Dual 867MHz Is now Dual 800MHz After Motherboard Replacement?

so i replaced the motherboard on my dual 867MHz G4.
the computer turns on now, and i did a fresh 10.4.11 install...but i noticed that it says "Dual 800" instead of "Dual 867" in my "About This Mac" now. i typed "sysctl hw.cpufrequency" in the terminal and discovered that it is actually running at 800MHz, and not 867MHz.
so why did i lose 67MHz with a new motherboard? it was the correct motherboard...any ideas?

G4 MDD Processor and bus speeds
There are two classes of Processors for the Mirrored Drive Doors G4 Macs, and they do not follow the main distinction between the products -- Firewire 400 Vs. Firewire 800.
In the Mirrored Drive Doors models, processor speed is determined by a combination of the jumpers on the processor modules and the Bus Speed of the system into which the processor is installed.
• Install a processor intended for a faster Bus speed into a system with a slower Bus speed, and it will be clocked slower and run slower than expected. 133/167 slower.
• Install a processor intended for a slower bus speed into a system with a faster Bus speed, and it will be clocked faster -- in most cases so fast that it will immediately crash.
133 MHz Bus speed:
867 MHz dual w 1 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 400 model
1.0 GHz single w 1 MB cache from Fw 800 model
167 MHz Bus speed:
1.0 GHz dual w 1 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 400 model
1.25 GHz dual w 2 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 400 model
1.25 GHz dual w 1 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 800 model
1.42 GHz dual w 2 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 800 model
1.25 GHz single w 1 MB cache from "education only" 2003 model

  • Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver: Near Perfect Installation

I installed the family pack on both my desktop G4 towers (Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver) and had almost ZERO problems.
I opted to upgrade my OS X 10.4.10 systems.
Both installations (upgrades) were without a problem, except for one minor keychain glitch:
MDD Dual 867mhz G4: After installation and restart, the keychain seemed to have forgotten my passwords for my POP email and my iChat (AIM) accounts. I simply cleared the keychain (as prompted) and re-entered the passwords (opted to save them) and all is well.
Quicksilver Dual 1ghz G4: No keychain issue. Passwords were retained just fine.
Every piece of email, settings, music, files, folders, apps, etc were all retained just fine on both computers.
All my Adobe CS2 suite apps, MS Apps are just fine.....as does my Final Cut Pro software.
The only software that "broke" was GOOGLE EARTH. I simply just downloaded the latest version and all is well again.
    Approx. Install time: 1hr.
Note: If your computer stalls on a blue screen (my computers did this on TIGER install), let them go. More than likely it's "finishing" the installation and probably cataloging the hard drive for Spotlight.
This Leopard OS Rocks! I can't wait til they fine tune it with a 10.5.1 update release

    I put Leopard on a Dual 800 and a Dual 400.
Leopard pushes the limits of the 400. The 800 runs pretty well.
I mean it is slower in some places, but I assume that will be fixed in updates.
(for instance... my cursor is sticking to links in firefox and it kills my CPU usage)
    Everything else works great.

  • Satellite M30: Power Saver options missing after motherboard replacement

    Hi all,
I've just received my laptop back from the service center, and unsurprisingly they stuffed up a feature that used to exist!
I had taken my laptop (M30 1.7GHz Special Edition) to the repair center for a defect and they informed me that the motherboard needed to be replaced. I received the laptop back a couple of days ago and I immediately noticed the laptop getting overheated, the fan did not turn on as frequently as it used to when setting the profile to "Full Power".
After hours of investigation, I noticed that a few options that used to exist in the Toshiba Power Saver does NOT exist anymore. Thus, I feel my laptop is running as in battery optimised even though it's set to full power.
As I said, the fan is not turning on as frequently, leading to the laptop getting overheated. While the fan used to be almost constantly ON on full power prior to the replacement of the motherboard.
Here's how the power saver used to look like "prior" to taking the laptop to the repair center:
    http://www.foxpop.com/imre/2006/toshibatecram3review/toshibapowersaver1.gif
And here's how the power saver looks like now, after the replacement of the motherboard:
    http://www.ixbt.com/portopc/toshiba-satellite/power.png
with the CPU processing speed maximum of 3, instead of 4.
Notice how I'm now missing the "CPU control method" option, and I'm unable to set the processing speed to more than level 3!
The cooling method does not seem maximum performance to me either, due to the symptoms I mentioned above.
Any idea on why that might have happend? Please note that I used the system recovery CD and returned everything to the factory settings, still no luck. I'm sick and tired of going back to their lousy repair center. If someone can point out the problem I will be very grateful.
P.S. I'm using version 7 of the power saver, BIOS verion 1.4 (original)
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
I wonder why you did not contact the service guys again.
After the reparation everything should works fine and if the notebook does not run properly you should immediately report it! In my opinion its a warranty claim.
However, in my knowledge after the motherboard replacement the micro code on the board must be updated therewith the CPU could run with full performance.
What CPU speed appears in the windows system?
Im not 100% sure if the missing microcode update is responsible for your problem but I would recommend asking the ASP for opinion.

