Dual Band or not?

How do I know which model numbers are dual band and which are not when buying a used Airport Extreme? I am looking at one identified as APPLE MB053LL/A and the seller says it is dual band but I am getting conflicting reports. Thanks,
Rich

Welcome, Rich.
Easy to see how things can be confusing here.
The MB053LL/A is dual band, but not a "simultaneous" dual band model. It can create a wireless network either at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, but not both at the same time.
The newer models are "simultaneous" dual band versions, which means that they can create both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks simultaneously. In addition, these models include a "Guest" network feature, which is also a "dual band" network if enabled.

  • New MacBook (Aluminum), new Time Capsule (Dual-Band), backups not working

My Mom got a new (refurbished) 13.3" MacBook (Aluminum) and new (not refurbished) Time Capsule 500 GB (Dual-Band.) The Time Capsule is working great for wireless internet and we can copy files to and from it, but Time Machine backups are not working. I enabled Time Machine, selected her TC, and then when it tries to backup it sits at the preparing stage for a little while and then gives a very unhelpful "the backup failed" message. Unfortunately I don't have the exact error message, but it never gets out of the preparing phase. It doesn't stay in preparing forever, it only stays there for a minute or so before it gives up and reports the backup failed message and stops. It's unclear to me, searching these forums, if this problem is the same as others are reporting.
I've tried turning off Time Machine and back on, removing and reselecting the Time Capsule, etc. Nothing makes a difference. There are no backup files on the TC - it's brand new.
This happened out of the box, but I also tried installing the latest Time Capsule firmware. It didn't help.

Apple needs to create a configuration tool that configures all the Apple devices one owns by creating a network diagram using drag and drop symbols...
Sounds like a cool suggestion. If you want Apple to hear it, go to www.apple.com/feedback/timecapsule.html

  • How to find out whether my extreme is dual band or not?

    Hi,
I just bought an airport extreme through ebay. how do i find out if it is the new dual band version or not??
    the serial number is: 6f804069yex
    Thank you
    Santo

Model A1143 is the earlier (introduced in January 2007) model that is NOT dual band. It can only operate in one or the other at a time. Sorry!

  • Is my Time Capsule dual-band or not?

Back in January 2009, I bought my first Mac (MacBook) and a Time Capsule. Getting hooked on Macs, I now also own a iMac and consider myself a Mac Lover.
    I have one question though.
Some days after I got my Time Capsule, I read the announcement of the dual-band Time Capsules (2.4 and 5 GHz). How on earth do I know if my Time Capsule supports both networks or not?
In Airport Utility I can select 2.4 or 5 GHz wireless, but I do not see a way to select both. I would be interested in maintaining two networks inside the house, one in 2.4 GHz for the iPhone and the other one in 5 GHz for the iMac and the MacBook.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the seemingly stupid question, but in Apple's literature the new Time Capsule is noted as "Early 2009". And since I got mine very ... early, I thought I would ask.
Thanks for your time, much appreciated.

  • I have an older version of the airport extreme, can i still set it up to be a dual band router like the newer versions?

Wondering if an airport extreme router that I bought back in 2009 will function as a dual band router, similar to the newer versions.  I wish to run my mac off of the lesser Ghz and the periphery devices off of the other(ipad, iphone).  I also have an apple tV, is this possible?

The 2009 model extremes are simultaneous dual band (but the 2007 model was not - it was dual band, but not simultaneous).  Your problem is that I know of no way to force a given device onto a given bandwidth on an extreme.  Both channels share the same SSID, and a device simple connects via whichever frequency it gets the best connection.
This is unlike other simultaneous dual band wifi routers.  I use a netgear wndr4500 (n900), and each radio is assigned a different SSID (and can also be configured independently in terms of security settings, and even turned on or off indepentently).  That way, I can force a given dual-band device to connect on a particular frequency by connecting it to that frequency's SSID.  The two SSIDs still function over the same subnet, so all 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz connected devices can see eachother on the same DHCP subnet.
But, I do not think you can set up an airport extreme like that - that sort of configuration is simply not an option with those devices.

  • Time Capsule dual band version

How can i understood if Time capsule 1 Tb is new version (dual band) or not?
    I can't open the box!!
    TKS

If you can see the box, the new one is clearly marked "dual band". If you don't see this clearly, you are looking at the older version of the Time Capsule.

  • MBP will not access n on TC Dual Band. Firmware 7.4.1 doesn't work either.

