Dual Boot 2 Drives

I am trying to dual boot arch and windows on 2 different drives. I just installed arch on a 120gb ssd. I also have a 1tb hard drive that has windows on it. What I want to do is just switch between them in the boot menu. The problem I am having is that when I boot to the ssd nothing happens. When I boot to the hard drive I get the bootloader, which has arch on it. However if I boot to windows I get an error. I am using an asus maximus IV.

I'm no expert (so double-check what I'm about to say!) but...
It sounds like your PC was set up to boot Windows, then you installed Arch but replaced the MBR on the hard drive so it points to the Arch bootloader instead of the Windows one.
What I would try is to install GRUB (to boot Arch) on the MBR of the SSD -- see this link:

Then re-install the Windows MBR on the hard drive. In Windows XP, you do that by booting into the Recovery Console and running the fixmbr command. In Vista and 7 you have to use bootrec.exe -- see here:

Then you just need to set the PC to boot from the SSD, and add the Windows option to GRUB by editing
/boot/grub/menu.lst.

Dual boot drive - Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard - Correct order to load software /apps?

Hi
I want to create a dual boot drive for Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard as some of my hardware (is not supported in Mountain Lion).
I am happy how to do this, I just want to know if there is a correct way to install software and apps.
My plan was to do a clean install of both using two partitions, the larger going to ML and smaller one for SL. I was going to install SL from the DVD and then after updating from 10.6. to 10.6.8 and download ML from the app store and install on the larger partition.
Do I install all the software I use like Final Cut, Aperture, iLife (for Garageband) etc on the ML or SL partition or on both. Also, is there a better way / practise of the order software updates / apps and boxed software should be installed when doing a clean machine install.

So, if I have software I need to use on both ML and SL - for example Final Cut as I have a Canopus AVDC box which is not supported in ML but only SL, do I need to install the same software in both OS?
I usually open apps using spotlight and didn't know if it would software / apps would open if already installed on the other partition?

Cloning a dual boot drive

I hear the click of death coming from my HDD and am ready to replace it with a shiny new 0.5TB drive. Cloning the OS X partition over to an external drive and then cloning it back has been well covered here but I haven't seen mention of how to handle a dual booted machine.
Can the same tools (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) be used to clone the Windows partition as well? If not can I use DiskUtility to manage the transfer? Should I format the whole new drive as Mac OS Extended Journaled at first then go back and create a FAT32 partition to copy over the WIN image?
I have some old useful software on the WIN side that would be really difficult to find and install again and I'd rather not have to go through the trouble and for the same reason I don't want to go corrupting the WIN image with the wrong tools.

reason for this is, that I don't have my external HD connected all the time and also that restoring from the internal HD is faster than from the external.
I start the SuperDuper cloning not on a regular basis, but rather before system updates and the like.

Why not? Make a folder in your media partition and put an alias folder (shortcut) on the desktop of each partition/ OS. You can right click on the folder in the media partition and click on "make alias".
If you want to direct your iTunes media to point to the media partition, google "move iTunes library to external disk" and follow the steps; the instructions should be the same for a seperate partition as it is for an external drive.

Can i take a a hard drive from a windows computer, enclosure it and use it on my mac as a dual boot?

I would like to take a hard drive from my old Windows computer which already has Windows 7 installed an use it on my mac as a dual boot. How would i go around doing this so i could keep all the files i already within this hard drive? I have the hard in an enclosure so i just need to know how i could use on my iMac, If anyone could take the time to get back to this i would appreciate it, Thanks!