  • Problems after motherboard replacement

    Hello,
My PXI system consists of PXI-1045, PXI-8360 and five NI PXI intruments (5152, 4065, 6552, 2532, 5404). I was working with this system without problems for a long time. However, the motherboard of my PC had a specific problem with the ethernet connenction and I decided to replace the motherboard with a new one (same model). After the replacement (the pc finally was fully functional), I tried to power on the PXI chassis, but  I couldn't "see" any module in PXI chassism, using
the MAX. I must tell thatI didn't change the hard disk of the pc, or anything else just the motherboard. After some experiments, I finally fix the probrem with the following solution: First I unplugged all the modules from PXI chassis. After that, I plugged one module and I reboot the pc. After that I plugged the second one module and I reboot the pc. And so on...
This was the only solution that I found in order to indentify all the modules of the PXI chassis.
My question is why happend this thing? Where are the PXI modules' adresses stored? Also, is the procedure I used correct, or I had to do something else in order to make the system work?

    Hello George,
you might want to consider posting this question in a more hardware based forum - the problem does not seem to be related to CVI.
    Good luck

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with recovery on my Qosmio F10. It won't boot from the CD, I get a message 'media test failure check cable'.
I tried everything I could find here about this problem with no result. Then I read somewhere on this forum that recovery cd wouldn't work if the laptop has been serviced and has a new motherboard. This is excatly the case.
I had a new motherboard and CD/DVD drive put some time ago.
How do I make it work again?
    A.

    > Then I read somewhere on this forum that recovery cd wouldn't work if the laptop has been serviced and has a new motherboard. This is exactly the case.
Who has replaced the motherboard? The ASP?
Well, usually the Recovery CD should works after the motherboard replacement.
I presume the parts were replaced with exactly the same parts and therefore there shouldnt be a conflict between the Recovery CD and the new motherboard.
Did you try to boot from another bootable CDs like Win XP or Linux? Check this!

  • G580 Core i5 processor show 2 cores after motherboard replacement

I got the motherboard on my G580 - Core i5 3rd generation replaced yesterday, everything seems to be working perfectly fine except that my Core i5 CPU is now showing 2x cores instead of 4x.
what migh be the issue here??
    see, Before:
    and After:
is it an internal issue? or did someone scam me here??
    how do i solve it?
    My system details:
    Lenovo G580,
    Core i5 3rd Gen, 4gb DDR3 RAM and 750GB HDD
    OS: Ubuntu 14.04 64bit

nah nah, this is completely normal,
your G580's i5-3210M is actually a dual core with Hyper threading enabled, which means that the CPU will have 4 threads aka it can process 4 things at one time, undercover you have 2 physical cores, so this is completely normal nothing to worry about

  • T40 sound not working after motherboard replaced....bad sound card?

    Hello,
I recently brought back to life my old t40 2373-75U by switching out the motherboard (it would no longer charge batteries) with a used R51 1830 motherboard (which I believe was a recommended upgrade by someone on this site).
Anyways, long story short - I have the gently used motherboard now installed and the machine is up and running with my old T40 hard drive.  I also have XP-SP3 installed on it, and just had to make a few minor driver updates...everything seems to be working great, EXCEPT I have no sound.
I have tried everything I can think of:
    Software:
-un-installing and re-installing the audio driver several times
-installing the 2004 version of the hotkey driver (the 2013 version did not work with my system) because the Access IBM and volume buttons were not working and I thought that might be the culprit
-I believe I updated the BIOS drivers, but not sure if I "flashed" it...admittedly, I don't even know how to do that.
    Hardware:
-the hardware in device manager shows that it's working properly
-I've performed the "test hardware" function through the control panel/device manager and it shows a signal with my USB "test" microphone going in and a signal coming out, but still no sound is actually coming out
-lastly, I've tried connecting external speakers to the headphones jack and still nothing..
At this point, all I can think is that the sound card is bad.
Would you agree with this assessment or am I forgetting something?
    Thanks for your help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm not familiar with Linux Mint as I have been a Fedora guy for a long time, but since LM7 was
released in 2009, all audio drivers should be present for your machine. But, as I said, that could
    be different for LM.
But you shouldn't have to do anything further regarding codecs or anything else, and since the Soundmax
uninstallation also removed the device as well, then it should be completely reset in the OS. Alas, is there
anything from Via in Control Panel - Add/Remove programs? If so, you should remove that before proceeding.
The driver for your machine is here:
    Audio driver for Windows XP
And if you already installed this version, the driver can be found @ C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO
I did some rummaging through various forums today in regards to your issue, and found this one,
a couple of R51 users chime in there too.
    http://forums.windrivers.com/printthread.php?t=73987&pp=40
and in the above link, a user found a solution by following the advise in this post:
    http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/audio-drivers-not-found.14328/#post-184512
But instead of getting the drivers mentioned there, you could point to the installation location I
    posted above.
One thing they mention in these threads, is running
    sfc /scannow
in a command prompt, which checks your OS for essential system files, but for XP you'll
almost certainly need the Windows XP installation media.
Finally, here is another thread on audio issues for a R51 user:

