Dual 20" ACD with Geforce 6600

Hi, is anyone here using dual 20" ACDs with the 6600? I have the stock 6600 in my dual-core 2.3. I read in another thread that performance wasn't great, but that was in relation to Aperture.
What's performance like otherwise? I'm thinking in terms of Final Cut and After Effects, applications that aren't GPU-intensive, but experience with similar would be useful.
Thanks!

The main issue with driving two displays is that it divides the video RAM between the displays. So, your 128MB card acts like two 64MB cards. This isn't likely an issue unless you're playing games or doing something that needs to load textures onto the video card (e.g., Aperture, Motion).
There shouldn't be a noticeble difference in Final Cut since, as you know, it isn't currently GPU accelerated. After Effects, on the other hand, can use the GPU to accelerate previews, depending on the version of AE that you have.

  • Does the Satellite A80-142 with Geforce 6600 Go have MXM??

I own a Satellite A80-142 with a Geforce 6600 Go (128MB) and I really want to know if its directly mounted on the board or if its a MXM. I already searched the web and I have found some 6600 Go cards which are MXMs.
    Can someone please help me??

I have also read that the nVidia designs and produce the GeForce 6600 also with the MXM modules. But this does not mean that every GeForce 6600 card supports this.
As far as I know the A80 notebooks graphic card and the motherboard does not support MXM interface.

  • Quad G5 with Dual 23's and GeForce 6600 problems

I bought this set up to take over as my main Photoshop station. I'm getting a few weird things though:
    1. A ghost curser sits on the opposite monitor that I'm working on near the gutter of the two in the middle, very distracting.
    2. when I'm working on two images in full screen mode in Photoshop and I attempt to move around in the images the screen does not refresh.
Now I wouldn't worry too much if I felt I was pushing an older system but since this is brand new and just how Apple configures it on the site, I'm a little disappointed.
Any ideas? Should I have to upgrade my 6600?

The problem seems to exist only only my "a" monitor (primary), when I try to reproduce the circumstances on the "b" monitor it works fine. So I tried the following:
    1. Flipped the monitors a>b and b>a and the problem is still only on the "a" monitor.
    2. Changed the resolution to 1600x1000, no change in the problem and also flipped the monitors with this resolution setting, no change.
    3. Created new user and problem still exists with the new user.
Do I have a problem with my new "a" 23 Cinema Display or is this 6600 card not enough to push it? It was the card that is configured from Apple for this system.
    I'm frustrated.

  • Dual 27" ACDs with MacPro

I am trying to set up 2 new 27" Apple Cinema Displays with an older MacPro. I have the default video card with 2 DVI-D Dual link outs ( female ). The ACDs have only the Apple Mini Display ( male ) for connection. For the life of me I can't find the proper DVI-d to Mini Display adaptor - everything I find is female.
Can you kind folks point me in the right direction ?

    Yes, 2720QM.
I have to admit just to get the WQXGA res working with discrete-only graphics requires an arcane series of steps to reboot, connect cord, power on monitor in a specific order or not only does it not work, it permanently does not work until I cold shutdown the laptop/monitor.
    As per discussion here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T520-and-WQXGA-2650x1600-resolution-with-Ac...
Possibly getting WQXGA going in integrated/optimus mode requires an even more occult ritual which I haven't figured out yet.

  • Vertical lines on dual display after boot up with NVIDIA GeForce 6600 on G5

I have just upgraded my G5 Quad from OS 10.4 to OS 10.5. Now, whenever I boot up the dual display is split into vertical stripes. I can fix it for that session by unplugging one monitor and plugging it back in again. If I boot up from the 10.5 install disc - same problem. If I boot up from the 10.4 install disc - works fine. The display does not go into vertical segments during the grey start up period, but only when the desktop appears. Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi-
I think what you are seeing is a result of poor, possibly failing, VRAM.
The stripes sound very typical of VRAM errors, and the fact that dual monitors in Leopard are added to the mix furthers the theory.
Leopard uses the graphics card much more than Tiger, that is, pulls more resources (power) from the graphics card.
Add the load of two monitors at relative high resolution, and marginal VRAM can exhibit symtoms of being so; marginal.
I'm curious as to a possible third work around. If the monitors are equipped with power buttons, does cycling one off, then on, allow proper display at the desired resolution?
Also, is this Geforce 6600 the 128MB version, or the 256MB version? This is listed in the System Profiler/Graphics/Displays.

