Dual 1.8 PPC G5 limits?

My workhorse dual 1.8 is humming along just fine, but I would like to install larger HDs.
I'm thinking about two WD SATA green 1TB HDs. Will this G5 recognize it?
I also have an OS9 audio editing program that does a few things I haven't found in a free OSX program. This G5 came with 10.3 and now runs 10.5. Will this G5 running 10.5 support OS9? Or do I need to keep my G4 on 10.4 for OS9?
Tracy

I also have an OS9 audio editing program that does a few things I haven't found in a free OSX program.
Have you tried Audacity?
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Will this G5 running 10.5 support OS9?
Only if you have 10.4 on a separate partition, or separate bootable hard drive.
And even then, it will only operate as Classic. It won't operate as a bootable version of Mac OS 9. This has limits on printer drivers and other hardware drivers. If your G4 can boot into Mac OS 9 from Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk, that's your best bet for Mac OS 9 compatibility. If yours can't do that, see my FAQs*:

  • Buying a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual with a PPC 7450 Processor???

I just purchased but have not received as of yet a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual PCI-X 1 GB 160 GB. In the Details it is stated: "1.8 GHz DP PPC 7450 (G5) x2 RISC Processor."
A friend of mine mentioned that the PPC 7450 is a G4 processor but it might have been used in what is referred to as a G 4.5 PPC. That the true G5 processor should be a 970 fx processor!
Can someone quickly confirm one way or the other. The machine might ship to me tomorrow (Monday) and I will tell them not to ship if I have been misled.
Thanks much for a quick response.
    Gregorrr

    If it's a Power Mac G5, then the description that it's a PPC 7450 is wrong (a G4). G5's are 970.
Since it is hard to mistake a G5 for a G4 Power Mac, and G4's did not have 1.8 GHz processors (unless it has a third party G4 upgrade) or PCI-X, it is likely that you are getting a Power Mac G5.
I've never heard of a "G4.5" description. Apple sold G4 Power Macs up to 1.42 GHz in the curvy plastic case, and then sold G5 Power Macs in the squarish aluminum case. You can't put a "G5" PPC in a G4 Power Mac, and you can't put a "G4" PPC in a G5 Power Mac.
But it wouldn't hurt to contact the seller to verify that it's a Power Mac G5 (huge aluminum case).

  • Anyone having good luck with a G5 Dual 2.5 PPC?

I've been a Mac user for quite a long time going back to my SE30 and I can say that only one time before have I ever had this much trouble; (The first version of OSX).
I have performed every version of the install and the end result is always the same. I'm having severe issues with the Finder crashing and restarting itself. None of the Apple apps work without constantly crashing and me restarting them several times. FYI, I did download the combo 10.5.2 update and apply it myself and I have repaired permissions all along the way. I've even installed each update one at a time just to see if my issues were related to any particular update and it wasn't. I have since gone back to Tiger and my machine runs GREAT! I would really like to upgrade to Leopard without having to purchase a new computer.

Apparently you didn't read my FAQ. RAM can go bad ANYTIME.
RAM errors can not be detected even given the age of the universe in testing time.
If they happen, then you know it is bad. It only takes one sequence of bad registers which you can't test for given the age of the universe to trip up RAM.
And it doesn't necessarily happen on every machine.
I'm really starting to believe that there is an issue with the Dual 2.5 G5/PPC and Leopard that hasn't been addressed yet.
If there were such issues, they would have appeared in testing the computer itself. Apple said all G5s and all G4s of 867 Mhz or faster are supported.
Issues that they can't address are third party issues, as those would also take longer than the age of the universe to test every combination of possible factors.
The fact you had this on an erase and install suggests something is wrong with the hardware of your machine that was undetectable under normal tests.
Only replacing the hardware of the machine (the RAM being the easiest to do since all of it is under lifetime warranty from most manufacturers, and you can get identical spec from numerous manufacturers) will you eliminate the potential problems you are seeing. And those problems you have witnessed are identical to those seen by people who have had issues with RAM.

