multiple external midi devices.
My set up in full is as follows:
    TD-20
    XV-88
    D-20
    SC-55
... all connected to the Midi 4X4 interface. I was able to verify with someone else's equipment, that all these devices work fine. It's the software. I've configured manually the devices in the Midi software that OSX has so the computer recognizes them, and I've scanned and tested each and everyone. They all work, provide signal.
What I don't understand is why does their Apple manual indicate that LE does have capacity to have more than one external midi device functioning simultaneously. I wish I could have somewhere to bring it up to Apple.
Anyway, as far as the local off, I understand what you say, but when I do that, I can't hear what I try recording. Do the double notes actually get recorded? I haven't seen that happen yet. I have heard the "flanger" effect, but that's about it.
In any case, hope this makes sense. Sorry for the "wining" and thanks for "listening". If you come across other solutions, I'd appreciate them.
    Thanks,

  • Garageband iPad midi editor doesn't display all the sounds that I used

I used a Korg nano keyboard to record some drums into Garageband using Garageband's own drums. But somehow the snaredrum that I both hear and see in the overall editor is not dislpayed in the drum midi-editor. This renders me unable to edit my snaredrum. I could, of course, just use another key and have the snare drums displayed, but I just wanted to inform Apple about this issue and hopefully they'll fix it.
