DSL/Laptop/Cell Phone

I am thinking about giving up my Comcast DSL at home since my cell (smart)  phone receives a duplicate of everything from my laptop. I have a coffee shop with wireless ability down the street. I have a G mail address, gmail calendar all on cell. I am not too teky. I want to upgrade my cell soon but need advise on the route to take since their are so many avenues. Do not get great coverage with cell at home. I saw the HTC docking station as a possibility with keyboard. Now I am learning about roku for my tv and incorporating my tv into all my communications. I have Comcast cable. Can someone give me some advise and help me put a system together on a limited budget that will put me into a more updated format.

First, be aware that you probably do not have unlimited data on your phone.  In addition, using your phone as a data modem for your computer requires a seperate data account.
As far as using the coffe shop's open wi-fi...are you completely unaware of the security implications of using it?  It is an open hot spot, and you are prone to spoofing, man-in-the middle, DOS and other attacks.
If I were you, I would bundle comcast cable and internet...go for the highest speed package you can afford, and make sure that you are indeed getting unlimited data.  When at home, you can use both yrou phone and your computer on your wireless network.
Your smartphone, even with a dock, will never replace a computer.  You need more storage than is available on your phone.

  • Connecting laptop to internet via cell phone

I heard i can use my cell phone to connect my laptop to the internet, i currently have a lg envy touch , with a 25 megabyte plan which would not be enough as I am wanting to get rid of current dsl plan and wanting to use my wireless plan as my only paid source of internet connection in my home.
I can upgrade plan to unlimited for 29.99 per month which is what i currently pay for my home dsl.  I was told by verizon rep i could use a smartphone ( droid/ droid incredible) to set up a wireless connection in which i could also use my ipod and nintendo dsi to connect to internet as well at the same time as the laptop.
So my thinking is i add another line to my 2100 minute family plan for additional monthly cost of 9.99 get the droid for 199.99 with the unlimited plan of 29.99 bringing my total monthly bill to 170.00 minus taxes. I currently only use about 900-1000 minutes but the savings of dropping minutes just doesnt seem worth it to me as I have children on my plan and their minutes will increase at some point and I would rather be locked in to a plan that gives me more than needed.
So I am wondering if others on this forum could give me their opinion/advise?
Does anyone else use the unlimited 29.99 plan as their only source of internet connection? and how fast/slow etc?
If it matters I will be using the internet connection in Pasadena Texas and mainly we use the internet for general searches on basic info, job searches, facebook,  ipod music, no gaming or anything complicated, just a typical basic internet family use.
    Thank you so much!
    Shannon

In addition to the unlimited $29.99 data plan, you would also need a $29.99 tethering plan, so it would cost you $60 a month - and the connection would not be as good as your DSL.  And we use our DSL to connect to a router and have several laptops and desktops using our DSL, which would not work with a tethered connection.  My advice - skip the tethering and keep the DSL.

My cell phone will not back up properly to my laptop.  I have tried three times in two days as I knew I was getting my new phone today and wanted to save all my information.  The problem is that it backed up very random things like things from my IPod from years ago, and did not back up all the information it should have from my "old" cell phone.  Now I am missing almost everything.  What happened and can i fix this?

First, make sure you are using the most current version of iTunes 11.1.3 (8).  Second, what version of iOS 7 was your old phone running, i.e. 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2? If your back-up was made with a version of iOS that is newer than the version on your new phone, it will not sync. For example, if your back-up was of a phone running iOS 7.0.4, and your new phone was running 7.0.2 out of the box, the back up will not sync to the new phone until it is updated to iOS 7.0.4.

  • WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL CELL PHONE AND TABLET/ULTRABOOK/LAPTOP COMBO?

I’d like to see what everyone here thinks is the best CELL PHONE and TABLET/ULTRABOOK/LAPTOP combination to own this year now that the CES show is coming to a close.  So post up what you think is the ideal combination from what has been announced.  Maybe, just maybe, Best Buy will listen and insure they carry the products we want.
    My vote goes to:
PHONE = Samsung Galaxy Note LTE (unlocked - carrier independent)
TABLET/ULTRABOOK/LAPTOP = Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 with Windows 8 and its’ IPS touch screen
(Posted this in the Cell Phone AND Tablet forums)

    Blackberry 9810
efficient keyboard for quick access to functions.  How many other phones have 26 quick keys to dial a number?
convenient one handed operation on the bus because it has a trackpad
great battery life with the slower processor
user replaceable battery.  You can change a battery for the cost of a good dinner.  Other phones have sealed batteries that force you to get a hair dry to rip the battery out.  Basically they force you to get a new phone....SCAM
durability..... seen too many cracked Apple screens.  Takes a lot of punishment without needing a THICK "bumper"
brightness.... notice how dim iPhone screens are on bus compared to other phones?
data compression.... doesn't  rack up my data plan.  Doesn't have Siri.  Blackberry uses 1/3 or 1/6 the data compared to other phones.  Very important, especially when travelling
BBM saves me money when texting with other international BBM users.
the 9810 sliding mechanism means the phone is compact when not used, but grows in size when needed
the 9810 keyboard does not shrink my viewing area when I'm typing
    Blackberry Playbook
plays flash websites.... i got tired of Apple forcing websites to create an App to work (scam)
fits in my purse and pocket
dual speakers without a dock..... it's amazing the audio quality
    stereo microphones
smart bezel where the frame is an added touchpad functionality
With the upcoming OS update next month, Blackberries can take remote control of the Playbook tablet.... HOT as the phone keyboard can be used as Playbook tablet keyboard and phone screen become a mouse!

