Dual 867 and leopard

After completing an upgrade installation of Leopard
my g4 dual 867 will not shut down.
it says it will shut down but just hangs with a blue screen and the dial that turns for ever.

Every installation always has people here with issues. The question is can you prepare yourself following my FAQ*?
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
If you are prepared, yes, you can upgrade without issue.

  • Dual 867 vs. Single 1gig MDD

I have both systems and I'm wondering which would be a better to run Pro Tools 6.4?
The obvious says the dual to me, but with the difference bus speed, who really knows without testing.
The single seems faster when booted up, but again????
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these systems in audio production.

I have a dual 867 and I plan on using it for some serious audio projects once I get the right software. Now I'm using an old self-made PC, AMD 1333Mhz. I'm still using Win2K and that means I can't use any of the latest softwares with it (I'm cheap and Win2K was the last Windows OS that lets you use it on multiple computers without problems). I still produce a really decent sound and have yet to utilize even this older software to it's potential, I'm still learning new tricks (Sonar 3, Sound Forge 7, Mixtreme and more). The Mixtreme will work on the Mac too. My cousin is still using his Quicksilver Mac and makes some amazing music using DP4, Waves and more (he has ridiculous outboard gear, Radar,Studer 16 Track, large format console). I was hoping you've tried out both the MDD's now and could post some of your findings. I think the only difference is you'll be stuck using older software (they keep upping the requirements) and just have to wait a little longer for files to process. From what I've read the Single 1Ghz will be faster but That's only what I've read. Looks like you the man now!

  • Upgrading my G4 MDD dual 867 with Gigadesigns dual 1.33 upgrade; worth it?

I am updgrading my PowerMac G4 dual 867 and doing most of the usual; ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB AGP video card, more internal hard drives, still debating on SCSI hard drive; then maxing out memory at 2GB (missing anything else to upgrade?)
I am also considering on upgrading the processor to Gigadesigns dual 1.33 processor upgrade (btw, is this the only processor upgrade available for me?). First, is it worth it? Second, will this force me to change out my PC 2100 DDR SDRAM memory modules? Any other foreseen problems with upgrading to the dual 1.33 processor?
I am hoping to get a response from someone who has actually upgraded their MDD dual 867 with Gigadesigns processor and see what they have to say about it.

MDD upgrades were complex, challenging, and there are 6 different configurations and versions of MDDs out there. And the supply of 7455Bs may be a limiting factor.
If you need OS 9 or don't want a G5 (2.0's for $1699 making it affordable "upgrade") and $499 seems acceptable, and your applications will benefit, AND you don't need more than 2GB RAM (which is limiting also)...
The 9800 Radeon adds more heat and noise and $249 to costs, and the fan is loud but also can fail (poor designed product?).
yes for SATA 10K Raptor over SCSI! Less heat, fast, SATA cables are easy to use and don't cost $100 for good stuff.
But you want to spend how much? $1000 - 1200? a pair of Raptors or something? Seriously, get a G5 from Apple Specials. Your MDD can offset the cost later too.

  • Leopard Install on Quicksilver Dual 867 G4

I have just completed installing Leopard on my Quicksilver Dual 867 G4 and if an one else wants to try look out for the following:
[1] If you have a isub this causes chaos and needs to be
unplugged unfortunately (Check other posts for details)
Hopefully this may be cured in an update as even though the
the apple pro speakers are good I miss the isub
[2] Spotlight takes ages to index the drive and you are better off leaving the
machine alone while it indexes the drive due to the high CPU useage
(I had the activity monitor running to keep an eye on things during the
    indexing)
[3] Time Machine worked fine on an internal 200Gb drive although again its best
    to leave it over night
[4] My Iomega Rev 35 usb drive is read only. Hopefully Iomega will release an
    updated driver at some point.
Apart from the above everything is running fine and works very well even though
the Dual 867 is 5 years old. No speed issues which is not bad for a machine which meets the minimum spec!

I can't say for certain, but I've lurked around these forums for awhile, and I can say it seems you will be very unhappy with Logic 8. Why chance it? If 7 is working for you, stick with it, and use the $500 you would have spent on Logic Studio towards a newer computer that will let Logic be happy on it.
    Merry Christmas!

  • Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive

Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive

Yes as I said before. If your model Mac came with Snow Leopard and you are now running Mt Lion and have Windows installed in a Boot Camp Partition all you have to do is make the Mt Lion partition smaller, take the free space and make it another Mac partition and you should be able to install Snow Leopard into that partition.
I have Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion installed on my MBP. No Windows in a Boot Camp partition because I run Windows XP in a Virtual Machine on both Lion and Mt Lion.

  • Can I erase the boot camp partition and dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion instead

Can I erase the boot camp partition and dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion instead

Please don't double post. Look at your other thread.
If you want to get rid of Windows and the BC partition use the Boot Camp assistant program to remove the Win/BC partition. Don't do it manually with Disk Utility Use the BC A program.

