Dual 1ghz processor G4 with FCP 6

Hi. I've seen this question around, but not specifically for my machine, so here goes:
I have a Mirrored-door dual 1Ghz processor G4 currently running FCP 5.whatever the last update number was. I'm now back in school and the school has Studio 2 (FCP 6). I'm happy with the system I have, but I can't take files back and forth from home to school, so I'm thinking about getting Studio 2 at home. I know right off the bat that I'll need a new video card, but I noticed that the minimum requirements are for a 1.25ghz G4. Will a dual processor 1ghz work? I'm not concerned with being able to use motion or color at home, just FCP and Soundtrack Pro.
I know that the real answer is buy a new computer, but that's not really an option right now.
Thanks.

Will a dual processor 1ghz work?
No, categorically no, it will not work. I've done this with my Quicksilver 1 gig dualie and this has been asked a few times in the past week. Search the board for my answers.

  • Logic on a dual 1ghz processor machine.

I have a quicksilver dual 1ghz processor machine with 1.5gig ram. The minimum requirement for Logic is a single 1.25ghz processor. It would "seem" like a dual 1ghz processor board would trumph a single 1.25ghz processor. I went to the local Apple store and asked several "genious" and software reps if I could run logic on my machine and the best I could get was "ummmmmm, good question...."
Does anyone know if I can run it? Apple doesn't - and if you buy the software and it doesn't work, you can't return it.

I was using a G4 MDD 1 ghz dual when I first upgraded to LP8. it did work but it was much slower and problematic than LP7. I found a good deal on a G5 on ebay and I am very glad I went that way. You will get a warning message when you instal Logic Studio, but it will work

  • Dual 2 GB G5 with FCP. Can I add a video monitor?

    Hi,
I have the dual 2 GHz G5 with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro graphics card. I'm using an Apple Studo Display connected to one port of the PCI card.
Is there a way to plug a video monitor into the other port so I can see what real video looks like as I edit in FCP?
If not, what are my options?
    Thanks,

In your manual there is a simple description of how to connect an NTSC/PAL monitor.
It involves firewire out to an DV/Analog converter (can be your camera) then using analog cables to the TV.
The video card is not the way to go.
    good luck.

  • Help with setup of G4 dual 1ghz AGP system

    Hi,
I bought a stripped down G4 dual 1ghz machine off eBay.
When it powers up, there is no beep and the display does not fire up. I have tried a variety of video cards (PCI and AGP) that I have hanging around.
    What I have:
10,000rpm 15gig scsi drive and adapter card
7200rpm 80 gig ide drive and adapter card
    Original cd/dvd drive
    512meg sdram
When I power on, the fans and drive power up. A red light on the motherboard is on. The usb attached keyboard does not seem to have any power (the little light doesn't turn on when I press caps lock)
I am trying to install the operating system. The install disk is in the drive. I have tried resetting the PRAM and PMU with no results.
I am kind of new to the Mac world. Anyone have a starting point for me?

Disconnect the drives, that part will come later. Concentrate on getting the machine to chime and light up the screen. The chime is generated in software when at least 1K of RAM is working and the processor can execute an instruction test without getting lost. It should be able to chime and light up the screen to show the flashing question mark with no drives.
Remove and re-seat anything with a connector on it. Use anti-static procedures, especially when handling RAM and Processor. The Dual 1 GHz uses the 167 MHz Bus, so it needs DDR 333/PC2700 memories. Were you thinking of buying more memory? getting another module now would give you more stuff that is "Known good".
The single 1.25 GHz processors are simpler, run at the faster (167 MHz) Bus speed, and are a little cheaper if you need to buy on a "Known good" processor for testing.
There is a G4 diagnostics CD image available for download, but you need it to chime and light up the screen first.
The 10.4 CD has Apple System profiler available, and its reports include a "diagnostics" report.
almost forgot: You need 3.2 Volts out of that 3.6 Volt 1/2 AA battery. You can try removing it for testing, but you will need one with at least 3.2 Volts for daily use.

