DSL question

Hello,
I'm currently still on dial-up, but am thinking of switching to DSL as Verizon has a $14.95/mo. deal for 768/kbps.
Any way, part of the deal requires they send me some sort of hardware. I'm assuming this is a DSL modem (is that correct)? Also, is there any way to hook up to DSL on my mac without using this hardware?
Last, with my current set up, I've been able to using "INTERNET SHARING" with the dial up so that she and I can be online at the same time. Will switching to DSL have any affect on this? I'm assuming not, but think that DSL may be a whole new "beast" with its own quirks.
Any other basic tips are appreciated as well.

Hello,
I'm currently still on dial-up, but am thinking of
switching to DSL as Verizon has a $14.95/mo. deal
for
768/kbps.
That's kinda slow. Faster than dial-up, but nowhere
near the best speeds that are possible with DSL or
cable.
Any way, part of the deal requires they send me
some
sort of hardware. I'm assuming this is a DSL
modem
(is that correct)? Also, is there any way to hook
up
to DSL on my mac without using this hardware?
You're going to need some kind of DSL device. They
come in two basic versions: USB and ethernet. Stay
far, far, FAR away from USB. USB DSL requires
drivers, which often break when Apple updates the OS.
USB DSL is a pain to share with other machines on a
local net. USB DSL is a pain, period. Avoid.
Some DSL providers require that you buy or rent their
devices. Some will allow you to buy 3rd-party
devices. Typical rental is $5-10/month. A DSL device
in CompUSA is $80-120, depending on which one you
want to buy. You do the math...
Last, with my current set up, I've been able to
using
"INTERNET SHARING" with the dial up so that she and
I
can be online at the same time. Will switching to
DSL have any affect on this?
No, but there are far easier ways. If you get an
ethernet DSL device, you can also get a router. (Some
ethernet devices have a router built in.) Home
routers, including the routers built into many DSL
devices, often have a built-in switch with four or
more ports. Some have wireless built in, too. This
means that sharing ethernet DSL is easy: plug in an
ethernet cable to the switched port and whichever
computer or printer or whatever you want on the net.
Or, if wireless is available on the router, give the
other machines wireless NICs too.
I'm assuming not, but
think that DSL may be a whole new "beast" with its
own quirks.
DSL is basically super telephone. It uses the same
infrastructure. Limitations include the fact that the
further away you are from the exchange, the worse
your connection speed is going to be, and there's
nothing they can do about that with current
technology except build a new exchange closer to you.
Which probably isn't going to happen soon, if at all.
(In other words, you may not be able to get more than
768, based on your distance from the exchange.)
You can talk on the phone while DSL is active. You
can use a fax machine on the phone line, too. You'll
need a filter to clear the DSL signal from your
voice/fax line(s).
DSL usually uses PPPoE or PPPoA protocols. In the US,
it's almost always PPPoE. This is not really an
'always-on' system; PPPoE, like dial-up PPP, will log
you into the ISP's system using a specific username
and password. However, it does so very quickly, so
quickly that you usually won't notice that it's doing
anything. It will usually feel as though it's
always on. Many home routers can be set to keep the
PPPoE login on 24/7, so you really will have
always-on service. I'd check with the ISP before
doing that, though, just in case they object.
Any other basic tips are appreciated as well.
hope this helped.
I just hooked up my Verizon DSL last night and so far so good...(I know it's not much time). It was fairly easy to do and given that the price is right, at least for me, 768 kbps is better than dial-up. (Earthlink is $22/month). My question is this:
In trying to set up an account with the VErizon software that came with the hardware and wires, filters, etc., I got a message that said I do not have "administrative rights" to set up this account, blah-blah. I called Verizon and the tech was able to get me set up and on the 'net (with Safari) but the message seemed to be that if I don't get "admin rights" I won't be able to download files and my DSL service may be compromised.
Anyone know anything about this? Is "admin rights" crucial or something I'd only need for a Verizon account/homepage/e-mail, etc.
Any advice is appreciated. As wonderful as the iMac is, it's frustrating to constantly run into these little roadblocks and speed bumps because I have an Apple product and not Windows PC, etc.
Thanks,
Fred