  • DUAL 867 MDD AND HDV

Just wondering if anyone knew if my computer can handle HDV footage from a Canon XH-A1...Footage (HDV 1080p24) was able to be captured and brought in from camera itself (via firewire... ) but when i dropped clip into timeline video lagged a second behind audio...sequence settings are all correct..( no render bars at all ) also...clip plays perfect in quicktime player...captured footage onto external GRAID2 drive via firewie 800....ram is maxed out...i was always under the impression that i wasn't even able to capture HD footage at all according to FCP 5.1.4 specs ..to my surprise it did...any help from you people out there would be wonderful...

that was my next question to you..and again much thanx...i was always confused by the technical side...so my dual 867 is like having a 1.73 single processor...??? is that really correct...??? i was always looking for an answer to that....if so..KOOL...didn't realize that...FYI...i have exported HDV clip to DVCPRO HD in qucktime conversion and clip plays in sync now...still get drop frames from time to time..again much thanx for your quick responses

  • G4 MDD FW800 Dual Boot Tiger and Leopard

I have a Power Mac G4 1.25 Dual MDD FW800 currently running Tiger 10.4.9. I would like to install Leopard on a partition or a second hard drive so I can dual boot between Tiger and Leopard. Will the FW800 model allow this without eliminating Tiger or creating any issues with using Tiger? I recall reading somewhere that the MDD FW800 could not run Jaguar and Tiger concurrently but I don't know if this is true? Anyone running this Tiger-Leopard dual boot setup?
    Thanks Della

    Your MDD's are FW800 also?
What you are asking doesn't matter.
ALL G4 machines, including ALL MDD machines, including the FW800 CAN maintain two or more OS versions (such as Tiger and Leopard) and CAN boot back and forth between the versions.
Any G4 that I have ever had, Sawtooth to MDD/FW800 has run two, three and four OS versions.
I currently have OS9, Panther, Tiger and Leopard installed on this machine.
Another source had told me that the FW800 MDD could not boot back to a previous version OS once a newer version OS had been installed ie once Leopard was installed you could not boot from Tiger again from another startup disk?
Your source is incorrect, and is telling you contrary to all the content of the entire internet regarding the topic.
The FW800 cannot boot to OS 9 (any version) nor can it boot to OS X earlier than 10.2.3.
As with ANY G4, it cannot run OS X Snow Leopard (10.6).
    Those are the ONLY limitations.
ALL other OS versions after OS X 10.2.3, in any number of combinations, may be present as boot volumes on the machine.
If you had 4 drives with 3 OS versions each, as long as the version was within the machines compatibility, it would be fine and boot would be supported.

  • Can I share files between dual-boot Snow Leopard and Leopard partitions?

Apparently one of the cool new features of Snow Leopard is its file system compression. That has me wondering though, if I want to have a single drive with two partitions and install Snow Leopard on one partition and Leopard one the other will I be able to mount the SL partition from Leopard and read/edit files without causing problems?
It seems like that would not be possible but I thought I'd throw it out here to see if anyone has tried.

As far as I can tell, Apple has applied compression to most of the system executable files in Snow Leopard. However they do not appear to apply it to data files for any applications that I have looked at.
Apples documentation for ditto (go to terminal and type "man ditto" at the prompt, without the quotes) states:
    --hfsCompression
When copying files or extracting content from an archive, if the destination is an HFS+
volume that supports compression, all the content will be compressed if appropriate. >This
is only supported on Mac OS X 10.6 or later, and is only intended to be used in >installa-tion installation
tion and backup scenarios that involve system files. Since files using HFS+ compression
are not readable on versions of Mac OS X earlier than 10.6, this flag should not be >used
when dealing with non-system files or other user-generated content.

  • Powermac Dual 867 MHz Power PC and internal hard drive

    I was just sold a Samsung sp2514n internal hard drive- 250GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache.
The problem is that after I installed it- my computer would not boot up. All I got is a folder with a question mark.
When I took it out- it booted up normally.
Before I upgraded, I was told that it would work in my computer?
Is there something I'm not doing- that needs to be done- or is it incompatible with my computer?

  • 3rd party USB PCI card and Leopard

I installed a USB 2.0 Compusa Card in my Dual 867 Mac several Years ago, to get USB 2.0 speeds when i got a new Ipod. When 10.4, most t=of the time, early versions not included, I was unable to put the card computer to sleep and then be able to revive it. Leopard fixed that problem, but now the card is losing ports. It is a four port card, and the currently the two inner most ports are not working. The two outer ports are still working. I have had since prior to installing 10.5 my Iphone, Dock, A USB external Drive, for time machine, A USB hub, and my Keyboard attached to the USB 2.0 card. Now the drive disappeared and I am unable to retrieve. Anyone else having this Problem, has anyone had this problem and resolved it. Any help would be appreciated. I am contemplating a New PCI USb 2.0 card, but Not sure if it is the card or Leopard, as i have not had a any problems until 10.5 and 10.5.1 installations.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello.
I have a G4 Dual 1.42GHz (FW800) and an USB 2.0 PCI card (VIA chipset) and it also worked very fine under Tiger. Since this card is sold for the PC market it doesn't bring a driver for Mac OS X.
I went to the VIA site (http://www.via.com.tw/), there I could found they have another site with drivers for almost any OS. This is the address: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
Click on the Mac OS choice in the list and then in USB to get the driver. The driver version is 1.60 and it supports G4 systems ONLY and OS versions: MAC OS X 10.2.x, MAC OS X 10.3.x, MAC OS X 10.4.x. Nothing is said about MAC OS 10.5.x.
Unfortunately it doesn't work in my G4 with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). I also tried to use the USB 2.0 PCI card before installing the driver to see if Apple could have done a driver of its own, but it also didn't work.
If your card has a VIA chipset I recommend you write an e-mail to VIA Technologies, Inc. and tell your problem and ask for the update. I did it too.
I hope they can work it out soon.

