Dual 6500 and UCS

Hi all,
We have recently installed a UCS enviornment with 2 x 6100 units connected to our dual 6509 core. It is set up so that 2 x 10GigE uplinks connect from FAB-A to 6509-1 and 2 x 10GigE connect from FAB-B to 6509-2. Each of the 4 trunks to the 6509 enviorment are configured the same and truck the same 4 VLAN to FAB-A or FAB-B. We have 2 x UCS Chassis, each with 4 half-width servers. Each chassis has an A and B side, with 20GB going to FAB-A and 20GB going FAB-B.
The above UCS enviorment was installed by a 3rd party, while I configured the core-side of the links.
Our server team recently brought up a Windows server and I started seeing mac-flapping on one of our cores, between one of the 10GigE ports connected to FAB-A and the trunk link that exists between our 2 cores.
I'm a bit unsure about how, on the 6509 side, the ports should be configured.. I was told by the 3rd party that there is no 'active/standby' design, all of the trunks to each of the two 6100s are active 'all the time'. Our 6509 aren't running the VSS supervisors, just 'standard' sup720s running HSRP, with a trunk between the two.
I understand that more details is probably required, but I said i'd look into from a networking/core standpoint and the server guy is checking out his end, as as it stands he has the server in question connected to 2 vNICs, one on each of the 6100s, both 'up'.

Correct, Alan. With fabric failover, you can accomplish redundancy with only one vNIC and the server OS does not need to know about or manage anything to do with the failover. Brad has another post that goes into some detail on that.
http://bradhedlund.com/2010/09/23/cisco-ucs-fabric-failover/  With UCS in your environment, you will find his is a very good blog to follow.
You should make the vNIC primary on the fabric that is connected to the core which is the root bridge and has the primary HSRP or VRRP router interface of the VLAN the server is on and enable fabric failover. If the fabric fails and it goes out the other fabric to your other core, it will still be forwarded, but will have to cross the trunk between your cores to be routed.  Making sure that the primary fabric for any given vNIC matches the primary router & root bridge for the access VLAN assigned to it will minimize the traffic crossing the trunk between your cores.
There are other redundancy options beside fabric failover which can work better with VSS or in situations where you have equipment capable of virtual port channels. Likely your server team had the server configured to spread its traffic between two interfaces, one on each fabric, for load balancing and redundancy. This is not the best scenario for uplinking to your dual non-VSS 6500s.

  • Uplink ports on 6506E and UCS FI 6248's

Hello, I am trying to get my UCS on line with two uplink ports in an ether channel connected to a single 6506E switch with dup sup's.  I have FI-A in PO100 and FI-B in PO200 on the 6500 and FI's.
The problem I am having is that only one member of each port-channel will come up, I have swapped the TWIN-AX cables with not luck.  I have opened a TAC they suggested replacing the 10GB line card in the 6500. which I did this morning and still only one member of each channel will come up.  These are the port setting from 6506E side, if anybody can see a reason why they might not be configured correctly please let me know.

    Hello John,
Please SSH into UCS FI and provide output of following commands
    connect nxos a
    show port-channel summary
    show lacp system-identifier
    show lacp counters
    show tech-support lacp all | no-more
You can also share above information with TAC engineer . If could collect similar info from Cat 6K , that would also be helpful.
You can turn debugs on FI and bounce the port-channel and stop the debugs to further investigate the issue.
    connect nxos a
    debug lacp all

  • Dual display and VRAM usage.

