I am having trouble with setting up my Solaris 10 on the internet. I use SBC DSL for my Windows and Linux programs without any problems. But, the Solaris can't access eth0, or my modem for a direct connection, and I can't establish a proxy connection. I could run a successful ping on lo0, but with ifconfig, I get an empty page. A colleague/teacher said I might have to manually configure the NIC card, but I've had no success as of yet! Can anyone shed some light on the steps I need to take?

Internet DHCP/DNS issues with WRT1900ac
I've had a WRT1900ac now for about 2 weeks and the problems seem to be escalating. Need help. And yes, I've already read dozens of threads about these issues and nothing seems to be working.
Most of the problems seem to be centered around this DHCP/DNS issue that so many have been reporting.
First, the symptoms:
Galaxy S4 phones when connected via wifi have some apps that don't update (facebook and google play)
Some computers (both Win 7) will connect to the network just fine, both wired and wireless - but won't be able to get to the internet
I've spent the last 2-3 days of my life reading forums and trying all sorts of things to get this to work properly (like my old router) and I'm still stuck. Some things I've tried:
Firmware is up-to-date (latest version: 1.1.8.164461)
Manually assigned static DNS in router config settings (connectivity -> local network) to various combinations including the router address, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76 (I have comcast), OpenDNS addresses, etc. I read that the router address is not needed, so I stopped including it.
I manually assigned IPs and DNS on the Galaxy S4 phones and that seemed to work... but also seems unnecessary.
I've reserved DHCP addresses on the computers in question, that didn't seem to work, I also manually set DNS on one of the comupters (can't on the other... long story/not my computer) and that worked for a while and then stopped working.
The only way to get one of the computers on the internet now is to turn on the guest network (even though the computer is hard wired to the router), connect, and then the wired network works. No clue why this is, but my guess is that it needs the guest network for DNS, then it fails back over to the wired network. Once that happens, I can actually turn off the wifi on the computer and everything works great... until I reboot. Key point: I can't change any settings on that box other than entering in SSID/passphrase info for the wireless connection. I can connect to the regular (non-Guest) wifi just fine - I just can't ever get to the internet.
I've tried massaging DHCP settings on the router until I'm blue in the face - Static DNS, reserving DHCP addresses, hell I even put one of the computers in the DMZ to see if that would work and it still can't connect to the internet (it's worth noting that with my old router, Linksys WRT310N, the setup was literally plug-and-play - no hassle with any of this).
I've tried countless router reboots, factory resets, turning off my modem and router for 2+ minutes, and nothing is working.
I even read somewhere that if you modify your DHCP settings at all that the WRT1900ac stops doing DNS properly and breaks, so I even tried several "hard" factory resets and used all the default DHCP/DNS settings. And it worked... for a few hours.
Seriously, I'm at my wit's end. I'm out a lot of money on this thing and it's been one headache after another. Please help.I think for most people its a bad idea to hold out that hope, lol. It seems like a great piece of hardware but if you really need a router and don't want to have to 'play' with it, its probably not a good choice. I have an EA6900 that I am very happy with but it has the same restrictions as far as DNS and I really hate the idea that I am forced to use the smartwifi portal. I would really like for them to give me a choice of the old gui or the new one and let ME decide. Lots of routers to choose from out there now and new ones seem to be coming out all the time so do some reading and see if something suits you better. Good luck!

I am having issues with DNS settings changing on clients soon after allocation via DHCP. This is a workgroup only, no windows domain. DHCP is running from a Fortigate 60b which acts as the primary DNS server and Google DNS configured as secondary. The DHCP lease time is 8 days, these DNS changes can happen 3 times or more in a working day. The network consists of a single subnet, there is also an internal wireless network using Ubiquiti AP's.

here are few posts (quite some time ago) telling the same trouble:
The VPN Client does *NOT* restore the original DNS settings.
Upon BM3.8.2 Massimo told, that this is a bug in that version of the VPN
client. I face this issue with 3.8.16 and nwclient 4.91.4 with or without
the three currently available hotfixes [1]
Anybody else facing this trouble with the current VPN client release?
May be an older one works better, any experiences?
This trouble is fact even after clean disconnects. But it happens only now and then,
I might need to try it 50 times to see it once.
a followup in CMD boxes with ipconfig /all does show, that the times
to restore the original DNS settings vary from 2 to 30 seconds. Mostly about 5 seconds.
Massimo also told, that a "VPN-down" due to a Win-Shutdown can cause this: So is
there a possibility to trigger a "clean-VPN down" in the Win-shutdown sequence?
As a workaround I packed this line into all users "run" key:
netsh int ip set dns name="LAN-Verbindung" source=dhcp
so at least after a reboot it's corrected.

