Dual 1.8 G5 Losing Processor Since Leopard
I have a Dual 1.8 G5 (2003) that I recently loaded Leopard on. A few times since I've loaded Leopard I've had the second processor disappear. MenuMeters and Activity Monitor will show the CPU at 0% regardless of load, and when I check the System Profiler it only reports a single CPU. The second processor returns if I reboot the machine, but this is still very strange and rather unnerving behaviour. Another user reported a similar issue in the G5 forum, also tying it to Leopard so that's why I'm reposting here. Is this happening for any other models? Does anybody have a clue what's up?
Hi Rob,
This is a stretch, but try resetting the PRAM:

Dual 1.8 G5 Losing Processor

Hi.
I'm having similar problems with my Dual 1.8. Except mine boots with two CPU's showing...then, anything from 5 to 30 min, the machine freezes or kernel panics.
A force shut down later and back in the OS, only one CPU showing. The Apple tech guys here in Cape Town say its cpu or logic board...I hope it isn't the latter as it has been a year since the last logic board got replaced.
There is not more to say that we are the unlucky few. Although there seem many Dual G5's in the workshop with similar problems here.
I hope for our sakes its just CPU because its cheaper and the faulty one can be deactivated until the cash rolls in. -
What's wrong with networking since Leopard?
Hi,
I'm with Mac since years. I was a PC User once and spent hours with all kinds of network troubles. What convinced me with Mac right in the beginning was easy networking: It just worked!
But since Leopard things got worse: I have several MBP's, iMacs, Airport Extreme's and Airport Express's at different places which I installed, and I face the same problems at EVERY place:
- I can't connect to AExtreme for several reasons: timeout, security incompatibility, ...
- Sometimes only two Macs are allowed to connect to one AExtreme
- Airport doesn't find Aiport or any other networks for minutes
- After connecting to the router, can't get an IP (self-assigned IP only) - other PCs get an IP.
- Aiport Extreme crashes (yellow blinking)
- connection loss (even when AExtreme is very close)
Now I know about networking, about configuration, I've done this for years. Whatever I do, problems disappear and appear again, at different times, at different places with different hardware.
What is wrong with Leopard? Such problems remind me of times with Windows98 and stuff like that. What's wrong with networking since Leopard?
on my network and many i have setup there have been no problems with leopard. However there are always teething problems with new operating systems. Thankfully with leopard only a tiny percentage of users experience technical difficulties.
can't connect to AExtreme for several reasons: timeout, security incompatibility,
is it set to use WPA/WPA2
Airport doesn't find Aiport or any other networks for minutes
sometimes my macbook pro takes a while to show up any networks if there are lots in the area this is because it is scanning them all.
After connecting to the router, can't get an IP (self-assigned IP only) - other PCs get an IP.
What kind of router are you using? What happens if you powercycle the router?
# Aiport Extreme crashes (yellow blinking)
# connection loss (even when AExtreme is very close)
Have you tried resetting your AE to default. reinstalling its firmware or checking for a firmware update?
Have you tried changing hte wireless channel your networ is broadcasting on?
What is wrong with Leopard? Such problems remind me of times with Windows98 and stuff like that.
Did you upgrade install your leopard installation or did you do clean (erase) installations?
Have you tried created new network locations? -

The most common issue seems to be the Internet Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing has got turned On some how.
I have not started gathering info on how people Updated but there were reported issues with doing the Upgrade option as opposed to a Clean Install or Archive and Install with Preserve settings.
Some of this may also effect iChat.
Also If the setting were not preserved any Port Forwarding set in a routing device may not be pointing to the IP the computer has now.
I have seen one error log iChat the iChat 4 forum where the OS and iChat versions did not match

