DSLR Fast Playback

First off I'm running Premiere CS5 on an iMac 2.93 GHz with 4GB RAM with a RAID 0 external footage drive over FireWire 800.
When I play back DSLR footage at normal speed everything runs well. However when I try to fast forward or especially reverse, the playback begins to lag until it is almost not playing at all. The problem obviously goes away if drop the footage on a timeline and render.
What I'm wondering is which part of my system is causing the problem. Is it that I don't have CUDA GPU installed? Not enough RAM?
Thanks.

What I'm wondering is which part of my system is causing the problem. Is it that I don't have CUDA GPU installed? Not enough RAM?
You'll be happy to know that my computer would beat up yours and steal its lunch money, and I still can't playback DSLR footage in high speed all that smoothly
H.264--the codec at the core of your DSLR footage--is pretty processor intensive when it comes to playback and editing, and trying to play the file back faster just makes that even more difficult. Beyond that, the nature of H.264 (at least the way it's used in DSLRs) is that you don't have whole frames one after another like you do with other "I-frame" codecs. There are independent frames every so often, and in between, the frames are predicted from the independent frames. That's OK when you're playing back in real-time, but accelerating playback requires more processing power to look ahead and backward to fully recreate the predicted frames. I can get decently smooth playback at 2x and probably 4x speed, but faster than that and the wheels come off. Playing in reverse in real-time is a no-go. It's the nature of the beast.
Surely, a faster processor would help, as would more RAM, but you're more or less locked in with the iMac. Have you tried setting your playback resolution to 1/2 or even 1/4?

  • Fast playback

I've got iTunes 7.0 installed on my PC. I'm running Windows XP.
Problem: When I'm running iTunes in the background of a game the playback is fast and choppy but that never happened before I installed 7.0 does/has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to fix it that doesn't involve uninstalling and reinstalling a previous edition.

Install 7.01 and it will work ok - at least it did for me.
I tried the other suggestions of changing the Quicktime bit rate in the Quicktime Control Panel and that wasn't sufficient. New version of iTunes works ok with DirectX games in WinXP pro.

  • Video Import Problems - Too Many Thumbnails, Too Fast Playback

I have a Sony (Digital 8) connected to my new iMac via Firewire. When I try to capture the video, it appears that iMovie is creating a separate thumbnail clip per every second of video, so I end up with 1000s of thumbnails. I was able to capture video fine a couple months ago so I'm not sure what changed (software update?). Also, when I play back, it plays at twice the speed. I've scoured the internet and have found similar-but-not-exact posts, but NO solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Sorry! I was thinking of iMovie HD 6 - the previous version to iMovie '08 - in which you can choose what kind of new project to create, thus:
..note that it offers 'HDV 720p' as an option (..beneath 'DV').
But, somehow your import is presenting itself to iMovie '08 with - it seems - only 1 field per frame ..hence it's playing twice as fast as it should, and you've got all those extra thumbnails, as if every frame (..or, as you say, every second of playing time..) is a separate clip.
Erm ..I wonder if the internal clock had stopped in your camcorder, so that every shot has the exact same date and time stamp. In that case - noooo-oo-oo ..then iMovie would fail to recognise individual clips, instead of treating every second as an extra clip.
I have had a similar thing happen with a fairly old (1999) miniDV tape: when importing into iM'08 I got lots and LOTS of separate clips instead of one continuous clip. That was caused by the tape being old, perhaps badly wound onto the spool ..certainly not having been fast-forwarded and then rewound each year as ought to have been done, to prevent magnetic "print through" and physical pinching, etc, on the spool.
Camcorders - especially Sonys - have circuitry inside them to disguise bad tape replay: if a field or frame is missing, the camcorder can 'regenerate' it by playing the previous field or frame again ..the human eye doesn't really notice this fakery. But that is NOT done when the signal's played out along the digital FireWire link: if the tape's bad, then a faulty signal arrives at the other end ..in this case apparently at your Mac, or at iMovie.
Try winding and rewinding the tape a few times, and/or playing it through, and then trying to import it. ..Is that any better?

