DSLR 5dMkII H.264 30p editable format, anything smaller than ProRes, AIC?

First off - thanks to everyone for the wealth of info already posted on this topic! I went from 0-60 in a couple of hours about my workflow options.
So, I'm a newbie with limited resources. This is my first short-film (first film project). See my computer's specs below. I now know that the 5dMkII gives me 1920x1080, 30p (not 29.97 - thought those were the same for a while with the H.264 codec. OK, not even viewable on my machine in QT and painful in FCP.
So I've learned that FCP doesn't like H.264 as an editing format. Now I converted some clips to ProRes. The shorter clips (>30 seconds) look great and flow fine but, the longer clips (3:30) are so big (5GB) that they are chugging and giving me an 8 bit techno song for audio (which I'm thinking about sampling for a future dance project) Viewing them off a USB 2.0 drive isn't working.
Can anyone suggest an alternative HD editable format to ProRes422 or AIC that can maybe bring down the file size?

Sorry, not if you want to work in an editable HD format. DVCPRO HD maybe, but that doesn't save a lot of space over ProRes. ProRes IS the space saving editing codec.

  • Best/Least Processor Intensive Offline Editing Format

    Hey,
I'm using Final Cut Studio 2 (Final Cut Pro 6.0.6) on an iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard with 4GB of RAM.
We shot on a Canon 7D which puts out H.264 masters. I've converted to ProRes 422 (in FCP 6 there are only ProRes & ProRes HQ - I converted to the regular version).
Now, although my iMac can deal with that most of the time, it's often dropping frames and certainly can't deal with any effects in real time. What I want to know is which format would allow me to creatively edit, with simple effects, split screens, etc., without needing to render every time.
The best advice I found was in the FC manual which suggested Photo JPEG, which I did, at full frame rate, but 50% image size. The bit rate and file sizes are significantly smaller. In any case, although it plays fine, for editing, anything I do to it - for example to re-frame, slow down, color correct - it gives me the red bar and needs a render.
Is there a format that will allow me more creativity with less need for rendering, during the offline edit?
Thanks very much for any advice.
    Best,
    Matt

Thanks so much for responding. For some reason, on that timeline, I don't get the same options as on other timelines.?. I chose to adjust the timeline to the footage when I dropped it in, so the timeline and photage should be identical.
So anyway, choosing 'Unlimited RT' isn't an option.
Is PhotoJPEG the best for offline or are there others I could use that would let me be more creative without a render (in realtime)?
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • I need to digitize VHS movies to an editable format to iMac.

I need to digitize VHS movies to an editable format to Mac. I've tried the Elgato Video Capture but it only works if you use it with the software that only export in mp4 format. No editable format. I need to make adjustments and cut it afterwards. I have an iMac 27 "2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 and OS X 10.8.3. IMovie '11.

I would suggest using your ElGato.
Record the video in MP4 or h.264. They should be roughly equivalent quality since h.264 is more efficient.
These will import and edit directly in iMovie.
Normally I recommend that you convert mp4 video in HD sizes to Apple Intermediate Codec before editing, but this is standard definition video so it may edit just fine as is.
If you want to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec, there are two ways. (Three ways if you have the EyeTV 3 software).
    1) Convert it using the EyeTV 3 export menu.
    2) Import to iMovie and choose Optimize - Full
    3) Drag the MP4 into MPEG Streamclip (which is a free app) and use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec for the compression. Then add to iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.
The alternative are the Firewire-based DACs from Grass Valley. They will convert to DV, and in my experience do not produce enough qualtity difference to justify spending several humdred dollars more. After all, the original VHS is roughly 400x300 pixels, so it is never going to look like DV from a DV camera.
Personally I use the EyeTV Hybrid with the EyeTV 3 software. I do not know for sure, but I assume the EyeTV Video Capture is very similar, but without the TV Tuner.

  • Pictures I have taken in the past with my iPhone 5 are now a block and when I click the photo it says loading but never loads. It's like I never took the photos. There's only the blocks with no pictures. I can't click edit or anything

I'm trying to look at my past photos in my camera roll but all that's there is a block and when I try to click on it the photo says "Loading" but nothing ever shows up. I can't click edit or anything. When I plug my phone in to my computer and open the photo folder they're not even there. It's like I never took these photos

I notice that the home page redirects to a secure (HTTPS) address. I wonder whether there is a setting blocking this? What if you go directly to a secure page -- will it load?

How do I convert a PDF to a editable format?

    Hi;
If you are looking to make a PDF form fillable you can see this FAQ for help: http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-3511
If that doesn't answer your question you can clarify further what you need, or if it is a general PDF question and not related to FormsCentral you might get the best help in the Acrobat forums: http://forums.adobe.com/community/acrobat

  • Check against country-specific edit format

    Hi All,
Currently for VAT registration number, settings for VAT registration number using transaction code OY17 is as follows,
    Length: 9
Checking rule : 9 i.e. Check against country-specific edit format
Now the user wants to enter a registration number with a different format which SAP is not allowing to enter. The length of the number is 9. But it is still not accepting. Country is ES.
Can anyone let me know the relevance of the checking rule 9 i.e. Check against country-specific edit format. How the system validates the VAT registration number.
    Please help.