  • Won't Turn On After Motherboard Replacement

a bad cable fried the FW ports in my PowerMac G4 MDD, which caused all kinds of problems. so i got a new motherboard from ebay and put it in. installation went smoothly, but now the computer won't turn on. when i press the power button, the light flashes for a moment, but nothing happens.
i've triple checked to be sure i connected everything properly. i guess there is a chance that the motherboard from ebay is bad, but the guy said it was in perfect working condition.
so what should i check? any help is appreciated. thanks!

i discovered that it powered up with no battery...so i swapped out the battery for another, and it still didn't work. but on a hunch, i went and bought a brand new battery and put it in, and it worked. not sure why, because of the two batteries i tried, one was brand new already...hey, whatever. it took three batteries, but it's seems to be up and running again.

  • Qosmio F10: What to do with the Update Tool CD after motherboard replacement?

    Hi, Hoping someone can help.
My F10 has had three new mother boards since the first one broke down. Fortunately I had paid for the extended warranty. However, when it came back this time they had formatted my hard drive because they changed the chip set. Now it can't find a TV signal and the FN Keys dont work. They sent me new CD Roms entitled "Update Tool" and "Qosmio Player Update", but they don't do anything to help the problem. Anybody got any ideas or does it need to got back again?
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

Ok, I think the engineer will install everything again and will make an update.
By the way; I think the bundled Qosmio Update Tool CD is a booting CD and its necessary to boot up from this CD to install the proper system drivers for the new hardware components.
The complete update process will take about ten minutes. Follow the on-screen
    instructions.
After approximately 5 minutes, the copy process is complete. The message
The media will update software, please do not remove it. Hit any key to Shutdown
is displayed. Press any key to shutdown. Turn on the power of the computer and follow the on-screen instructions.
The Update Tool CD for Qosmio screen then appears and the process of updating the software begins. This can take approximately 5 minutes and the
    computer will reboot to complete.
The Qosmio Player Update only works if the Qosmio Player was installed on the HDD.
This is true for original Toshiba image installation.
Note: Do not install the Player if it's missing!
    - Boot the PC with the QosmioPlayer update CD.
    - Select desired language with allow key and press the Enter key.
    - Select desired Country/Region Code and Keyboard Code with allow key and press the Enter key.
    - Follow the on-screen instructions

  • Pavilion DM4 doesn't start after motherboard replacement

My wife accidentally left her Pavilion DM4 in our RV with the roof vents open during a recent storm. Not surprisingly, it didn't survive the watering. We shipped it to the Best Buy service center for assessment and they claimed that the motherboard is fried and that they couldn't order a spare one anymore because "the model is too old."  I ordered one on eBay that was supposedly pulled from a working unit and swapped it myself (transferring the old processor to the new motherboard). Unfortunately - despite all the drumrolls I was able to simulate - it didn't wake up after surgery.  The HP logo on the back of the display, the orange LED on the f12 key (Wifi antenna logo), as well as the green LED built into the power button all blink in 3s intervals.
There is a white LED next to the power plug and if I put the battery in that LED turns orange. So it seems like the power supply works and is charging the battery, right?
    What else could it be?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Dear Mrstenter, thanks much for your response!  I tried a master reset, as well as reseating the memory and HDD - no change. There is no audible noise of any kind (no beeping, no fan, no HDD spinning). And unfortunately the blinking I'm experiencing doesn't match any of the error codes listed in that document. It just keeps blinking briefly every 3 seconds and doesn't stop.I left it plugged in and the orange battery charging light had changed to white when I checked it after a couple of hours. So I think the power supply and battery charging unit is working. If it was a problem with the display connector I'd think that the blinking wouldn't be as persistent and I'd hear the HDD spinning up.  But as it stands it seems like it just doesn't come to live at all.   The motherboard came from a vendor who prides themselves with "no DOA" policy and they claim it came out of a new laptop (which sounds strange, but it actually looked fairly new).  But of course nobody can guarantee that (I'll try to return it if I can't get it to run).  My biggest concern is whether the processor is still intact.  Is it possible that it died too during the water damage? Does anyone know what the continued blinking means? Thanks,Martin

  • MBP after motherboard replacement can't install anything

    Hi guys,
I'll address to you an issue that a friend of mine has.
He recently replaced his motherboard (mbp 13").
This work was done not by apple but by a repair shop ( I know I know he didn't followed my advice lol)
    The problem is this:
Can't install OS X not from his original CD (says that's not the right computer) not from a drive, pen etc.
Folders can't be moved (permissions issues)
can't save anything on the HD or update or install software.
I've tried my best to help him.
Seem to me that somehow even if the motherboard is the right one (same model) doesn't "see" him anymore as the owner.
Tried to reset NVRAM etc but nothing has changed.
Some of you might have some similar experience or advice?
    thanks

Did you fix it? I am dealing with the same problem now!

  • Reactivating Windows 8 after motherboard replacement

I have a client with an HP Pavilion 15-e020us Notebook. The motherboard has died and needs to be replaced. It is, of course, out of warranty.