  • Dual 2.7GHz PPC G5 - Fan Problem

    Hello,
I have an Early 2005 Dual 2.7 GHZ PPC G5 running 10.5.8. Recently, my fans have started operating at a high speed. This now happens every single time I boot and it happens immediately after pressing the start button (before the OS loads). Because of this, I would guess this is a hardware problem. I have done everything I know to do and nothing has fixed this problem. My system temperatures appear to be normal but the fan noise is annoying. Here is what I have tried:
    Zapped PRAM
    Replaced PRAM Battery
    Reset NVRAM
Reset the PMU Button on the Motherboard
    Trashed Energy Saver Preferences
Ran the Extended Apple Hardware Test - no problems found. (Interestingly, the fans did NOT run at high speed when I booted from this disc).
The system even passed the Apple Service Diagnostic 2.5.8 with no issues.
I didn't see any evidence of a coolant leak but I did not dismantle that system to inspect the processors/board under it.
The plastic air deflector shield is in place and the sensor appears to be working because the red light illuminates on the board when I remove the shield.
I have not tried Thermal Calibration because I have read about a possible bug with that process (ASD 2.5.8). Not sure if that process is safe or not.
I have not modified the boards or processors (or anything) to warrant Thermal Calibration so I'm not really sure if it is needed.
I don't know what else to try - except to take the machine to the Apple Store.
Does anyone have any more troubleshooting ideas?
    Thanks!
    Chris Ratchford
    Columbus, OH

    Hi Chris,
I think Thermal Calibration is the only thing that would help, but I doubt any Apple Store still works on G5s... no idea on the concern about the bug bricking it, have not personally seen it, but have seen many successes.

Hi.. I’m fed up with all the hype about the new imac core duo being twice as fast as the imac g5 2.1ghz. A lot of the magazines are also saying yes the core duo beats the g5 at this, that, and the next thing. What I’d like to know is how would the core duo have compared in performance had Apple had put a dual core 2.0ghz g5 in the imac like it done with the power mac range.
    Just a thought
    Cheers
    Gerry

I'm curious about this too. In addition to what Gerald says, I note that there's also no mention anywhere of how the new dual core Intel processors perform as compared with, say, the Pentium 4 or whatever number they are at now.
As for the heat business, I see in MacFormat this month that IBM have announced a 4ghz - 5ghz powerpc chip. Apparently they have even tested one running at 6ghz, that they now plan to go in servers. So the PowerPC chip doesn't seem to be dying out now.
I am going to have to upgrade my 6500/300 sometime in the near future and as the Intel chips are going to force me to lose all my Classic software anyway, it seems sensible to work out what all the options are, if you get my gist.

  • Performance boost question for G5 Dual 2.3 PPC

I have a late '05 PPC G5 that has been giving me fits so I bought a Jupiter 1TB 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache drive from OWC (to replace the oem 250 gb HD) along with 4-2 GB ram modules to replace the 8-512 MB modules that came with the computer. I have been unable to run Drive Genius to Verify, Rebuild or Defrag the oem 250 GB HD and Disk Warrior also failed to operate. OWC techs suspected bad ram... so I first installed the new 8GB ram modules and did a clean install of the original OS, Tiger, as my wide format Epson is not supported by Apple's later operating systems.
The old drive now appears to be perfect and both Drive Genius and Disk Warrior work... so bad ram must have been the issue.
With the old dive wiped clean and the new 1 TB drive to install, is there any point in keeping the oem 250 GB drive for scratch or anything else? It didn't get used much and I'm wondering if the old drive can be used to somehow boost the overall performance of the system?
Finally, since I use this computer for Aperture and Photoshop only, is there any point in installing the full 16 gb ram this G5 will accept or is this overkill for running Photoshop CS3 and Aperture 2?
    Thanks for any advice!

    Great news Lawrence, thanks!
I'll be working on files as large as 750 MB
Strange as it seems that'll likely require 4 times the RAM or VM for that, so 3GB just to edit that file!
wondering if there is any advantage to partitioning the 1TB hard drive and allocating a certain portion to scratch disk?
Not really, OSX is a strange beast, the more free disk space it has the better/smoother it runs... actually with one TB you might get away with Partitioning without slowing OSX, but you'd really gain nothing at all
Perhaps a Second really fast Drive like a WD Caviar Black in the other slot might help.
Can the HD be partitioned once Tiger has been installed (and before I install any software) or should this have been done before installing the OS?
Any Partitioning should be done first, & though I wouldn't bother doing it, it can be done after the fact...

  • Dual 1 GHz PPC G4 won't sleep

Over the past week, my G4 has stopped going to sleep both by the timer, from the Apple menu and when I'm logged out. When the timer's selected, it just doesn't do anything. When I try to sleep it from the Apple menu, I get the spinning color wheel and have to restart with the power button. Trying it in log out mode doesn't do anything except make it so I can't log in again and have to restart with the power button.
My ability to fix computer problems goes about as far as /sbin/fsck -fy, but that hasn't helped. I tried checking out this, but couldn't find anything that seemed to work: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
    Any ideas?

