DSLR Camera Options

I'm fairly new to editing film, mostly from my GoPro and a older camera, but I'm in the market for a DSLR so I can bring my videography and editing to the next level.
My friend has a Canon 60d and it seems like a decent camera based on footage quality and FPS but I am unsure of what type of camera to buy, whether there is a better one out there than the 60d for that price range.
I like the flip out screen.
Doesn't need to be touch screen.
Going to be used for mostly shooting video but pictures will be taken also.
I can learn quickly so learning curve shouldn't be an issue.
If anyone has suggestions, or even a starting place to look for a camera, please don't be shy.
Thanks!

OK, that brought a chuckle. I said pretty much the same thing just the other day about my camera and the Canon 5D Mark III.
See, here's the deal. There are so many cameras that do so many amazing things, that so many people want. But the price is relative. I just spoke with a professional photographer on assignment in San Francisco to shoot tourist locations. He had the Canon 5D Mark III. We discussed the advantages of my GH3 and the superior features of his camera. I said that his video was stored even less compressed than mine, and his number of pixels was around twice mine. But the price is closer to three times mine. So I am still happy with my choice and when I see his lens that tops out at 300mm and I realize I can do twice that at half the size because my lenses are Four Thirds on a cropped sensor, I am even happier with mine.
When he talked about his megapixels I just laughed and said, "That's great if you need to shoot pictures for Billboards!)
So, now we have a situation where I am touting my GH3 and someone else says, "Ah, but mine is half the price".
I am willing to bet that if you bought the T3i, someone else would come along and say "Yes, but mine cost half of that" and they would be happy with their purchase.
It is funny how money is relative. And the value for the money is a personal issue. What do I need, why do I need it, how much am I willing to give up to save money or how much am I willing to spend (forgoing other important things like entertainment or food) all is very personal.
I am fairly well off financially for a telecommunications technician, and I can spend more because I made some money teaching video editing and writing about it. But it is readily apparent that a few of our friends here on the forum appear to be in very good shape financially. Appearances can be deceiving, of course, and I am sure they look at themselves as just doing OK, and see other people doing much better (like at auctions). Sorry guys, but that is how it appears.  People who see most of their movies on flights from London to New York or build monster editing computers that need their own electric company power station. You know who you are!
Yet others on this forum see things differently. The prices I pay for things and think I am getting a bargain - like my $150 tripod (purchased used) that finally took me into the world of Bogen/Manfrotto might totally freak out some people, and others would think that I should have spent more to get lighter legs.  And I may buy lighter legs for my 3029 head if I decide I like the way it works, or I may buy a completely new set for traveling. Who knows. However, there are people perfectly content to use their $50 tripod and would never give mine a second thought.
That said, I highly suggest that you spend time on http://www.dpreview.com and make sure that you plan as far ahead as your budget will allow. For me, I am probably going to be locked into my lenses for quite some time to come so moving to 35mm just isn't going to be an option. I didn't understand that as well when I made my purchase as I do now.
If you get the T3i you will end up locked into the size of the lenses that fit that camera. And the lenses cost me a lot more than my camera already, and there are always going to be lenses I want to add to my toolbox.
Compare the T3i to other cameras. If you are lucky, whatever you end up buying, you will be as happy with your decision as I am with mine. It's all relative. You need to choose for you. Hopefully this thread has helped you to focus on what you want, and need and can afford.
Good luck!
How would this thread help me focus on what I want? I am not looking for advise. The original poster had asked questions about DSLR cameras not me. I  pointed out that the key features between brands may be different. He latter stated he wanted to do time lapse photography after I suggested it. I needed time lapse photography for a client so I got the Nikon D5100. Next I will get a Canon T3i. I already now what I want. I was just trying to ask what features the original poster might need. It is great that you have all the money that you need but the original poster has a budget to follow unlike yourself. Having said that I am not sure why you made such a long reply to me?

  • Ipad uses with a DSLR camera?

Can an ipad be used for live view with a DSLR camera?