Hi, back in the days I wanted a 12" iBook but couldn't afford one, last autumn thought I decided to get a Macbook Pro, the update came and...
    .. it had 128MB vram.
I want to use dual screen and maybe even occasional gaming, I couldn't decide if this where sufficient for my needs or not so I waited for the june update.
The mid-07 MBP arrived and, it had 128MB vram AGAIN!
Why oh why Apple? Oh, don't answer that, it's because you're in bed with Intel and want to force feed us useless highest end CPUs. But all I care for is the VRAM, why do I have to pay a ****-of-a-lot for a 1/11th faster CPU?
Anyway, I tried to decide if I should "bit the sour Apple" and get the mid modell or just get the low one because that one is much more price worthy. A few days ago I ordered the low end one.
But then I've seen on barefeats that he says that a 30" ACD display would use 128MB vram of the 256MB vram modell, are vram always splitted between displays in OS X?
You see, if the extra 20" 1680x1050 display only use 1680x1050x(3 or 4) bytes that is ok, maybe even if it's double buffered (is it?), because then I will probably have like 100MB vram left for all my windows and for desktop usage that is probably ok. But if the vram is shared between displays and my 20" which I will use most only get 64MB vram that's quite low.
I know I can turn of the sleeping capabilities of the MBP and shut the lid and only use one screen but that's a quite lame solution.
I hate how Apple does this, and it seems to worry a lot of people. Some get the more expensive modell and hate that they had to do it, some doesn't, and some don't buy a machine at all .. I would probably have stayed in the last crowd.
256MB vram can't have cost them many tens of dollars, why not have that in all modells? Why is the middle one even needed? Just make 2.4GHz CPU and option in that case.
Anyway, does anyone know how much vram my screen will have available? Will 128MB work for me with all the regular desktop apps I will have running? Or should I really go with the 256MB one? The tricky part is that my MBP might be shipped today or similair.
I've called Apple support three times but noone of them knows how this works so they aren't for much help.
(Dell vostro 1500 sells here in Sweden for less than half the price of the mid MBP and comes way more balanced, you can even get a 1680x1050 screen. Sure it has 2.0GHz CPUs or whatever but I don't care about that. Where is the old "omg MHz myth"-Apple? Please understand CPU speed isn't everything. Instead of leading the MHz myth fight it ;D, start calling the CPUs T7300 and so on aswell ;D)

Hi Johan, actually the VRAM used by OS X is likely to be quite a bit more than just your screen resolution multiplied by 3 or 4, since each open window is composited offscreen for the shadow effects and for things like zooming (Ctrl-Mousewheel) and the "Genie effect".
I'm pretty sure the total VRAM isn't divided in half for each of the two displays though, as it will be allocated from the video driver on an as-needed basis. In practice, with both displays active and a few windows open, you should still have maybe 80-90% of your VRAM available for applications.
Games and other VRAM-heavy applications are a special case as these will typically use as much VRAM as you can give them, and swap out to system RAM via the PCI-X bus when they need more (and unlike swapping to disk, swapping into VRAM from system RAM is still pretty fast).

We have two servers PI 7.1(dual stack) and PI 7.31(Single stack)
i did the development in ESR and my ESR is pointing to PI 7.1, when i execute the scenario i receive one error message "receiver could not be determined", i ensured that all my input is correct, still i get the same error message.
the expectation is my scenario should point to PI 7.31, Can some one help me where and what settings i need to make in-order to make it work.
Please Note: All my data is correct and i read some scn forums wherein they asked to refresh the cache , i have refreshed the cache also still the problem persists.

  • Thinkpad W520 with Minidock+ Series 3 - Dual monitors and USB fail sporadically

    Hello there,
I wonder if anyone has experienced problems ThinkPad W520 and Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (Part number: 433830U)? I run into problems with dual monitor and USB devices.
For dual monitor setup, sometimes only a single monitor is detected, sometimes no monitors are available in the NVidia control panel. Rigorous display detection doesn't help. Disabling Optimus in BIOS doesn't seem to affect it. After I dock and undock couple of times, reboot, unplug the power cord, it seems to resolve and both monitors work fine.
Also, I run into troubles with USB devices (keyboard/mouse). Sometimes they are not detected at all, but if I plug them into different USB ports on the mini dock, they are detected and work fine.
For me this problem happens about 50% of the time when I dock... Any ideas, insights or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Could it be a faulty Thinkpad, docking station or may be both? I really to upgrade next time to W530, but I've been through so many problems with W520, so I don't know if it's a good idea...
    Thanks so much.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If system update isn't finding anything, and the system works just fine on its own, it could potentially be a faulty Dock.
It could be overloaded.  Could you try testing the dock using just one monitor, and no keyboard or mouse, to see if you run into the same issue.  It would still be a faulty dock, but it may be a potential workaround for the time being.

  • Solaris 10 x86 w/ Matrox G450 dual head and xinerama

I have solaris 10 x86 with matrox g450 dual head and x.org x-server. The problem is to get xinerama work. When xinerama isn't enabled, two different desktops work well - or, they work, but they are pretty useless because I can't move windows between them. So, I have to enable xinerama, but it seems, that neither JDS/Gnome nor CDE haven't been built including support for xinerama.
When I enable xinerama, X.org-x-server starts fine and there's dtlogin. When I login and it passes execution to gnome, it fails and x-server restarts. Same with CDE. But if I put 'exec /opt/sfw/bin/xterm to my .dtprofile', it starts ok and I can do some testing..