Macbook Pro - 2 Hard Drives - Dual Boot OS OSX + Windows

Hello guys, I've been facing an issue here
I bought an SSD 2 years ago and changed the original MBP HD. I did a fresh install of OSX while still having my optical drive. Everything is fine with the OSX installation.
Recently I bought an enclosure and installed the original MBP HD drive into the optical drive slot. Now i have two HD's on my MBP (Early 2011 - Unibody Model)
The configuration for the Hard Drives is as follows:
SSD Drive - disk 0 - OS X Running fine
HD Drive - disk 1 - clean formatted to accommodate Windows 7 installation
I started the BootCamp Utility formated the second hard drive to install windows from bootable USB. Everything works fine until the point where the Windows installation actually expands the files. I always get the same error, that windows cannot be installed on that drive and any changes will be reverted back to original settings.
Several hours after researching the whole thing this is what I've got:
The error that I am getting is for the configuration of the drives, a fix to this problem is to take out my SSD, install the old HD in its original position, install windows normally, put my SSD back in its position and put the old HD in the optical drive and thus I will have the Dual Boot of two OS in two different HD's. That's really really awful as I have to take appart again the whole thing and swap between the drives till the process is finished. This is because The EFI boot + Windows to be installed require the disk that windows to be installed to be on main slot - disk 0.
My question here is, is there any fix to the BootCamp assistant to let me install windows on the hard drive that it is located on the disk 1 position?
Moreover is there any way to install windows through the environment of OSX with the use of a VM, but, the windows to be a bootable OS rather than a VM bootable image? (on disk 1 - optical drive SATA port). - What I mean by that is, while running OS X normally on disk 0 run a VM software that will mimic the environment of a bootloader so that I can install windows on disk 1, but after I shut down my computer, windows should be accessible on disk 1 as a normal installed OS.

You can install Parallels or Fusion, either will work. When you setup either Parallels or fusion you can tell it to use your already installed Boot Camp installation of Windows as its target guest operating system.
You would then just boot into OSx, start your VM (Parallels or Fusion), then you'll have access to both OSx and Windows without having to reboot.
I have this setup and two monitors. I have my Windows running on my external monitor and OSx running on my Macbook Pro monitor at the same time.
Beware that you will need to re-register Windows to get a second key. This is free and easily done either online or by calling the Microsoft registration number. The reason for needing a second key is that Windows, although only installed once in your Boot Camp partition sees the virtual hardware created by your virtual machine and thinks it has been reinstalled on a new computer.

Purchasing a new Boot drive for Power PC Mac dual G5 2.7 GHz ( early 2005)

As I’ve mentioned I have Power MAC Dual G5 2,7 GHz( early 2005)
I’m doing “ erase and install” on my boot drive Caviar and starting from the scratch - Basically doing whole new setup with my music apps,sample libraries and back up.
To describe it little better - My plan is to move Caviar to second slot ( mostly will be used for I-tunes,documents,photos and maybe some back up) and purchase new boot drive.
All my audio and music samples I’m running from 4 bay ( sata ) exterior hot swap enclosure with Lycom card so my boot drive will be clearly for OS X and applications.
Now - I’ve gone through a big research and even though I have not really make up my mind about my purchase - here is what I’ve found out so far.
As a boot drive I’ve been considering following ( I’m adding my comments as well)
1) My first pick was Hitachi T7K500 320GB SATA II HD 16MB Cache -
seemed to me like a very good choice for a boot drive since it has a great random access .But after reading review in “ AMUG reviews “ Using a Hitachi T7K500 320GB with a Mac Pro I was not that sure .Apparently They don’t recommend Hitachi T7K500 for internal Mac Pro usage since it is slower without using SATA host adapter. But that is Mac Pro - I have Dual processor so it might be different?
Second choice was
2) Maxtor MaXLine III 500GB or Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500 GB
here I’m not sure -some guys don’t really recommend this brand but in bunch of online reviews I’ve read it was mentioned as a very good choice for a boot drive .
I’ve been told that this drive is too noisy and too cheap which I think is not a bad thing though.
And finally
3) Raptor 74 GB or 150 GB
Everyone knows those drives are fast
Downside is that size is not very big ( just my OS X will be around 50 GB)
plus 150 Gig won’t work natively on my G5 without host card which would be another extra expense .
Maybe one more thing to add - I have not consider neither seagate drives (since random access speed is not that great) nor pairing any of those previously mentioned drives into raid 0 configuration .
So basically that is my selection.I’m trying to pick up drive which would work natively without PCI - X card and would be reliable and fast.( Only if I would have no choice - Than I would probably buy a host card )
Also I’m not sure whether for example in the case of hitachi ( or even other brands ) would be smarter to go with bigger size - maybe 400 or 500 GB for a boot since all drives getting slower as they get filled up.
I would really appreciate if anyone can give me a feedback as far as what drive would be the best choice in my case.