IDvd 06 Keeps crashing since Leopard upgrade
I upgraded my MacBook Pro to leopard back In November, since then, every time I use iDvd 06 It crashes on stage 2, I Installed the 6.0.4 update but still It crashes! It seems this Is quite a common problem since Leopard, Any bright Ideas gratefully received!!
I remember reading that post and I believe the only recommendation was to make sure that the user had the necessary available HD space for working with apps like iDvd. Plus I think the point you made was good in that it would be unlikely these same users have to date filled up their main HD to the point of slowing iDvd. Most these units are but a few months old (if not newer).
Truth is there is no overall solution yet nor a direct answer or solution to this issue (short of software updates in some cases) yet even on these newer models that should run iLife'08 apps flawlessly. iDvd seems to be the major issue while the other apps remain unaffected in the majority of cases.
And like you Fred, I'm starting to suspect the graphics card in a number of these laptops but as of yet I have no direct evidence that this is the case nor if this will resolve most of the issues here. Doesn't hurt to document what has or has not worked to date which I am attempting to do on the following thread even tho it has been marked as solved. The solution posted here may work for some but not all:

Laptops Can't Print Since Leopard
I have 2 Airport Extreme N's in my network. One is a router and the other is a wired bridge. Since Leopard, we are having a lot of trouble keeping connections to our networked printers. If I unplug my 2 airport extremes and plug them back in, I can see and connect to my network printers. However, the next time I want to print I get a message that I should check my printer connections. At this point, if I open Airport Utility and scan, I can see no airports at all, even though the MacBook Pro that I am on is currently connected to the airport and able to get to the internet. So I run around and unplug the airports and then I can delete and re-add my network printers.
I am so sick of running around and unplugging my airports that I want to scream. Has anyone else seen this problem? Are there any solutions out there?Update: I did a lot of reading and found that Appletalk is no more. I got a parallel to USB adaptor and connected the HP laserjet printer that way and it works fine. No more ethernet connection.
On my HP PSC 1350, I discovered since the OS up grade, I could not scan and the printer utility will not function. The only software HP has for this printer for Snow Leopard is PRINT ONLY. I did find software on Apple's site which I believe is for OS 10.7 and that works (sort of), Utility still won't work and the scan function is cumbersome to operate. It is disappointing that Apple and HP cannot be more in concert concerning up grades and keeping the ability to operate existing equipment. My next printer will be a Brother next time I need ink cartridges!! -

I updated my iPhone to iOS 7.0.5 and I lost my messages and camera app and other apps i downloaded from app store. I was having the problem of losing apps since before I updated to the latest IOS. I have tried enable and disable restriction, connecting my phone to my laptop and sync from my computer and none of them is working. What should i do?
Often when this type of thing occurs with missing default apps it is due to a situation where you are unable to 'see' the apps. If you will go to your front display of your device go to settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen layout.
This reset allows for your apps that have for whatever reason been hidden in such an area as you arn't able to find them now to be returned to the area as which they were when you first had the device.
As far as the missing Apps that were purchased through the Apps Store if you will go to settings>itunes and Apps store and click where it reads about automatcally downloading apps clicking on the toggle switch AND clicking on the toggle switch which allows for cellular data to be enabled this then will effectively automatically download all apps to your device that was purchased from the App Store.
Good luck friend. -

