DSL and Wireless...something isn't right

Hi to everyone and I REALLY hope someone can help me (us)!
Long story short, I had my desktop and laptop connected to a Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G, using my DSL modem (no other high speed option available) and my son wanted to find the WEP key to hook up his XBox 360. In the process, he reset the router and we lost all our wireless connections. Well, danged my luck but I broke up with the IT guru who set it up for me in the first place....
I have tried to follow the support directions thru Linksys (we don't have a manual) and the computers are doing the weirdest things. For a day, they worked perfectly, then the laptop would work wirelessly if the internet connection was repaired each time, but the desktop had to be hardwired to the DSL ~ it won't see an wireless internet connection at all.
My site is not secured (don't think the cows have internet access) but I'd like it locked down and I need to get everything connected wirelessly if possible. We have a Wii I'd like to get wireless ~ it can see the internet connection but won't connect.  I have been all over the internet trying to figure out why my router is acting the way it is and everything I've found says I'm setting it all up right.
Do I have a bad router? Sorry, I'm not usually this inept with computers but this is stumping me. I can navigate thru them, I can follow directions and can read but please help? I'll try not to be a total moron (I'm terminology deficient) if you can help.....

Try the below mentioned wireless settings.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
- Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
- Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
- Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
This should fix the issue.

  • DSL and wireless ~ love/hate relationship

Well, I'm back.  Starting a new post but adding the old so those interested in this little soap opera love/hate relationship between my DSL and wireless WRT54G router can follow along without commercials.....
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/DSL-and-Wireless-something-isn-t-right/m-p/331539...
It's becoming a tiring game, trying to second guess my router....what will restore the connection today?  Everything is working wireless BUT the connection needs to repaired continually:
The Wii won't connect so we boot up either the laptop or the desktop computer, then all of a sudden the Wii connects.
The desktop takes forever (around 10 minutes) to connect but once it does, it either works fast or each page load will take forever....never know till you're in there working.
Sometimes turning the wireless router and DSL off will reset it and it will work fine.
Sometimes running a network diagnostic resets the system.
Sometimes doing a repair on the network will do it.
We did learn that plugging in the ethernet chord makes for instant access, so we know its not the DSL or the ISP itself.
any suggestions?  Is it time to break up with my old wireless router and find a hot new young thing?  Or is there something else going on that I haven't worked out yet?
Thanks for your help in advance as always!!

Have you tried upgrading the router's firmware...?
You can try by upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware. After upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it from scratch.

  • Trouble with Qwest DSL and wireless router

Just got Qwest DSL yesterday. Connected the Actiontec M1000 modem directly to our IMac and things worked fine. Unfortunately, our office doesn't have a phone line and the permanent home of the modem is going to be elsewhere in the house. I tried to connect our D-Link wireless router WBR-2310 Rangebooster G to the Actiontec, phone jack--ethernet cable---actiontec---ethernet cable---d-link wan jack. Airport can "see" the wireless network we had setup before we switched to qwest dsl, but cannot connect to the internet.
I'm assuming there is communication problem between the dsl modem and wireless router.
How should my network settings be changed? Do I need to reconfigure the modem, or the wireless router, or both?

Now, I must say that the 3mbps download speed I'm apparently paying for has never been achieved. The fastest I got was 1.4mbps when hardwired. Now with the wireless I'm only around 750 kbps. I'm only twenty feet away and one wall from the router. Any suggestions on increasing this performance?
Very few sites can actually send you 3mb/s. You can test your connection here:
    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
    or here:
    http://speedtest.net/
If your speeds don't seem to be inline then you will have to deal with your broadband provider.
At 54mb/s your wireless is not the bottleneck, the internet is.
I'm getting 6mb DSL and it tests perfect, but I wanted the extra speed because I'm running 6 or 8 machines online at all times, and you usually get a faster upload speed with the deal. This can be very important for sharing files and sending emails with attachments, etc.

  • Image downloads onto iPad. Something isn't right!

Have tried, with appropriate permissions and access, downloading photographic images from a site. The site stats show images have been downloaded by me but they don't show up on the iPad. Where are the images? Please help.

The iPad's version of Safari doesn't handle file downloads per se -- except that by touching and holding individual images, you can download them to the iPad's photos app.
But it doesn't sound as if that's what you're doing. Can you give more information as to what mechanism you're using to download the images?
You might also try the alternate web browser "Terra," which I haven't used myself but which as of v.1.2 purports to handle downloads of a variety of file types seamlessly.

  • HELP... something isn't right!

I don't know what happened, but my applications are not matching in the applications folder under my main account home and the hard drive. For example....
I go Home Name > Applications > nothing there
I go Macintosh HD > Applications > all apps are there
I've never had that happen before.
Maybe not the correct fix, I copy pasted all my apps from the Macintosh HD/Applications folder to my Home Name/Applications folder so they match. But that didn't fix the issue, because when I installed a new app, it only showed up on the Macintosh HD/Applications folder.
What happened? I can't think of anything I've done lately to cause this, other then install Adobe Flex 3 and any updates from Apple. I've done a disk utility check of the drive and repaired permissions and everything looks ok there. What happened? How do I fix this?

You should not have done anything until you understand the problem. Doing things without understanding what is being done is absolutely wrong.
If I understand you correctly you clicked your User name in Finder and did not find a folder titled Applications. This is correct. There is no "local" applications folder.
You should have an Applications button in the Finder sidebar. This is the Applications folder you also see in the main system folder reached by clicking the sidebar item usually labeled "Macintosh HD" There is no other Applications folder.
Not knowing what you did - did you copy the files, move them, alias them etc., I can't tell you how to unto it but you should fix it before installing any updates or anything else.
Just be very careful what you do on a computer. Doing is easy, undoing is the problem.
If the files in your "new" Applications folder are copies you can probably delete them. If they are anything else, then you need to explain a bit more what you did.