Only follow these steps, it works for my:
Open "System Information" and note your "Boot ROM Version" (some like MBP51.007E.B06)
Navigate to "Utilities" in Finder and open the package contents of -BootCampAssistant.app- with right click. Duplicate the "Info.plist" file to the Desktop e.g. and open that with Text Editor.
You must locate the keys "DARequiredROMVersions"and "USBBootSupportedModels"
Add new strings with the information of your machine under booth keys (step 1), always respect the format, such as: <string>MBP51.007E.B06</string> for the frist key and <string>MBP51</string> for the second key.
Save changes and replace the original plist file (it may ask you to enter admin pass)
If you proceeded correctly you will see the checkbox "Create a Windows 7 USB install disk" enabled in Boot Camp Assistant.
Then you can follow the usual Boot Camp installation using your WIN8 DVD iso image . The assistant program will proceed resizing your disk partition and installing necessary drivers for your iMac.
I strongly recomends you to use thirld party's bootloaders like rEFInd (rEFIt) because of the Apple SMC versions of some old machines should not be able to boot properly from external devices like USB drives.

How to install Arch for dual-boot with Win 7 (on 2 hard drives)?

the TLDR first: how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for 2 hard drives to dual-boot Arch (64 bit)and Win 7 (64 bit)?
Long version: So, I have the following hard drive & partition layout:
On my first hard drive (250 GB big) I have: Win 7 64 bit, all the programs for Windows and of course the EFI partition
My second hard drive is 1 TB big and formatted in NTFS and it only contains data. It has 2 partitions, one is about 750 GB big and used for simple storage.
Sidenote 1: sometimes my disk management (Windows' own gparted) shows either the little disk or the big one as disk 0. Don't know what exactly this means, but I have never ever experienced any problems whatsoever during use.
Sidenote 2: the UEFI motherboard (ASRock H67M) cannot boot into Legacy mode.
I want to install Arch on a ~200 GB partition on the second hard drive (the one with 1 TB). (click here if you want to see a screenshot) I am posting this because I am confused with how exactly I should deal with the whole "2 hdds & UEFI" thing.
So how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for this setup?
For partitioning I suppose I would have to use fdisk or cgdisk. I used cgdisk before and found it to be straightforward. Then, because I have experienced my fair share of problems with rEFInd, I'd like to use GRUB.

This will probably help you out in understanding the sidenote 1 thingie (hdd's on sata3 and/or sata2 connectors)
As on sidenote 2, according to the manual it seems to be possible to boot legacy mode, see Storage Configuration.

