DTS, AC3 Decoding Audigy 2Zs or PowerDV

Hello All,
Q. according to creative the Audigy2Zs has Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, but does anyone know if this is hardware or software decoding.
Q2. I have Powerdvd 6 deluxe with all the audio packs. Do you disable the Audigy2zs decoder or keep it on. Double the juice twice the power!?
regards,
AL

(Q) Apparently it is HARDWARE decoding.
(Q2)
Case : If you disabled DVD software decoding ("S/PDIF Out") and enabled your soundcard's AC-3 / DTS decoders, your soundcard will be responsible for AC-3 / DTS decoding.
Case 2: If you enabled DVD software decoding of AC-3 / DTS, then the DVD audio data will already be decoded into surround sounds before sending to your soundcard. In this case, your soundcard will ALWAYS receive uncompressed surround sounds, and there is NO DIFFERENCE in enabling / disabling your soundcard's AC-3 / DTS decoders.
"Twice the power won't double the juice."

DVD-Audio never worked totally proper for me anyway through creatives driver. It was slightly better with Intervideo's WinDVD but not totally stable. Using Power DVD in Windows Vista & it works proper & is totally stable. All this to say the DVD-Audio feature in the Creative drivers was mostly a joke anyway. Get Power DVD. It works good for Wiondows Vista.

  • Pops sounds when Decoding AC3 with audigy

Hi, i want to make audigy zs decode ac3, doing the following:
in powerdvd 6 , i set to spdif out, and in audigy "use internal decoder" is enabled, it works fine with dts decoding, but with ac3 there's pops sounds during loud scenes, if i enable "dynamic range compress" in AudioHQ, the pops sounds disapears but the dynamic range is gone too, something i don't want because i really want to enjoy that sound.
Is there a way to listen the wide range sound of AC3, i mean with dynamic range enable without the pops sounds that produce when decoding ac3 with audigy zs?
someone has tried this or there's no chance to do it at all!

Well, a think all of you are not telling the truth, because you dont' even test it in the scene i mention(Lord of thr rings)
For you to know, there's movies that there's no pops sounds at all, like the original star wars trilogy, shrek , no problem, but in LOTR trilgy there's a problem.
Now for BigBen he said something different in:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=3043&quer y.id=4735#M3043
In that forum, i had and old computer Pentium III 500 MGHZ, that didnt,t work anything, Dvd audio, dts, ac3 decoding. nothing.
    I tried all and nothing.
finally i gave in, and bought another cpu because maybe it was an issue of the mother card,
i bought a Compaq DeskPro En(Pentium III 000MGHZ). now all the problems i had before are gone, except for the pops sounds in Ac3 decoding in LOUD SCENES, now this is common problem for most users, now if you say you don't have, well try lord of the rings Trilogy, Return of the king!

  • AC3 Decoding on Audigy 2ZS sol

A couple of months ago I posted about my troubles with getting AC3 decoding to work with the internal decoder of my Audigy 2ZS.
I've reinstalled windows 5 times and the audio software 6 times. I've moved the card between all available PCI slots in my computer, I've checked both the BIOS and windows for any possible shared IRQs or other hardware conflicts, I've checked for DMA issues.
I've tried a fresh install of XP with just the drivers, then the last driver updates and finally with a fully setup system.
I've tried WMP0 with both AC3filter and ffdshows internal filter, MPC 6.4.8.4, PowerDVD 5.0 and nVIDIAs PureVideo Decoder .02.50.
In any and all cases enabling s/pdif output in the software and using the internal decoder the sound output is filled with heavy stutter and sometimes disappears completely.
Using software decoding works fine though.
I've been through 4 week of correspondance with Creative customer support, who have shown great perseverance but in the end haven't been able to help with my problem.
Deem my surprise then when I chose to try out the 80 day trial of Windows XP Pro x64 and the AC3 decoding worked flawlessly in all players.
Well, xcept for nVIDIAs PureVideo Decoder that BSODs under x64 but that's a different issue.
Considering my rather exhausti've testing I'm firmly convinced this is a problem with the .84.xx drivers, especially since a friend of mine with a different hardware setup have the very same problems.
If any of you should suffer from a similar problem as mine I can't really say that this is a good "fix", specially if you don't have a 64bit processor, but I did work for me.
Maybe it's time to check out what the 2.03.004 x64 drivers do differently, hmm?
    My rig:
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Winchester)
    Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra SLI
    Gigabyte GV-NX66T28VP
    2x52 Mbyte DDR400
    WD Raptor 74Gbyte
    Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS

The decoding is done in software on all the cards. Allegedly the X-Fi has some hardware assist, but nobody's actually done any tests to prove that there's actually a reduction in CPU utilisation.
The reason the Audigy 2 ZS also supports DTS is because Creative has licensed DTS decoding on their cards and for every Audigy 2 ZS/X-Fi sold they pay DTS as well as Dolby a per unit fee. The reason the older cards don't support DTS is because they would have to pay an additional fee for every card already sold, which they don't really want to do.

  • Very sloppy playback with AC3/DTS Hardware Decoding with

I just bought the Audigy 2 ZS (plain)
I tried playing back DVD movies using SPDIF output on PowerDVD and I get VERY VERY sloppy playback, both with AC3 and DTS audio.
I thought it should perform better than my previous SB Li've! 5.

Which settings are you using and what kind speakers do you have? If you have analog speakers, are you doing the decoding with the software or with the soundcard? Check for the card whether AC3 decoding is enabled (in the Device Controls). If it isn't, try enabling that and setting the DVD software to SPDIF instead. Or if it's enabled, set the decoder to disabled/SPDIF, and set the DVD software to 5. and see if it's the same.
If you're using digital speakers then both should be set to SPDIF (so decoders disabled).

  • AC3 decoding on Audigy SE ca

    Hi!
I just recently bought a Soundblaster Audigy SE card + a 'Digital I/O module' in order to get SPDIF input capability, I thought.
    My HTPC-setup is very "special":
The HTPC uses the TVEdia (www.8dim.com)software with a RealMagic XCard which outputs the video stream as svideo to my CRT television, and all audio may be output by the TVEdia software as an AC3 stream using the external SPDIF connector on the XCard card
(previously I have been using the alternate stereo only output on the XCard card feeding my TV directly).
My intention was to use the coaxial AC3/ SPDIF output from the XCard card and input it into the newly installed Audigy SE card using the 'Digital I/O module', have the AC3 stream decoded by the Audigy SE card, or decoded in software, and then output as 5. sound using the 3 mini-jack output connectors on the Audigy SE card to my Logitech X-540 speakers.
This was meant to be an "interim"-solution before buying a proper receiever with AC3/DTS decoding capabilities.
However, I do not seem to be able to setup the Audigy SE card to perform AC3 decoding, neither in hardware nor does there seem to be any Creative-software based solution for achieving this on the Audigy SE card?
    Is this correctly observed?

The decoding is done in software on all the cards. Allegedly the X-Fi has some hardware assist, but nobody's actually done any tests to prove that there's actually a reduction in CPU utilisation.
The reason the Audigy 2 ZS also supports DTS is because Creative has licensed DTS decoding on their cards and for every Audigy 2 ZS/X-Fi sold they pay DTS as well as Dolby a per unit fee. • Audigy 2ZS S/PDIF pinou

I am trying to get information on connecting S/PDIF digital IN's and OUT's to an Audigy 2ZS card.
I have been reading quite a bit about this, but I see either incomplete information or none at all. What I've read has left me quite confused.
For instance, I read something about a 4 pole mini jack, as well as a 5 pole mini jack for the DIGITAL OUT connector. I also read somewhere that certain /8" to RCA "breakout" cables will NOT work for the digital I/O's because the ground(s) are in a different location.
Can someone provide COMPLETE pinout information for the connectors on this board, or, at the very least, ANY/ALL S/PDIF-relatd connectors?
I have made custom cables before, so if I just had the pinout(s), I'm sure I could come up with something.
    Thanks.