Hey, fellas, thanks for responding. I do want to clarify that I told you wrong when I said I was getting the color wheel when trying to sleep the machine from the Apple menu. Rather, the monitor goes black, but the computer is obviously still running--when I press the volume change buttons on the keyboard, I can hear it clicking.
    No recent hardware/software changes.
I tried resetting the PMU to no avail.
I ran the hardware test CD and got an error code "fire/3/20" on the logic board. I looked it up and found this thread suggesting I reset my PRAM and NVRAM, which I did. Ran the hardware test CD again and got the same error. Is my logic board effed? Should I be backing up all my files right now?
How would I check the battery voltage?

  • G5 Dual 2.3 PPC Startup problems

    Hi
About every other time I start up the computer, nothing comes on the display, and within 1-2 minutes the fans start to accelerate out of control. I then push and hold the start button to abort the startup.
After 10 seconds I startup again, and then it starts up right.
What could be the problem? I am afraid that someday it won't start up at all, which is a big problem since I am running a recording studio, and need to have stable gear.

  • 3 flashing lights after installing newest OSX on old Dual 1.8 PPC G5

    Hi all,
My computer was working fine up until I installed OSX Leopard. Not long after installing it my computer froze while using Safari. I then got the 3 flashing lights. I've since had all 4GB RAM replaced through RamJet on a lifetime warranty. I got the same problems with the new RAM. I know it's probably the logic board at this point but I'm just wondering if any of you who had the same problem after installing Leopard before getting 3 flashing lights.

    Anybody?

  • Logic 9 on a PPC dual 2.7 running Tiger OSX 10.4.11 am I crazy ?

I am a Logic pro 8 user on a Dual 2.7 PPC G5 8 GB ram under Tiger OSX 10.4.11. Plenty of hard drives including 10,000 rpm media drive. My Logic 8 experience is wonderful and professional (most of the time) on this finely tuned system. Of course I want the new features of Logic 9 to be available and working on my current system. Should I buy it and expect to be up and running, got a film project in the near future but I want to take the plunge asap for the learning curve and tweaking. Any feedback greatly appreciated. Cheers !

should I buy it and expect to be up and running, got a film project in the near future
I'd suggest you set it up on another drive with its own OS (you'll need 10.5.7+), and use it as a test bed only. I wouldn't take the risk with a new project coming.
For me, it's not usable yet - LP9 won't run some LP8 projects. Before I move to LP9, I'll wait for an update with (hopefully) fixes.

  • Dual 2.3 G5 PPC won't connect to airport express...

This one is boggling my mind. I'm a pretty technically savvy guy but I have ran out of options and ideas. I had a very unstable "dlink router" based network consisting of my G5 Dual 2.3 PPC Tower, a Powerbook G4 1.33, New Dell Laptop (work pc) and 3 Roku "Netflix" streaming devices. While my old Dlink router-based network performed ok most of the time I got sick of my Powerbook, G5 Tower and work laptop dropping the wifi connection and me going through the process of reconnecting several times a day.
About a week ago one of my buddies gave me a Airport Express. I connected the unit to my cable modem and using the Airport Utility on my Powerbook setup a new network with the same name and "wpa" settings of my old network. Basically I just took my old Dlink router out of the mix and replaced it with the Airport Express.
Now everything works fine (Roku boxes included) except for my G5 tower. I've tried setting up new location(s), deleting syscfg prefs, deleting/rebuilding network devices, changing network names, different wpa/wep security settings -- but nothing works. The G5 tower sees my network's ssid and after a couple tries joins successfully but is stuck with a "self assigned IP" no matter what I do or however man times I reboot. Also the airport utility on the G5 tower will not detect my Airport Express eventhough I have no problem seeing and configuring it on my Powerbook or using the windows verison on my work Dell laptop. I even tried moving the Airport Express closer to the G5 and this doesn't work either.
Both my Powerbook and G5 tower are running Leopard and I had no problem getting on the internet with the my G5 using my Dlink router before. Please help!!!
    Joe

Fixed it myself by changing the security setting on the Airport Express from WPA2 to WPA/WPA2. Now the G5 tower can connect, get an IP, and see the Airport Express using the Airport Utility. The funniest part of this is that I believe I tried that already before posting my question :-/

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up, Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up