W8.1/W7-64 dual boot, dual drive (SSD & SATA) GPT/MBR problems

I'm posting in both the W8 and W7 forums because I'm not sure which is more appropriate.
Setup:
New Dell XPS8700 with Windows 8.1 installed on a 256GB SSD drive. I upgraded to W8.1 Pro.
2nd drive is a 2TB SATA.
Goal:
Keep W8.1 Pro on SSD.
Install W7 Ultimate 64 (legal copy, installation disk) on SATA Drive.
Select which one I want at boot.
Main Issue
Cannot easily choose which OS to log into. See Dual Boot Problems and Current State for details.
Background: W7 Installation Probems
1. I disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS and Fast Startup in Windows 8.1
2. I created 3 partitions (D, E, F) on the SATA drive (a GPT drive)
3. Used the Advanced Option in W8 to boot from the DVD (absurd),
4. Windows 7 started setup from the DVD but at the initial screen (Language, Country), it hung. Hard. No keyboard, no mouse. Had to turn off computer.
5. Using F12, selected legacy boot from DVD. Now the installation got beyond the first screen. I selected Custom Install. When I tried to install to the E: partition, I got the message that W7 could not be installed on a GPT drive. From
a lot of research and reading, I'm guessing this is because I chose a legacy boot. But, please, note: the only reason I did a legacy boot was because I could not get past the first screen with a "normal" CD/DVD boot,
6. So, I went back into W8, deleted the volumes on the SATA drive, changed it to MBR, recreated the volumes.
7. Using F12, again selected legacy boot from DVD and was able to install W7 on the E: partition, except that every reboot during the installation process got me back into W8, so I had to restart with the F12 option/legacy boot to finish W7 installation.
8. Finally got W7 installed. Logged in. OK so far.
Dual Boot Problems
1. No boot menu. Computer booted directly into W8.1. And, yes, Fast Startup in W8.1 still disabled.
2. Downloaded and installed EasyBCD. Created boot menu for W8.1 and W7 with W8.1 the default.
3. Reboot, select W8. Fine, I'm into W8.1
4. Reboot, select W7. All I get is one bar of hieroglyphics across top of screen. Hard freeze. Had to unplug computer.
5. Do an F12 reboot and select legacy boot from the SATA drive. Get a different boot menu with Windows 7 on top and W8 Media version below. Select W7. It loads and I log in.
6. Do an F12 reboot and select legacy boot from the SATA drive. This time, select W8. Get an error that it can't find W8.
Current State
1. The default boot into W8 works fine.
2. Can't get into W7 unless I do an F12 legacy boot from SATA at startup.
3. If I do an F12 legacy boot from SATA, I can't get into W8.
I do not want to rely on F12 for 2 reasons: first, I want W7 to be my default working enviroment. Please do not try to convince me that there is no good reason for that. I want to do this, have legal, paid for copies of W7 (actually, I now have four.)
Second, it will make installing W7 updates nightmarish since I'll have go go through the whole F12 thing for every reboot.
I am assuming that the problem stems from the original GPT/MBR split (with the SSD being GPT and the SATA being MBR) - although I could be wrong. And, remember, the only reason I changed the SATA from GPT to MBR was because the W7 setup froze
at the initial screen when I first tried to install W7 with a normal boot from DVD.
Things I've tried:
1. Via W8, got to a command prompt where I ran bootsect.exe /scanos. The result was that it found NO Windows Installations. Obviously incorrect.
2. Uninstalled EasyBCD from W8.
3. Rebooted. Same boot menu as before: W8.1 on top, Windows 7 below (as I had set things up in EasyBCD).
2. Via W8 Command Prompt did a bcdboot c:\windows to try to get GUI boot menu. Got the error message: failure when attemptng to copy boot files.
What I want to do seems to me to be quite simple: run W8 from the SSD, run W7 from the SATA. It's my understanding that I should be able to install W7 on a GPT drive and that would, I am hoping,
solve the boot menu problem. But see Installation Problems above: I couldn't do the default boot from the DVD and install W7 because it froze at the first screen. Is there some other way to get past the freeze and install W7 to a GPT?
I've been working on this for two weeks now, have read more articles, watched more YouTube videos than I care to list. Need Help Desperately.

SOLUTION:
The problem I described above stemmed from the fact that I had been unable to install W7 without using the legacy option. (The W7 installation would freeze at the first screen.) That created the boot incompatibilities between W8.1 and W7because I had
to use legacy for the latter but not for the former.
It turned out that the USB ports were the basic problem. The Windows 7 installation program doesn't recognize USB 3.0 ports. Unfortunately, the A08 BIOS in the XPS 8700 -Special Edition (as of late Dec. 2014) has only 3 options for enabling/disabling
the USB ports: Front, Top, Back. The back panel has a mix of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports and I needed a 2.0 port for the mouse and keyboard to work. However, disabling the Front and Top USB ports was sufficient. The W7 install no longer froze.
So, from my W8 installation, I wiped out the SATA drive, changed it back to GPT, partitioned it, disabled the Front and Top USB ports in the BIOS and booted from the W7 DVD. The installation went fine. After installing the network driver, downloaded
previously, and updating W7, I installed the USB 3.0 drivers and then re-enabled the Top and Front in the BIOS.
So, now the EasyBCD boot options work just fine. Both drives are GPT. No legacy options.

[SOLVED] Dual boot windows 7 and arch Linux with seperate hard drives

Ok so I'm stuck trying to get my computer to dual boot windows 7 and arch. They are installed on different hard drives and I have grub 2 as the boot loader. I can't find any tutorials on how to do it with seperate hard drives I know how to do it if they are on the same hard drive. Also I want windows on the "first" hard drive how do I check to see which one it considers the first?