    So maybe I'm missing something.
I have the Time Capsule dual band. Brand new. An Apple Care replacement of my original Time Capsule (non dual band). 1 TB versions.
Replaced because I can't access the 5ghz band from my MacBook Pro.
    MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.8.3
    Current Wireless Network: xxxx
    Wireless Channel: 11
I currently have the TC set with Radio Mode 802.11a/n-802.11g only. My MBP will only join the g side. I know this because holding down the Option key and looking at the Airport Menu icon shows I'm on channel 11 at Transmit Rate of 54.
In Airport Utility under Airport/Wireless/Wireless Options I have also allow the 5ghz network name to be shown.
I my Airport Menu if I select this 5ghz network I'm asked for the password. I type in the password and get connection timed out. All the time.
    Now the interesting part:
The TC has firmware 7.4. If I upgrade it to 7.4.1 my computer will not even see the Time Capsule at all. I have to do a hard restart of the TC and immediately downgrade the Firmware back to 7.4.
    Interesting part number two is:
I have an original Airport Extreme. The first release of the n Airport. If I try and use this unit at 5ghz also, my MBP will get the same Connection Timeout. But the MBP will work on n band at 2.4ghz. BThis running firmware 7.3.6 ( I think that is it). IF I upgrade this unit to 7.4.1? Again I will not even be able to see the Airport on my MBP. Again I have to down grade the unit to 7.3.6 after a hard restart.
So for me the 7.4.1 update is not workable. And Apple replaced my original TC twice with the same results. I returned them and they sent me the newest TC. And as stated above, the same results.
So 7.4.1 doesn't work at all for me.
    5ghz n band doesn't work for me.
Any ideas? I'm assuming my Airport Card in the MBP is defective at this stage. It can't access 5ghz, And working on sending out the computer for check up to Apple. Or a Genius Bar visit.
Anyone else having n access on their computers? And the 7.4.1 Firmware?

Update to my post above- this is SO weird
If I manually select channel 40 on the 5ghz band, I can access 5ghz. I do not get the Connection Timeout. I on it right now.
Before I manually selected channel 40 the TC was in channel 149.
Does this mean anything? Now I'm not sure if the Airport Card in my MBP is defective or not.

  • Wired Apple TV3 not seeing 2.4GHz on dual band router

I have an iPhone 4 that will not airplay to my apple TV. The iPhone 4 operates on my 2.4GHz band of my dual band router (netgear WNDR3700) The SSID for 2.4 is network and the 5ghz is network-5GHz. Am I to believe that these both must be the same name for the Apple TV to see it? I don't understand why it has issues since my ATV is wired and not using wireless and my 2 iPhone 5, and iPad 2 have no issues AirPlaying. (all on 5GHz) Shouldn't the fact that it is wired mean that it should see any device on my network? I have searched the forums and have not really found and issue like this, so I do apologize if there is one out there that I did not see.
Thanks for any help, this is really bugging me.
    Casey

Alos I just switched my iPhone 5 to 2.4GHz and it worked. Looks like it might be just an issue with my iPhone 4. Weird....

  • Dual band wireless 2.4 and 5 ghz not supported

well first off i cant believe this 2013 model that cost 800.00 doesn't support both radio 2.4 ghz frequency and 5.0 frequency for media. i bought a dual band router that creates 2 networks one for email and internet and the other for media. i dont know what to do because it will not get the download speed i buy 200mbps. only about 100mbps. The wireless network adapter and wireless frequency of 5.0 needs to be installed in this computer. I am so frustrated with all the media out there and technology dual band routers have been around for 5 years or so. so why did hp neglect to incorporate what the routers aare doing. I have my 2 smart tvs, blueray player, cell phone, and laptop part of only one network that does not include video. and i am supposed to have a working nertwork. thats a joke and a big problem thanks to hp. does anyone know what i need to do to this pc to get the 5.0ghz band frequency come out of this computer and i guess i need a new wireless network adapter that accommodates  both frequencies. but heres the problem everything is housed in the monitor because it is an all in one. at least the old towers you could open and get a picture of what was inside the tower and what was available to add to to the empty spaces or slots. i am not going to be able to open this up and install a chip for the network adapter and hardware to send and receive a 5.0 frequency and all the channels that go with it. any advice

ii appreciate your reply but routers started wireless connections using dual band about 5 years ago andd if its so cheap to get then hp should have the technology as well. the computer manufacturers know about this technology long before it actually comes out so probably about 2008 hp already knew about thee dual band wifi connection and they probably were instrumental in getting the 5.0 frequency because it supports media and has not been used as much as 2.4ghz. they just didnt want to spend the money or time to install the necessary hardware and software to keep the frequencies from conflicting and screwing up the channels putting out the data and video. that would involve additional software and hardware to keep static and channel conflicts from causing data and video interference. I will contact hp and ask when will they have the dual frequency wifi hardware adapters and software available on there computers and can i get it installed in this one

  • AP dual band not configurable

    Hi,
I read about the dual band AP extreme's ability to use the 5ghz signal. Well, I can't leave well enough alone and just had to try it out. Now I can't even get inside it again. It keeps giving me the error message "can not find..." All of my settings have been reset to default. I have even tried using an ethernet cable to do a manual setup. This won't work either. So I don't have my WPA settings, the password is "public", etc.
So I tried resetting the account settings, and that did nothing except give me all default account settings. Is there any other possibility?