There are soundcards from other manufaturers that encode the multichannel wave into AC3 form, the feature is called Dolby Digital Li've. There have been many posts complaining about the fact that this feature doesn't appear on the new X-Fi, considering the price and that the feature has appeared on much cheaper hardware. There are several problems with Dolby Digital Li've. First of all, it is not the same as the regular Dolby Digital. DD and DD Li've are lossey compression formats, DD is bad enough, but owing to the fact that DD Li've is a "real time" compression format, the quality is much worse. Another problem is latency. There may be a considerable delay between the action on screen and the sound you hear, a serious problem for games. Creative make a DTS encoder, which is supposed to be considerably better than DD Li've, but I don't think it's available in Europe yet. I don't think you'll find any software encoders.
Is there any reason why you want to use a digital connection?

    Thanks for your reply
I am sorry for the problem you are facing.
To achieve outputs from all the speaker during speaker test, you will need to have an analog connection, or digital DIN connection.
That will be possible if you connect the three line out jacks on your soundcard, to the three audio input (analog jacks->green,black,orange) on your speaker, if it has this connection. Or, you may connect them using Digital DIN, if they have this connection.
If you are using digital connection (coaxial, optical), there will be no way to achieve sound output from all the speakers during 5. speaker test, as they carry stereo signal.

    Thanks for your reply
Your soundcard is Audigy 2 ZS
Your speaker is Creative Inspire 5. Digital 5500
You will need to have a 3:3 cable(with the color green, black, orange)
to connect your soundcard to your speaker, to achieve the 5. effects
    with games.
    Below is the connection:
    - Connect line out jack of Audigy 2 ZS
to 'Front' of Creative Inspire 5. Digital 5500 using the green color
    connection
    - Connect line out 2 jack of Audigy 2 ZS
to 'Rear' of Creative Inspire 5. Digital 5500 using the black color
    connection
    - Connect line out 3 jack of Audigy 2 ZS
to 'Center/Subwoofer' of Creative Inspire 5. Digital 5500 using the
    orange color connection
Once you have done the correct connection, play the game DOOM3.
Ensure you have selected either the EAX or surround option in the game
    settings.
    Does it work?

All commercial digital connection eg. optical or coaxial cable will only
carry PCM stereo signal. If you want to output the signal to a surround
    5. with extra EAX environment effects, it will not be possible at all
since it is only restricted to stereo channel signal.
As per current industry limitations, we are bound to follow the standard
one-signal output for all our SPDIF and Optical output jacks. This is
something that is currently shared by all vendors for all products.
Please note that all games are not dolby digital, even they are , it
will require certain motherboard to encode it to dolby digital signal,
which our soundcard does not support.
You can only use analog connections to gain true 5. surround for
    gaming..

    Dear Martin
    Thank you for the reply.
Computer games written with support for 3D audio do not require a Dolby
Digital Interacti've Content Encoder (DICE) to output multichannel sound,
with no exceptions. Sound devices that support the real time encoder
technology from Dolby will simply receive the multichannel wave file
output and encode it in real time to a somewhat modified Dolby Digital
bitstream. Creative does not support the Dolby Digital Interacti've
Content Encoder on any of its sound cards.
The only difference between a Sound Blaster card and an audio card that
has a real time encoder, is that you can make a one-wire, digital
connection from your audio card to your home theater receiver and enjoy
discrete multichannel sound from the game. However there will be a
continuous, slight delay, known as "latency", as the encoder is creating
and transmitting the bitstream, and of course the compression scheme
being used is "lossy" (i.e. not bit-accurate).
If you want to enjoy 3D audio in 3D enabled PC games in multichannel
surround sound with a Sound Blaster card, it is recommended that you
connect the analog outputs of the sound card directly to the analog
inputs of the receiver. This will require 3 cables for 5. surround
sound, one for front right and left, one for rear left and right, and
another one for front center and subwoofer. Though it requires more
cables than a real time encoder system, it will not have any latency
issues. When connecting PC audio to a home theater receiver, Creative's
latest sound cards such as Sound Blaster Audigy, Sound Blaster Audigy 2
are likely to provide higher quality audio than any Dolby Digital real
time encode system available for the PC today.

