Dual 1.8 GHz G5 only running of one processor

My dad has a Dual 1.8 GHz G5 and had problems in the past, one of the processors went out. He took it to a repair shop and they switched it to run only off one processor. Apparently after they repaired the computer, they didn't tell it to run on both processors. We found out when we went to About this Mac. How do I tell it to run off both processors again?
G5 Dual 2.7 GHz, 15-inch PowerBook 1.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Nap is a power saving feature.
The following processor states are defined:
■ Run: The system is running at maximum processing capacity with the processor running at full speed.
■ Idle: The system is idling; this is the default state. All clocks are running and the system can return to running code within a few nanoseconds. If the system has no work to do, it will be in idle mode.
From idle, the processor will enter deep nap state when the system is power-stepped to half frequency. In this state, the processor’s internal frequency is reduced to 1/64 of the maximum frequency. The processor frequency is returned to normal on exit from idle. The exit from idle takes a bit longer than the regular idle nap but is still in the nanoseconds.

I have the following Apple Computer: Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4, 2 MB per processor. Can I put install new Intel Xeon processors in place of the current ones to bring my Mac up to the MacPro standards and, if so, can I then install the new Mac software (Lion)?

As has been clearly stated, no, no, and no.
If such an upgrade were possible, it probably would be more money than it would be worth.
If you're running a G4 (dual-processor even) you can pick up a used Mac mini (intel that is, and something from 2010 or newer would be the best bet) that will be screaming fast compared to a G4.
Once upon a time, processor upgrades were not only possible, but a good deal, and a relatively inexpensive way to get more life out of your Mac. I upgraded a G3 tower to a G4 for  few hundred dollars, and I was glad I went that route at the time. Finally,  CPU upgrades, at least as far as I know, aren't available anymore.

  • Dual G5 2 GHz, random freezing for about one year now...

    Hi Everybody
I own a Dual G5 2 GHz for about three years now. I used to work perfectly until about one year ago.
Then, presumably, an external FireWire harddisk blew the Logic Board. I had to have it replaced for a lot of money (because the G5 was out of warranty already). Since that point in time, the machine randomly freezes from time to time. And it is getting worse.
I tried a lot already, I think: RAM, USB peripherials (Mouse, Keyboard), removed all external things (but wireless, mouse, keyboard and screen), different screen, different keyboard... I had it turned in to different apple repair-centres twice and got it back with "no problem found" (although it froze in one case as well!).
Apple Hardware-Test runs fine. It gave an error that pointed to the Logic-Board or processor (according to Apple customer care) once, but this is not reproducible...
I am at a loss. What else can I do? By the way: the most "promising" thing to create the freeze (although there is no "definitive" way to do so) is to browse iTunes-Shop/Podcasts.
I would be very grateful for any hint/option. Thinking about Firmware update right now, but first have to check what verison I already have to see if there is a newer one.
    Regards
    andreas
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

Mozilla recently released Firefox 2.0, you may want
    to give that a try.
I was thinking about that too. I might do this, if no crashes occur as long as I only use Safari (I can live with that for a week, np).
It's possible that there may be something else
running in the background (another application that
you installed perhaps) that could be causing the lock
up. Take a look at Activity Monitor
    (/Applications/Utilities)
I'll have a look, but I don't think (hope?) there is something I missed...
Something else to look at would be to do a fresh
install (even if it's using an external FW drive),
reinstall your software 1 by 1 and see if it casuses
your machine to freeze. It's time consuming, but may
help in narrowing down what is the cause (if in fact
    it is software related).
Two points here: first is that I cannot reinstall one by one because the error is not (yet) reprocucible. So I would never know when one app is "secure" and when to install the next one...
And second, I think that software should no be able to freeze a system like OS X (or FreeBSD) just like that, no? Maybe crash the app, but not the system...
Also, are you running any Classic applications?
    Nope.
If you don't already have the newest version of
Firefox installed, try that first and see what
    happens.
I have And I had a lot of different versions throughout the last year
Thanks for your input, Ben, I appreciate it!