    Curious1 wrote:
here's the exact quote "AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device."
Additional info: In the AP utility, upper LH corner, I see a blue background, a picture of the extreme and a amber dot, indicating it's on line? It gives the default name as "Base Station xxxxxx" (where x = the hex MAC address)
The utility will run, then sticks in a loop, endless spinning circle icon. Next to it is this: "Reading the Airport Extreme configuration..."
And this is also the case when you use an Ethernet cable connected to a computer with its Ethernet port enabled?
As for resetting the account: I logged in as a single user and removed Library Preferences, Users and Apple setup. This brought me back to a "virgin" log in. I did this as a last measure to remove any previous system settings in the hope I could resuscitate the AP. This didn't work.
I didn't realize you meant a user account on a computer. I wouldn't expect that help.
The AP has 2 MAC addresses? is that correct? One is for the 5ghz and the other for 2.4ghz?
A dual-band AirPort actually has three MAC addresses, one for each Wi-Fi radio band and one the Ethernet WAN port.
So, I guess the proper question would be is there another method for zeroing out the AP other than holding down the reset button?
Not that I'm aware of. If the AirPort unit has a name of "Base Station xxxxxx", if it was fully configured at one point with a non-default name, then it's already been reset as much as it can be.

  • Time Capsule disk access SLOW!   2TB - Dual band

I have a Time Capsule (2TB, Dual Band, Firmare at 7.4.2)
Its been working like a dream, backing up 3 Macs for the last 8 months.
I also use it for connecting two or three other disks via USB and then making those accessible over the LAN, and there is also about 100GB of data on the Time capsule disk itself that i use as a dump for files so i can get to them from anywhere on my LAN.
Lately I started to notice EXTREMELY slow disk access, even when i am connected via ethernet (1000 base) - and equally when I am connected via wifi (n)
for example, copying over a 2Mb photo can take minutes when it should take seconds.
i've been trying to figure out whats going on here for a while and so i checked out the sizes of the backup files.. the sparseimages that time machine creates.
one of them was nearly 1TB, while another was around 500GB and the other was around 120GB
that plus my data meant there was only about 300GB free on the 2TB disk.
I have a feeling the slowness could be down to extreme fragmentation of the drive... ??
so i decided to dump the backup files and copy off my other data and do a erase of the disk and start again.. but get this.. i can't even delete the 1TB file ! I have been trying for about 3 days now and it just will not delete.. i get the Deleting msg box and it just sits there, literally ALL night...
i know it isn't just hanging on the Mac (10.6.4) because deleting the other two images also took a long time (but not this long!)
i can't just wipe the disk now because i can't get my other data off either.. I have tried copying it over the network and onto a USB disk connected directly to the Time Capsule, but 3 days later and i'm still copying files..
to put some context into this, I copied over 1.8Gb today and it took about 4 hours...
has anyone had this problem before?? what on earth is going on?? is it down to fragmentation, or something else?? the TC has been working fine up until a few weeks ago when i started to notice slow speed.
    any ideas ?
    thanks
    Adam

if anyone ever has this issue ....
it must have been EXTREME fragmentation. I bought another 2TB external disk, connected it to the TC, did a complete archive, which took around 24 hours... then i wiped the TC and put stuff back... it now works fine again...

  • How do I use the remote app on a dual band network?

There are 2 routers in my home. One is dual band (SSID: NETGEAR49-5G). This one is being used as a 5GHz access point while the other (SSID: NETGEAR49) is being used as a 2.4GHz extender. However I can't use the Remote app to control my iTunes library, regardless of which router I connect to. I can't even use a passcode to add my library because I just keep getting an error saying I entered the wrong code. Strangely everything's fine if I turn off the 2.4GHz router, but I don't want to have to keep doing that. Is there any way I can configure the two routers so I can use the Remote app and other network-based services??

    Hi,
I can tell you how it works on my iPhone.
I click the Messages icon to open it.
I click the box with pencil icon top right for New Message
I start to type the name of the person I want to contact in the "To" spot.
(Alternatively use the Blue + icon and select direct from Contacts list)
I select the full name of Contact from any list if there are multiples.
Once the person and their Contact option is selected I click on the text field at the bottom of screen
Using the "keyboard" I type the Message and then  the Send button.

