DSL slower on my Mac than my Windows machine

Okay, so here's the problem.
I have a Dual Core 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5 with 6.5Gb of RAM and an old Windows box that's on its last leg with only 128mb of RAM. I'm using Firefox 2.0 on both and I have the FasterFox extension installed on the Mac, it is set to the "optimized" setting.
I have 1Mb/sec download DSL connection through Verizon. Both computers are hooked up to the DSL modem via a D-Link DI-604 router. My Windows machine seems to have a much more stable and fast connection while my Mac tends to loose the connection more frequently and is generally slower, much slower.
My Ethernet is configured at a speed of 100baseTX, full-duplex at the standard 1500 MTU size.
Any clues?
Thanks in advance!

Evan Agee-
Just unplug the cable from the port it is in and plug it into another one.
"My Ethernet is configured at a speed of 100baseTX, full-duplex at the standard 1500 MTU size." From that statement I made the leap of faith that you were familiar with how to set things up.
Most routers have a set-up web page for configuring stuff. It would be located at the default ip address for the router. The manual for the router should explain where it is.

  • I brought my itunes library onto a mac from a windows machine and now i have two separate libraries.  How can I merge them?

I moved to Mac from a Windows machine where I had downloaded all of my CDs into iTunes.  When I got my Mac it only put my purchased items into my library.  So I merged my windows library and it created a whole new user account with that on it.  I now have two libraries and can only sync music with one account or I lose all of my imported CDs.  Help!  How do I merge them.

The easiest way is to get both computers on your home network and copy the files over the network. It's easier than you think
    Check this earlier thread:
[How do I move my itunes library to new computer|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7937172&#7937172]
That thread mentions Target Disk Mode, which won't help moving from a PC to a Mac. But you can use file sharing to copy the files.
As the articles all say: don't forget to de-authorize your PC before you get rid of it.

  • The Battle between Mac Mini and windows machines

Ok i have a strange problem. I have a Mac Mini and it likes to fight with windows machines on the same network resulting in a loss in internet connectivity. Ok so here is the info the mini and the windows are on the same network the windows is wireless the mini is wired when both computers are on the internet for the whole network slows down. So i brought it to a friends house and hat it share his wireless connection same problem different windows machine except the internet connection stopped completely. With an all macintosh network nothing bad happens to the network.
    Solutions anyone?

If your Mac Mini is wired you can easily turn 'Airport' (the built in wireless) off. By clicking on the icon next to the speaker icon in the top right haand corner and clicking Airport off.

  • Backing up a Mac and a Windows machine?

    Hi,
Can Time Capsule be partition to backup a Mac on one of the partitions and a Windows machine on the other partition over the wireless network? and are there any settings I should be aware of?
Running OSX ver. 10.5.6 and Windows Vista Home premium on the other machine.
    Thank you.

Don't think so because once you set the format type for the Mac its encompasses the entire hard drive.

  • Linux server, 1 Leopard Mac, 2 Tiger mac and a Windows machine: Should I?

I am a photographer, my wife an audio producer. I am a Mac person - she has a Windows machine. We work at home and want to install an ethernet network and use a Linux server to serve up and share files accross the network.
We are both very proficient at running our respective operating systems on our own machines but have no experience working with or administering a server or a network. I am going to pay someone to help me wire up the house with gigabit Ethernet cabling and install the server and Linux server software.
I am a photographer and want to spend my time doing the things photographers do - eg not fiddling around getting a server to work and our computers to connect. I want a system that is just going to work once it is installed. I don't want to have to pay someone to come and help me when something goes wrong.
How do I know if I am getting in over my head here?

If neither of you are well versed in Linux, then why would you want to install a Linux server? That makes no sense to me. Why wouldn't you just install a Mac or Windows server?
*"How do I know if I am getting in over my head here?"*
There's no way anyone here can answer that question. While you say you're both proficient in your respective operating systems, we still have no way of knowing how proficient you are because we are not you. Only you can make that assessment and decision.

  • Download Mac Safari Off Windows Machine?

I have a Mac at home but a Windows machine at work, which is hooked up to broadband. Is there any link to get the Mac Safari off the Windows machine. I noticed you can't seem to choose between the two any more which is silly.

  • Internet is ~8x slower on Mac than in Windows

I'm dual-booting Mac OS 10.5.6 and Windows 7. In Windows 7, the internet is wonderfully fast but in Macintosh it is painfully slow. Several speed tests from both systems are shown in the following image. I need to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DNS only affects the initial connection time. It has nothing to do with connection speed
DNS translates the human-readable URL into a dotted-quad IP address. Nothing more. Once the dotted-quad is available, the DNS does nothing.
If you enter the dotted-quad IP directly into the browser, then the DNS is not even used.