I am trying to get my iPad2, my HTC Thunderbolt (Droid) cell phone and my laptop (PC with Windows 7) to share contacts and calendar information. I just can't get them all connected. Any suggestions?

hotmail works as exchange for ios devices

but if you just use the email program build into osx on the macbook it does not support hotmail as exchange
in that case you should set it up there are pop3 and never to delete mails from the server

I understand that with my Photoshop/Lightroom 9.95 subscription I can activate two "machines".  Do I have to include my iPad and Android cell phone, both of which have LR Mobile installed, or can I just count my desktop and the laptop I'm getting ready to purchase?

As John has correctly the two activation are for computers, for using it on i pad & android you will have to refer to :

iMesssage has stopped using my cell phone number and is only showing email addresses -- in other words, when I text, it is showing up as coming from an email address, even when i use my phone.   The laptop and phone are still synchronized and messages are showing on both devices.
I've seen this before and was able to fix in Settings, but that is not working now.
    Please help.  Thanks.

Did you replace your iPhone with some other kind of phone? If your phone number is no longer connected to an active iPhone, you can't use it to message from your Mac.

  • How to EA6500 without DSL modem, computer tethered to cell phone providing internet

    Good Day All
I am trying to setup my EA6500 Smart Wifi router to share files across my network and provide internet to stream media to my DVD. I have in the past had it operating to stream to the DVD player via Ethernet cable but when I can do that I have no access to the router setup to configure any of its features. I can't access the USB hard drives or any of the setup functions all I get is a blank log in screen when trying to access it via its IP address. I do not have a DSL modem. My network is set up with a Desktop tethered to a cell phone and then connected to the router to provide the path to the other network components. All the configurations I have seen and all the help forums that I have found only talk about configuring with a DSL modem providing the internet. I am pretty sure the EA6500 will work the way I'm trying to configure it but I just can't get the settings nailed down to make it work as it should.Any one know of what I am doing wrong in configuring my network

    electronbrad
Is this how your network is set up?
If yes, there is no Linksys router that will work this way. As far as I know, most of the router if not all needs Internet Connection (DSL, Cable, etc) to work and share internet connectivity to other network devices.

  • Our cell phones causes Firefox not to load on my laptop.

When my friend came in with his cell phone, Firefox could not load any other page. The internet was working. Some type of file must have been sent to the cell phones to cause this. My phone creates the same problem. I remove the battery from the phone. If I forget, a file is sent requesting me to urgently download a Firefox plugin which I refuse to do since I believe it is malevolent. This happens when the cell phones are near the computer in the same room.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • Is Palm Zire 21 Software compatible with Palm Pre Plus Cell Phone?

I have an older Palm Zire 21. I love all the features. However, now I am trying to consolidate my Windows (vista) Calendar with my Palm and it is not compatible. I thought I would purchase the newer Palm Pre plus Cell Phone in order to have all of my contacts and calendars on my phone as well as my laptop. Though no one can seem to answer my question: Can I import my contact and calendar from my Zire 21 to the Palm Pre Plus?
Many thanks to who can answer this for me. I greatly appreciate your time and assistant.

webOS (the new Operating System) from Palm does not natively sync to your computer, but to the "cloud" (online servers).
Palm offers a program that will read your Palm Desktop information, and transfer it to Google.  This is only a one-time transfer, and not a sync solution.  See this thread.

  • Oracle Lite on Cell phones??

    Hi,
I have a question, the documentation and metalink said that Oracle Lite is only supported for Laptops, tablet PC, Pocket PC and Palms. However, many people is interested in using on cell phones.
Someone knows if certain devices like Black Berry has the capability of supported it.

The Datbase Lite client RDBMS is ported to CE, Mobile 5 and Symbian OS 7 and 8. Telephone handsets using these OS environments, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, HTC, Samsung and others, can and do use Datbase Lite.
Blackberry is a Java only enviroment and it is not possible to port the client database since it is written in C/C++ and RIM want allow anything but Java on their devices. We would have to re-write the client database in Java and that development effort is extreme.

  • I use a prepaid cell phone , who elses does?

Im not a big talker on the phone. I do have a landline number, but thats only because I need it for DSL in my area. So I went with a prepaid phone, and I must say I am pleased that I can purchase the talk time I only need when it matters most. Each cell phone comes with hidden fees and other TOS lingo you gotta read before activating your phone but its not as bad as it seems.

Personally, I think T-mobile is the leader in prepay at the moment.
Once you hit gold status which takes buying a $100 prepay card  any future minute purchase will last 1 year.
Here is why I believe they are the best "Emergency" Phones:
So, first year you buy a $100 prepay card and a $50 phone.
Second year, you buy a $10 card and get a whole year before it expires (and your $100 rolls over if it hasnt been used.)
2 Years of full time cell phone service with over 1200 minutes for $160.
    3 years for $170
If you only use the phone for 1 minute calls, it is the best value.
You can easily upgrade to a plan when you hit that point where you use more minutes.
BUT for $40 a month PREPAY you can get 400 minutes if you buy in $100 increments.  Thats a deal.
