.dsstore keeping me from copying files

I am trying to copy files from one external drive to another. The Copy process gets almost to the end and then I get a message saying The operation cannot be completed because there is already a .dsstore file (not exact words).
What causes this and how can I get around it?
I'll run the copy again just to get the exact words and post them.

You should be able to use either "Carbon Copy Cloner" or "SuperDuper" (free for this purpose) to copy your case-sensitive volume to an empty case-insensitive one. Make at least two such copies on different drives. One is not enough to be safe.
Note: If there are any name conflicts — that is, files in the same folder with names that differ only in case, such as "File" and "file" — then you will either get an error or one of the files won't be copied. You must ensure either that no such conflicts exist, or that the consequences are not important. How you do that is up to you. Unless you went out of your way to create such conflicts, they probably don't exist.
Then erase the source volume in Disk Utility as case-insensitive. This action will wipe all data from the volume.
Restore from one of your backups using the same application you used to create it, or use the "Restore" feature of Disk Utility, which will be faster. Search its built-in help for the term "duplicate" if you need instructions.

  • How can I prevent iTunes from copying files to C drive?

I keep all my music files on my D drive. When I installed iTunes, I made sure that each song title in the library was linked to the mp3 on the D drive. Recently I found about 155 music files that are now duplicated in a folder on my C drive named "iTunes music" Most the file modification dates are either 9/11/2010 or 10/25/2010. I tried to think of any action I've taken that might have caused this. The only unusual thing I've done recently with iTunes is try out a new accessory called TuneUp. I've used it to find album art and find details about some songs that were missing, like what album the file came from etc. Is it possible that TuneUp is creating new modified versions of the music files rather than applying the updated data to the original files on the D drive?

That sounds like a good guess.
I know nothing about TuneUp or how it works, and I can't recall where iTunes keeps it's Artwork, but they may very well be related.
Is your settings in iTunes for copying files/where they are stored correct? Perhaps installing the 3rd party application made a change to your settings.
Try tracing back one of the files to your library and see if you can identify an action you took that created the files. For example... look at one of these suspect files and find it in the iTunes library. Sort your music by Date Added and see if you can find a correlation.

  • How do I keep iTunes from moving files when I add them to my library?

I use a site where artists give away their songs via torrent, so I like to seed as much as possible. But recently when I've added files, they're removed from their original folder and moved to a more generic "music" folder. How can I keep iTunes from doing this, so that my uploads aren't interrupted?

In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferenes > Advanced, and make sure that "Keep..." and "Copy..." are both unchecked.

  • How do I keep FCPX from saving files to my internal HD?

I have my project on an external drive, but it keeps saving to my internal drive also, eating upp al of the space until it can no longer function because there is no space left.
I have already unchecked "copy files to FC events folder" in import settings, but the problem keeps happening.  Is there an easy way to set a scratch disk where every single file will be saved to like in FCP7?

    'scratch disk'? that is obsolete…
FCPX has TWO sorts of main data: Projects and Events.
Both can be located on your internal, external drives or somewhere on a LAN.
    Have a read here:
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.0.6/?lang=en-us#verb6acba30
Move your Event from within FCPX to the extHDD and you're done.-

  • How do I keep podcasts from copying to backup?

I just backed up my itunes library to CDs for the first time and was surprised to see my podcasts copying. I have the settings set to only keep unplayed podcasts, and all have been played and removed from my ipod. They are also un-checked in my itunes library. However, on my backup every single podcast was saved. Once I've played them, I have no need to keep them. How do I keep this from happening the next time I do a backup?
    Thanks.

  • Trouble accessing files from/copying files to Time Capsule

I'm having two issues which I haven't seen on the forums.
    1. When I try to open a file stored on the TC, I get an error message: "Connection failed...There was an error connecting to the server...etc...," however, as soon as I close that warning box, the file opens. So at least I can get the files open, but I get that annoying message every time I go to open a file.
    2. When I try to copy a large file to the TC, the file will look like it's completely copied over, but it actually is only partially copying and is unopenable.
I did not notice these issues before installing Snow Leopard, so I'm guessing it's related, but thought I'd try here. Thanks for any ideas...

To start with moving the Time Machine backup as you have requested is not a case of simple copy and paste.. TM does not backup on network drives in the same way as it does on local drives. You can much more easily move the Network backup to the local drive than visa versa as you are wanting to do.. IMHO don't bother.. keep the 1TB drive for a few months until you build up a complete backup history on the TC.. from that point you are unlikely to need earlier backups and you can wipe them.
If you wish to try the details are here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    See Q18.
Apparently this does not even work anymore with Mavericks and especially Yosemite.. so do not be surprised if after spending a day or two copying the TM backup to the TC it then refuses to connect.. and you have to scrub it and start a new clean backup anyway.
Can I have the Time Capsule be wireless for my internet connection AND mount the internal drive via ethernet to do the file transfer?
You can do this and we recommend it for first backup to the TC.. which is very large and should be the best as this first backup is then the basis for every increment thereafter.. TM never completely wipes this first backup.
It is easy.. plug the computer into the TC by ethernet.. and turn off the wireless.. then do the backup.. once completed.. disconnect the ethernet and turn the wireless back on.

