Dsl slowed way down????

Is there a way to clean up my computer like on a pc. On a pc you can defragment and then clean up the disk, what can I do on my imac g5 osX? My dsl started out really fast and now it's like dial up. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Without running a speed test, how do you know it is definately not the service provider? Disk Utility tells you nothing about the speed of your internet connection.
Sometimes ISPs do suffer from outages and such, but assuming that is not the case, there are other things to check.
While Speakeasy is a speed test, it relies on Javascript and that can make the test seem slower than it actually is. I prefer PC Pitstop instead. Run it several times and tell us what you get.
Check your activity monitor and tell us what your CPU and memory usage is. You might have a CPU/memory hogging program running in the background.
Quit all apps and relaunch just your broswer. Run the tests again.
Are you using Safari for your browser? While Safari looks nice and has some helpful features, it can be one of those programs where the memory and CPU usage creeps up and up until it chokes your system. That is the main reason that I do not use Safari anymore and use Camino instead.
Reboot. If that fixes the problem, then it is possible that one of those progams was ended and solved the slowness.
Try resetting your modem and roouter (if you have one). Run the test.
Check in your network settings and see if your connection - ethernet or Airport - is listed first. If it is not, drag it to the top of the list.
Click on "configure" on the conenction and see if you have any DNS servers listed. Sometimes providers switch DNS and if you have a server specified that has been retired, that can cause a slowdown. Write those numbers down and reboot. Then try the connection again.
Back in that some panel, check to see if IPv6 is enabled. Some providers do not like having that enabled. Disable it, reboot, and run the test again.
It is entirely possible that your connection is fine and up to speed, but something in your Mac is making it seem slower than it should be. It is also entirely possible that your ISP is having an issue as well.
EDIT: Bob, we were posting at the same time. At least we had some of the same ideas. I just take a long time to say it sometimes - just like this edit - LOL!

  • Firfox slowing way down or hanging and task manager has multiple sessions of "plugin-container.exe *32" running.

I'm running Win 7, Firefox 10.0.2 and all my plug-ins are up to date. I'm having issues with Firfox slowing way down or hanging, let say like when going to Youtube or site that just has a picture that uses Flash. I go to task manager and have multiple sessions of “plugin-container.exe *32" running at anywhere from 2,000k to over 300,000k (only one at the larger amount and most at 2m to 8m). I have to kill the multiple processes to get it running right again.

    Hi kb11,
Have you looked at our [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-slow-or-takes-too-long-start performance troubleshooting section]? There is a lot of good information in there that should help.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked?

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

  • Why has OS X Mountain Lion caused my powerbook to slow way down?

Why has OS X Mountain Lion caused my powerbook to slow way down?  With OS X Lion  and Snow Leopard my laptop was very fast--now it seems to take foever to load or respond.  It there something I am missing?  Help, as I am very frustrated.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • Searching Slows Way down

I've been having an issue with my 10.4.4 server where if two users search at the same time the searches take 4 or 5 times longer then normal. I understand the fact that the searches would slow down I just don't know why the slowdown is so much. Any thoughts?

    Hi bmihura,
If you are iterating through the VI's yourself, you can use the Get Lock State method from a vi reference to check if a VI is password protected (or just locked).  Check the attached image for a trivial sample.
    Joe Z.
Edit:  I missed the operative word: search!  In my version of LV (7.1) there doesn't seem to be a way around the password issue.  Perhaps another can offer better advice.  Sorry!

  • Why does my internet slow WAY down when I have camera wirelessly connected

This is a great camera for my purpose, but for some reason it is slowing my internet download to crawling speed when I have it connected wirelessly. Btw don't know if having it done wired does any good.
It used to work fine (without slowing down my internet) until I added a second wvc210 camera, so I removed the second camera and its still sloooow.  If I have it disabled (unplugged) then my internet is fine.
Any suggestions?  Thanks for any advice.

  • Export progress bar speeds to 50% then slows way down

While I'm here browsing for answers to another question I just asked, thought I would ask another one about a project I worked on at home...
    Home computer specs:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
AMD Phenom II 6-core 3.2ghz processor (overclocked to 4ghz)
    16gb 1600mhz RAM
    Nvidia GTS 450
Plenty of hard drive space, all 7200rpm internal
So my problem is with exporting...  I was working with a 30 minute wmv file...and really all I did as far as editing goes...was cut off about 5 minutes from the beginning.  That's it.  No graphics, no effects...nothin.
So I proceed to export it as a wmv, I used stock settings because I honestly didn't care about the quality, I just wanted it done fast.  Estimated file size was less than 100mb I think...  The export process began
and speedily finished 50% of it in about 10 seconds and then slows to a crawl, where the time remaining was now going up 1 second at a time instead of down.  By how slow it was going, it was probably going to
take about a half hour, which is bs for exporting to a crappy file type with low quality settings.  My work comp has lower specs than this computer, and it exports 30 minutes of my avchd footage in the same amount
    of time...
This seems like Premiere has an issue with certain file types here.
    Any help?

yah i was thinking the same thing, the 2 pass is what is causing your timing dilemma, 50% was just the first pass analysis. The rest is the real rendering process.
Being crappy video with a crappy codec has nothing to do with speed, if anything it is going to make it slower. You didn't say how long it actually took to render out your video? With WMV i am guessing it is not multithreaded well and not using all 6 of your cores. try turning off maximum quality on your encoder and check your wmv settings, it is just a container and gives you lots of codec choices. it certainly is not the fastest thing out there but it appears you are being forced to use it anyways?