Not from the BIOS. He would need to physically open up the computer and switch the cables between them (or add another drive).
There's no actual performance increase in changing this order. You may be right about that. I remember I had to do this a while back but I probably switched the cables. It also messed up the drive mapping in Windows 98 if I remember correctly.

Dual boot Windows 7 and Arch from 2 seperate drives (UEFI)

Hello everyone, I've been working on installing Arch to a secondary hard drive for the past few hours, but I am trying to make sure I won't mess up my Windows 7 install. I have found several topics talking about dual booting Windows 7 and Arch, but not a whole lot on booting them from separate drives. My drives are currently setup as follows.
sda (120GB SSD for Windows 7)
sda1 (100MB System Reserved NTFS partition)
sda2 (Windows 7 install)
sdb (1TB HDD for Windows programs, files, etc)
sdb1 (1TB NTFS partition)
sdc (1TB HDD)
sdc1 (boot 512MB FAT32)
sdc2 (root 500MB ext4)
sdc3 (home 300GB ext4)
sdc4 (swap 10GB)
rest unallocated "free space"
I used Gparted to create the partitions. I ended up getting hung up on the "Create Filesystems" sections, specifically this line"
# mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sdXY
Now that I am looking at it, I'm thinking the "Create Filesystems" section maybe isn't necessary because I've used Gparted?
If it isn't necessary, when I get to the "mount the EFI System Partition to /boot" section, would I simply use
# mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/boot
instead of
# mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/boot ?
The way I had this setup with Ubuntu was 3 partitions on sdc (/, home, swap) and I set my PC to boot to the sdc drive on startup. The boot loader would then give me the option to boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7, and I never had to alter the sda or sdb drives at all. Is this possible through Arch? My thinking is that even if it isn't, I should still be able to enter the BIOS boot menu and select which drive to boot manually correct? That wouldn't be too big of a deal for me because I spend 90% of my time in Linux, and only use Windows for Photoshop and gaming occasionally.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I would have just tested this out, but I am afraid of messing up my Windows install.

After several sleepless hours I had to give up and go to bed about 5 hours ago. The installation process went smoothly (or so I thought). I followed the tutorial closely and upon rebooting I was met with a blinking cursor. After some googling I found others who said I should press TAB, but nothing seemed to work.
I rebooted to the iso disk and found the "boot installed OS" option and noticed it said "Press TAB to edit". I then found the boot parameters and tried everything from hd0 0 to hd4 4. I believe I have Grub setup correctly because every option besides hd0 0 either says "Booting..." and then gets stuck, or says "That disk and partition combination does not exist". So yea, I think hd0 0 is the correct boot path, it just gets stuck with the blinking cursor.

Thank you for the link. Considering I can't get into my install and the actual install only took about 30 minutes, I think I am going to just start from the beginning again with REFIndr. It seems much simpler. I only used Grub because I've used it before with Ubuntu, but my very limited knowledge is telling me Grub is probably the problem.

Dual booting Windows 7 and Vista on dv9620 on dual hard drives

Hi this might look like a repeat question but i haven't seen it answered by anyone that has tried it.
I downloaded the release candidate of Windows 7 and i want to dual boot it on my notebook.
The drives I have available are Disc0 which holds C: (the drive running Vista) and E: the HP_Recovery partition.
Then I have Disc1 which holds D: the Data drive and nothing else.
I want to run Windows 7 on the D: drive So can anyone who has done this tell me how they did it? Most of the dual booting how to's I've seen are for for booting on seperate partitions a single hard drive and because i'm something of a novice to this I would like some advice with more reference to my situation.

You can probably finagle the partitions to allow for dual boot: copy the contents of D: to C: and delete D:, for instance. Speculating, since I don't have an IdeaPad to test on. You usually/probably/maybe lose the OneKey Recovery feature if you touch the partitions.
Others here on the Linux board may have been able to preserve OKR, but I'll leave that to them to describe since I haven't done it.
Long way of leading up to the question: is it sufficient to run Linux in a virtual machine, or as a WUBI install within windows? That keeps things simple and makes backups much easier as well.
Whatever you do, burn your recovery media first. Now.