  • How do I keep iTunes from indexing files on external drive?

    Hi,
I did a clean install of Vista from XP. I used Windows Easy Transfer to restore my As part of the upgrade, I did a fresh install of iTunes 8. I think I was running 7 before but this may not be significant, and I may be mistaken.
iTunes automatically (?) indexed all MP3 and m4a files both on my C: drive and on my external drive. These files are largely duplicates; I only want my music on C: to be indexed by iTunes. I've searched and searched here, Help and with Google, have found some very good information about moving files to another drive, but haven't managed to find a way to limit the drive that iTunes looks at. (I have 3 external drives but only the one has music files on it.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By default, iTunes copies the music into /My Music/iTunes/iTunes music folder.
Yes, but I don't use the default.
iTunes does not move files from their original location. It copies them to the iTunes music folder when they are added to the library.
I'm pretty sure mine does not copy them; it creates pointers to them in their original locations. I believe this is an available option to the default.
If they are not showing up in iTunes and they are not in the iTunes music folder shown in iTunes prefs -> Advanced - iTunes music folder location, then you are good to go.
Then I'm good to go. I've got 2800 tracks in my iTunes music folder, plus another 6000 elsewhere on my C: drive, all of which are correctly listed in iTunes. (There also a bunch of WMAs which, for these purposes, don't exist). None of the ones from my J: drive are listed in iTunes and none have been copied to the iTunes music folder. Thanks again for your help.

  • How do I keep iTunes from copying songs from iCloud to playlist?

  • How do I keep iTunes from copying apps I bought on my iPad onto my iphone?

I just got an iPad and I've had an iPhone for quite awhile. I put a bunch of apps on the iPad but they were all ones I already had on the phone. Then I added some new games for my son and next time I synced my iphone, iTunes put the new games on there too even though I didn't select to add them.
Is this a setting I missed? Is iTunes trying to sync my phone with the iPad?

With your device attached to the PC go to iTunes (on the PC).
Select your device from the sidebar.
Click on Apps (at the top).
Scroll to the bottom of your listed apps and just underneath, you need to uncheck "Automatically install new apps"

  • Windows 8.1 Network Share 0x8007003b Error Copying Files

    Hi All,
I'm having an issue when copying files from a Windows network share. If the file is above 5MB it will start copying and then after a minute or two I will get an error such as:
    Interrupted Action
An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.
Error 0x8007003B: An unexpected network error occurred.
The network share is in a different office and is accessible over a point-to-point VPN, so the connection is not that fast.
But before everyone tells me to start diagnosing the router and or VPN please take note of the following:
My colleague who is running Windows 7 can copy files from the network share fine
If I run a Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 laptop I can copy the files across fine
I also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client
VMs to a similar speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
There is also a noticeable difference visually when copying using Windows 8.1 and Windows 7:
Windows 7 - The progress bar progresses smoothly giving the current speed and estimated time remaining
Windows 8.1 - The progress bar progresses in a jumpy fashion. E.g. it shows no progress, then after a minute it jumps and shows 16% progress, then shows no further progress, then jumps by another 18%. There is no estimated time remaining.
I ran Wireshark to investigate what was going on at the network layer. I see the following behaviour:
Windows 8.1 - The file is copying fine then all of a sudden there are a lot of TCP dupack packets. After which the Windows 8.1 client sends a RST packet and then the error pops up.
Windows 7 - The file is copying fine then you also see a load of TCP dupack packets, however no error is displayed and it continues copying fine.
I'd appreciate any help with this I'm hoping there are some settings I can change to make Windows 8.1 behave more like Windows 7!

    To answer your original questions.
Do you mean the file below 5 MB will copy fine ?
5MB is not a hard limit. If the file is small enough it will copy before it errors out. A file of around 5MB or so fails with an error.
Have you tried to copy the files from another Windows 8.1 machine (This will help us to verify whether the issue is casued by the specific machine)?Have you tried to copy another file from the network share to have a check ?
Yes I've tried from another Windows 8.1 machine and have the same behaviour. It is the same with different files from the network share. And the same with different network shares.
I am seeing nothing in the event viewer when the error occurs. I do not believe this to be a VPN issue because I can recreate this situation perfectly. As I mentioned in the original post- I
also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client VMs to a similar
speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.
Basically, I had virtual machines all on the same local network. One virtual machine was hosting a file share with files on it. I created one Windows 7 VM and one Windows 8.1 VM. Using VMWare Workstation you can limit the network bandwidth to the VMs. When
I did not limit the network bandwidth I could copy all files of all sizes fine. However, when I limit the network bandwidth to a speed of around 30-50KBps, the Windows 8.1 VM fails to copy files with the same error. But Windows 7 VM copies the files fine.
The point of limiting the bandwidth in this way is to create a similar scenario to that I see when connecting over the VPN.
This all leads me to believe there is some sort of issue with copying files from fileshares over slow connections using Windows 8.1.
    Cheers,
    Zak