  • Convert video files to editable format to use on PrPro CS4

    Hello,
    I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 v4.2.1 (I can't use CS5 because I have a 32-bit system). I'm running it on HP Pavilion dv9750, Windows 7, 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7500, 2GB RAM (DDR2) and NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS.
I'm planning to create a clip of about 4-5 minutes, that would be projected on a big screen. My sources are photos, WMV (from Windows Live Movie Maker), MOV (from iphone 4), and MP4 files. I must use these sources. I'm aware my computer is pretty weak, but that's all I have right now. I know I should convert these files to a more editable format. Which one would you recommend? I'm using Xilisoft Video Convertor Ultimate 6 to convert my files (Maybe there is a way to do it through PrPro?)
I was thinking of creating the project in 9:16 ratio. None of the files are in HD, so maybe I should create it 720p quality? Which preset would you recommend? Which output would you recommend?
Thanks in advance for your help!

There are a number of video apps available in the iTunes App Store that can easily handle those videos without any need for conversions. Do a search in the iTunes app on your computer for the file types and it will show video apps that can open those file types.
If VLC 2 ever makes it to the iTunes App Store, be sure to grab it, it will be free, I use VLC 1.1 on my iPad for avi files, but it is no longer available in the iTunes App Store.

  • Looking for someone to convert a PDF booklet to editable format in InDesign

    Hi all,
I have a 25page booklet (8.5 x 11in) that is available in PDF. However, it's not editable (only can export the text to Word doc, but it comes out bad). So, I'd like to pay someone to take my PDF booklet and recreate it in InDesign into an editable format that I can edit the text content and change the photos. Deadline: June 16, 2012. Please email me at: [email protected] for more info and payment.
    Thank you!

  • My document is blank when I open it in Pages, you can see it in page preview but I can't edit or anything, help?

Please can anyone help?  I am opening a saved file which I can see in the template, but when I open it the page is blank.  When I go to print I can see it there but I can't edit or anything!!!

I posted this on some other threads, but here you go. Try this, worked for me.
if I understand it right, is this what you had?
I could see the contents of Pages & Numbers files is previews, but they were blank when opened. Apple tech support--in an hour long call--managed to find a fix for my issue. I hope it works for you.
Concurrently to the seemingly blank files, my computer happened to be  slowing down & stalling a lot, but while related to the problem, I don't know that this is a necessary symptom of anyone else's.
We deleted all the cache files in the ~/Libary/Caches folder, & emptied the trash. It said some files were in use, so we restarted and finished the trash disposal. Then we started up Pages & Numbers, and it was all good!  My computer went back to its normal snappy responses too.
I am sure someone could possibly narrow down which cache files might be causing an issue. But give this a try.
By the way, I am running Pages 9, on Mountain Lion 10.8.4 (recently updated) on a MacBook Pro. Disk Utility found preferences and disk verify normally. Activity Monitor showed no excessive CPU use and there was no shortage of  hard drive space. The problem was reproducable in safe mode. Deleting plists for iWork had no positive result. As for the slowdown, sometimes the computer would get stuck in spinning beach ball mode for a while, or freeze. The only think that worked was the cache purge.
    Good luck!

    SoCal thanks for the attention,
sorry for having wrote the question directly in the subject, but first i wrote it by text edit then copied it, but in the wrong place too.....
coming to my question, timeline settings are:
as it is a commercial promo that must be projected in a multiplex cinema, the 2K format is needed.
I've heard about transcoding services, and they are very expensive.
so i'm looking if there is a way to do everything by fcp.
the project will be delivered as SD DVD for archive pourposes and as a single file for the projection or eventually transconding.

Can I hook up Apple TV to my HDTV? If so, do I need anything other than the Apple TV box?

You'll need an HDMI cable to hook it to your TV.  Once you have that, you just have to plug in the Apple TV power and then plug it into the television using the HDMI cable.
    EDIT:
If you don't have wireless you'll also need an ethernet cable to hook the Apple TV up to your router so you can stream content from the internet.

  • Can I save a project from idvd as a .mov?or anything other than an idvdproj

Can I save a project from idvd as a .mov?or anything other than an idvdproject?

It's possible, but a fair amount of work to start from iDVD. Far easier is to export your project from iMovie (Share/Export) to the format desired by the web site (mp4, Flash, ??).
In either case, it will not be an interactive experience (in other words, you can have a video showing your video being selected, but the web user won't be clicking the menu button).
If you want a short intro (pictures and song), why not add that to the beginning of your iMovie project, so it all looks seamless?

  • Page layout appears incorrect in anything other than IE 10...?

    Hi
I have created a very simple microsite in Dreamweaver CS6 (my web design knowledge is very basic hence the ‘very simple microsite’!).
My site appears and work well in Internet Explorer (10) although when viewed in previous versions Firefox or Chrome the pages appear on the right hand side of the screen rather than centralised as it should.
I initially used one of the default fixed layout templates in Dreamweaver in which I have used tables on some pages but not on others?
Another strange thing is that I have a simple navigation bar at the top of the pages which consist of three rollover buttons ‘Next, Home and Back’ in that order.  However when viewed in anything other than IE 10 the 'Next' and 'Back' buttons have been reversed???
I thought it would be quicker to ask for some advice rather than try and work out the problem, so any suggestions will be very much appreciated!
    Many thanks
    Kim