  • Faster playback for mpeg-4 movies and m4b audiobooks

    Hello,
Videos in mpeg-4 and audiobooks in m4b can be sped up in quicktime. Is there anyway to do the same thing when using this media on the iPhone?
    Thanks,
    Eunice

I'm assuming that the MPEG-4 movies are actually DVD's? You might want to try a 3rd party software such as DVD to Nokia.

  • Importing HDV into iMovie, playback turns into fast motion

    Everything was going fine..
connecting, recognise the jvc ji hd100, importing the hdv 720p 50/25 clips,
but then when playback, i found out the clips imported was in fast motion..
tried most combinations i can possibly think of,
    also changing the cam settings,
    didn't work out tho.
    stil trying hard..
    anyone? many thanks!

Before importing JVC HDV 720p you must select HDV 720p in the 'Create new project' dialogue box:
..otherwise it will play at double-speed!
(..That's because the JVC version of HDV, i.e; 720p, uses single "progressive" - i.e; entire - frames, instead of two interlaced fields per frame.
The fast playback is caused by iMovie playing two frames one after the other as if they were fields. If you choose 720p before importing, all should be well..)

  • Qosmio X870-1006X: fast movie playback from HDD

hi, i'm new here and I want to asa question..
    I recently bought a qosmio.
It was working great, until one day I tried to watch a movie from HDD.
It was great and all but then I realized that the voice pitch is higher.
It started to sound a little bit like chipmunk and the video play speed is faster than it should (maybe this is the cause of the sound problem))... but when I try too play a movie from a DVD disc it works perfectly fine.
I tried every video I have in my HDD, and every single one has the same problem.
    Can anyone help me?

In your case I would recommend checking the Player settings you are suing to playback the movie clips from the HDD.
As additional option might be the usage and test of different player software; as mentioned by Keany, the VLC player is one of the best and freeware players you can use. It handles almost all possible file formats.
In case this fast playback and high voice would still appear using different tools, I would recommend checking the HDD for possible malfunction.

I am primarily editing GoPro videos with effects like TimeWarp or Twixtor and color correction.
I have tried to run the PPBM6 program with no success. I kept getting failure to access files.
I have been looking at adding a second GTX760 with SLI so they will work together.  And possible removing the Quadro if it is slowing things down.
Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