    1. Can I install my GT 8800 card (1st generation) in my new 2.26 early 2009?
    2. Can I add another GeForce GT 120 so I can connect each monitor individually to cards?
    3. Buy the dual link mini display adapter & use only GeForce GT 120? (I don't like adapter idea)
I need your advise for this & I'll be using the system for photography (aperture)

No. You would need the 8800 made for the 2008 Mac Pro.

Yes, but some operations are faster if both displays use the same card.

    That should be best.

Look at this technical specs document, your system should be fine with the possible exception of Color.
As for managing your preference files, use Digital Rebellion's tool.

  • Dual G5 with Geforce fx5200 running 2 -24 inch displays?

I have a dual G5 with the apple 23" display on a Geforce fx5200 card. It runs the 23" plus a 17" Samsung quite well in Logic Pro. I need more real estate though. Question is will the Geforce run an HP 24" to replace the Samsung 17"
    Thanks.

I run Aperture in dual screen mode with a full screen browser on one monitor and and a mirrored image of the selected image on the other monitor.
This doesn't work with dual video cards. Here's a work around
    The temporary solution:
    1. Arrange the monitors in system preferences so the primary monitor is on the left.
2.Set the viewer mode to "Browser and Viewer"
    3. Set the monitors in Aperture to show multiple on the main viewer and "desk top" on the secondary monitor.
    4. Toggle the browser to the right hand side of the expanded image, with the inspector on the right hand side of that.
    5. Stretch the view screen to cover both screens.
    6. Resize the bowser and the inspector to cover the right hand screen.
This now simulates "Browser Only" with mirrored second screen. As long as the "expanded image" is on the primary screen Aperture adjustment inspector works and the images are stable with full histograms.
Apple engineering implies that a dual mini display port card is in the works.

  • Is NVIDIA GeForce 6600 card compatible with OpenGL 2.0?

    Hi there -
Is my GeForce 6600 card compatible with openGL 2.0?
I have some software that tells me it is not and I've just spent lots of money buying it - I did make a quick check on-line before making my software purchase and found out that the whole 6000 series was compatible.
Reading again it says it has been OK for 2.1 from June 2006 onwards. I bought my Mac in May 2006
Can I install a new driver or something (almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about)?
If so is this something I can do or do I have to take my whole machine to the hospital?
I'm not that confident messing with too much technical stuff so treat me like an idiot ... please!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards - Deano

    Hi-
    Back from work......
BD has you going the right direction on RAM.
CS4 needs as much RAM as you can throw at it.
Buy only guaranteed Mac compatible RAM.
As for hard drive, getting a TB or so for storage is great, but you also need a fast scratch drive, separate from the system drive.
Improvements to hard drive technology have been made since the G5 was released, so replacing the system drive with a new one is a good idea.
For the fastest system drive, which helps overall performance, the Western Digital Velociraptor 300GB is an ideal candidate.
For more of a budget drive, but still fast, a WD6400AAKS 640GB drive is an overall winner, with fast read and write times, and all that capacity confined to two platters in the drive.
This is one of the keys to the drives performance prowess.
For scratch, you will have large files that are written, changed, erased, as filters, etc. are applied.
PS gobbles drive space even more than it eats RAM.
Again, the WD6400AAKS, or a WD1001FALS 1TB drive is what you should look at.
And when we talk scratch drives, I mean that it does nothing else.
    Not for file storage, etc.
File storage needs to be relegated to a third drive for system optimization.
To recap, a fast boot drive (OS and applications only), a scratch drive, and as many file storage drives as you need for multiple copies (min 2) of all work.
As for graphics card, yes there is improvement to be had, especially with regard to OpenGL support in CS4.
PS also leverages the GPU of the graphics card, so power is desired.
A Mac 7800GT, Radeon X1900 G5 Edition, or a flashed Geforce 7800GTX are the three top performing cards.
A Geforce FX4500 is also a possible candidate if your pockets are very deep.