[SOLVED] How to dual boot windows on separate drive with syslinux

I'm trying to follow the directions from the arch syslinux wiki to add a windows dual boot option to my current syslinux.
I have two hard drives: sda (windows MBR) and sdc (arch linux GPT). My BIOS is set to boot sdc, and syslinux is currently installed fine to boot arch linux off of sdc. I would like to add an entry to boot windows.
I added an entry to /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg that looks like
LABEL windows
MENU LABEL Windows
COM32 chain.c32
APPEND mbr:0xf00f1fd3 # my actual identifier for sda from fdisk is here
When I rebooted, I saw the new entry in the syslinux menu. When I went to arch linux, it booted fine. When I rebooted again and selected windows, it hung with a blinking underscore. The next time I rebooted, it didn't even get to the syslinux menu and just hung with a blinking underscore.
I booted from my rescue arch usb drive. In fdisk, sdc's partition table now mirrored sda's! In other words, it looked like I had windows partitions on my linux drive, and it had the same MBR identifier even though it was supposed to be GPT. I ran gdisk /dev/sdc, it detected both GPT and MBR, and I asked it to use the GPT table and wrote out the partitions, and my drive looked normal again. I ran arch-chroot, syslinux-install_update, and everything was fine the next time I booted.
Any advice on how I can set up windows dual boot with syslinux?

I am assuming that you use Bios and not UEFI (I am not that quite familiar with UEFI).
1) You must configure the Bios to boot from the disk where syslinux is installed, having a correct mbr and with syslinux correctly installed.
2) The disk where windows reside must be bootable by itself with a valid mbr.
It may be possible that windows try to boot from the linux disk (and of course fails), try to add the swap option to the chain command.
To check if Windows is correctly installed, try to boot it directly from the Bios.
The mbr of the syslinux disk should be gptmbr.bin:
dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/gptmbr.bin of=/dev/sd<letter of the linux disk> bs=440 count=1
Warning: Be very careful with what you do with dd, it is very easy to destroy all your data!

Dual Booting with second hard drive

Okay so I just ordered an enclosure to replace my optical drive with my old HDD. I have already put an SSD where the old HDD was and I could really use some more storage space for video projects. Also, I want to dual boot Ubuntu on this machine. I am wondering what the best way to go about that would be for performance. Should I make a scond partition on the SSD or use the HDD that I am putting in the optical drive bay for Ubuntu? And how can I use the extra HDD space to store data from both operating systems? Any help is greatly appreciated.

It seems that I have run into a problem. After doing a little more reading, it looks like mavericks will not allow me to dual boot. Also, a clarification to an earlier post I do NOT want to run virtual machine. Could I get around this problem by doing what you, LowLuster, suggested at first. Putting Ubuntu on the second drive by replacing the disk drive and installing that way, then putting bot drives into the machine? Also, the hard drive I am putting in place of the disk drive is 750Gb. I do not need 750Gb of space for Ubuntu. Is there a way to use the rest of that hard drive as storage for Mac OS?

Dual boot Mac OS X and Arch: Arch installer cannot find CD drive?

Hi, everyone! A friend convinced me to install Arch about a month ago on my desktop and I've loved it so much that I want to dual boot Mac OS X and Arch on my Macbook Pro 7.1.
So I have a Macbook Pro 7.1. I have partitioned the drive in Mac OS X and installed rEFIt. I have the Arch x86_64 disk which I know works because I installed Arch on another computer.
When I boot from CD I get the familiar Arch screen with options "Boot Arch Linux, existing OS... etc." I click boot Arch, and it starts to load. However, it says "Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201005 ... ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt. /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off."
After searching around the forums, some people said they had similar problems attempting to install via USB. I used "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" and my CD drive does not show up in ramfs.. What can I do to install this amazing OS on my MB Pro 7.1?

Solved! sledgehammer and MrE (sorry, I can't spell it) in IRC helped me out. I had to download a newer iso that offers better Mac hardware support. 2010-12 iso