Several problems in the way on this, likely to never be solved on current generation HW.
    1) USB 2 doesnt have bandwith for live video.
    2) Camera could theoretically perform live 264 encode and then output via USB.  But I dont know of any DSLR cameras that do this, and then someone would have to write the SW on the ipad side.
Your best hope is non-live preview.   Snap a shot and then view on ipad.
With the new ipads high resoultion the ipad has the potential to be a great external view screen.
I want to be able to make sure my shots are exactly in focus before I set up long time lapse sequences.
Neither the viewfinder nor the camera's screen resultion suffice.
The best (least bad) option I've found so far is the Eye-Fi pro card.  The Pro version supports ad-hoc Fifi so you can beam photos directly to your iPad without carrying around a Wifi hub.
The ideal solution would be exactly the same app that works over USB so I dont have to disloge my 128GB SD card in order to put in the itsy bitsy 8GB Eye-Fi card.
You can do that throgh an arduously manual process of using the photo app to download, import, and then disply your photo.

  • Is there a way to use the Tablet Remote to control a Sony Alpha DSLR Camera?

I own a Sony Tablet and love the ability to use it as a Remote Control.  I also own a Sony Alpha DSLR...yet I can't get the remote control to control the Camera.  Has anyone figured out how to do this yet?  It's a little large, but would be amazing if the camera had DLNA and could automatically publish a photo on the tablet right after I took the pick...with the Tablet remote!!!
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hello Damon,
What is the exact model # of Sony Alpha DSLR Camera?
You can try “Learning from remote” feature if your DSLR camera is remote control capable.
Refer the following link for instructions:
    http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C1023514
Camera should be DLNA server capable in order to access pictures from it using DLNA application in the tablet.

  • Photos not showing up in photo stream after being imported to iPhoto from a DSLR camera?

I have a DSLR camera and for the longest time, I would import photos from a shoot to iPhoto and after about 20 minutes they would have all shown up in my photo stream on my Mac and my iPhone. But recently, the photos will not show up on either photo stream and trying to share a new photo stream with myself never works. Help?

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at some of the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • Connection to a DSLR camera.

I own a nice iPod touch, great device! I would like to be able to connect it to my DSLR camera in order to retrieve somes pictures and send them by email. I usually capture in RAW+JPEG. Ideally I would send the JPEG, but I guess sometime the RAW. If that could work, it will be the perfect combo, I wouldn't need to bring all the time my MacBook Pro for short trip. I guess an adapter that can read directly SDHC and compact flash would be better for transfer time. Also to prevent people to use this as an extension to the internal memory, The adapter would only allow copy the files. Any plan for such device?
    Cheers,
    Lingot

I'd love to see that kinda functionality too... but I don't see it coming any time soon, especially from Apple. Maybe a 3rd party piece of hardware from Nikon or Canon. Would be great to use the iPod to backup photos from your camera and send them via email.

  • File Upload field wiht Camera option!

Hi, I'm a web developer and I'd like to make my application accessible also from tablet. I tried the website with both default android Browser and Firefox browser; I saw that Firefox it is much more user friendly to touch and fast.
In the website there is a form with a file upload field that is supposed to be used with images; the default android Browser gives the user the possibility to choose the camera, take the picture, and then select it for the upload. I'd like to know if there is the possibility to configure somewhere Firefox to add the Camera option with Astro and OpenOfficeDoc. Do you think is possible?
Or do you know how this could be realized?
    Thank you in advance.
    Federica

Interesting! I think there is a different site to offer feature suggestions for different Mozilla products, but I'm not sure where the Android one is. (I'm assuming that the option isn't available yet...)

  • Get photos from camera option in Bridge CS5

I really would like to use the "Get photos from camera" option in Bridge CS5, as it would save me a few steps in my normal workflow (dowload images from my Canon 40D with EOS utility, convert to DNG, delete CR2 files, update metadata with copyright information), but when I try with with a large number of images, some RAW images are not downloaded and converted. All jpg images are downloaded. So I would get e.g. images 1.dng, 1.jpg, 2.dng, 2.jjp, 3.jpg - in othere words the 3.dng file would not download. Any help would be most sincerely appreciated.
BTW - when I use the Canon EOS Utility, all files get downloaded, but then these are all cr2 files.
I use Windows 7 64-bit as my OS.
    My thanks in advance.

On further testing, it appears that the download function works fine as long as the "Convert to dng" function is left unchecked. So the file loss occurs during the conversion process. I have looked but cannot find an answer - is there a way to batch convert downloaded cr2 files to dng from within Bridge? Or does one have to load up the DNG Converter separately?