...are you SURE your 760 GPU is "enabled" by PPro, and giving you the option of "Mercury Playback Acceleration" under  "General Preferences" ??? If the "Mercury Acceleration" is GREYED OUT and limits you to "software Only", go to Studio 1 website and learn to apply the well known "hack" to enable your 760 in PPro,OR, download their simple program to do it for you.
...Your machine is POWERFUL....especially with your CPU overclock......you MAY want to increase your memory to 32 GB if you are using After Effects....even PPro MAY run better with 32 GB, depending on your workflow.....most systems like yours have at LEAST 32GB system memory.
.....The GoPro codec is natively HIGHLY COMPRESSED and difficult to process, even for beefy machines. That is why they provide the free Cineform tool,( which used to be an expensive professional editing codec), to convert some,or,all of your footage to a more "edit friendly" AVI codec, which will FLY on your machine. HOWEVER, those new AVI files are HUGE.....TRIPLE the original size and requiring a LARGE and FAST disk transfer system. Right now, your single 7200 drive for your media is your SLOWEST component in the chain. The CHEAPEST improvement for you would be to add another MATCHING 2TB 7,200 rpm drive to your existing one and then use the 2 drives to create a fast RAID 0 directly off the mother board to improve the speed of your "media drive". THEN, you MUST insure that this RAID 0 is DILIGENTLY BACKED UP in case of a drive failure in the RAID. This ALSO means you must protect against an unexpected power failure which could destroy the RAID data if the failure happened during a critical write operation.....so,a good UPS is required.
You can OBSERVE how the various components in your system are performing while performing strenuous tasks by bringing up the "task manager" window and watching the CPU load.... if all cores are PEGGED at near 100%, you are "CPU bound". As you are ALREADY overclocked, you can't do anything other than to TRANSCODE your footage to the free Cineform. Your ENABLED GPU can be observed....real time....using the free MSI Afterburner,( or, similar).  Certain operations are accelerated by the GPU with PPro....not ALL!!  Scaling and some effects will use use the "Mercury Acceleration" while rendering previews AND during export. In some cases, rendering previews,or, exporting can be sped up by TEN TIMES by Mercury Acceleration. Watch the "GPU Usage" on Afterburner to see if the GPU is indeed being used, and if you are "saturating" it to its capacity of 100% with accelerated effects.
Make sure your Windows is fully updated to the current time........make sure your NVidia 760 has the most recent driver and DON'T use the Quadro for now. Set your "Windows page file" to be STATIC on your "C" drive at 24GB. Disable "Hibernation" Set all drives NOT to allow "indexing". Do NOT allow any spinning HDD to be over 50% filled....performance WILL decrease.....make sure any HDD is defragged,( do NOT defrag an SSD ! ). Stop all unnecessary processes, esp. anti-virus programs, while editing. Find out how to best "tune" windows to speed it up at the PPBM 6 and 7 websites.
BE AWARE that the "run of the mill" SSDs use cheaper Sandforce controllers, and are less suited to handle highly compressed digital video files. Samsung PRO models and recent Crucial M550 series SSDs ONLY are recommended for video use. Both these non-Sandforce SSDs maintain high WRITE speeds,( over 400MB/sec), AND maintain their high speeds after reaching their "steady state" condition. Cheaper EVO series and non-Marvell controlled SSDs MAY lose their fast write speeds over time and SLOW YOU WAY DOWN !!!  Test your current SSDs by transferring large video files between them  and watching MB per second that appears under "details" in the pop up window during transfer. Make sure none are slow.....test them with HD Tune Pro as well.
Certain non-Adobe plug-ins and certain effects may NOT use all the CPU threads well,or, may not use the GPU.....forcing the CPU to do additional work. You will have to identify problem plug-ins,or, effects by switching them on and off to see if any cripple your system.
Your machine is POWERFUL.....go to PPBM7 website and read the "tweakers" page to learn more....then, register for free and TEST your machine with their video benchmark test for PPro. It should do WELL.....AND it will help identify if you have any "bottlenecks" which are impairing your system.
Good Luck !!!!!.....THEN, start using CC 2014.....like Patton said : "...all glory is FLEETING !!"......so is the lifespan of former PPro versions !!!!!!

  • Canon DSLR footage immediately stops when playing back.

Our company just bought this package specifically for the native DSLR support. When we upload our footage from the DSLR, the playback immediately stops after roughly about a 1/2 second. It does this in both the source monitor and in the timeline. However it does allow you to scrub through the footage. But ironically when you try to scrub at the same speed as a playback, the playback head will stop and go back to the beginning. It is impossible to edit this way and it's very frustrating. Any thoughts on what could be going wrong?
We are shooting with a Canon t2i and have been converting them through Mpeg Streamclip in the past and editing in Final Cut.
The Premiere version is updated to 5.0.3
    I'm using an iMac OS X 10.6.4 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.

I should also mention we have a lot of other video software on this particular machine. Here's a snapshot to give you an idea. Could it be that one of these programs are conflicting?

