Dual 1.8 Refuses to Burn 16X DVD

Any way to get my Mac to burn 15Xs DVDs? Every time I try to use a 16Xs blank DVD for burning purpose I get a no can do type message. 8Xs DVDs are fine. I know that my Sony DVD burner is limited to *Xs burns but why does it refuse to use 16Xs disks? (8Xs disks are getting hard to find.) It doesn't matter if I use iDVD, Toast Titanium 7.X, or Apple's Disk utility to burn. No luck.

It is going to a 16Xs disk that causes the
problem
Better start buying up all the 8X you can. I have
not used any 16X.
I just picked up 100 on sale for about 30 cents a piece. I just wonder if Apple will come up with some firmware to fix this problem. I have an old Panasonic desk top DVD player/burner for recording shows on cable and it handles 16Xs without a problem and I doubt whether it can burn at high speeds. It records and dubs in real time.
8Xs disks ARE becoming VERY HARD to find. The last batch were a manager sale of 50 pack TDKs for $14.95 and we know why they were on sale, don't we (8Xs disks).

  • Imac won't read my burned 16x DVD-r's - but reads 8x just fine?!?!

    Hello.
I have been burning CD's and DVD's on my imac PowerPC G5 *(Burner: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR K04F)* for 2 years now with absolutely no problems. Historically, I've used 8x dvd-r's from many different brands and I use Popcorn burning software. Now suddenly, all the electronic stores are carrying only 16x dvd-r's, so I bought some (Maxell), but I don't think my imac likes them. I can burn a movie onto the 16x blank dvd-r using Popcorn and the burning process works fine, process completes without problem, etc. If I put the burned 16x dvd-r disc into my stand alone DVD player on my TV, it will play with no problems, but when I put any of these burned 16x discs back into my imac, the imac will spin it for 10 seconds and then spit it out. However, my imac continues to read/play any of my 8x dvd-r's or commercial dvd's without any problem. Also, no problems with cd-rs.
Anyone have any thoughts on what's happening here? I have cleaned the lens with one of those disc cleaners with the tiny brushes (I ran the cleaning process at least 10 times in a row just to make sure!). I also checked Pioneer's site and I see firmware updates for a handful of their dvd burners but nothing for the DVDR-K04 I have. I called Apple but sadly my AppleCare has expired, and their only advice was to run 'Software Update' but there's nothing in there regarding this issue. So I'm wondering if anyone here might have any suggestions or help?
    Thanks for reading!!
    BB

It could depend on what format the content is that is not readable - if you have access to the Windows machine, you could check on the format (and/or know the format if you burned it)? Is it just .jpeg's? Or did you make a slideshow resulting in an mpg2 possibly? In that case, you'd need to buy the MPEG2 Playback Component from the Apple Store (less than $20) because Quicktime can't read that format without the playback component.
Can the DVD be played in a regular DVD player?

  • Burning 16x DVDs (im)possible ?

    Hello community,
I owe a G3 800 (PowerMac4,5) with a standard internal DVD burner. I burned DVDs (-R) for years. I recently bought a case of 16x DVD -R (Philips), and I am having problems at the beginning of session, with a double error message prompting that I could not print the DVD (the first time, the error message was even more precise, with something related to being unable to calibrate the laser etc...). I tried with another brand 16X DVD-R (Imation), and the same happens now. I do not have any left of my old 8X DVDs (the last one worked well a few days ago). I cannot find more on the market (Valencia, Spain) which apparently has switched to the 16X standard. On one box of these, I picked a warning message on the possibility for having to upgrade the firmwares of burner (intended to PC owners probably). CD Burning is unaffected. The problem happens with Toast, Disk-Utility as well as finder burning, although with different messages (I grabbed the Toast message images if needed).
OK, now my question: could it be that this only change from 8x to 16x is causing the trouble ? If yes, is there a solution (other than hunting for old stocks of 8x... ?).
    Many thanks
    Yvan

There are several different Manufactures of 16X DVD-R Media.
Not all will operate in the slower DVD burners, You already found that out.
You must buy the absolute best Media. Next you must read the packaging of the media you buy. You need to purchase 16X media that tells you on the packaging that it will burn at 1X,2X,4X,8X,and 16X.
    Not all of them will.
I use Maxell 16X DVD-R in the individual Jewel Cases.
Many of these other manufactures will not burn at all the slower speeds and they also use other companies to manufacture there products.

Another suggestion, let the Software choose the burning speed.
Do not manually choose the burning speed.