    Hello
I inherited a Dual 2.5 PPC Power Mac G5 from my sister. She was having problems with it suddenly freezing up. She replaced the hard drive but that didn't fix it, and sicne she had a newer Macbook Pro she gave up on it. When I got it I replaced the video card on it with an ATI Radeon, and it seemed to run fine for a while, and then the problem returned. It seemed to have returned after I did all the Apple software upgrades on it (It's running Leopard), but that might be a coincidence. I noticed under Diagnostics on the power up test that some RAM had failed. I also noticed that it was running on 1 gb of RAM even though 2 gb were installed. I removed the faulty Ram (4 256 mb dimms) and hoped that that was the problem. Unfortunately it wasn't. I also installed a temperture reading program. It showed that CPU A is running around 80 C at times and is usually about 10C hotter than CPU B. I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time and date, and took a look at the battery, and sure enough it was starting to leak (but hadn't leaked on to any components). I've ordered a new bttery for it.
I ran a check with Disk Utility and found the HD was ok, but permissions were a bit messed up. Disk Utility wasn't able to fix some of the permissions, but i don't think this is the underlying problem.
I've also opened it and gave everything a thourough vacuuming and cleaning and reseated any removable parts. I took the cover off the liquid cooling unit and vacuumed out the dust. There didn;t seem to be any coolant leaks I could see.
Any suggestions on where I should go from here? I unfortuantely don't have any of the disks for it, so I can't run the AHT until I find one for it (the one for my Macbook Pro wouldn't work).
Sometimes it just freezes. Other times it freezes and the computer fans go on high. It will finally get to a point where it shows the grey multi-language restart screen (where it says to hold down the button to shut it off and the restart).
It was frustrating because on my workbench it was running fine after I switched the video card, and it didn't freeze at all. When I moved it to our computer desk though, the problems returned. Tonight it was to the point where it didn't last 5 minutes.
    My thoughts are:
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad
    2. Maybe the dead battery is messing it up?
    3. When it is heating up with use, something is expanding and not connecting any longer.
    What are your thoughts?

    Hi Curtis,
I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time
Nope, not normal, way too hot, above 70°C... If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
Have you blown the dust out of everything with high pressure air?\
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad

  • Can anyone tell me why Logic runs faster on an iMac G5 than my G5 2.7 PPC?

I am missing something. On my desktop tower Dual 2.7 PPC on which I run Logic Pro 7 and other programs like Protools 7.1, I noticed that Logic 8 runs slower than Logic 7 - graphic redraws are sluggish.
However, I just came back from a friend's and saw Logic 8 running on an iMac G5 - with a single processor to boot (can't remember exact clock speed but under 2G) and redraws are quicker and I didn't get the "Disk Too Slow" message when playing the demo content.
How can this imac run Logic better than the better spec'd machined?
    Has anyone else seen this?
Some installation must be hampering Logic 8 performance on my 2.7G mac but I can't think of what. Maybe one of the Pro Application updates? Or maybe I need to install the Pro Application updates?
    Any help is appreciated.

it is not a 'port' steve, it is as native on ppc as it is intel...and i think the OT was talking about an older imac that was still ppc.
ken, i would say that the problems you are encountering may very well be a pro app update. but it also depends on the project as well. i have been finding some projects behave very sluggishly and others, even more densely programmed ones are quite smooth. also i find the 'sticky' slower projects to be a bit crashier. but the thing is, i don't think it makes any difference between songs made in 8 or made in 7. i would have thought that the 7 songs might cause problems but there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason between what songs are going to behave oddly and those that don't.
also there are many factors that can affect GUI speed. someone was saying that if you have lots of icons and folders open on your desktop it can have an affect on your GUI.
but for what it's worth ken, i have 2.7 ppc as well and for the most part the GUI speed is ok (if not actually electrifying).

  • How to get more power/capacity from my G5 2GHz DP, PPC?I own a fully max'd

I have a max'd out G5 Dual 2 GHz PPC w/2GB DDR SDRAM. Have 2 hard drives but are also max'd out - now effecting performance speed. I use the mac 99% for editing Video and Audio. Movies and files are stored on external HDs. If I am reading my specs right, I have 8 slots, of which 4 are incorporating 512MB RAM sticks - does this meran I can add more RAM? For some reason I thought 2 GB was max??? If this is a "can-do" - will this increase my speed-power? Keeping in mind I'm at near total capacity on the HDs (using HD2 as start up drive, because HD1 has less space on it)can I add a third internal HD and make that one larger and designate it as the start up drive? Upgrading to OS 10.5 won't help it right? Thanks for helping me out, still getting the "bugs out" but I always seem to want more, more, more....(Geez, I sound like Billy Idol huh?) Thank you for your kind responses in advance.