  • Dual-band wireless question

Hi again: I am new to this dual-band wireless stuff in TC having just replaced my AE with a new TC. I have a few questions regarding wireless setup.
    1. When selecting the "Radio Mode" you are presented with options like "802.11a/n - 802.11b/g". Does this setting mean that the primary wireless will be a/n wile the guest wireless will be restricted to b/g ?
    2. If you Option-click on the Radio-Mode pick list you can select multiple other settings. On of which is 802.11n (5 ghz) - 802.11a/b. Give question 1 does this restrict the main wireless to 5 ghz n only? (I highly doubt this as I can still connect to the "n network" with my iphone which only supports b/g.)
    3. Under "Wireless Options" you can select a "5 ghz" network. Is this different than the option detailed in Question 2?
    4. Finally, where can I find a manual for TC ?
    Thanks for the help, Chris.

So is my assumption that the hyphen in the selection is the differentiation between the two networks?
Also, when I activate the "5 ghz" setting under options I actually see three networks, "Network1 (5 Ghz), Network1, and Network2 in my naming system. Does this mean that Network1 (5 Ghz) in the N only while Network1 is a standard N (with backwards compatibility to b/g)? I think this is the case as my iPhone does connect to Network1 while Network1 (5 Ghz) is not detected.
    Thanks for the help, Chris.

  • How can I get Wireless N 5MHZ Capabilities Dual Band up to 300MHZ on my DV7 Laptop?

How can I get Wireless N 5MHZ Capabilities Dual Band up to 300MHZ on my DV7 Laptop?
    Question for 4/18 experts ...
Or specifically, how can I replace my wireless card on a DV7-6B32US and upgrade to Intel Centrino 6230?
I have a relatively new DV7-6B32US puchased on 11/2011.  Still under warranty. purchased 2 of the laptops. (also own 3 hp desktops and 1 HP All in One)
Existing card is wireless N but does not support 5GHZ or dual band.  It is Broadcom 4313 wifi card and I am just realizing that the Broadcom card does not do the dual band  5GHZ wireless N.   I have Linksys e4200 router which supports 5GHZ and dual band speeds up to 300 Mbps.
I called tech support and with their help identified Intel Centrino 6230 as the correct upgrade, and with their help ordered 631956-001.  In the Maintenance Manual for DV7 laptop, this part number was listed for Intel Centrino 6230.  Turns out HP sends an Intel Wireless N 1030 card, which is no better than my existing card.   I called HP and they acknowledged that some manuals use part number 631956-001 for Centrino 6230 and some use 631956-001 for INtel 1030.  So HP support said they would give refund but case manager was of no help in solving the upgrade problem.  Said it was unavailable but here is your money back.
So after more searching, I see others have used part number 636672-001 to order Intel Centrino 6230, specifically for HP ProBook 4530s, 4230s, 4730s.   And if I use part number 636672-001 and go thru parts store at HP, I can purchase it.
    But will it work??
First, will the Intel Centrino 6230 with part number 636672-001 from HP parts,  work in my HP DV7-6B32US, even though the part number is NOT listed in the Maintenance and Service Guide for my specific  laptop.  I see postings about whitelists and changing bios, etc, and am hoping someone can provide some guidance.   I have been thru 2 tech support calls and one case manager and have gotten 3 different feedback from HP, from yes it will work and ordering the part, to buy it on amazon, to it will not work and here is your money back.
Second, I see some postings about Centrino 6230 and multiple antenna's.  When I replaced the Broadcom 4313 with the Intel 1030 card, I simply unattached 2 wires and reattached the wires.  And it worked.   I am wondering if the reason HP doesn't list the 6230 card for DV7 is that DV7 does not have the antennas required to support 6230.   Does the Centrino 6230 require 3 antennas?
Thanks for any suggestions.  The existing cards do work but I paid extra for the Linksys e4200 Router and just assumed a winter 2011 $700 laptop from HP would use the latest wireless n technology, otherwise I would just keep existing cards.

I have went thru the exact same problems trying to upgrade the wireless card in my DV7.  It is very frustrating that the wireless card can't be upgrade to one that supports 5Ghz.  Here is my post from the network forum. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Wireless-Internet-Home/Unsupported-Wireless-LAN-6230/td-p/1419595 Doesn't sound like it is possible to upgrade to the Centrino 6230 without it being added the the "white list".  Sound like HP doesn't update the list after shipping the notebook. I feel your pain. HP needs to help out the consumer in upgrading the wireless cards.  I see we are not the only ones that have had this problem.