  • 16X DVD/ IDVD incompatibility

When burning dvd's on IDVD on 16x DVD's, they play with short freezes, somethimes won't play at all on regular (non computer) DVD players. I should add that it played well on the computer after burning.
After making 3 or 4 coasters-I called Apple Tech support. They say they are "sometimes" incompatible with 16X. I burned the same IDVD at 8x, and it was better, but not perfect. Still had a few of those crackles most of us have experienced, and a slight freeze, but it was much better.
Does anyone know when Apple will address this imcompatibility with IDVD or IMovie in burning 16X DVD's?
Besides eliminating a stack of 16X blank dvd's I can't use anymore, would like to save everyone else from buying 16X's when they will not work properly.

If the "potential" capability of a blank DVD is to be written at 16x 'standard' speed, that means that 16x is the maximum rate at which it can be written.
Like the speedometer dial on, say, an Audi A3; it can potentially be driven at, say, 260 kph. That doesn't mean that it's always appropriate to drive it at that speed: it just means that the car may reach that speed.
The SuperDrive in your Mac may be capable of burning a disc at 16x - and on some occasions perhaps it can - but it's only certified by Apple to make successful burns at 4x. That may be because the rest of the burning process can't keep up with that rate of "throughput" ..maybe the data-handling 'reservoir' - which allocates memory to the burning process, and which fills with data, then releases it in a steady stream to the burner and refills itself as it empties - can only cope with 4x throughput, and leaves bits of data missing if it tries to work any faster. Maybe there's not enough power available to run the burn laser at optimum output while spinning the drive at fast speeds. Maybe the tracking's not stable enough.
So you may need to restrict burn speeds to 4x by choosing that as the rate at which to burn. Perhaps it's physically possible to burn at faster rates ..as you've tried to do.. but Apple apparently only guarantees the results if burned at 4x.
Apple used to warn, with the 1st generation alumin(i)um PowerBooks, that you mustn't use discs which were rated higher than the SuperDrive mechanism's speed, otherwise the drive would be damaged. Those original PBs burned only at 1x ..then they were uprated to 2x, but users were warned not to use 4x or higher-speed discs because higher speeds might wreck the computer ..maybe that was due to too much heat being generated during hi-speed burns. Burn speeds have gradually increased with successive models, but I'd reckon that it's best to stick with Apple's own ratings to avoid causing damage, or producing poor DVDs.

    ALL:
I have an 8x superdrive in my G5 dual 1.8 ghz system. I know a while back Apple had potential firmware issues when you tried to burn a 4x or faster dvd in a 2x burner. Does anyone know of any compatibility issues putting a 16x DVD + or - R into an 8x superdrive.

  • Need HELP to burn 35 DVDs very URGENT !!!

I have created a 16/9 screen DVD, size 451 Mo.
    Problem 1:
When I register it as Disk image, I cannot open it on my HD to preview before burn it. When I click on the icon, it says "specify application", so I put iDVD, but it doesn't open. So I burn my project directly from iDVD. It takes time. I need to burn 35!!! Is there is possibility to fixe it, or I have to encoder every time I have to burn the same DVD?
    Problem 2:
When I burn my project to DVD-R x16 Verbatim, using "Optimal quality" or "Optimal performances", my quality image is suffering. Pixels are becoming too big (like 1mmx1mm mosaique), so it is difficult to read text and to see pictures. My original project is perfect. I thought I was DVD quality, because I was using DVD+R x16 verbatim. But it seems to be iDVD problem.
Thank to all who know anything about and can help. I have to deliver the project by the end of this week.

    Problem 1 Follow these directions:
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

Problem 2 Burn the disk image with Disk Utility and select a speed 4X or slower from the speed pop-up.

  • When burning a dvd an error message comes up before the burning even begins

That is of course, if I can get the comp to read the DVD first.