Anybody else who knows about that tool?
After doing some "teachment" to these VPN users the incidents of this
trouble didn't show up as frequent as before. So I assume, that one
reason might be this:
Scenario
VPN connect
PCA connect to host in corporate LAN
PCA full screen *SHOULD* be activated (ALT+ENTER)
working, working, working
shutdown PC in corporate LAN
close VPN tunnel
shutdown local home office PC.
When it was missed to activate PCA fullscreen without noticing this,
then the "remote" start button is not visible.
So instead of shutting down the remote PC, the local PC is shut down.
By that, the local shutdown is killing (not cleanly disconnecting)
the VPN client. When this happened (and I 100% can reproduce this)
after the next boot of the home office PC the VPN connect will *ALWAYS*
fail. After another reboot the VPN connect will succeed again without
any problems.
Is this a known issue? (I cannot find that TID I found before telling
missbehaviour when VPN connects are not disconnected clean. IIRC this
was something fixed in a VPN client version /several/ subversions ago)
Home Office PC = XPSP2+Hotfixes, VPN Client BM 3.8.16, nici from that
one first, now taken from NWClient 4.91.4, no difference.

No DNS settings when using built-in (hardwired) ethernet
Iv'e never had an issue with wireless operation, but now that a wired connection is necessary, I've run into something strange.
When connecting to a LAN with a DHCP source providing IP, router, DNS settings and more, the ibook fails to populate the DNS settings. I've got a valid IP and gateway address but no DNS servers are defined. I can put them in manually, but that would require me to change them each time I connect to a different wired network instead of relying on DHCP to do it's job.
Has anybody else seen this issue?If (as you say "is the case") this is a small, Netgear cable router...then the Netgear will be acting as DNS server. Likely the Netgear is getting a dynamic IP address from ISP, or it's been set with static values the ISP has told the homeowner to enter into the Netgear. Either way, DNS will be provided to Netgear, and the Netgear should be sending the DNS on down to the client computers.
(Do you "see" any DNS server info in the Configuration panel when you're on wireless? If so, what IP address is that DNS server?)
Why does it work wireless, but not cabled?
You really need to go into SystemPreferences>Network>Configure...and tell us what you have configured in the eth0, or built-in Ethernet section.
It might not be a bad idea to reboot the mac after you plug in ethernet...probably not needed, but we don't know enough about your network settings.
You also say you can't access sites by name. Can you hit a website using an IP address in the Safari addressBar? -
Java doesn't pick up system's DNS settings change until restarted
Hello,
I have a service running on a few Linux computers. Those computers have a NIC, which is configured with a fixed IP address. So /etc/resolv.conf contains the IP address of the LAN's DNS server. But most of the time, the computers are not plugged into the LAN at all. Instead, they connect themselves periodically to the Internet by establishing a ppp connection. When it happens, the ISP's DHCP server assign them new IP parameters, including their DNS server's IP address. And /etc/resolv.conf gets updated with this address.
But it seems that java doesn't take care of DNS change taking place during a run. Which means that my program (started at boot with no connectivity at all) tries to connect to some host, and obviously trigger an "UnknownHostException" (at that point it does try to contact the LAN's DNS server). Quite logical. Later, the ppp link become active. But my program still try to contact the LAN's DNS server, despite the new configuration in /etc/resolv.conf. As such, it will forever trigger UnknowHostExceptions, until it gets restarted (it will then pick up the new settings) or it is plugged back into the LAN (it will finally reach the LAN's DNS server).
This is quite a problem as during one single execution, the machine may encounter several DNS configuration changes, and this problem basically means that it will be impossible for my application to resolve any name at all.
So is there a way to tell Java to re-read the system wide DNS configuration? Or is there some option to prevent Java to "cache" the DNS server to use?
To demonstrate my problem, I've written a simple test case, see below.
To get the problem:
1) Put a bogus DNS server into your /etc/resolv.conf
2) Start the test program. Wait for some time: it will trigger UnknownHostExceptions.
3) Fix the entry in /etc/resolv.conf, and check it actually works (eg ping www.google.be)
4) Test program will continue to trigger UnknownHostExceptions forever.
One interesting fact is that someone tried this test on Windows, and didn't suffer from this behaviour, eg the application reacts to DNS system settings changes dynamically. So it looks like a Linux-only problem.

}Well, the nameservice property allowing to specify my DNS server of choice is interesting (I didn't know about those), but not very usable, as the DNS server to use is not known in advance (it may be whatever the ISP tells me to use at the time where the ppp link gets established). So no real solution there.
The fact that it caches /etc/resolv.conf content for 300s is very interesting, but having no possibility to impact on this duration really is a pity. There should be some kind of property to fix this behaviour. So as you say, a custom provider may be the only solution.
So far, the hack I use to get this working is based on code similar to this one (it is presented here in a similar form than my test case above). Obviously, reading the /etc/resolv.conf for each dns resolution is not an option in a real environment, but you get the idea.