Of the three cards, the 7800GTX is the top card, and is relatively easy to find. The 512MB version is the most desirable.
You will be looking on eBay for Mac compatible PCIe graphics cards in one of the flavors that I have named.

  • Looking for Nvidea GeForce 6600 OR Similar Graphics Card for Quad G5 PPC

    Hi there!
Wishing a Happy New Year to yo'all!
Was wondering whether someone might help me out with a minor issue I'm having...
I have recently acquired a Quad 2.5GHz PPC G5 (with PCIe). When I bought it, it came installed with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 graphics card, which works just fine. Heard these cards are very good for 3D rendering, etc...
However... As I am an audio engineer, I don't need a flashy graphics card... Instead I need "flashy" sound cards...
I have two PCIe UAD-2 Quad cards for all my UAD plugin needs within Logic Pro... And I have PCIe Symphony X card for my Apogee (AD16X & DA16X) front end sound conversion. All which sound and work very well... So far so good!
But here's the problem... My Quad PPC has 4 PCIe slots, which should be fine for my arrangement i.e. one slot for graphics card, one for PCIe Symphony card, two for UAD-2 Quad cards... BUT the damnable NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 takes up two PCIe slots!!!
I have looked on line to find out what the Quad 2.5GHz G5 PPC was originally supplied with: an Apple OEM Nvidea GeForce 6600. However these are rare and hard to come by now-a-days... And I can't wait forever till one pops up for sale.
So... Can anyone recommend to me a graphics card that will work in the Quad 2.5GHz G5 PPC... AND take up only one PCIe slot and be able to run a 30 inch DVI Apple display i.e. it needs two DVI ports???
I'd even do an out right swap for the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 and a good condition and working Apple OEM Nvidea GeForce 6600!? Heard this is more than a fair deal...
    Cheers in advance!

    Hi-
You can buy a Geforce 6600LE at We Love Macs. They aren't cheap, though.
This eBay seller has several of the 6600LE cards, at a much better price. The seller is very reliable (from experience) and carries the positive feedback to support my recommendation.
This 7800GT is also a good possibility. It takes only one slot, and provides much better performance than the 6600LE.
This flashed 7800GT is also an option. A flashed card is one that has the PC ROM replaced with Mac ROM. Again, this seller knows his stuff.....
As with the 6600LE, the 7800GT has a dual link DVI to support the 30" ACD.
After you get a replacement card, might try and get a few quid for the FX 4500 on eBay.
An original will sell better than the flashed models that are selling there.

  • GeForce 6600 LE and Aperture?

I'm about to receive a dual-core 2.0 GHz G5 and was thinking seriously of purchasing Aperture. However, I don't see this machine's stock graphics card (GeForce 6600 LE) among those supported on the Aperture page. Is this because the card is new and the requirements haven't been updated? If it is supported, does it work well enough with Aperture? Thanks.

Have just posted this on the G5-expansion forum... Hope it helps.
    Dear Finlaand
I may have a way through for you and others in the "shouldn't have bought the 6600" and tried to use Aperture.
After 1 month back and foward on the phone to Apple Australia, the best they could do was refer me to an Apple reseller, and order the 7800GT through their service department. $AU 1200 : ( - can you believe that price...
It arrived today! After instal, Aperture now runs with real time adjustments!!
I have had to use the 6600 to drive my second display as it didn't come with the little extension dongle to accomodate dual displays (the 2 DVI connectors are physically too close in the back of the card).
I now feel like I have a fast computer - instead of an expensive paperweight wrt Aperture.
    Hope this helps, Aron.