I got Logitech Z-5500 connected to Audigy 2 ZS on analog.
EAX and surround is working fine when using WinDVD("Analog Sound Card" and "6 channels" selected).
I can't get any sound from rear speakers when watching DivX files with AC3 audio stream. The sound that should come from the rear speakers comes out from the front :-/
AC3 filter 0.70b and .0RC5(set to SPIDF, and Audio console set to built-in decoder) - the same problem.
    What could be the problem?
    Tnx in advance!

Fact: WinDVD might say that it has DivX decoding, but that doesn?t mean that it can handle AVIs with AC3 audio. AVIs are not very confortable having AC3 audio within them (although all u need to play it in a standard DirectShow player are some filters). 2-ch deocding is as good as it gets for AC3 in WinDVD.
Fact: in order to get your Audigy 2 ZS to decode Dolby/DTS within WinDVD, WinDVD must be set to "Digital Output (SP/DIF) to external processor", the "Decode 96kHz/24bits" must be unmarked/deactivated, and the Audio Renderer must be set to "WaveOut".
This will send the decoding to the Audigy?s CPU.
Fact: EAX and CMSS3D SHOULD NOT/MUST NOT be on/acti've/marked when playing 5. ch audio (Dolby or DTS) since the EAX and CMSS3D alter the way audio is reproduced and both are basically a way to get multichannel audio from stereo sources wich a 5. ch track is NOT.
Fact: the Audio booster in WinDVD (Platinum) MUST NOT be set to anything (no Dolby Virtual Speaker, no TruSurround, no anything). These Are up/downmixing matrixes and also alter the sound. Not even WinDVD?s Dolby EX, since the built-in Dolby Surround EX/DTS-ES decoding of your Audigy it'ss sounds much better.
Fact: in order to get AC3Filter to properly send and the Audigy?s CPU to properly receive SPDIF, these are fundamental and NON-NEGOCIABLE:
) you need a player that allows to specify/set the renderer that will be use for audio (I personally prefer BSPlayer, other choices are MPlayer or VLC).
    2) These options MUST be set as such in AC3Filter (preferably RC5):
a] Main Tab = Ouput Channels: whatever - Output BitDepth: PCM 24bits - SPDIF Enabled.
b] System Tab = SPDIF passthrough Enabled for AC3 and DTS.
    Period.
    3) The selectable-renderer-player will have as renderer: SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [C000]. Not "DirectSound: SBAudigy2ZS", not "Default Audio Renderer", not anything but "SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [C000]".
And 4.0/4. up, as Speaker Settings.
And that should get you enjoying Dolby/DTS.
    Regards.

  • Connecting Soundblaster Audigy 2zs to Home Theater Amplif

Can I connect my Soundblaster Audigy 2zs directly to an amplifier and still get 5.,6.,or7. speaker setup? I feel it's kind of redundant to use a reciever when the Audigy has all the capabilities of a Home Theater Reciever. And it outputs sound at 92khz, which currently is only available on more expensi've recievers.
My goal is to use my pc as a souce and connect it directly to amps and speakers. I would like to put money I save on recievers into a high end speaker system
I have read in the previous posts that it may be possible to do 5. by getting an mini jack to RCA adapter for each channel. But no details on 6. or 7..