  • Trouble with DSL and modem

The DSL light on my modem started blinking today and the internet light won't come on at all. I rebooted everything and checked all the plugs but it is still not working. It has been out for a few hours now.

Very similar issues for me. Had just switched last week from Comcast to Verizon's basic DSL only, no phone. Although super slow, Internet worked until 10/31/2011 morning for a week. It was so slow and streaming was impossible, so called 10/31 to upgrade to Enhanced DSL. Verizon confirmed that it upgraded in the afternoon of 10/31. But internet was not working when i checked. Called 1-800-Verizon 3 times during the day on 10/31. Called again at 10 pm on 10/31 to create a trouble ticket.  A lot of the folks at Verizon have no clue about account info, my service, etc. Finally, a Tech support lady said she created a ticket after she went through remote test of my set up for 30 minutes between 10 - 10:30 pm on Oct 31.  She did not tell me what the root cause was. Basically, since 10/31 morning, the router/modem has power, DSL line on and wireless light on, but no internet light.  Then occasionally, the lights go through some changs and I see internet light on for 5 seconds.  Then it goes off and go back to power, dsl and wireless lights only. When internet light is on for 5 secs, internet is available.  Then of course, it is gone.  This has been repeating for last 2 days. It is Nov 2 and still there is no internet.
When checking Verizon website or chatting with them, Verizon hardly gives correct status or sometime says information not available.  I don't know why they cannt figure out the problem and fix it quickly.

Ok, first thing, why are you doing anything with WAMP or XAMPP when you're running a Mac? MAMP should be what you want unless you're not explaining part of what you are trying to do.
2nd thing, I haven't used MAMP in a while, but there are two possibilities for not seeing what you want to see once you have MAMP turned on. One possibility is that you already have "Web Sharing" turned on in your Sharing Preference Pane. If that is the case, port 80 will already be taken and you'll be seeing the default Apache install (files are stored at /Library/WebServer/Documents/). This would push MAMP to either not turn on it's web serving capabilities, or to push it to another port. The other possibility is that MAMP defaults to another port anyway. So instead of localhost, you might have to type in localhost:8080 or something similar. I believe the control panel that gets installed can take you to the currently MAMP-served page, and it can also help you change which port your serving on.
80 is the default port for web serving and the ONLY port that will let you get straight to the server without having to type in webaddress.com:port# instead of just webaddress.com.

  • Itunes and wireless devices no longer show up in upper right corner of itunes window

Help! My Internet service was interupted last week and when it returned my iTunes and wireless devices no longer show up in upper right corner of the iTunes window.  I finally figured out how to get both of my wireless devices to show up on the left hand column under devices, but nothing else shows up now in the upper right corner!  I cannot for the life of me figure this one out and the tech manual is not helping at all.  Help!

If you have the left-hand sidebar showing then that is where the store and your devices will show can be selected - if you press option-command-S if you are using a Mac, control-S on a PC, then the sidebar should be hidden and the store and device should go back to the top right. Is that what you mean ?

  • HT1338 I download Adobe Flash but it doesn't install. Each time I encounter something that needs Adobe Flash it tells me I don't have it. I am getting tired downloading it and then it isn't there.

    install_flash_player_10_osx.dmg
    install_flash_player_10_osx-1.dmg
    install_flash_player_10_osx-2.dmg
    install_flash_player_10_osx-3.dmg
    install_flash_player_10_osx-4.dmg
    etc to -9
Those are the ones you downloaded. Ten times, apparently. Since install_flash_player_10_osx.dmg already existed, the next download was appended with -1. The next -2, etc. They'll all be identical, so it doesn't matter which one you use. Though I'd go with the last one as it may be a slightly updated version from the first download, depending on how long ago you did the first one.
A .dmg file is a Disk Image. When you double click them, they open up a pseudo drive on the desktop. When you open one of these ten items, the Flash installer will appear in a file window. Run it to install Flash. Then close the file window (displaying from the psuedo drive) and then put the "drive" in the trash to dismount it. You can then delete all of those.
Looks like you also downloaded the Adobe Reader twice. Versions 10.1.2 and 10.1.3. Also Skype, whatever the Thomson thing is, and an unnecessary Flash uninstaller (the Flash installer will put an uninstaller in the Utilities folder).

    If not:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

    Then
Does the iPod connect to/see other networks? (you were not clear)
Does the iPod see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iPod connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router

This is a new issue on an old setup. The mac was recently upgraded to maverick. thanks
Say no more.. upgrading to Mavericks.. any upgrade install is prone to issues.. the Mavericks one is the worst of any recent upgrades.
Lets just try and isolate the problem.
In the setup of the AE, give different names to the two wireless bands.. so go into the airport utility.. click the AE, Click edit.. click the wireless tab.. and now type in a new name.
    Try AE24ghz
Then click the wireless options and change the name for the 5ghz..
    Make it AE5ghz
    Then update the AE.
In the computer.. select either band.. and see if your other clients are affected if they use the band that the Mac is not using.
Alternatively turn off wireless in the macbook and use ethernet.. oh please please have a Mac with an ethernet port.. otherwise buy a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.. it is well worth having. wireless is never to be trusted.