  • Slow Dry Loop DSL question

    Hi,
I've had this dry loop dsl for a couple of months after getting rid of my home phone dial tone and using my VZW smartphone as my only source of voice comm. In the last month (March) speeds have been below dial-up speeds. Before going to dry loop I would typically get on the 1 MB plan 0.75mb down and .35mb up which worked great for me as I don't watch video, play online games or use a lot of bandwidth heavy sites on the net.
Now beginning in March it has dropped and sometimes just disconnects then returnes to:
    Last Result:Wednesday 04-Apr 2012, 06:22:02 PM
Download Speed: 138 kbps (17.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 124 kbps (15.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Wondering  what happened? I've done the turn on-turn-off Westell 6100 moded, reboot the computer, unplug the dsl line then plug it back into the modem...still can't get consistency like I had  months before going to dry loop dsl. Here's my Westell modem transceiver stats as of this morning: (does look a little better down stream but upstream is ...  well blah for email; especially a 2mb photo attachement!)
    Transceiver Revision
    3.3.6.10.0.1
    Vendor ID Code
    4D54
    Line Mode
    ADSL_G.dmt
    Data Path
    INTERLEAVED
    Transceiver Information
    Down Stream Path
    Up Stream Path
    DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec)

    160
    Margin (dB)
    30.3
    31.0
    Line Attenuation (dB)
    30.3
    17.0
    Transmit Power (dBm)
    16.8
    11.2
You think a suggestion to Verizon on having the CO in my rural town move me off of a busy router/DSLAM to see if that would bring up my down stream and up stream numbers with consistency? Or maybe the line noise is bad. Or my TIB outside of the house that has been worked on a couple of years ago isn't compatible with dry loop dsl now?
Thanks for anyone taking the time to help out on this. First time poster here.
    Nixie

Are you only seeing speed drops during the evening hours or is this a case that occurs 24/7? The line statistics look fine now, but there's a difference between congestion, an incorrectly built PVC and physical line trouble.

  • Some Questions. Server config, bitrates, bandwidth, connections

Hi. My company are trying out the FMS to establish if we will use it in the future or if we should use a cloudhost. Now I was the person put in charge of this operation(a .NET developer). So please excuse my simple questions and my lack of knowledge when it comes to flash media. I figure who better to ask then the pros at adobe that made the product. This might be a long post. I promise all help and tips I can get is highly appricaited
Setup: Amd Quad Core 2.20, RAM 1gb, windows server 2008, connections 8/4 dsl
    Question one.
My memory(%) usage are on steady on about 80%, what does that mean, to little RAM or?
    Question two.
Is there any Specific Server Configurations I could do to the server to make it perform better?
    Question three.
What specifics should I convert the FLV files into. Are there any "Default or general" so to speak? Frames, Bitrate, Picture ratio ect.. this is where I have no idea.
    Question four.
We are maybe gone have about a 1k users on this maximum. How much bandwidth does that demand?
    Question five.
I have installed the FMS on my server machine. I have not done any configurations to the FMS what so ever. Now I have uploaded a test site(html) with the movie trailer from iron man 2, it is a flv downloaded from youtube. file is about 11mb.. when I run it on one 1 browser window it play good, but then i open up like 7 windows and run the clip at the same time it starts to freeze and load a lot. Is is not supose to handle more then 6 connections? I thought maybe my compter was the problem but I got a pretty good setup with 10/10 fiber, wich should be enof to stream 6 clips right?
What could this possibly be that my server can not handle more connections?

    Hi Dejan-S,
You mentioned that your company is trying out FMS to see if it fits your usecase. So I would broadly like to know what is your usage like. Also which version of FMS have you downloaded?
From your question 3 I can make an assumption that your want to make available you media files for some one to view them by streaming them using FMS. On this assumption I will attempt to answer your questions:
    1. My memory(%) usage are on steady on about 80%, what does that mean, to little RAM or?
Yes a higher RAM would definitely help, we recommend 2GB at the minimum. Also you could tune your server by using the SERVER.FLVCACHE_MAXSIZE of fms.ini file at FMS Root directory/conf. You could set it to a higher value provided you have sufficient RAM so FMS would use this space for caching the streaming content and serve your video on demand usage better.Typically you could try setting the SERVER.FLVCACHE_MAXSIZE to 1/4th of your server's RAM size.
You might have taken a look at http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediainteractive/systemreqs/
    2. Is there any Specific Server Configurations I could do to the server to make it perform better?
Are you using the vod application at FMS Root directory/applications for streaming? If not you could try using that app and also take a look at the configurations made in the Application.xml(located in vod directory) there which could act as a guideline for fine tuning your server.
The section name "Tuning server performance" in the flashmediaserver_3.5_tech_overview.pdf at FMS Root directory/documentation might also give you some insight into this area.
    3. What specifics should I convert the FLV files into. Are there any "Default or general" so to speak? Frames, Bitrate, Picture ratio ect.. this is where I have no idea.
A lot of that would depend on your final deployment(the hardware resources that you are allocating) and if it will be able to handle the higher bitrate files. The frames and picture ratio too is your choice on how  much crispness you want to bring to your video files.
Also wanted to let you know FMS supports MP4 format as well which means you could use H.264 and HE-AAC codecs in your media files.
    4. We are maybe gone have about a 1k users on this maximum. How much bandwidth does that demand?
It would depend on factors like how high a bitrate video files are you streaming and if all the all the 1000 users are connected to FMS server and streaming at the same time. It would be tough to give an estimate just based on number of users.
I think it's your client machine which is unable to handle so many browsers playing video at the same time.So I guess you could try opening the browsers on different client machine and see that you are able to get the ideal experience.
Also if your use case is video on demand, then you could also make use of the Edge-Origin deployment of FMS where in you make use of the FMS edge server's capability to cache streaming content and serve users seeking the same content instead of fetching it from the FMS origin server all over again.
You could take a look at the flashmediaserver_3.5_tech_overview.pdf at FMS Root directory/documentation and look for  "Deploying Edge Servers" to get more idea.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • Silly question, maybe. I want to change from Verizon DSL to cable, but cable company doesn't supply router.  can I use my Airport Extreme as wireless router?