  • Copy File Fails error

I have a Pavilion dm4 and it is telling me that my Hard Drive is going to fail.
The original operating system was Windows 7 (64bit), but I 'upgraded' to Windows 8
I have backed up everything on an external hard drive
I purchased a new hard drive: WD Mainstream 500GB SATA 3
I ordered the system recovery disks from HP
Durning recovery I keep getting a 'Copy FIle Fails' error about half way through disk 2 of 3
I have tried several times and it keeps getting stuck
Someone suggested that it might be a BIOS problem, but I don't know how to navigate this tool. ( I have version F.26 I think)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello BvinR,
I understand you are getting a "'Copy FIle Fails" error on the second disc when you are trying to recover after a failed hard drive. I have checked the HP Pavilion dm4 Entertainment PC Maintenance and Service Guideand on page 2 it lists a 500 GB, 7200 rpm hard drive as compatible with your system. I am more inclined to believe there is something wrong with the recovery disc. If this is the case I would encourage you to contact HP technical support to see about getting the second disc replaced. Be sure to explain to them as you did here. Below is the contact links for HP Technical Support if you need them.

  • How to prevent copy files

I make ntfs permission read only to users to view files only but i want to prevent them from take copy of these files outside this shared folder to their own pc

I'm afraid it is impossible. If User have permission to read, you cannot stop them from copying files.

  • How do I copy and paste a shape (or layer) from one file to another keeping all of its attributes?

Our department currently uses MS Paint to place varied colored boxes for callouts on top of screen figures used in our documentation. As you know, MS Paint is not a robust image editing application, and we are frustrated at its limitations (especially not having a "non-destructive" edit capability). Consequently, we are evaluating a trial version of PS to see how a workflow could be developed that would allow the department to use callout boxes "stored" in a PS file that could be applied in an easy, consistent manner to our screen figures (but also keep each callout box editable) using PS.
Consequently, in PS using the shape tool, I created a file with our colored boxes for callouts, each on its own layer. Now I am trying to determine how you copy and paste a box (or layer) from this file to a "working" file (one containing a screen figure), while keeping all of its attributes (color, line weight, being editable, etc.). I can't seem to find an option to do this. Is there? If not, is there another workflow in PS that you can recommend for this type of procedure?

Thanks - I used the Layer > Duplicate command and it worked great!
P.S. How do you drag and drop a layer? I tried dragging a layer to the other open image, but nothing happened. Do you have to hold down a specific key for this (I'm using Windows)?

  • How do you read a large ( 100Mb) 3-D matrix from a file and make sure that you keep only one copy of it within the LV program for future use?

I have to deal with large 3-D, I16 matrices that are stored in files. This data represents the density of an object at a sample point in 3-D space. I need to be able to display a 2-D section through the cube in an Intensity Chart. Since I want to update images in the intensity chart in real time to show different sections on demand I cannot adopt the approach of reading a section from the file when required - the I/O time assocaited with the disk read is way to long.
The solution, is to keep EXACTLY one copy of the entire data set in memory at all times and then just get the required section on demand.
This changes the disk I/O time to a memory access time, which is fast enough for my puposes.
Here is the problem. Since the matrices are so large, I want to be very sure that I only keep one in copy of the data in memory. After a couple of weeks discussioin with Tech Support, and the development of several sample programs, they have agreed that it is not possible to do it with less than two copies of the data in memory.
This additional memory requirement is a real problem for me and I am hoping someone is ingenious enough to come up with a way of doing it with only one.
I can send a sample program illustrating the problem if necessary.
    Many thanks.

    Jean Pierre,
Thanks for your reply - most kind of you to take the time. But.....
This is exactly what I thought, and is similar in concept to the way I wrote my code. But it doesn't work. I modified you llb slightly by setting the variables to be I16's and setting the default array size to 54,000,000 and the default action to be initialize. ( I'll enclose a copy of my modified llb for you.)
Here's what happened. I start the windows task manager, loaded LV and the program and looked at the memory shown in the task manager. It shows about 28Mb before I start to run the program. I then single step through the program. When it gets to the output of the Initial Array the memory usage jumps to about 134Mb, indicating the creation of the first copy of the array. As you continue single stepping it jumps to 239Mb as you leave the Case loop and head for the Shift Register. This memory does not drop down again.
After talking with Platinum Tech Support, they agree and tell me that they cannot see a way to have just one copy of the array. That's why I posted it on the message board to see if there was anyone out there who had come up with an ingenious solution. It seems to be a serious limitation to labview.
Let me know what you think.
    Thanks once again.