I think you are on the right track. I would add 2 gig
of ram from either Crucial, or OWC. I would replace
one of your 250 gig drives with a 500 gig, they can
be had for about $150 now. You don't really have any
option to upgrade your video card right now...the
only one better than your 9800 is an X800 and they're
not available without paying an extreme price. For
whatever reason ATI isn't making them and no one
knows if they will in the future. I understand that
the nVidia 6800 is a great card but they're hard to
find and also expensive. I would stay away from
    inexpensive flashed PC cards.
On a maintenance note, have a backup strategy.
Download and run a utility like Onyx or Cocktail on a
regular basis. I'm hearing good things about
AppleJack...I think I'm going to give it a try but at
this time I don't know anything about it and I use
Onyx. Repair your permissions regularly and for sure
after any upgrade or install. DiskWarrior is my one
    can't be without utility.
I'm sure there are going to many other good
suggestions, there are several knowledgeable people
here and all are willing to help a fellow mac user. I
do believe that you're doing the right things to
extend the useful life of your G5 until you someday
buy a Mac Pro if that's your plan....I know that's
    mine!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH - I FEEL ENCOURAGED NOW. WILL TRY THE ADD-ON'S AND UPGRADE THE HD & REPORT MY FINDINGS TO THE FORUM. I BET THIS IS GOING TO "FIX IT UP" UNTIL I GET MY HANDS ON A NEWER, FASTER, BIGGER, & BETTER (WHICH DAY IS IT?) MAC. THANK YOU - I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!

  • Help with migrating from PPC G5 to MacBook Pro 2012

I haven't even booted up my new MacBook Pro, because a lot of postings in Discussions and elsewhere warn me of problems if I try to use Migration Assistant to bring my user data and files across from a PPC Mac to a new MacBook Pro running Lion.
BORING DETAILS:  I'm jumping from a dual G5 Dual Power Mac (PPC, running Leopard 10.5.8) over to a 2012 MacBook Pro, (a 15" fast i7 quad non-retina, with 1 GB GPU and 16 GB RAM, running latest Lion). I have a lot of data and apps, including "pro apps" like Final Cut and lots of photo- and video-production software.
I know that I'll need to reinstall all my apps from scratch, even Universals, especially all my Pro apps. But, I have read some positive guidance about possibly using Migration Assistant to move only my User identity and related files across to the MBP. Then, reinstalling / upgrading apps. And, afterwards, using Firewire (target mode) to move various data folders and docs.
I'm confused. I like the idea of moving myself as User/admin across, relatively intact -- IF that's a good idea -- then reinstalling apps. Then, moving various files (docs andand data) across. Hopefully, this route wind up with minimal or zero PERMISSIONS  problems. Guidance or links, pretty please...?
I've read the great postings from Kappy and some others, in Discussions, but most don't address the issue of moving User identity and data from the PPC Mac over to the Intel. Maybe it's a "big" issue only in my mind?

Joshua Coventry and sig and others:
    Thanks!
If you combine those last two pieces of advice and mix in the best of the earlier suggestions, that's pretty much what I wound up doing:
I used Setup Assistant to create a "NewGuest" account on the MacBook Pro, with minimal information submitted to Apple (basically, only my correct name and address, etc.). Then I immediately used the Migration Assistant to bring over ONLY 1) my main User admin account and its Home folder and 2) the computer settings from the G5 Power Mac.
Finally, I changed the "NewGuest" to a regular account (non-admin), rebooted the MPB, and deleted NewGuest and its home folder. Then began the long job of feeding appropriate software into my new MBP: installing or reinstalling the latest Intel versions of all of my key productivity apps and utilities.
So far, I'm getting very good results. No MBP indigestion, but it's daunting to look at a new Dock that's now almost totally populated by question marks (the G5's Dock had almost fifty apps)! There's one major benefit: a chance to reconsider whether I really needed all of that stuff to begin with, and if I need it now!
The need-it-now vital stuff is being pulled over via Firewire, and I've just bought an external USB 3 enclosure for the G5's main boot drive, and it will now be available as a handy source for various files, docs, settings as I need them, and for any "second thoughts" that I might have about what really belongs on the MacBook Pro's boot disk. All is well, and it looks like it will STAY well (but stay tuned!).
Thanks, y'all! Hope this helps someone else facing a similar challenge.