  • IBM Hard Drive Only Runs In One Computer

    Hey guys,
I have a weird little problem with an IBM Travelstar hard drive.  I am working on a Dell Latitude 400 for a friend.  She wanted XP installed on her laptop, as it currently has some version of Fedora on it, and she dislikes Linux.  However, her computer does not have a disc drive, floppy drive, or support for USB boot.  So, I went on to Ebay, and bought a 2.5 to 3.5 IDE hard drive adapter, and went through the process of installing MS-DOS 7.1 to a spare drive, and using that to install XP.  Sure enough, using my spare drive, everything worked smoothly.  However, when I tried the same thing with her hard drive, none of my computers can find it.  My Gateway 2000 cannot detect it, my A31 Thinkpad cannot  detect it, and so on and so forth.  Of course, when her hard drive is in her Dell, it runs fine.
I am wondering if maybe the hard drive is somehow 'locked in' to her computer...as I have experienced a similar problem with another hard drive that would only run in an I 1200 Thinkpad.  The model number off the drive in question is IC25N010ATDA04-0.  It has a manufacturing date of April 02. If anybody has any ideas, I would really like to hear them.
    Thanks in advance,
    - Nycto

Right, Windows cannot handle ext3.  I am aware of this.  I tried reformating the disc with one of my Kubuntu discs, and Kubuntu could not detect the hard drive.  I couldn't detect the drive with Max Blast either.  I have yet to try every computer in my house, but, thus far, regardless of operating system, the only computer that will can detect the drive is the Dell from which I pulled it.  When I boot my Gateway 2000 with the laptop drive attached, the bios only recognizes the two CD-ROM drives and my primary hard drive.  Even when the laptop drive is the only drive in the system, it fails to detect the drive.  So I couldn't tell you if I could view the drive in Windows' Device Manager, as I can't even get Windows to boot with this drive connected.  And, like I said, Kubuntu  couldn't find the drive either.
I know my converters work, as I was able to successfully install Windows using the previously described method with an old Hitachi notebook drive I had lying around.  Additionally, as I mentioned before, I have seen this once before with another IBM Travelstar...except that drive was only detected by an IBM Thinkpad 1200.  Which is why I wondered if there was something built into the hard drive's firmware that locked it in to a particular computer or something.  I've tried most of the obvious stuff...jumper settings, loose cables, etc, and yet I don't have any other computers that can detect the drive.
I'm tempted to solve my Windows XP installation by installing VMWare, or something similar, to the Dell, and then copying over an ISO of XP, and mounting it in a virtual drive and installing it that way...but this machine is so old, I doubt it's a good idea to run XP on top of Linux...

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz freezes any time, boots sometimes with one processor

Since two weeks I experience freezes at different up-and-runnng time. It could happen at grey startup screen (after a while fan goes wild), could be after some minutes working in a full booted user environment.
I run AHT several times, no error reported. When I took out all RAM except for Apple RAM, it still freezes at some time.
Now, by random, my machine starts sometime with only one processor and is stable for hours (only the fan runs higher and cpu load is most of the time near 100 percent). Activity shows one bar only, System Info says: Number of CPUs=1. I have no idea which processor runs and which "sleeps" deadly. iStat tells only about CPU A as having a temperature, the fans of CPU A run higher, but the fans of CPU B run also on a lower level.
The "U3 Heatsink" reads 65-70 degree Celsius. Is that (too) high?
Only once I got a kernel panic during verbose startup. It read:
"System failure: cpu=1; code =00000001 (corrupt stack)
    unalined fram address: 0x00000001"
I am tempted to shut down one CPU with Open Firmware command, but will it be the defect one? At least the machine is doing something regular then, but is slow...
    Any help is much welcome!
    Yours, Whoopy

My PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 also has this problem.
It all started one sad afternoon a month or so ago. I noticed that my computer was on and the fans were on full speed. As soon as I moved the mouse to shut it down, I got the wheel of death!
I had no choice but to do a force shutdown.
The next day, I turn my computer on and it just stayed on the gray screen with the dark gray apple, and no spinning thingy.
So once again, I had to force shutdown.
Pressing the 'Option' key did gave me the screen where one can select where to boot from; the main HD, booting CD, etc. but none of the worked.
When I chose to boot from my internal HD or from the restore CD it would just get stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo.
I pressed the PMU button = no change
I did a PRAM reset = it brought my G5 to life but then a few minutes later it froze and history repeated itself.
Did a PRAM reset again and this time didn't work.
Tried booting from my PowerBook G4 HD via firewire = frozen gray screen
When I pressed the 'T', i get the FireWire logo and I'm able to boot my G5's HD using my PowerBook G4. But when I put my G4 on firewire mode and try to boot my G5 by selecting the OS of the G4, I still get the frozen screen, so the problem is not with the HD.
One time I was able to boot my G5 from the 'Restoration CD' and I used the Utilities to Fix permisions, and repair the HD but still the computer would freeze and same old story.
Since I got this problem, It has work normal only 3 occasions but no longer than an hour until the fans go crazy and freezes.
I tried different memory sticks and no improvement.
My AppleCare expired on May, and my G5 went down 2 or 3 months after that.
This feels part of an strategy called "Get a(nother) Mac". Where comps are design to last just a little after AppleCare expires and then BOOM! no choice but to spend some serious cash on fixing it or use that money plus more to get one of the resent mac which have had some changes since one bought the mac that just went to apple heaven.
Anyways, I feel that the problem will be solved by replacing the two processors, heatsinks, or whatever they called it.
I took apart my G5 today and I'm not sure but it seems that the heatsinks might use some kind of gas to cools the CPUs or Chips and I think that gas is over.
Has anyone swap the heatsink units and noticed any difference?