  • CS5.1 support for new DSLR cameras (D600)

I would like to understand the business decission (if there is any) why Adobe decided that for new DSLR  cameras support they will update only the Camera Raw version for the current release CS6 and not respecting the legacy for the n-1 release (updating the Camera raw for CS5.1).  This is a serious concern and disapointment.  Does it means that each time Adrobe has a new release , if i chnage the DLSR i am FORCED to upgrade and pay 190$ eventhus I do not need the new release features?

Ah, thanks guys - I am very very happy to eat crow on that one!
The actual point of my post was to make me feel better, and boy did it work!    I did not expect any actual relief, so actually now the post is twice is good as I thought - I was actually wrong!
Anyway, I might mention (I didn't get into all the details) that I actually canceled the order for the d800e (the "e" version was backordered until just recently), as the d600 was just announced as my order was about to process.
So actually I am in the same bad situation as the previous poster, but maybe now I will go back to the d800 - saving a $450 upgrade to CS6 actually saves half the difference in price between the cameras.
And sorry for the rant on the 2 analogies.  It was not a troll.  I vaguely remember in my research that Lightbox comes with ACR, is that true?  Lightbox doesn't come with CS5.5 MC, but I wonder if i were to buy it ($99??) that'll give me the latest ACR that supports the d600, and problem solved.  I assume once i have the latest ACR it'll let me open straight into PS and not make me go through Lightbox and then PS?
Anyway, if that is correct, that would be a much better answer to the original poster (and it saves him $100).  Other good answers (if this Lightbox hack won't work), might be:
"It's an incredible amount of work to support nearly every camera and lens ever made in ACR, so even though it comes free with your software, you don't get free updates once your software moves to a new version."
    or
"The d600 began shipping nearly immediately upon announcement, and it takes a while to update the software."  (perhaps the responder didn't realize it, but this was the situation with the d600.)
But the car-story and "if you can afford a new camera, you can afford to pay adobe" were pretty tragic answers - someone needed to call you on it, or you would have only served to upset the original poster.
Ha, PEBKAC, that is pretty good.  Not very easy to pronounce, though.
I must say my last dozen interactions with adobe have all been negative, except this one, so maybe things are turning a new leaf.  You're lucky I didn't get into the story of when my HD crashed, and I had to call Adobe to re-activate my old CS4 PS.  It's awesome getting literally laughed at by the activation help desk person.  (I had owned the software for 3 years at that point, and had only ever activated it once.)  ...who just assumed I was lying.  "here now let me tell you how to deactivate the old version" "the HD is dead, it ain't going to happen" "well let me show you again, because you need to do that..."
Oops, I did get into that story, didn't I?

  • I am unable to get my iMac to recognize my Canon DSLR camera.

I have a Canon EOS 50D DSLR Camera that I can't get my Mac to recognize when I connect the camera to the computer. Is there a driver that I can download for this? Anybody else have this issue?

Or with a card reader or just the camera attached, the camera's memory card can appear as an external drive on the desktop; and you can drag/drop copies from there into a folder on the desktop for use outside of any one application, or burn the folder to a DVD or CD.
I use a great, free third-party image editing software so I do not use iPhoto.
While it is OK, and has fair features, the content in iPhoto can
be more difficult to find later; the application has hiding places.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can LabVIEW process images in RAW format? Can LabVIEW handle images in the multimegapixel formats produced by some of the current DSLR cameras (e.g. 5000x3500 pixels)?

Can LabVIEW process images in RAW format?  Can LabVIEW handle images in the multimegapixel formats produced by some of the current DSLR cameras (e.g. 5000x3500 pixels)?
Can LabVIEW be programmed to remotely acquire images from a commercial DSLR camera with DirectShow capability?  e.g. Canon Rebel T2i.

    1) So RAW files have a multitude of possible file extensions / formats, and it depends on which of these extensions you use. If the image can fit in memory, it can be brought into LabVIEW. An image of that size should be able to come into LabVIEW. Are you considering using NI-Vision to do this? You would look into the VI called "IMAQ ReadFile." There are a certain set of standard formats that can be read.
    2) If a camera is DirectShow capable, and there are USB drivers available to access that camera through a Windows machine, then you should be able to bring that camera up in NI's software such as LabVIEW.