  • Slow motion, reverse playback and others

    Dear members:
After doing some research that included help files for Final Cut Express HD and Apple's support pages I haven't been able to find a straight and definited answer to my question.
I am trying to find ways to add slow motion, reverse playback and fast playback effects to my sequences in Final Cut Express HD but haven't found a way to do it. Some pages I found seem to indicate that these functions may not be available in Final Cut Express HD but they are not specific enough. I honestly can't believe that an application that is meant to provide professional results wouldn't offer these which are probably some of the most used effects in video.
Do any of you know if and how these effects can be used with Final Cut Express HD ?
In case it can't handle these effects, how much would an upgrade to Final Cut Pro HD cost if I am coming from Final Cut Express HD ? Is there an (reasonable) upgrade path ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Best regards,
    Joseph Chamberlain

I'm sure you can do this w/ FC3xpress - although I haven't used that app in years- but you can try this:
-Select the clip you want to add the 3ffect to then press Apple-J
-That should bring up the menu where you can determine the new speed percentage.
-If it doesn't have the Reverse checkmark option (I don't think it did in earlier versions) you can do a negative percentage to make the clip play in reverse.
Also it looks like there is no way to upgrade from Final Cut 3xpress to Final Cut Studio
You can upgrade from a few apps but Express isn't included in that list.
The list is here if you'd like to see for yourself.
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
And if you click the buy you have the option to buy the upgrade (intead of the crossgrade)

  • Record and playback video in slow motion

    Hi
I am COMPLETELY new to labview and am having some trouble.
I would like to record a video using a USB camera and be able to play it back on multiple occasions at different speeds.
The file attached is what I have so far. The signal generated at the top is controlling the equipment I am recording. Currently, I am saving the video to the hard drive in AVI format and retreiving it to watch again. However I would like to be able to play this at different speeds and be able to pause/rewind. Is this possible? I would also prefer not to have to save and retreive the file and much prefer it to stay within the system memory.
    Thanks in Advance

    Hi!
In your program you set the "frames per second" input on the "Init AVI" Vi to 50. If your camera is set up to acquire 50 frames/sec this is ok. But your "playback" loop will (as it is) run at much higher rate, since it is not limited in speed. You need to control the playback rate with a delay function (maybe the Wait (ms)-vi). If the acq-rate is 50Hz, you need to limit the playback loop to 50 iterations per sec -> 20ms delay.
Set the delay to a lower value for a faster playback, or higher value for slow motion playback.
If you decide to use the AVI-vi:s you need to associate the video with a file. You can however keep the frames in memory by simply create an array of images and write to them instead of to the AVI-file. Modify your code like this:
    1) Create an array of IMAQ-images, Note that you need diffrent images on each index in the array.
    2) In your acqure-loop. Instead of writing to the AVI-file, write to the array at index "i". Note that you must modify this image, so retreive the image-ref at array index "i", then modify it by writing to it, the put the image-ref back in the array.
    3) In your playback loop.Read image-ref to display from the array by index "i".
    Done

  • Quicktime 7 streaming playback speed problems.

    Hello,
I am currently using QT 7.6.6 to stream asx/asf video files.  As these files are lectures, I like to watch them between 1.5X and 2X.  When I adjust the playback speed, the load speed stays the same.  As a result, after less than a minute my playback stutters.  Is there a way to have the stream load faster, so that I won't have to wait 20 minutes for enough of the file to load before I start my faster playback?
    Thanks for all the help.

Having just updated my G4 with the new QuickTime 7.5.5, I can say that this fixed the problem I have been having- hoorah!
I appreciate the response from Sig, although I still can't seem to find the QT discussions page from the discussions home page on the Apple site, which is why I posted the problem on the Tiger page.

  • Multicam playback plays infinitely

I have CC 2014 and in the older CC, sometimes when you started playback in Multicam mode with the timeline panel selected, it would continue playback and stop responding to any commands and play infinitely until you kill Premiere in task manager. Now it's doing this even with the program monitor selected so MC has become useless. Help?

This is the fourth thread I know of dealing with problems where multicam playback either won't stop at all at least keeps playing for a few seconds after the Stop command. Congregating in a single place will aid our efforts to get a handle on this. Please switch to this thread: Fast playback (multicam) won't stop until end of timeline reached.