  • Will Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 run Leopard?

I just bought a MacBook Pro and purchased Leopard (had to get the install disks since I bought the Macbook prior to Leopard release). I also have a 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 and need to know if I can load and run Leopard on it? It currently has OS 10.3.9 and would like to get it up to speed and in sync with my MacBook if possible . . . but am still confused about everything I see on in discussions as to whether or not this is possible. Help!
    Robin

The G4 can readily run Leopard. Here's the requirements:
    *Leopard Technical Requirements*

However, the license that came with your Leopard install DVD limits you to one Mac, unless you bought the family pack.

  • WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY DUAL 1.8 GHZ POWERPC G5 RUNNING MAC 0S X 10.4.11?

I am unable to update my firmware any further. what can i do to continue using this machine?

    Hello,
    As far as Internet goes...
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid version 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
    http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/downloads/list
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

    http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/
The last version with Mac OS 10.4 and PPC support was SeaMonkey 2.0.14.
    The last version seamonkey-for-ppc - 2.26 RELEASE - Mac OS X 10.5.x - PPC.

  • Why does my iChat video only run at one frame per second?

When I connect to anyone on iChat my video runs at only about one frame per second. When others connect to me their video is much faster. This hasn't been a problem in the past - even with other Internet apps running when I'm using iChat. Could this be a problem with my ISP? Is there something I should do?

    Hi Gary45,
In AIM 5.9 the PC can set the Video quality rate.
    Start a chat.
The PC end clicks on the rear tab of the Video chat.
This brings their own preview to the front.
To the right there is anow a small iCon.
    Click on this.
    This brings up a slider.
Slide the slider to the Left.
If this is done to an iChat Buddy and they have the Connection Doctor open from the Video menu, they will see the Bit rate and Framerate go up. The consequence is that as the video Quality goes down the data that makes up the pic goes down allowing for better refresh rates and a smoother video.

  • How do I set a Phase Listener to only run for a specific page?

How do I set a Phase Listener to only run for a specific page?
I understand that a Phase Listener runs for ever page in the application, however I want a phase listener to only run for one page at the beginning of the application.
I discovered I can't use a Filter, because the JSF Application instance always returns null.
Thus, I thought a Phase Listener would be a good approach.
    Thoughts?

  • Dual G5 Showing One Processor

For those interested, I noticed my Dual G5 2.5 was showing only one processor in the system profiler as well as the activity monitor. Searching for other threads this problem had been mentioned before without a solution.
I first contacted applecare which eventually directed me to my local apple store. The problem was determined to be a faulty logic board (despite passing the apple hardware test with the included OS X DVD). The logic board and the dual processors were both replaced by the apple store under applecare with resolution of the problem (Two processors now showing up under system profiler and activity monitor). By the way, the fans are much quieter and less active. I clearly was previously running under one processor. I do note a significant step up in speed since the change.
I hope this helps anyone else with similar issues.

Nice of you to post this. Sometimes, people spend a lot of time trying to "fix" their system when there is really an underlying hardware problem. The trouble with Macs is that you can't really deal with hardware issues yourself like you can with a peecee. Also, your post points out the questionable value of the hardware test disk. I have had the same experience a number of times where the hardware test will show no issues but it turns out that there is a bad proc or MLB or video card or RAM or whatever. Sometimes a trip to the repair shop is the only good option.