We currently have the following wireless home-network configuration, powered by Verizon DSL.
    2 macbook pro’s
    1 emachine
    HP PhotoSmart 6122 all-in-one printer
    Apple TV
Apple Airport Extreme Base Port A 1408
    Westell 7500 router
Thinking I’d get wider wireless coverage throughout my 2 bedroom home, I purchased the Airport Extreme. It is connected to the router via its sole usb port.  The result was only a tiny increase in speed, and no increase in coverage, so I don’t know why I have it.
We now want to change from DSL to cable, thus ditching Verizon.  Our new cable provider supplies the cable box, but no router for wireless networking.
    Here are my questions.
Can I use the Airport Extreme (AE) as a wireless router?
If so, how should I hook it up?  Should the usb cable go from the AE to the cable box, and all the other devices connect wirelessly?
If not, how should I be using the AE to some advantage?  What can I get out of the investment?
Thank you very much for your help!  Beatriz

What I wrote has nothing to do with what the cable company charges for their installation. And, usually they will help with the router setup even if you supply your own router. I don't know what they will charge for the modem.
Note that you need to get just a modem. You don't want a modem/router combination. That will make using an AEBS effectively nearly impossible. You will need to ask specifically for just a standalone modem, and that you will supply your own router.

  • A few questions about getting DSL

Hi, my home has been out of range for DSL and we've been patiently waiting for years for the day to come when it's available, but it doesnt look like it'll be happening soon. We have a small business we run out of the house and have been paying a fortune a month for those mobile cellular internet cards (a little faster than dial-up) and figured we'd save money eventually if we could just pay verizon engineers to run another base station or repeater to extend the line to reach us.
My question is would this even be possible, and if so how much do you think it would cost, just an estimate, our neighbors about a mile away (through the power lines) have it. We've pretty much exhausted all other options and need high speed for our growing business.
    Thanks

Many years ago, engineers finally got the attention of top management.  3G cell phone now do more than copper land lines.  That created enough panic among bean counters to finally let them install FIOS.  Copper is now dying.  Anything in copper that might become available is only because it always existed.  Your only upgrade is now FIOS.
Meanwhile, competition also exists.  For example, internet via Direct TV.  Also coming is Wi-Max.  Intel has been at this for about ten years.  So it should be coming soon.  Wi-Max is WiFi but in a wider radius.  Whereas WiFi may be 300 feet; Wi-Max is in the entire mobile phone cell.
Typical reason for no DSL is a wire that is too long.  However some better radio transceivers (DSL is radio wave communication) have made a minor increase in DSL's range.  Have you checked the availability of that new option?

  • Need help  - Ethernet question for DSL

Hi, hoping someone can help me. We are looking into getting Verizon DSL internet, and don't know if we have the Ethernet specifications. We have a flat screen 17" iMac 1Ghz, Dh said he knows we have an ethernet connection but doesn't know about the card. What Verizon says we need is a "10-Base-T Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC)". How would I find out if we have this? (We are not eligible for the 24hr online chat support and I don't want to pay $49+ for one question)! Thanks,
    Erica

    Tom & Erica,
You should have very little trouble connecting with Verizon. I have multiple Verizon accounts and they have always been very helpful in getting you set up, even if they need to come out to test/adjust the line-in to your home. You will get a package from them which will include DSL modem, filters, cables and so on.
Don't hesitate to call them for help in setting it up - BUT, tell them at your first opportunity that you are running on a Mac. They will switch you immediately to a Mac person who can walk you thru just about any OS configuration.
And no I don't work for Verizon...Just Kidding
    GOOD LUCK
    John
Oh, of course you will want to call Verizon and have them test the line prior to/or at the time of your order. They can do that while you are on the line with them and at no charge.