  • Slow internet on Mac compared to XP machine

    Hi all,
I'm relativiely new to the Mac World so my knowledge is limited to what I read on the posts here on Discussions and some web sites you guys refer people to. I've been working on this problem for two days now and I hope you guys can help!
I have two machines connected to the same Linksys router.
    Mac: 2.1GHz 20" iMac G5 (iSight) 1.5GB 250GB HD OS X 10.4.3.
    PC : 1GHz Pentium III 19" 1GB 170GB HDs WinXP SP2.
I tried Using three different Web Browsers on Mac : Latest version of Mozilla, Firefox and Safari, so problem is not browser specific.
Alternating test between both machines within about 45 secondes. And with all browsers on Mac and Internet Explorer on PC.
Using "http://webservices.cnet.com/Bandwidth/" to test bandwidth on both machines I get the following:
    Mac: 859 to 1662 kbps
    PC : 3489 to 3541 kbps
Mac got 525 to 785 before I tried BandwidthOptimizer
Mac is running clean (no Anti-virus, no firewall and no other app than browser running)
Shutting down Cable Modem, Router and Both machines did nothing to help speedup Mac.
Anyone has an idea why Mac is so slow?
    TIA for your help!
    Dan

Hi Bob and Thanks a lot.
I already had my ISP's DNS info entered so that wasn't it. Although the faster DNS were not the ones my ISP was advertizing or the ones my router said it got from my ISP but some other DNS I picked up from other users of my ISP. And like I said, I tried three different browsers on the mac with the same results, so it wasn't browser related either.
As for network configuration, the original order was Bluetooth, Integrated Ethernet, Airport, Integrated FireWire and all were active. I changed the order to Airport, Integrated Ethernet, Bluetooth, Integrated FireWire and deactivated Bluetooth and FireWire.
    Network Status now shows:
Integrated Ethernet active with an IP address and that I'm connected via Integrated Ethernet.
    Airport is actually closed.
I do use Aiport, but not at home so I keep it deactivated from the menu bar status icon.
My new configuration rocks, most of the time the MAC is now faster than the PC.
Just a couple questions more though. Why should Airport be the first connection on the list? And shouldn't the preffered connection be the first one and then go down the list?
    Again, Thanks a lot.

  • Use a Mac as a Windows Machine

I recently posted a topic called "Run windows on a mac without OS X" at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2267624&tstart=0
I think I got what I was looking for but a new question came to my attention.
like the other post I don't want to ditch OS X but my best option right now is windows.
So, heres what I want to know.
    1) Use a program like SuperDuper to clone my OS X drive and transfer to an external drive, then install windows 7 home premium on my internal disk (of course after the Boot camp update so I'd run BC on my external disk through Mac OS X and install win7 on my internal HD)
    2) if I did do option 1 then if there were needed updates from OS X would I be able to even use them because win7 is on another drive.
    3) do the opposite and install (via Boot Camp) windows 7 home premium on the external HD (if there was a special way to do that, I would appreciate to know how.) and keep OS X unchanged on my normal HD.
    4) To Keep windows 7 and OS X on the same internal HD and don't bother (I have a macbook air and my space is very limited it's only about 75 - 80GB in total of HD space on internal HD.) so both OS's wouldn't be as optimised.
    5) which one of these options would be the best and how would I do it properly.
Thanks for your time and hope you can help me and maybe even someone else.

I'll just run with boot camp

  • Remote control a Mac server from Windows machines

I'm running a Mavericks Server that I'd like to get off my desk and put in the data center. However, my primary laptop is a Windows 8.1 laptop that I use to support other things. I'd still like the ability to remote into the Mac Server from my Windows laptop. I know that I can VNC into the server, but it's my understanding that if I have Remote Management turned on, I can't have Screen Sharing (and thus, VNC) turned on. So it seems like my options are to run  another VNC server on a different port or use LogMeIn Ignition. But I'm not sure what other people are using so I'd like your help. Thoughts? Suggestions?
    TIA