Various issues since Leopard upgrade
I have just installed Leopard on a Dual 2.7 G5 with a 500GB Hitachi HDD and 5GB RAM and I have noticed one or two niggling little 'quirks' (I am lumping everything together here, rather than separating them in to more appropriate sections, so that I have a record of everything together).
1) I have an Epson Perfection 4870 scanner which I cannot use to scan directly from applications (for quickness I mainly use Preview) as the 'scan' button is always unavailable (greyed out, not highlighted in blue). This has been an issue since at least 10.4.8, so it's not a problem exclusive to Leopard, but it's extremely annoying nonetheless. As I can scan directly from the Epson Scan software (which is basically the driver) Epson will not assist me further and have directed me to Apple/Adobe/MS, etc., for support. Prior to 10.4.8 (IIRC) I could select 'import' (from whatever application) and it would automatically preview, the scan button would then become available and hitting it would launch the driver software. However, the link between the applications and the driver seems to have been severed somehow/somewhere and it is no longer recognising that the unit has finished its preview in order to make the 'scan' button available for the next part of the process.
In Tiger, I could also scan into Epson's EasyScan application, but have been told this isn't 10.5 compatible.
Does the above make sense...? Has anyone else experienced this - and have you solved it? If so, how?
2) This next bit concerns the Dock. I like to have it hidden along the left hand side of the screen, rather than at the bottom, because I only have a 17" panel and desktop space is at a premium. However, about one restart in five, it's back along the bottom and any icons or folders that I have added to it have gone AWOL.
3) The third issue is a sound issue. I have a Revolution 7.1 card which I understand, from reading a notice on M-Audio's Web site, is not yet Leopard compatible (though the promise it will be "very soon"' though as the last driver release didn't support anything newer than 10.4.6, IIRC, I'm not holding my breath!)
So I have removed the card and plugged my Logitech Z5500s back into the 'on board' card. This was working flawlessly under Tiger (I know because I tested it to make sure, because I knew that the Revolution wouldn't function under Leopard). However, whatever I try, I only seem to hear sound from the internal speaker; I even replaced the optical cable (at great expense - the original was a Belkin Gold Series, and so is the replacement and, at about £35 a pop, it's not a trivial outlay). Everything in the sound sys prefs is completely 'greyed out' so I cannot change it from the internal speaker to anything else. Whilst there is nothing on Logitech's Web site as regards to the Leopard compatibility of any of its products (it seems that it gave up on the Mac a very long time ago; I use a MX510 which was the last of their rodents to have any kind of OS X support and that stopped with 10.4.4, IIRC) I cannot see how a set of speakers, which should work with anything that has the required jack sockets, can be fussy about an OS. Incidentally, I also have a 'dark side' box running XP Home (when I win the lottery, I'll buy a Mac Pro and dispense with it) and they're plugged in there and work fine (via analogue, though, not digital).
I noticed it when I received some CDs that I'd ordered from Amazon the other day and found that iTunes was playing through the internal speaker.
4) The final issue is a networking issue. Under Tiger, I could (though it did take me some tweaking to get it working smoothly) dump things from the G5 on to the Windoze box and vice versa, without too many hiccups. However, Leopard is proving to be somewhat of a challenge, to say the least. I don't know how I managed it, but I did manage to render the machine completely inoperable at one point (it would only boot as far as the grey 'Apple logo' screen and I couldn't open the optical drive to stick the DVD in - a panicked phone call to a friend, who runs his own Mac repair and consultancy business, followed!
I don't understand SMB and AFP (though I do know about FTP). In the Finder, I can see the 'doze box and can send things to it (though should I be connected as 'guest'?) but there is nothing on the Windoze side, save for 'Printers and Faxes'). I have made sure I have permissions set correctly and everything is set up to share (and Windows sharing is on) but there is nothing on the other box at all.
Is it possible to share the main HDD across, or am I limited to this silly 'Drop Box' thing (which I did have available under 'doze at one point, though it was read only and I couldn't change permissions from Leopard because I didn't have sufficient privileges, even though I have an admin account and I could change permissions under Tiger with the same level of 'clearance'.)
4) This final issue is sort of linked with 3) as it concerns what I believe to be erroneous error messages. I was clearing some stuff off a drive I was going to use for Time Machine[1], but I wasn't allowed to delete most of it because 'XYZ was in use' or open in an application. Six reboots later, I was still receiving the same error; strikes me that Leopard's got its knickers in a knot somewhere along the line because the files in question (mainly old Word and Excel docs) were certainly NOT in use as I didn't have either installed at the time!
[1]Though having read the problems people are having with TM (not just here, but on other forums I read/post to) I think I might give it a miss and stick with ChronoSync (just have to wait for it to be compatible).
So, this is actually the second installation, but the problems remain - any help out there?
Sorry for the verboseness of this, but I wanted to make sure that I'd covered everything. I'm almost tempted to reinstall Tigger (but not quite - I like Spaces, and I like the Dock Preview).
Cheers for any assistance, folks!
FranFran, I'm not sure I'm going to be much help for all your problems but I will attempt to answer what I can.
1. Scanner problems - have you tried reinstalling the software? I know you mentioned that the easyscan software is not compatible but it sounds like the driver software isn't in the right place. Optionally another program that you might want to look into is vuescan. I have had good success with the program in the past but I have yet to try it under Leopard.
2. Dock problems this sounds like either a corrupted preference list. But I don't have a clue as to why it might be reoccurring. Have you fixed permissions on your computer since installation?
3. I don't have a clue to figure out how to fix this issue.
4. Networking - As for sending things to the doze box. You don't need to be connected as guest. Just use the username and password that you use when you sign into the windows to sign into the windows box and you should have the same rights as you would as if you were using windows on that computer. Yes it is possible to share the main HDD but it isn't something that I would recommend. What I do recommend is creating a folder where you have both read and write rights to and then use that folder share items across both computers. If this isn't something that is going to work for then at the most I would just share your documents folder. You didn't mention how your trying view information on the windows side you should be able to browse your network and eventually find and see the mac.
4 (part 2) - I would recommend something besides TM, it is designed to recover lost/accidentally deleted files. And isn't really designed for being your complete backup program. Yes, you can use it for that but I would recommend something more robust. Some of that comes down to how you want to define your recovery strategy. Superduper!, promotes themselves as having the ability to boot for your backup drive and being able to almost immediately get back in business. If this is a critical factor to you then I would lean in that direction. If you are just worried about having a backup of critical data files then Chronosync or some other program will work just as well. Also mentioned in your post in this paragraph is a description of "files in use" problems. A couple of things come to mind did you let spotlight finish indexing your drive before you tried deleting files? I've run into a problem similar to this in Tiger when I was deleting files while spotlight was indexing.
One item that you didn't mention was what kind of installation you did when you installed Leopard. If you didn't do an 'erase and install" then that might be something to look into. First back up your computer before doing this. You might also want to run a permissions fix on your drive to see if that helps at all.