  • How to use Real time execution trace toolkit with Dual-core processor??

    hi there
    the situation as follows:
i have a computer (PC and Laptop) types with Dual-core processors, and am trying to do simulation using Multi-core technology and based on different simulation scenarios...starting from sequantial processing,.......Piple lining processing strategy. so that i can differentiate the time delay between those types of processing based on (Using 1 processor then dual-core processor Computers)
my question is: As i read through Ni's white papers i saw many notes refer to Real-time execution trace toolkit to investigate the (processing-time , etc) of multi-core processors in processing diffenent algorithms. My algorithms are to be run on 1 computer with dual-core processor BUT, not in real time environments, that is ( No hardware to be connected to my pc) only algorithms running on my pc....
So, is it possible to use Real time execution trace toolkit  or anyother tools in LabVIEW to show processing-delays and/or anyother timing critical issues without using my application for  real- time hardware.???
in other words: how to use Real time execution trace toolkit  in non-hardware and/or real-time scenarios???
    please help me in this.
Any suggestion, comments, feedback.....is absolutely highly appreciated
    thanks a lot in advance

    Hey,
The Realtime Execution Trace Toolkit only works for NI RT Targets.
But you can use the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit, just search for it under ni.com.

  • Turning on Virtualization in Compaq/HP Presario C500 with Dual Core processor

Hoping someone can help me out.
Running a Compaq Presario C500 laptop with the Dual Core processor. Intel's site says the processor supports virtualization.
However, in the F.24 A Phoenix BIOS setup (pressing F10 on Startup), there's no option to turn on Intel Virtualization Technology on any of the Tabs. Tried downgrading the BIOS to F.14A -- as the description says; "Adds item to Setup utility (F10) to enable/disable Intel Processor Virtualization Technology."
However, when I startup, press F10 -- there's no option for turning this on.
Is there another place to go -- other than the F10 setup area of the BIOS -- to turn on Virtualization Technology?
If an expert out there can help, it would be very appreciated!

As long as it meets the minimum technical specifications, although the more above the minimum you have, the better the experience.

  • Problem with dual core processors: 50% ressources are not used.

    Hello all,
I have noticed, that the java app cannot get normally more than 50% of the system ressources. I use different threads in my application, but the app still does't achieve 100% of system power. Max 50-60%.
If I run two processes, I get 100%, but I can't share memory space between this two process. Or I can?
What is the best way to write an application, that can use 100%, in other words, full power of dual core processors.
    Thanks in advance.

Try thread.setPriority() method. I am making guess
    and any comments
from experts on this method will be highly
    acknowledged.Yeah. Don't do that, it's a bad idea.
Back to the original post, there are two reasons this can be happening.
    1) Your code is not efficient multi-threading wise. If you are for example running two thread that are in theory parallel but in actual fact provide linear execution so that one is almost blocked by the other then multiple threads and multiple cores will underutilized. It's hard to speculate further on this without seeing your code.
    2) The OS. First of all there is the issue of how the oS shares up the processor between processes. This varies and may or may not be configurable. The bottom line on this point is that your OS may be capping the utilization of the processor by process. Again there's not enough information give by you to expand on this point. The second OS issue regards how the OS deals with multi-core. Just because you have a multicore processor does not mean that your OS automatically can take advantage of it.

  • Mac to use with FCP

    Hi Everyone
Quick question... I'm looking to purchase a third mac just for the purpose of capturing video as well as burning DVDs. Capturing will be to external firewire drives (SD Video Only). I'm using FCP 4 and DVD Studio 2.
What should my minimal requirements be? Do I need a dual processor or will 1 processor do the job without dropping frames? I'm basically looking to spend as little as possible and get the bare minimums to do these jobs and help out with my workflow.
    Any input will be appriciated....
    Thanks in advance
    Arkadeous

I'd recommend a used G4 or G5 dual processor. Even though you just want this system just for capturing in FCP, it could also serve as a backup if one of your other systems goes down or needs service. I recommended the dual processor models because FCP is so highly processor dependent.
I'm assuming that you're capturing to an external Firewire drive so you can move the captured footage to one of your other systems for editing. In that case, I'd highly recommend adding a PCI Firewire card to create a second Firewire bus, thus greatly reducing the chance of dropped frames. The cards can usually be found for well under $60.00.