  • Iphoto began running slow right after the last update. I'm working with raw files. when I have an open moving from photo to photo some times it slows way down, Never did prior to last update. Thanks

iphoto is running slow at times. This never happened until I installed the the last update. The program gets slow when I have an event open moving with the arrows back and forth.  It doesn't make a difference in full screen or smaller

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import a number of raw image files and test to see if the same problem persists.

  • Connection SLOWS WAY DOWN while downloading podcasts

Anytime that I download podcasts using iTunes its like it chokes all the other applications that are trying to reach the net. I watched the activity monitor while I was downloading podcasts to see if I was exhausting the line coming into my home- but no. I was only getting about 500kpbs down...
I download other files (typically HUGE files since I edit video a lot for work) and I never see my entire connection tank like that. Sure things will be slower but it will not box out all the other applications from reaching the net.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this or why its doing it?

Try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. That should sort it temporarily, then you van work though any addons/extensions that could be causing it.

  • Windows 8.1 slows way down by 100% Disk Usage whenever playing PC Games (ntoskrnl.exe System)

This issue has been going on for just a couple days. As soon as I launch any game on my PC my computer immediately slows to a crawl. It has never froze nor have I got the BSOD. I have noticed (in the task manager) that the System (ntoskrnl.exe)
sucks the life out of my Disk and it jumps to 90-100%.  I have read about 50 articles about this and many people seem to have unique reasons why this happens. It has never happened before on Win7 and just started happening in Win 8.1. So things I have
    tried:
    Disable unnecessary windows services.
Changed Power Options and tweaked with some of the advanced settings.
    Scanned for Malware (none found)
    Scanned for viruses (none found)
Disabled Windows Media Center (since the problem started shortly after installing it)
Performed Deep scan for viruses in the registry (none found)
Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool (no errors found)
As I type this I am performing another virus scan and my Disk is at 99% as shown in the task manager. I assume this is because of Norton (and System) sucking up the HDDs. Like I said this happens every time during
gaming. Not sure if there is a connection between the two. That is just when I notice the issue.
So the problem at hand makes gaming (and any other application while gaming) nearly impossible. The games and programs all work just at a very slow speed. I finally asked tech support from Microsoft and they said (without letting me explain much
detail) that I had a virus and they tried to sell me anti-virus software. Anyone able to help me resolve this issue? It is "killing" me that I cannot find a resolution for this.
I will post screen shot of anything that might be of help if you need it.
    Thanks

In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652
Help with installation (if needed) is here
When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage, CPU usage, Disk IO.
If your problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)  Please configure yours as per the below snip
    Click Start
Let it run for 60 secs or more and save the file (it will show you where it is being saved and what the file is called)
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.

  • TC Slowing way down

For some reason, my TC takes a long time to back up data and it seems to spend a lot of time on the "Preparing Backup" phase. My Macbook is nearly always on the network so the slowdown cannot be attributed to infrequent backups. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks =)

Try switching to 802.11g (rather than the supposedly better/faster 802.11n) for the wireless. A couple of us - see other threads - have got wireless backup to run at acceptable speeds with 7.4.2 rather than completely unacceptable speeds.
In my case, my original TM runs at about the same speed as it did with 7.3.2. 7.4.1 was unreliable and very slow with 802.11n whereas 7.4.2 was reliable but VERY slow (about 40 times worse with minimal hourly backups). Even at the basic network PING level, it was about 4 times slower than with 802.11g.
    Might be worth a try?

  • IMovie 10.0.2 slowed way down exporting movies

it was hitting the system (mac mini, OSX 10.9.1, 8GB RAM, 2.6GHz Intel Core i7) fairly hard and making good progress through the background queue, but now it is only using 4% CPU and hardly making any progress.
it doesn't seem to be hitting the disk either.
is there a log file so i can tell what it's doing in the background?
is there a CPU cap suddenly in place?
how do i tell it to use MORE CPU?
my system is pretty solidly between 95% and 98% idle.
    thanks in advance,
    jeff

figured out part of it-- the part where it's using no resources and not making progress on the exports: sometimes when i quit out of iMovie and it has to cancel background processes, there's a process that doesn't die like it should. in ps it starts like this:
    /Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/PlugIns/Compressor/CompressorKit.bundle/Conten ts/Frameworks/Compressor.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/StompUtil.framework/Res ources/ProTranscoderTool_sb
if i kill that process, then when i start iMovie up again it uses more CPU (10-20%) and does the exports like it should.
it doesn't seem to be thrashing the disk; pity i can't get it to utilize more of the CPU...

  • Huawei e220 hangs on Mac Mini G4 and USB mouse and keyboard slow way down

I have a Mac Mini G4 running os10.5.8 My mouse and keyboard are a creative wireless combination that go to a USB hub then to the USB port on the mini. When I use my Huwei e220 wireless broadband modem, it frequently hangs when disconnecting, and the mouse and keyboard barely work. Activity monitor shows the CPU load is not very high at all, yet the mouse is almost stuck. If I put the computer to sleep, then it comes back and works fine. Its a bit of a hassle, and seems to be specific to the USB on the mac mini.

Is the modem connected via USB?