(Slow Network): iSight camera not working in iChat since Leopard upgrade
I have a different type of iChat video issue. My Power Mac G4, 867 MHz, 1 GB DRAM is a supported Mac for the Leopard upgrade. I've successfully installed OS 10.5.
Also my Power Mac meets the iChat Conferencing Requirements for 1-on-1 Video Chat per the OS 10.5 system requirements and the application note here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301050
My iSight camera is connected via Firewire to an Apple Cinema Display, which feeds back to the Power Mac G4.
1) When I boot from my 10.3.9 Carbon Copy Cloner backup my iSight works in iChat (at least locally to see myself) without any issue. Green light comes on and shows me locally on video and audio sound bars. Before the OS upgrade the iSight worked fine for live video conferences with iChat 2.1.3 under Mac OS 10.3.9
2) Running OS 10.5 when I go to iChat 4.0's preferences video pane the following message is waiting "This computer does not support video conferencing."
3) With Leopard iChat 4.0 the Connector Doctor under "capabilities" says "(Slow Network)" for 1-on-1 Video Chat and won't even show video locally or turn on the iSight's green light.Fixed!
My Power Mac Quicksilver G4, 867 MHz. problem with (Slow Network) in the iChat Connection Doctor, no video preview or video iChat since upgrading to OS 10.5 Leopard and iChat 4.0 has been solved with the following posted towards the end of the thread below. I can finally see my video preview with iChat 4.0 and have also video chatted successfully with one other user.

Dual monitor set up not working in Leopard
I have just bought a refurbished Power Mac 2.66 dual core and it came with Leopard. I have a 1 LCD and 1 CRT, and have a problem where the CRT will only run at 736x552 if I have both monitors connected. HOWEVER, if disconnect the LCD and just run the CRT, the CRT will give me the option to run in higher resolutions (up to 1280x960). This on an Nvidia 7300 (I think, 7 something) with 256 meg of video ram...
Why is this? I have been running both monitors just fine on my older G5 (which has a lower-end video card).
This was a problem before the 10.5.2 combo update, also before the Video Up date, and still is a problem after installing all updates.
Anyone have this problem? Is it a problem with the video card? I think it's Leopard...
Leopard... I hate you.You have a choice to make.
You can use two video outputs on the video card or the single video output on the motherboard. You cannot use both.
I suggest using the DVD output on the video card and an adapter in the HDMI output on the card. The only problem is that using an old school VGA monitor won't work on the video card outputs since it needs to output to digital display devices. If you want two displays from the video card ,then you will probably need to purchase another LCD display to connect to the video card.
It is probably time to consider putting the old VGA monitor out to pasture. Its time has come and gone.