Let me see if I can help out.
Just because your drive says it is capable of 8X doesn't mean it will burn at 8X.
Depending on what you are using to try to burn with in the way of software, I suggest you burn at a slower Speed. like 2X. Apples Software is entry level and it works but many users find harder to use than the top of the line in burning software like Roxio's Toast 7.
Here is the explination on the different DVD's.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
Just bear one thing in mind.
When it comes to DVD Players, Formats, and Burners, of the hundreds of different manufactures, All are opting to be the Industry Standard, and it appears they insert there little chinks that almost force users to use there products exclusively.
There is always a backlash from these marketing ploys.
In a perfect world you would think any DVD would work in any DVD Player and Computer but sorry it is not so there are so many things that come into play. Format, Speed, Brand, Software used. Any one or combination can affect the process.
    The problem is multi-dimensional.
First check in your particular profiler on EXACTLY what type(FORMAT) of DISK's your burner will burn.
Next please do not just randomly go out and buy a spool of 30 50 or 100 disc's because they are on sale.
There is a HUGE difference in the type format disc's you buy
There is also a HUGE difference in the BRAND you choose, some are junk.
There is also a HUGE Difference in the SPEED of the media you choose.
If any one or a combination of any of the 3 mentioned above can cause burn error's or no burn at all or spit the disk out.
So it is a good idea to do a little homework on your Optical Drive and see just exactly what it is capable of and what it will use for media.
    (ONE LAST NOTE)
Many of the Media Manufactures are becomming aware that many of the Apple Burners are having trouble with there Media. Maxell has just come out with a brand new one that is. Maxell 16X DVD-R.
The key is read the packaging. this new media tells you that it will burn at any speed from 1X through 16X, and it works very well on the older Optical Drives. I also opt to use the individual that include the cases there seems to be much better quality, not like that of the spools.
Remember Apples Drives to date are much pickier than those used in the PC community.
    Cheers Don

  • Can't Burn "Imation DVD+R" on Macbook Pro

Hello, a couple of days ago I tried to burn some files on an "Imation DVD+R." I have an entire spindle of blank Imation DVD + R (Single Layered) and the computer refuses to burn any file on any of them. The discs themselves are in excellent condition.
When I used the "Finder Burner," I got the following error:
"The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
When i used an application called "Burn" and the "Disc Utility," I got the follow error:
"The disc can't be burned; it might be incompatible with this disc drive. Please try a different brand of disc, or try burning at a slower speed."
I went to the Apple Store and told a Genius what was going on. He put a "Staple DVD-R" and it worked flawlessly. He told me that he believed I purchased a bad "spindle of discs" because "normally Imation works just fine." I went home and tried to burn a file on the disc using my mother's computer (a PC). The disc burned flawlessly. I have about 30 blank DVDs that remain in this spindle. I would hate to get rid of all of them. What worries me is that I think my computer once burned these Imation DVD+Rs just fine (like I said, I really don't remember.)
I called AppleCare and was transferred to a Senior Manager. He said for me to send my computer in and he'll replace the optical drive.
Before I do so, does anyone have any suggestions? Is anyone else unable to burn these Imation DVD+Rs?
Here are some specs on my computer:
    - Macbook Pro (Late 2008)
    - Snow Leopard (10.6.4)
    - Optical Drive is "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868"
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
    Best,
    --André

    A brief update:
I dropped my computer off to FedEx on Thurs. evening (6:30 pm) and received it back on Sat. morning (8:30 am). That was incredibly fast!
Anyway, the following parts were replaced.
    - ODD Super Drive (Symptom: Optical Drive Read/Write Data Error)
    - Main Logic Board 2.4Ghz (Symptom: Sensors Test Failed)
    - Optical Cable (Symptom: Drive Read/Write Data Error)
Moral of the story: if a Genius finds a "work-around" a the problem rather than trying to determine the actual cause of the problem, call AppleCare. Do not be afraid to speak with a Senior Manager (because, in my cause, the normal AppleCare technician didn't think anything was wrong.)
Thanks again for your all help.

  • Burning a DVD from CS4 on a Windows 7 computer

I'm unable to burn a DVD from the edited timeline in CS4.   I have Windows 7 Home Premium software loaded on my PC.  When I go from Dynamic Link to Encore I get an error message stating Encore is not compatible with my PC.  How can I burn a DVD using CS4 and Windows 7?

Some people have problems with Dynamic Link, so first do it the old fashioned way to see if Encore works at all

As well as the below, right click the Encore icon and select Run as Administrator, which is NOT the same thing as running the computer with the Administrator account, and which fixes several "odd" problems... To create a dual layer DVD (or a BluRay?), you MUST have Encore set to use the Run as Administrator option

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the slowest possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help
Use Taiyo Yuden single layer or Verbatim dual layer
Or Falcon Pro for inkjet printable dual layer

  • IDVD burning blank dvds

To start off, here's my specs:
    Macbook Pro
    Mac OSX (10.6.5)
    iDVD (7.0.4)
Every time I try to burn a DVD it always says that the file exceeds max content. I then go to Project Info and change the encoding setting to either High Quality or Professional Quality. It goes through the process and then when I go to preview the DVD it plays, but there is no video file - its just all black. I've tried different files, different file types, and even tried to switch to a different user account. When I either burn or preview the movie, it is all black (and sometimes there is sound from the movie playing - but no picture). I only actually burned 2 DVDs because I didn't want to use up all my DVDs. I have plenty of hard drive space and the files are all saved on my comp. I never had this problem before - I used to be able to burn DVDs no problem. I did a system restore because my Mac was acting up and ever since, I can not burn DVDs.