If I start /opt/sfw/bin/fvwm2, it works fine too, so the problem seems to be gtk/glib/gnome and CDE. One odd thing is that, normal CDE-programs, like dtterm, dtcm, dtcalc etc. works fine. But dtwm doesn't work in xinerama mode.
So, would anyone have any suggestion what could I do? Do I have to recompile my own GNOME, or could Sun do something to the next Solaris 10 update? (As far as I understood, current Solaris 10 release doesn't include zfs yet, so there will be update soon, I think)

    Hello,
    I'm also using a g450.
Now I'm trying for 5 days to get it work with xinerama under Xorg and/or

Can anybody tell me how to get it work ?
I would like to see a working xorg.conf.
(I don't know how to configure 2 screens for Xsun. Mybe someone can give my his configuration file(s) ?)
Thanks to all who will help me !!!
p.s. here is my latest attempt of xorg.conf which does not provide xinerama for me:

  • Dual WAN and Log mail SMTP on RV082 ?

I use a RV082 with dual Wan and I cannot configure two SMTP.
Without authentication; a SMTP is specific of the provider.
When WAN1 comes down, SMTP to be used is the SMTP corresponding to WAN2 and vice versa.
Implementation of authentication with the mail server wil be useful.
Possibility of two mail servers with indication of the corresponding WAN is also useful.

I don't know how or if it's possible to set up two SMTP servers, but I know that may ISPs block SMTP traffic that is not directed to one of their SMTP servers.  You could try picking just one SMTP server, and find out if it can be conacted on a non-standard port.  A lot of SMTP providers allow for this.
If you can configure a single SMTP server on a non-standard port, you should be able to conatct that SMTP server from anywhere on the internet because the traffic won't be blocked (at least not port-based blocking, which is what most ISPs use).
So in a scenario where WAN1 is the ISP who owns the SMTP server and WAN2 is a diferent ISP that blocks standard SMTP traffic...
    1) If both WANs are working, SMTP traffic goes out WAN1.  No problem.
    2) If only WAN1 is working, SMTP traffic goes out WAN1.  No problem.
    3) If only WAN2 is working, SMTP traffic goes out WAN2, but is not blocked because it is on a non-standard port.  No problem.
    I hope that helps.

  • Are there any issues with MacPros+Dual Displays and FCP?

I have a MacPro (2.1) with an ATI X1900XT graphics card (2 DVI ports). It is currently hooked up to a single 24". My usage is mostly Browsing, Final Cut Suite and Video. I am planning on upgrading to Dual Displays (2*24" or 2*27") but read about some vague issues the ATI might have when using dual displays and FCP (Color more specifically). Are there any specific issues I should be aware of before getting a second display?
    Many thanks in advance

One graphics card? Two displays? ZERO ISSUES! Not sure what "vague issue the ATI" cards have, but I have that exact card, and run two 24" displays with no problems. I have run dual displays for years. I find working with one very...cramped.

  • Need videocard that supports dual monitors and Rotation -for PowerMac G5

I'm looking for a videocard that supports dual monitors and Rotation for PowerMac G5. I've got two Dell 2407WFP monitors rotated to 90 -I've been running an ATI Radeon X1900 256 pcie16 but apparently it is over heating -not even exactly sure if that indeed is the case but all the symptoms I've looked up online point to this problem. Anyways -just looking for a card that will do the job -I don't run games -this is just for work machine doing photoshop and related programs. Thanks for any help anyone may have!

    Hi-
A flashed card is a WinPC card that has been modified to accept a Mac ROM to provide for Mac compatibility.
Occasionally, soldering and other physical modifications are required.
Without this modification, a WinPC graphics card cannot be used in a MAc.
Without this modification, Mac users are limited to only a handful of used, OEM options.
The Geforce 7800 GS is the only 7800 card that may be used in a G5 (or G4).
The card must have been or be converted to Mac compatibility.
For dual monitors (DVI) the best performance choices are the Geforce 6800 Ultra (flashed or OEM), a rare, but occasionally available Geforce 6800 GT (flashed), an OEM Radeon X800XT (use ADC/DVI adapter on ADC port) a rare and expensive Radeon FireGL X800 (flashed).
These are the only performance oriented cards to offer dual digital display support.
For less demanding graphics work, an OEM Radeon 9650 offers dual digital output.
Other OEM graphics cards will have either DVI/DVI or ADC/DVI.
All OEM graphics cards are only available as used.
All cards are easiest to obtain on eBay.
Prices vary, but deals can be found.
Expect to pay $150-$325 for any of the cards listed.
Any card considered MUST be stated as Mac compatible, unless you are willing to research and learn how to perform the necessary modifications.