Buying a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual with a PPC 7450 Processor???
I just purchased but have not received as of yet a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual PCI-X 1 GB 160 GB. In the Details it is stated: "1.8 GHz DP PPC 7450 (G5) x2 RISC Processor."
A friend of mine mentioned that the PPC 7450 is a G4 processor but it might have been used in what is referred to as a G 4.5 PPC. That the true G5 processor should be a 970 fx processor!
Can someone quickly confirm one way or the other. The machine might ship to me tomorrow (Monday) and I will tell them not to ship if I have been misled.
Thanks much for a quick response.
GregorrrIf it's a Power Mac G5, then the description that it's a PPC 7450 is wrong (a G4). G5's are 970.
Since it is hard to mistake a G5 for a G4 Power Mac, and G4's did not have 1.8 GHz processors (unless it has a third party G4 upgrade) or PCI-X, it is likely that you are getting a Power Mac G5.
I've never heard of a "G4.5" description. Apple sold G4 Power Macs up to 1.42 GHz in the curvy plastic case, and then sold G5 Power Macs in the squarish aluminum case. You can't put a "G5" PPC in a G4 Power Mac, and you can't put a "G4" PPC in a G5 Power Mac.
But it wouldn't hurt to contact the seller to verify that it's a Power Mac G5 (huge aluminum case). -
Since Leopard, my G4 has died
I had a good working G4, but since upgrading to Leopard, it's completely ceased up!
I contacted Apple Support who spent quite a while with me trying to sort the problem out but to no avail. He recommended I clean re-install Tiger, which I've done, losing many important emails as I couldn't back up from the old 'Mail' to the new 'Mail'. Also I've lost iwork 2008 as I downloaded it and don't have a hard copy to reinstall after the clean re-install!!!
Now my G4 works from time to time with Tiger but it is VERY unreliable and as I use it for work, I can't rely on it incase it completely crashes again.
Is Leopard designed with Intel Mac Pro in mind? If so, I wish I'd been warned before I destroyed a good working machine. Of course Support don't want to know now as the 30 days support that came with the new Leopard software has expired. A very expensive and frustrating mistake buying Leopard! I should have known better I suppose. If it aint broke, don't fix it...!
Has anyone else had this problem? Also I've lost iwork 2008 as I downloaded it and don't have a hard copy to reinstall after the clean re-install!!!
I can't find a legal version of iLife available for download. As for other sources: [Trojans in illegal versions of Mac software downloaded from torrents|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8892099#8892099]
Now my G4 works from time to time with Tiger but it is VERY unreliable
If you want help on this you will have to be more specific. While it is unlikely in the extreme that Leopard "did" anything to your computer even when it was installed, it would not be there with Tiger which should run fine on just about any G4. For that matter though, you don't tell us anything about your computer model other than G4 which covers a lot of models. Once we know more about the problem we can start making suggestions as to the source. If it is something that is present with both systems loaded then it could be a hardware issue. -
IPod no longer mounts since Leopard upgrade
My iPod no longer mounts since I upgraded to Leopard. I'm using a USB 2 port that's part of a third party PCI card I installed myself. Used to work fine before the Mac OS upgrade.
If I reboot with the iPod already plugged in, it mounts.
Help?Forgot to mention that I had tried those:
Authorize your purchases from an administrator account
-> Yep, I'm the admin
Authorize using the correct account name
-> Nothing changed- I am only authorizing my devices, and only use my account on the machine. Definitely using the right account name.
Turn Off User Account Controls (Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only)
-> Did this a long, long time ago, so definitely not the issue.
Remove the SC Info folder
-> This was the only new thing that I had seen yesterday when I tried it, and went through these steps, to no avail. Still exactly the same problem. I closed iTunes, deleted the folder, rebooted and relaunched iTunes and synced the device. Same thing.
The problem is the computer IS authorized, and I can sync one device, but not the other. No problem with iPhone 4- just iPod Touch, 3rd gen. It seems to be in a weird state.
One thing would lead me to believe it's a PC/iTunes problem, but then it is only with one device and not the other. Hard to point to the root of the problem. I just don't want to lose the data on the iPod- I've done a lot of work on it.
Thanks,
Jeff