I am in the same situation as you. As the CL told me
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=5343 --
You can either use the audigy to decode the sound or your reciever to decode the sound with the SPDIF passthrough. Just whichever has the better specs.
From my situation I would recommend having speakers with analog hookups to the front/rear/center sub rather then the digital output. The only way to take advantage of the digital output is with a DVD and in that case you can just watch a DVD on your TV rather then your computer. For games the analog 5. hooks is better as well because with games it decodes it and with your reciever it would only have 2. sound.

  • DTS support with audigy 2 zs and inspire t5900

Can i have dts and dd audio with inspire 5.1 5200 or t5900 and audigy 2 zs ?
At link (http://www.creaf.com/speakers/source...rt-Speaker.pdf) inspire 5.1 5200 has no dts support with audigy 2 zs ...

    sussie,
Yes. The Audigy 2 ZS sound card support DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding so it will work with the speaker.

  • DTS, AC3 won't work

I am linking my Macbook Pro via HDMI to my TV and my polk audio surround bar to watch movies off my hard drive.
I am using divX 7 to open the movies. All the video is working, however the Audio on my AC3 videos is only playing static and on my DTS movies the audio is not playing at all and it just gives a warning saying that I need a Quicktime codec 8193.
I haven't been able to find the 8193 codec.
I have quicktime 10, Perian 1.2.3 and the latest DivX 7 plus. I also have VLC. The audio works through VLC however it is not AC3 or DTS quality.
I have enabled both the passthroughs as per the instructions at this link www.cod3r.com/2008/02/the-correct-way-to-enable-AC3-passthrough-through-quickti me/
    Things I have tried:
I have deleted DivX and re-installed it.
I have deleted Perian and re-installed different versions.
Ran software update on my mac.
    Opened with QT (Perian).
Cleaned up the quicktime/library codecs as per Perians recommendations on their support page.
    Searched unsuccessfully for 8193 codec.
My macbook pro is running the following:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    2.4 GHz Intel Icore i5
    Memory 4gb 1067MHz DDR3
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

This is usually a type of question way outside of the skills of people here, but who knows, I'll bump it just in case.
Only thing I could think of is that you have an older MBP where you need a separate digital optical cable.  As for the 8193 Codec, it's of course a newish DTS encoder/decoder.  If you were using Final Cut Pro X, you'd have it, but that'll cost you a few bucks.
    Try this:
    http://qt-ac3-codec.en.softonic.com/mac
I don't know if it's a safe download, but give it a try.

  • [Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS] Sound cutting out in middle of gamepl

I have Vista, and I never had this problem with XP.
I downloaded the Vista drivers and have ran Windows Update for all the missing drivers.
    When I run dxdiag.exe
I go to the sound tabs and find this.
The file ctaud2k.sys is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL). You may be able to get a WHQL logo'd driver from the hardware manufacturer.
    For Sound
    and Sound 2
Sound 3 says everythign is fine.

I've found that Audigy series cards "cut out" if you alter speaker properties in Vista Control Panel.
Creative umm... bug I think that's what they call it...
    For example
I find 6bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) is the highest quality I can set.
I've seen it on Audigy 2, Audigy 2ZS and Audigy 4. Win32 and Win 64.
Is your adapter set to studio quality If so - that's most probably it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Question on hooking up an Audigy 2zs to my home theatre syste

im trying to hook up my home theatre system to my pc. does anybody know if the "creative sound blaster digital I/O module cable" (which is an adapter that converts /8" headphone jack to a digital optical cable), is compatible with the Audigy 2zs card? so far i heard its only compatible with the audigy 2 value card..why not the 2zs?
Message Edited by listento3 on 06-27-2006 :6 AM

    listento3,
Are you referring to the Digital I/O module unit's If that's the one, then no, I'm afraid it doesn't work with the Audigy 2 ZS soundcard. If your HT system works with coaxial input, you can use coaxial instead of optical.