Do DNS settings on Airport Extreme propagate to computers
I changed my DNS settings on AE ac. Are these settings supposed to change the settings on every computer on the LAN? If so, what conditions must prevail (e.g. Sys Pred>Network>Advanced must be unlocked)?
I've got clients on Ethernet (6) and WiFi (15). (Oh, this is a home.).
I know what it is like.. my router tells me I have 25 clients at the moment.. it is almost unbelievable in modern homes we have that much IP stuff connected.
I might otherwise have thought it was a business though.
I have double checked just now.. by using a test setup.
This is on a newly reconfigured airport (happens to be gen4 but that is not relevant).
In dhcp Internet mode.. and doing NAT and DHCP the default DNS server passed to the clients is the Apple router itself.
I have done these tests before but it is good to be reminded.
So I have this setup.
And was hoping the DHCP would see the DNS and would pass 8.8.4.4 to the clients. No such luck. Although the AE itself should use 8.8.4.4 and whatever secondary DNS you set.
There is no place to actually set this up DNS server to the clients in the network tab.. it is typical apple minimalist.. DHCP Range being the only possible thing to set..
So when I check the ethernet on the computer I get
So the AE has substituted itself as the main DNS server in the clients. there is no check box to force ISP dns or any other dns values.
This is pretty much default on any router.. that it will use itself as a dns cache instead of directing clients to the internet directly.
The actual dns value used by the AE for lookups will be the one set in the internet tab though.. so it does not need to be set to ISP..
Is that going to work for you.. ??
If not you can force the clients to accept the DNS values via dhcp from the Airport router but only if you use static IP.
Now the rub.. you cannot use static IP on the main router, plugged into a cable router. .you must use DHCP so that will not work.
What you need is a different primary router.. or use one of your express in a different mode. ie doing Static IP.

I have suggested it for a situation here bridge was unreliable.. but I use this method to assign static IP and special DNS values to clients in my network that require access to US for TV don't you know. -
DNS Settings for Westell 9100EM Router
I have continuously been experiencing issues with Verizon's preset DNS setting when using DHCP, and therefore plan to use a different set of DNS servers (I hear that 4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.5 are recommended in the DC area where I live).
I wonder, however, where to change the DNS setting in the router. The 9100EM has primary and secondary DNS settings both for the LAN (i.e. the internal network) (under My Network - Network Connections - Network (Home/Office)) and for the external WAN network (under My Network - Network Connections - Broadband Connection (Ethernet)).
Are the settings for both networks supposed to be identical, or can I use different settings for the LAN and for the WAN.
Any recommendations which DNS servers I should choose for either network connection?

If you are trying to do that in the router's UI, no kidding.
If you are trying to do that on a computer behind the router, perhaps the router does not act as a DNS Server relay.

SBS 2011 no longer issues DHCP leases: DHCP, DNS, and AD Errors
Hi all. On early 8/13/2012 and into the morning, our UPS failed several times. The battery seems to be fine but the unit was shutting off power to the unit which means the (Windows SBS 2011 Standard) server shut off unexpectedly several times.I replaced
the UPS.
Now I'm trying to figure out what in the world this did to the server. It seems DHCP, DNS, and AD all have issues, as seen in the logs below. The client PC's are going offline one-by-one because the leases are expiring and it can't connect to the server
to renew. When trying to start the DHCP service, I get a 20013 error saying it cannot be started.
So I attempted to follow a kb article and repair the database but that didn't work because it seems the Jetpack utility is not in SBS 2011? And even at that, I'm thinking it may not even be a corrupted DHCP database due to the other errors in the event log.
This is a small office and I only know enough to be dangerous but usually I can just follow a kb to fix any issues. But there are so many errors, this one has me stumped.. Could any Server whizzes identify the big picture here?

DNS Settings have Changed with Snow Leopard Update
Before I upgraded to SL, I was able to append a DNS server to the list of servers that my MacBook Pro acquired from the DHCP server. This way, I didn't have to manually edit my DNS settings all the time when I was in the office and wanted to access our lab network by name. Now after the upgrade, I have to remove all manually entered DNS servers before it will use the DNS servers given to it by the DHCP server. Is there a way that I can always append my lab DNS server to the list given to me by DHCP?