  • Buying used G4s for use with FCP

How well does FCP take advantage of dual-processor capabilities? I'm debating getting a G4 dual 533 vs. a G4 1.0 GHz machine. Which would work faster? Or are they both too painfully slow to even be worth it?
Thanks for helping the new guy!

My G4/400 is now 5 years old (I upgraded the processor last year to 1.5 Ghz). It works extremely well with FCP 5.0.4 with my particular setup - certainly very very usable and not at all painfully slow. But I'm not editing Hollywood blockbusters.
The only limitation is that I can't install Motion, but I knew that before I bought FCStudio.
Don't know anything about comparable performance of old dual-processor G4's.

  • Noob in Need of Help: Where can I find a 1Ghz Processor?

Hi, I'm Elaine, I was given a 450Mhz, G4 Gigabit ethernet Tower as payment for some graphics work (yeah, I feel like I got cheated, but that's just me).
Anyhoo, I'm rather fond of mac computers, but I'm finding to do the work I do I need to basically upgrade the processor, RAM, and hard drive and of course, add a TON of software (I'm a writer-filmmaker-animator-graphic novel creator-self publisher).
From what I can figure out from reading the posts here, I could make do with a 1Ghz processor and about 2Gb SDRAM and a 160Gb hard drive. Most of the hardware I can find on ebay, except for the processor.
Someone posted something about a "sonnet" processor, but I couldn't find anything like that.
Could someone PLEASE tell me where I can find an AFFORDABLE processor?
Can I use an AMD processor? Newegg seems to have one that's a single core selling for $33.00 if that's to be believed.
Well, I won't keep prattling at you, and will simply thank you all in advance for your assistance.
    Namarie,
    E.

Seeing you were given this Mac for payment, and seeing that you're new to Macs, you need to ask yourself if you have the skills needed to do these upgrades as well as whether you want to plunk down a sizeable amount of cash to upgrade a 10 year old Mac that will never perform as well as either a newer model or brand new Mac.
If this is a 450 MHz Gigabit Ethernet model it is probably a dual CPU 450 model. I do not think you can put a single CPU upgrade into a dual processor Mac. I believe you need to stick witwh dual processor CPU upgrades.
AND you cannot use just any CPU chip that would be available for Window PCs.
The CPUs in older Macs are PowerPC CPU processors made by Freescale (formerly Motorola).
Dual processor upgrades will not be cheap!
A company called Other World Computing sells CPU upgrade, but none are very cheap.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=165&type=Processor&T I=5206&shoupgrds=Show+Upgrades
Based on what you listed that you would like to do with a Mac, the Mac you were given as payment is really not up to the challenges you want to put this Mac through.
It's just going to get too costly.
The Mac you've been given is just not worth plunking that kind of money into.
I would either try and sell it or recycle it and look at new or newer model Macs with more computing horsepower.
If a new Intel Mac tower or iMac is too expensive for you, my advice would be to give a serious look at the high end Mac Mini. Price to performance ratio is hard to beat and will easily do everything you want to do on a Mac.

  • PMG4 dual 1ghz wont start up

I'm working on a MDD dual 1ghz. It wasn't starting up...the power light would come on for a second then turn off, then the fans would start spinning. after a couple of seconds it went into wind tunnel mode.
we ordered a replacement power supply, which i put in today. and it still wont start up. same problem. I checked the voltage on pin 24 (with the computer off as it says in the troubleshooting guide) and it was 0 volts, not 12.
I suppose it's possible the new power supply was DOA, but does anyone know if the logic board might either be the reason its not booting, or if the logic board could kill the power supply somehow?
      Mac OS X (10.4)

I have the same situation with a single 1Ghz MDD. No chime, power to all fans and HD is ok, but front light only stays on for a couple of seconds and after about 10 seconds, cooling fan shifts into high gear. No video either. I also tried another power supply, but the same thing happens. I guess the question is: 1. Is it possible that both power supplies are bad? 2. Is the motherboard bad? or 3. is the processor bad. Since I don't have another MDD handy, I can't play 'switch the parts" to test each. What else can I do? Can I use the known good power supply from an earlier G4 to test? or are the contacts wrong?