You may need to reinstall iDVD. If you are not getting video even in preview, there is something wrong with the iDVD application. Also, were the iLife apps included on your computer's restore disks? If so, you may need to update iDVD.
First, though, try trashing the preference file:
Close iDVD, go to your Home File(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash.
    Reopen iDVD.
Open a new iDVD project. Delete encoded assets just to be sure no stray files from another project are causing problems.
The settings of High or Professional Quality are for projects that are 60 minutes in length or more (single-layer DVDs; dual layer is twice that). Best Performance is the setting for projects of less than 60 minutes. iDVD is not concerned with the GB size of the project, only the time-length.
What is the source of your videos? What format are they? Are you using iMovie? What version?

  • 16X DVDs won't read

I have a G5 PowerMac (latest version I believe). It came with a SONY DVD RW DW-U21A installed. I tried replacing it with a Memorex DVD unit to be able to use 16x DVDs. It still won't read 16x DVDs even though the Memorex DVD drive will burn an dread them just fine in a PC. Is there a special drive that I need or is it a matter of the G5 not being able to read 16x no matter what?

I think you've got the same "software fault" that's affecting a number of us at the moment.. I'm was trying to log this with Apple but I'm just out of support so they won't help.. They wont even acknowledge my question.. Search on "DVD not reading blank media" or similar..

  • Getting multiple copies of iPhoto slideshow when I burn a dvd - why?

I just learned how to create a slideshow in iPhoto and struggled through the learning curve to be able to burn it as it appears in iPhoto. I got so excited today when I burned a dvd and it actually played on my TV's dvd player, though it was missing the iDVD theme intro. Then when my slideshow was over, the theme intro played and the entire slideshow played again. In other words, I have at least 2 copies of the slideshow on the disc.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? thanks!

    Hi
Most common origin to this are:
Brand of DVD used - NoName, Memorex etc cheap brands might work as Data-DVDs - BUT NOT as Video-DVDs
Type of DVD used - I only use SL-DVD-R as they also playback on older DVD-players. DVD+R for newer DVD-players. Never ever DVD+/-RW. Dual-Layers usually creates more problems than Single-Layers
BURN SPEED - Very IMPORTANT factor - I never go faster than x4 - Normally I use x2
Material used - Video Codec, Photo and Audio file formats
Video-Codec: StreamingDV, AIC and HDV (I use)
Photo: .jpg - NO .bmp or other - all converted to .jpg first
Audio: .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz (as on Audio-CDs) - NO .mp3, wma etc ailient formats - all converted to ..aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz first
Free Space: on Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard Disk - I never go less than 25Gb when doing Video-DVDs (for SD-Quality Video - if HD material is used 4-5 times more are a safe low level) (Other external Hard Disks - DO NOT COUNT as space here can not be addressed by Mac OS or iDVD for it’s massive use of .temp files)
Dusty DVD-burner Laser: I use a Cleaning DVD (no liquid but the one with brushes) from time to time.
Harmed DVD-burner Laser: Easy to do by burning more than three DVDs at a time - I let it rest for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs. If this happened - then only a costly repair will help. It will not heal by it self.
OBS: There are more than one Laser in the DVD-Burner so other functions might work OK as Playback CD/DVDs and even burn CDs. Still being broken.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Does Superdrive stop seeing already burned Sony DVD-RW's?

I use .mac's Backup program with Sony DVD-RW's. Out of a box of ten, I've had 3 that Backup initially "sees", but then when it tries to burn, the burn fails.
After that, I can't get Disk Utility or Finder to "see" the DVD-RW. Note, the DVD-RW's in question were successfully burned at least once before this occurs.
Is there anyway to restore or erase the DVD-RW's so that Finder/Disk Utility and/or .mac Backup can use them?
Or do I have an extraordinarily bad box of discs?

I always read the back of the Jewel cases and make sure they will burn 1X through 16X this way it will burn on just about anything out there. There quality is top notch and you can buy them in a 3 pack for under $4.00
See if that helps. Cheers Don