JohnI am on or office wireless network which handles the DHCP lease and DNS addressing, but I am an engineer in the office and access the lab often and we have another DNS server in the lab to handle all of the lab network. The Sales folk don't need access to the lab so the DHCP server doesn't give out the lab dns server... I would like to access the lab via name, not IP, so I need the lab DNS server on my list of servers. If I can't append this to the DHCP list, I have to manually add all three every time I am in the office. I am frequently out at customer/vendor sites and use thier wireless, so I get thier DNS list.
Short answer is I need our lab DNS server on the list and frequently move from network to network... I want it to work the way it was before the "upgrade", which wasn't much of an "upgrade" if it breaks this. I want my Leopard back.

DNS settings change when restoring image
Situation: In one of our computers we changed the DNS settings from static
to dynamic (DNS through DHCP). We checked these settings and they worked.
When restoring the image on a other computers the settings are back to
static. How is this possible? We have tried all but we can't find the
sollution.

TS1317 Internet Connectivity Issue - specifically with the DNS settings
Hi there,
I'm wondering if someone can help me resolve an internet connectivity issue on my MacBook Pro.
It appears to be a problem specifically with the DNS settings. I am connected to the internet but can only reach a website by typing in the IP address, not the domain name. The error messahe says: "Unable to resolve server's DNS address."
Regardless of whether I use Wifi, 3G modem or cable, i get the same error.
Operating System is Mac OSX Version 10.6.7

ThanksIt sounds like your MacBook Pro has either incorrect or missing DNS IP address information in it network profile. Let's start with your wireless connection. You would find these in System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > DNS tab
If your main Internet router is performing as the DHCP server, it would provide the DNS IP addresses (typically from your ISP) on this tab. You may have two or more addresses listed. If they are grayed, that means that the addresses are coming from the DHCP server.
In the following example screen shot, I am using DNS servers provided by OpenDNS. Notice that they are grayed as they are being provided by my main Internet router. Again, these should be either ones provided by your ISP or ones you purposely set up, like my OpenDNS ones. -
What do I enter for DNS settings?
I was looking through my mail log files and discovered my domain wasn't being resolved correctly. So I did sftp in Terminal and it returned an error that mail.myserver.com could not be resolved.
My servers IP address 192.168.88.8 and my DNS Server's DNS settings are 192.168.88.8 and 127.0.0.1. Is this correct?
ThanksExternal forward and reverse DNS both need to be correct for your mail to be routed into your server and particularly for your outbound mail to be accepted by remote mail servers (and not perceived as a spam engine), and your local network needs to have DNS functional for at least the server. The reverse DNS inherently involves your ISP.
Put another way, yes, you need DNS for a traditional setup.
These days, it's usually safest to assume that everything needs DNS.
If you're not on a business-class DSL service, you'll end up establishing a relay through an authorized mail server somewhere else; with what amounts to relay through an SMTP mail server elsewhere with valid DNS. -
I have a small office, served by an SA520 and Road Runner cable modem.
What's the recommended setting for our users DNS? Right now our DHCP (via the built in router DHCP server) passes out it's own address as the DHCP server. So client machines point to 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server. Our WAN config on that router then points to the Road Runner DNS servers.
Would it be better performance if we passed down the direct Road Runner DNS servers to the clients? Or even the google open DNS servers? It seems like performance would be better if they went directly to a DNS server rather than proxying through the router.
ThanksDNS is a distributed system to allow load balancing across multiple dns servers. basically the sa520 is a caching dns proxy. The way it works is:
client wants to connect to something (www.cisco.com for example). The client looks in local dns cache, if it has resolved this recently it will use the locally cached IP to connect. (fastest)
if the local cache has timed out or does not have an entry for www.cisco.com, the client goes to its dns server (sa520), if the site is cached there, the SA sends the dns reply back and then the client goes to the site. If the site is not cached, the sa520 will go to it's resolver (Roadrunner), and RR dns may go to it's resolver, and the process continues until the dns process gets to a server that knows the .com .cisco. and www (these might be 3 different servers)
but, and here's where the local caching comes in to make it faster. if you have multiple devices on the network it is likely someone else has already gone to this site, it is cached locally and the router can return a result without resolving over the internet.
This is more important with web pages that have multiple http connections to multiple sites (facebook icons, ads, twitter links, graphics, etc).
Local caching also puts less of a load on the root internet servers, or googles dns.
for a middle config, you can point your SA520 wan dns settings to 8.8.8.8 (google) and see if it impacts your performance, but it really depends on the mix of dns requests that are happening on your network.
generally local caching on the router pointing to a fast dns is the best mix to reduce traffic and DNS querys, but still respond quickly.
Note, a lot of 'slow internet' issues are really caused by slow dns resolution (along with bad programming of web pages with 10s or hundreds or links on them.
