Dual 2.0 G5 2.5 G ram 10.4.11 mac just shutting off... during idle times?

Hey everyone. I have an older G5 bought in June 2004 and I'm having problems with it randomly shutting down. It seems to be happening when it is idle, running itunes or idle with screen saver running. Any hints at what is causing this problem are GREATLY appreciated (I obviously don't want the computer to get damaged from just turning itself off).
Thanks!
John

I wonder if it's a power supply problem. We had that on a few G5s where I work. Basically, they would just go off like we'd pulled the plug. Once we replaced the power supply in the computer, they stopped powering off.
One thing you can look at is the previous shutdown cause. It's probably in the system log, but I don't have any that are old enough to have a reboot in them. You can also get them from the Terminal app using dmesg. Just open Terminal from your Utilities folder, copy and paste this at the prompt:

sudo dmesg | grep -i shutdown

Then, hit the "enter" key on your keyboard. You'll be asked for your password, type it in (you won't see the letters echo on screen, though, and you may get a little "lecture" first about the power of sudo), and hit "enter" again. You'll see something a little like this:

4.170.13.1Previous Shutdown Cause: 0

The messages for the G5s are different, though, I do remember that. They'll mention either the SMU or the PMU.
Post your error number and I'll see if it jogs my memory. There are a few numbers, but I think I got -122 when my G5 iMac's power supply was failing. But I also got another number when my UPS was draining out during a power outage and my iMac didn't shut off. So I'm not sure. But I think if it's a low, positive, number, or zero, that's good.

hi there guys,
will logic pro x run on my mac mini dual core intel i5 with 4gb of ram and mountain lion ?
I'm not sure if my machine is 64 bit - it is the current model base mac mini.
Many thanks for any help you can offer !

SkiJumptoes is right. 4GB is not enough to comfortably run Logic X.
Your Mac Mini will need DDR3 SODIMM RAM. That website seems incredibly steep though. I guess that's the price of finding it for you. You're better off going to any below:

Not only would it be safe but less expensive as well. The tray loaders are deemed to be the most reliable. Apple does not support Blueray so avoid that.
Ciao.

• My 2010 15 in. 2.66 Ghz i7 dual core macbook pro randomly shuts off and reboots

I am a student at a college, and I recently bought a used MacBook Pro from the computer store which is part of a 4 year turnaround program when Faculty get new machines. It is a 2010 15 in. 2.66 GHz i7 dual core MacBook Pro, and I have had it for almost 1 week. After I got it, I installed Office 365 and Microsoft Document Connection. Almost immediately after doing this, and when I opened a Office application, it shut down. So I thought that installing Office 365 was somehow causing the computer to shut down. But over the past week, I've had maybe 3 more random shut downs including when all Office applications were quit and thus inactive. They were pretty rare, so I actually thought it wasn't such a problem because they didn't interrupt my work too badly. The screen suddenly goes black with no warning, and then immediately without me doing anything the computer reboots to grey screen, apple logo with languages / licensing stuff, tells me I shut down my computer due to a problem do I want to return to the screen I was on with all my stuff on it?, I say yes and it quickly goes to the desktop with everything I was working on pulled up.
So I didn't mind too much until last night, when it shut down twice within rapid succession of one another. Shut down, reboot, within seconds of me clicking on mail or whatever, boom, shuts down, reboots again. That was annoying. Then this morning, I wake up, open my computer to do work, BOOM shut down 1, open again, try to work, this time I'm using Safari when boom shuts down again time #2 within 1 minute of last shut down, then BOOM shuts down A THIRD TIME this time within 5 minutes of the last shut down. But still 3 SHUT DOWN/ REBOOTS in 10 minutes. Needless to say this is extremely annoying. Also, these last three times it has been on Battery power, but last night it was plugged in, so I don't think it's a battery issue. Also, my computer was fully charged (or almost) this morning, so it's not like it's on really low battery or anything like that.
I checked this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5044196?start=30&tstart=0, and it seems like I may be having kernel panics due to a defective NVIDIA graphics card. How do I tell what is causing these shut down cycles? How do I get it fixed? Also, needless to say, this MacBook is 4 years old, and I am not the original owner / purchaser, so I'm sure it's out of warranty. Does anyone know how much this will cost me at the Apple Store?

ggp057,
it could be due to the NVIDIA GPU defect in the 15-inch Mid 2010 models. It might also be due to faulty RAM. Do you know whether it has its factory-installed RAM, or if the RAM had been replaced? The GPU defect can be confirmed by making an appointment at your nearest Apple store to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro. Yes, it’s long out of warranty; the diagnostic test should be gratis, but if the defect is present, it typically costs a few hundred dollars to remedy (it involves a logic board replacement).
Did you also receive the two grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro? Among other things, it has your model’s Apple Hardware Test. If you didn’t receive them, and the computer store is unable to provide them to you, then you can purchase a replacement pair from Apple. The Apple Hardware Test includes a RAM test, although it isn’t able to detect all possible RAM problems.