  • Question about high speed DSL

I have had high speed DSL 1.5 MB service since 8/20. Up until last night I was in love with the service. It was running between 600 and 1000KBPS excededing my expectations.
Then last night around 9:45pm it got extremely slow. I am talking 23.3KBPS on the bandwidth test I was able to run from CNET. I followed the instructions in the tech support and power cycled my modem and PC. I checked all connections and they were secure. The DSL light is solid which from what I have read here means I have a connection.
Would rain/thunderstorms cause an issue? We have had a large amount of rain since Saturday.
I am just frustrated with this issue.

  • Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my DSL through the time capsule? I'd like to leave my current modem from my provider as the primary unit for networking.  So in other words can I just set up the time capsule as a back-up device for now and

Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my time capsule as my DSL modem?  Based on the location of my iMAC right now it would be better to just leave the modem provided by my internet provider in place.  I really just want to use the time capsule as a back-up storage device for now and connnect the ethernet cable from my ISP at a later date.

Generally it is easier to bridge the TC and plug it into the router.. it then lives on the network.. it is after all, a network drive.. and you can access it via your existing connection whether wireless or wired to the existing modem.
If you really want a totally stand alone setup please tell me how you are presently accessing internet on the Mac you want to backup on the TC.

  • Qwest DSL and Airport Express connection question

I've recently purchased DSL service from Qwest and I'm using an Actiontec GT701 modem (also supplied by Qwest). When plugging the ethernet cable directly into my iMac, I can easily connect to the internet. However, when I plug the ethernet cable into my AirPort Express and try to connect wirelessly, I've not had any success. The AirPort on my iMac easily locates the AX signal (as it will also do for the Qwest modem), but subsequent attempts to wirelessly connect to the internet do not work. I repeatedly get an error message: "Unable to connect to the internet" (or something similar).
Qwest customer support has not been able to provide any solutions.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanks very much.

Also, one other question: the DSL with Qwest is set up as a "PPPoA", and the iMac seems to be looking for a "PPPoE". Are these two compatible, or should I perform any additional set-up/configuration changes with the AX or my iMac?
No these represent two different methods of encapsulating the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).
PPPoE = Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet
PPPoA = Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM
This may represent a problem as, far as I know, AirPort products don't support PPPoA. Typically only the device directly connected to the ISP or the modem needs to be set up for either PPPoE/PPPoA. All other would use "Using DHCP."
I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with PPPoA setup. Maybe someone else in these Discussions can chime in.
You mentioned that you tried to change the DSL over to PPPoE. Is that an option that is available to you with the DSL service your ISP provides?

  • DSL Filter Question

I only have Dry DSL service, no dial tone (phone) service. Do I still need the DSL Filter (I had a whole house filter) attached to my incoming line that goes to my DSL modem? I tried taking it off and I was not able to connect to the internet.

In the meantime as you wait for an answer like yes or no (and maybe why), you can try to find out by trail and error.
If you can not connect without it, you must use a filter.
If you can not connect with or without it, something else is blocking the connection...

  • AE & Verizon DSL with Westell 6100 Configuration Settings Question

    Hello,
Has anyone configured their Airport Extreme with Verizon DSL using a Westell 6100 modem in the last few months? I'm wondering if you have any particular tips or have a set of screen shots of the process. I'm walking my mother through the process remotely and having some issues. Any help would be appreciated!
I'm specifically wondering whether I have to set the modem into bridge mode first, then use the AE to log into Verizon service via PPoE? Do I need to call Verizon & tell them my AE's MAC address first?
    Thank you,
    Chris

Is there an "Airport Extreme User's Guide"? When I look at the manuals available for download under Apple's support page for Airport Extreme and Airport Express, I see a "Airport Extreme Card User's Guide," but not one for those of us with Airport Extreme base stations. Am I missing something?
My Verizon DSL (also via Westell 6100 DSL modem, just like Chris') works fine with my desktop, but when I power up a G3 iBook, I have to wait forever for it to boot if it's in range of my home network. I'm trying to fix that problem, so I'm wondering if I need to reexamine the way my DSL modem and base station are configured, just like Chris.

I am thinking about getting the AT&T Express or Basic DSL and I'm not sure which hardware package to order.
If I remember correctly, you have to chose one of two packages, one of which is just a regular modem which you connect to your computer, and one is their wireless modem which allows you to hook up several computers (and which is more expensive).