  • IE8 + Flash 10.0.32.18:  2 User Accounts but Flash only plays in one

This problem is actually not browser unique, as I can't get flash to work with IE8, Firefox, or Chrome in one account.
I've been trying to sort this problem out for awhile, but can't seem to crack it.  Windows XP (home) sp3, Eset NOD32 AV, Comodo Firewall, WinPatrol, etc.
I thought there was a problem with the installation of the Flash player, so downloaded the uninstall utility, ran it, rebooted, checked the registry and deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\DistributionUnits\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} folder, (according to instructions here ), installed the latest version of Adobe Flash from the downloaded standalone installation files.  Installation flash video indicated a successful installation.  Went to C:Windows/system32/macromedia/Flash/ and updated the .exe file to the latest available...
The site I am trying to view flash content on is here (http://kadampafestivals.org/diaries/2009/summer/day-1-a-meaningful-holiday)
I have two user accounts on this system, both currently have administrative rights. One is a bit sleeker, as I use it only for admin tasks.  On it the flash content will play.  On the other account, no amount of fiddling with security settings, active x, java settings, and so forth seems to enable the flash content to play.  When I navigate to the site, I get a blank space on the page where the flash content should play, or if I choose play videos a pop up white screen with no content.  If I right click on the window, the adobe flash menu appears, but settings are not active or accessible, and don't seem to work as they normally would.
I've read through all the installation notes about Flash on the Adobe site, have attempted various lower security settings in the browser, no luck...tryed resetting IE8 to default settings, reinstalled Flash.  The System is scanning free of any malware with Eset, Mbam, SAS, Defender.
I've tried disabling the comodo firewall and using only Windows firewall, no effect.
If anyone out there can indicate a direction that would help me to sort this out I'd sure appreciate the input...Many thanks in advance.
(I'd be happy to attach a log file of the installation if anyone knows how to decipher it...seems like the C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\nsn83E.tmp\NSISArray.dll file was skipped a lot) - but then Flash works fine in the other user account....

Found the last piece of the puzzle, it was a registry key in the HKEY Current User. Once I deleted it for Shockwave Player my issues went away where the Flash would only run for one user unless it was reinstalled on every user. Uninstall Shockwave Player, its object and delete the following key from every HKEY Current User and Flash will work again. Look at all of the settings for the Current User:

  • Cpuinfo showing only one processor

Hey guys, I just got a new motherboard( cheapass Biostar P4M80-M4) and I'm having problems getting SMP working/figuring out if its working. Doing a `cat /proc/cpuinfo` shows that I only have a processor 0. I am absolutely sure that this processor supports hyperthreading. Hyperthreading is enabled in BIOS and POST confirms this by saying that an HT processor is detected and HT is enabled. The noapic kernel flag is not being set. Booting into DSL shows that I have 2 processes. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.

oh yeah i forgot to mention that I'm running stock kernel 2.6.21.
    $ dmesg | grep -i processor
    Intel MultiProcessor Specification v1.4
    Processor #0 15:3 APIC version 17
    Processors: 1
    Detected 3089.608 MHz processor.
Checking if this processor honours the WP bit even in supervisor mode... Ok.
    CPU: Physical Processor ID: 0
Total of 1 processors activated (6186.46 BogoMIPS).
so it is only bringing up one processor?

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz running 10.5.8 cannot burn DVD+R

    Hello all-
I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz running 10.5.8 and I cannot burn DVD+R. Does that make sense?
If I insert a DVD+R into the drive, it just spits it back out. I've tried several discs so it's not a faulty DVD.
    Help.
    Thank you.

I've tried several discs so it's not a faulty DVD
I trust that is several different brands, not several different discs from the same spindle/pack?
    Media varies.

If you haven't tried a different brand, try a Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
You might also try burning in a new user account to rule out account software troubles.

  • Can Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 run on MAC OS X TowerVersion 10.5.8Processor: Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5Memory: 6 GB

    My questions is simply...
Can Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 run on MAC OS X TowerVersion 10.5.8Processor: Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5Memory: 6 GB??
and how do I found out if it is intel based?
I am trying to sell my mac and there are people asking me very complex questions.

A G5 is a PPC processor, NOT Intel.
Final Cut Pro 5 will run on a Power Mac G5.
Yes, your tower will run it.

  • HP 4510S laptop. has dual core processor but is only running one half of it.

This system is running on Win 7 32bit.  If I upgraded to W7-64 bit would the system then use both halves of the processor?

I use BELARC advisor which lists all hardware, SW on my system.  It also tells me what processors I have, memory, etc.  It will also tell me if I have a dual or single core processor and whether it is running both cores or only one.  My gateway NV50 is running Win 7-64 bit and BELARC tells me how it is working on both cores.  But my wifes LT which is an HP has win 7-32 bit for an OS and Belarc advises that it is only running one core.  That is why I asked the question.  I am upgrading the HD from 250 to 750 gb and maxing out her memory.  Maybe then she will quit complaining about how slow it works.