As you have found via the answer provided by Morgan R, it is possible to configure Remote Management to allow standard VNC clients to connect just like it is possible with Screen Sharing.
Note: Remote Management does everything Screen Sharing does plug other things. So anything you can do via Screen Sharing you can do via Remote Management.
However there is a client available for Windows that does support the extended login information used by Remote Management/Screen Sharing, this is 'Remotix' by Nulana.
    See http://www.nulana.com/remotix-windows/
I have tried it and it does work. I did however find one serious bug which I have reported to them but I don't know if they have fixed it yet.
Over the years I have found many in fact nearly all software that involves linking Mac and Windows where one controls the other in either direction has suffered an inexcusable bug whereby if you are not using US keyboards at both ends then several keys will not be mapped properly and you can even end up with some keys not usable at all. The most infamous combination is the @ and " keys being swapped.
All these programs appear to have been written by Americans who are members of the 'flat earth' society and obviously believe that if you leave the shores of the USA you will fall of the edge of the world. I presume they also are avid fans of the Discworld series of books.
Offenders include Virtual PC, Microsoft Remote Desktop Client 1.0 (for Mac), Timbkutu Pro, Remotix and I am sure many others.
Note: Microsoft did at least fix theirs several years later with Remote Desktop Client 2.0 (for Mac).
The one noteable exception is VNC. VNC was originally developed at AT&T Laboratories in Cambridge, England. (Not New England.)
See http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/dtg/attarchive/vnc/ I am sure if it had been developed in Cambridge, Massachusetts it would have suffered the same problem. Since Screen Sharing on Macs is based on VNC it has never suffered this problem even when controlling a PC via VNC. I am therefore even more shocked that Nulana managed to make this mistake.

  • Currently using Lightroom 5 as a standalone on a mac and two windows machines one desktop one laptop. with CC can i still use all the machines or do i have to take out an individual license for each?

with CC can i still use all the machines or do i have to take out an individual license for each?

Your LR5 license allows for activated installations on two machines.  Of those two machine, only one can be using the licensed software at a given time.  The same applies with CC, except with CC you won't be able to sneak in the third machine.  What you can do though with CC is have it installed on all three and sign in and out of the different machines as needed.
If you intend to be using all three machines at the same time then you do need three separate licenses/subscriptions to be in compliance with the license agreement.

  • Font size on Mac vs. Windows (again)

    Hi,
This is an old issue, but I have not found a satisfactory explanation, let alone solution: the exact same font renders roughly 10% larger on a Mac than on Windows - see attached example (Arial, bold, 120pt).
I've seen two explanations of why fonts render differently on Mac and Windows:
The Mac assumes 72 ppi, whereas Windows assumes 96 ppi. But this results in Windows displaying a given font 33% larger than Mac, and I'm seeing 10% smaller – so that's not the explanation.
The Windows renderers try to align each character with the pixel boundaries, Mac does not. But my example is a string with only 10 characters, so the difference should be less than 10 pixels; in actual fact it's more like 62 pixles.
I should mention that I ran the same experiment with MS Word on Mac and Windows, and I got roughly the same result as in LabVIEW. So I'm convinced that it's an OS issue – but it so happens that I need to fi it for my LabVIEW application!
    So:
Can anyone explain what's going on?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it, or at least minimize it?
    Thanks in advance!
    -- Phil
P.S. Please don't tell me to use another font; all the fonts common to Windows and Mac seem to have about the same behavior. Also, please don't tell me to use the LabVIEW's System font; that doesn't fix the problem either.

I would first verify the two dpi settings.  The dpi settings are changeable.
In terms of fonts, LV can not even get along with other Windows programs, I am not sure it will ever get along with Macs as well.
What LV calls pt is unfortunately px actually.  Drives me nuts, pt is a well defined unit (72 pt = 1 inch), px is not a unit of length.  My own observations are consistent with the 96 versus 72 dpi difference between Macs and Windows (by default).  My Mac VIs used a 10 "pt" font which would have me squinting on Windows where I use 15-16 "pt".  If you are only seeing a 10% difference I count you as lucky.

  • If i use a usb flash drive which is both os and windows compatible can i transfer files from my mac to a windows pc using the same usb flash drive?

if i use a usb flash drive which is mac os and windows compatible can i use it to copy files from the mac to a windows machine. i have to do some training abroad and wnat to take the files on a usb from the mac but they will only have a windows operating system available to me.

Generally, it's not the flash drive that makes it compatible, but the formatting used on it.  In Disk Utility on a Mac, the format is called MS-DOS (FAT).  In Windows, I believe it is called FAT32.
A USB flash drive formatted that way should be readable and writable on both Mac OS X and Windows.  But you may want to try a "trial run" before relying on it for the trip.