  • Powermac G4 MDD Dual 867 vs Powermac G4 Single 1.0 FW800

Hello, I have been a mac user since 2004. I had an iMac G5 1.8 that crashed and I want a replacement for the next year until I can save for a Mac Pro. I saw a great deal for the above Powermac G4's: MDD Dual 867 for $200 and Single 1.0 FW800 for $150. My friend was going to give me his 23" Apple Cinema HD ADC. I will be doing email, internet, about 90% of the time, and sometimes use Photoshop and Lightroom the rest of the time. I will max out the RAM at 2.0Gb, upgrade the Video to 9700 or 9800, and install 10.5 Leopard. What do you guys think?

    C24, welcome to Apple Discussions.
A great price for both. Several considerations. Here's a link to the specs on both. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/index-powermac-g4.html
    1. Are you currently using OS 9 in classic mode. If so, you can use either Mac in Tiger. (same as your G5).
    2. Do you want to be able to boot into OS 9. Only the MDD will do this.
    3. The MDD Dual might be slightly faster if you use multiple applications at the same time and if you do extensive graphics/audio.
Unless you want to boot into OS 9, I would choose the 1GHz. Note: If you upgrade to Leopard, you won't be able to use classic mode.
     Cheers, Tom

  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb on Dual 867?

I have been reading up on doing an upgrade to my system. I was looking at a Mac version of the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb video card for it.
For this particular machine if I find a Mac version of the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, it will fit into the board won't it?
Also, I currently have the 64 mb ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. I should see a definite performance boost shouldn't I?
I am not a power user, and have 1 gig of memory on here, but since installing Ilife '08, it seems slower than it used to. I would like to move up to 10.5 and want to do what I can to make it run decently.

I'm using this card in my MDD Dual 867. First installed it with Panther and saw an improvement in some things. Nothing stellar for day to day work but it was noticeable. I then downloaded some game demos I was not able to play before (frame rates and all) and suddenly I could play them. It's worth it, especially when moving up to Tiger or Leopard with all that Core technology.

  • Dual 867 kernel panic problems, is it Power supply?

My 4 year ish old dual 867 is acting weird. Started when i installed leopard (prob coincidence though) the other week. It started kernel panicking every night as i normally leave it on, but also any time i left it alone for half an hour. If i left it writing a dvd overnight it wouldnt crash.
I installed on an other drive and didnt install anything but it still crashed, it took 3 attempts to get it to install from the cd as it crashed the first two (kernel panics).
I took it to the only mac store on the island. Very friendly but couldnt reproduce even one crash. Had it for 36 hours, ran tests, no probs, left it on for a while, no crash.
In talking to them it came up that it could be the power cable as id posted on another site the crash log and someone said it was the power supply as hed had the same.
The shop disagreed, but lent me a new cable. No crashes for 3 days. Solved!
Then i installed new ram to try to speed up football manager. Back to crashing every 20 mins. Checked the ram was in okay, and ran remer, memory was fine. Crashing stopped being regular but still intermittent. The guy on the other forum is adamant its the power supply from the crash log but i cant see what says that.
The monitor is an apple adc lcd monitor which has two usb ports that stopped working about 2 months ago.
This is one of the crash logs

  • Upgrading dual 867 MDD

Hey there, recently picked up an MDD Dual 867 G4 with 1GB RAM and an ATI 9000 64MB.
I'll get to the point, I'm going to be playing a few games with this machine as well as using it everyday as my main machine. Would i notice the performance difference from the ATI 9000 to a GeForce4 Ti 4600? I was able to track one down locally, I'll mainly be playing games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Ghost Recon etc. I assume an ATI 9800 would be overkill in this machine.
Also would an extra 512MB stick of RAM be use full or kind of redundant (topping it out at 1.5GB)?
    Thanks ahead of time.

    Douggo wrote:
The GeForce Ti is one of the better cards that you can drop in with having to flash a PC card or lay out big bucks for a new compatible AGP card. The 9800 is solid, especially the 256MB version. You couldn't really go wrong either way, running Tiger or Leopard..
Extra RAM is never going to hurt. No sense in letting a 512MB stick just lie around if it's doing nothing else. If you're buying new, drop the extra funds and up it to a 1GB chip - you won't regret it.

He'll regret it when he finds out that the dual 867 MDD only supports up to a 512 MB chip.