  • GeForce 7800 GT vs GeForce 6600

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me how much faster Aperture is on G5 dual-core with the GeForce 7800 GT compared to the standard GeForce 6600 on this machine?
    PM G5 dual core 2.3 6600   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I realize that this is a 7800 vs 6600, but just wanted to add......
A buddy of mine came over with his MBP (ATI X1600 video card) with Aperture installed. The sliders on the MBP were much smoother than my Quad (Nvidia 6600) as well as scrolling thumbnails. The Loupe tool also reacted better, but still had some lag time, although not as jerky as my Quad.
I have an .aplibrary on an external LaCie 500GB with FW 400/800. I connected it to my friends MBP (FW 400 only) and ran some tests with the Adjustments HUD and scrolling. I had 'Create new version with adjustment' checked in prefs.
On the MBP, there was a slight delay (very, very slight) when creating a new version (instantaneous with its internal HDD) due to the speed of the external drive. However, the adjustment sliders were still much smoother than using the same external drive on my Quad (connected with FW 800).
I could go on and on, but the point is this.....
The Nvidia 6600 is a DOG of a card with Aperture. It has since been removed from the spec sheet on this page....
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=8 D19F826&nplm=MA438Z%2FA
....and is only a minimum requirement on this page....
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs.html
Why it is on one page and not the other only Apple can tell us.
The better question is "What is Apple going to do?". There are many of us that bought the new Quad, when it was first announced, with the Nvidia 6600. We have been left out in the cold. We were given a spec sheet that was wrong and no we are told that there are, NO UPGRADES!!
In my order, the only other vidio card option was the $1650 Quadra card (too much). The Nvidia 7800 wasn't offered until after my Mac was shipped.
Aperture was in the same order with my Quad, so Apple knew what I was getting and why I was getting it (Photo work). Yet 6 months later, Apple has yet to contact any of us with this issue.
Yes, I tried customer relations. They offered me $60 off on a $200 purchase. Basically, spend $140 more in our store, STFU and go away.
Joe, thanks for the 1.1 update, but my $5300 system is a 'Pig' running Aperture as compared to my friends $2800 MBP. And my friend can take his computer out anywhere he goes!!

  • NVidia PNY GeForce 6600 AGP Flashing Issue (ROM says too large for EEPROM)

Here's a puzzle for anyone willing to assist (I've heard japamac has a good history with this sort of thing so *fingers crossed*).
So, I got a Quicksilver Power Mac G4 recently for free (gotta love the university just throwing stuff away) and it was the 800Mhz Single Core model. I've recently acquired a Sonnet 1GHz upgrade cpu nib from a thrift shop for $7 and also got my hands on a free and working PNY 6600 AGP card (256mb). I had recalled the 6600 having the ability to flash a mac rom so I thought it would be a sure thing, especially after having done similar build-up for my old Dual 500 Gigabit Ethernet machine, instead opting for an ATI 9600 and a 1.8 sonnet proc which I then sold for $180 bundled with Leopard.
I followed this tutorial (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2645959?start=0&tstart=0) and downloaded the latest nvflash and the rom image hosted on the site. According to windows the rom file is 32kb, and when I opened up nvflash it stated the rom already installed was around 64kb. I followed all instructions to a t and even opted to erase the eeprom as was suggested after backing up stock.rom.
So far so good...however when I try to flash the nvmac.rom file, I keep getting some error about a PCI board id not matching (having to override w/ yes) shortly before getting an error message that states that the .rom image is too large for the eeprom. How is this possible?
The card in question is a PNY GeForce 6600 256MB DDR DVI-VGA-TV AGP Video Card G606600ABD25T+BC4BCA
Am I just SOL because it actually is too large, or am I missing something here? I've re-flashed the stock.rom back onto the card and all works well on the windows front, but I was really hoping to have a mac 6600 on the cheap...any suggestions?
If you need any specific info, just ask. Will try to respond asap. Other than the rom size error message, every other step of that tutorial works just fine.

Unless I am missing something, the 6600 ROMs on the Mac Elite site all (3) show a 128 KB size. The 6600 PNY is listed as 128, and a download and check of the file confirms it.
If your cards ROM is 64 KB, you will need to solder a new, larger chip on the board.
Did you download a 6200 ROM?