• How do I replace a bad RAM chip on my Mac Pro?

When I start up my Mac, I keep getting a window that tells me to restart my computer. I've run Disk Warrior and saved my files to an external hard drive, but I still get the little black window telling me to restart my computer. No matter what I do. Now, I can't even run Disk Warrior again. The tech people at Alsoft say that it's very possible that my RAM chip is bad, and that it needs to be replaced. How do I do that? And where do I get RAM chips?

Before replacing RAM chip, you'd better check them with Apple Hardware Test or memtest OSX.
http://www.memtestosx.org
Memory sticks are available at OWC or Amazon, though it depends on your Mac Pro model.

• I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear. However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
The RAM modules are paored 2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and 6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
thanks for your responce

Exporting via Compressor may be recommended but it is slow and doesn't fully support all available filters, etc.
Try exporting the timeline as a QT Movie (the "normal" export) using Current Settings and them submit the resultant clip to Compression. Works for me...

• Will upgrading ram improve speed in Mac and windows (VMware fusion)?

I Am using VMware fusion for music production and that program requires a lot of workspace. I have a MacBook Pro 4gb ram and when I turn VMware on it goes to 2 gb ram in Mac and 2 gb ram in windows. My Mac speed is normal when VMware fusion is turned off but when I turn it on my Mac is very slow. Will upgrading ram improve speed in mac and also in windows (windows is also very slow)
Btw my english isn't very good

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM hungry. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
In your case it will most likely help. You should plan on at least 8 GBs or more, depending upon what your model supports.

• Can I Run 333Mhz ram in a power mac g5 that uses 400mhz?

Can I Run 333Mhz ram in a power mac g5 that uses 400mhz?

No; RAM which can't keep up with the computer's bus will be ignored. Faster RAM will work as long as it's able to operate at the speed the bus requires.
In any case, ensure that the vendor advertises compatibility with your Mac model.

• Dual 2.0 G5: shuts down during startup

hi, my G5 was working perfectly until last night when i was doing several things at once (incl. video editing tasks) and the system hung: i could move the mouse around, but everything else was completely unresponsive. after waiting a while and no change, i performed a hard-shutdown (holding the power button down for several seconds).
now, when i bootup, i hear the chime, the grey apple logo comes up, and after about a minute or so the system just turns off.
i've searched the board and haven't come across any similar postings. anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?
much appreciated!
G5 Dual 2.0, Dell 2405FPW Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I had a similar problem last night as well! I was playing Battlefield 1942 when my G5 Dual 2.0 just switched off! No warning, no messages, nothing, just switched off like the someone had pulled the plug. I pressed the power button and had the same booting problems as richlin71. I booted from my Tiger DVD and ran Disk Utility and it said the disk was ok. I tried to boot from my eDrive (TechTool Pro 4.0.6) which is on a second internal drive and that wouldn't boot either, it would switch off again. Ran the Apple Hardware Tests, it found no problems. I pulled the the plug from the wall, waiting for 30 seconds and tried again, this time it booted and everything is back to normal.... Strange...

• Is there a noticeable difference from a 2gb ram to 8gb ram on 2.3ghz mac mini?

Just asking if it is worth upgrading to 8gb on my 2.3ghz mac mini with 2gb of ram in it.

Ram is so darn cheep. I would always opt for more ram up to 8 GB just in case I need it someday.

• EMac RAM compatible with Power Mac G4?

I am interested in a craigslist auction that is selling RAM pulled from an eMac. All the information given is that he has two 168-pin DIMMs of 128MB and 512MB memory. Will this work with a Power Mac G4/400Mhz/AGP graphics version? It also uses 168-pin memory.
PowerMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4) 400MHz G4, 64MB RAM, 20GB HDD, AGP Graphics

Standard RAM for your G4 is 168-pin PC100. Early eMacs used 168-pin PC133 which should be backwards compatible but you need to get assurances. Later eMacs use 184-pin PC2700, same as the later G4 MDDs.
This RAM vendor's page has a good description of the RAM used in various Mac models. They also have decent prices so compare the price to what the private offering asks.
