Dual Boot OS/Win 7

I just installed the Windows 7 Pro into the MacBook Air (Early 2014).
I had try to create another partition for my File/Data storage, unfortunately after restart and boot into Windows 7, the screen show not bootable device.
Anyone here got solution to do this or not?
My target is create 3 partition
1.) OS X Yosemite
2.) Windows 7 Pro
3.) Data/File

you didn't read the instructions in boot camp assistant which is what is designed to setup the partitions.
and yours is exactly why you should make sure you can boot into Mountain Lion Recovery and / or from TimeMachine.
Those will get you back on the right track.
As for creating multiple Windows partitions.... not supported. May be able to.

Help - How to install Win XP in dual boot with Win 7 (first installed)?

Hi everybody!
I'm having some difficult in install a win xp in dual boot with win 7 (which came with the G550 notebook).
I modified the D: (Lenovo) partition to a primary partition to install the XP. Also I installed the EasyBCD to manange the boots and both S.O. load fine.
The problem is that Win XP is seeing a partition (the first partition on disk) with 200MB that is hidden for Win 7 ! So this partition takes the C: letter in XP and mess all the configuration once that many programs uses the C: as a default letter.
The disk is divided in (aprox):
200 MB hidden partition (from factory)
160GB with Win 7 installed
40GB with Win XP installed
19GB hidden partition (Recovery - from factory)
Is anyone has some idea who to solve this problem or make install XP from the beginning without problems?

How to install Arch for dual-boot with Win 7 (on 2 hard drives)?

Hello,
the TLDR first: how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for 2 hard drives to dual-boot Arch (64 bit)and Win 7 (64 bit)?
Long version: So, I have the following hard drive & partition layout:
On my first hard drive (250 GB big) I have: Win 7 64 bit, all the programs for Windows and of course the EFI partition
My second hard drive is 1 TB big and formatted in NTFS and it only contains data. It has 2 partitions, one is about 750 GB big and used for simple storage.
Sidenote 1: sometimes my disk management (Windows' own gparted) shows either the little disk or the big one as disk 0. Don't know what exactly this means, but I have never ever experienced any problems whatsoever during use.
Sidenote 2: the UEFI motherboard (ASRock H67M) cannot boot into Legacy mode.
I want to install Arch on a ~200 GB partition on the second hard drive (the one with 1 TB). (click here if you want to see a screenshot) I am posting this because I am confused with how exactly I should deal with the whole "2 hdds & UEFI" thing.
So how exactly should I proceed when setting up GRUB for this setup?
For partitioning I suppose I would have to use fdisk or cgdisk. I used cgdisk before and found it to be straightforward. Then, because I have experienced my fair share of problems with rEFInd, I'd like to use GRUB.

This will probably help you out in understanding the sidenote 1 thingie (hdd's on sata3 and/or sata2 connectors)
As on sidenote 2, according to the manual it seems to be possible to boot legacy mode, see Storage Configuration.

Dual boot - Installing Win 8 on a preinstalled Win 7

I just puchased a Toshiba Satellite C55-A5195 Windows 7 preinstalled. But I would like to dual boot it installing Windows
8. Can I do that without messing the whole system? I know that I have to create a partition to install Win 8.

Thanks for your feedback, but I don't think your issue is the same as the one I previously explained.
The UEFI/secure boot setting is a basic configuration affecting the way the PC boots, regardless of whether it is connected to a network or not.
By the way, in the meantime I've seen in a shop exactly the same PC model which I'm using, now sold with Win 8 pre-installed, and it was working with the UEFI enabled (= BIOS "legacy support" disabled).
Therefore, the configuration I'm interested in has to be feasible, one way or another...!

IdeaPad Y570 - hybrid drive dual-boot ? ( Win 7 + Debian )

Hello, I've tried to find specific information but none was found so I've made this topic.
My question is.
Is it possible to dualboot on Y570 with hybrid drive (SSD 32GB + 750GB HDD)?
I've have my Windows 7 already installed and used. I have 2 partitions - C (the biggest 690GB - Win installed + data) and D (from lenovo - drivers, utilities...)
I haven't change any setting with partitions.
I would love to split the biggest drive C into 2 smallers - one with Win 7 another with Debian installed.
I prefer NOT to install Win 7 again. I just want to create new partition, install Debian on it and have dual-boot system. I don't need One Key recovery system.
Another question is, how will the SSD work with Debian? If not, I can live through that, but I would prefer if it works at least for Win 7, just like now.
I've read that Optimus is not working under Linux. Okay, no problem, but can the external graphic card be disabled at least in Linux?
To sum up, my goal is to have Linux without formating drive / without reinstalling Win 7. Is it even possible?

The unit was preinstalled with Win 8 64bit right?
Changing the BIOS setting from UEFI to CSM and disabling the secure boot prevent the notebook from booting the Win 8!
Therefore the unit cannot find the bootable device and switches to last option: LAN.
But since the notebook cannot find bootable system via LAN, the error PXE-E61: Media test faliure, check cable appears.
If you want to use a dual boot, you have to boot into Win 8
In Win 8 you have to create an partition for Linux installation. This can be down in Win 8 disk management. You have to shrink an last partition and have to create new one on the available free space.
Now to start the Linux installation you need an media.. you can burn the Linux iso on DVD or an bootable USB stick. There are many details in internet how to create such media.
Once you have created the bootable USB, restart your PC with connected USB.
Press F12 to get the boot menu. Now you should see the USB memory stick (if bootable!!!) choose USB and you should be able to install Linux (Ubuntu is great!)

How to dual boot my Win 7 with win 10

Hi, I am leery about installing Win 10 without some way to get my pc in a workable state in case the Win 10 install fails. So I thought I would try to set up my laptop to have a dual boot of my existing Win 7 machine with the new Win 10 install. Does anyone know if this can be done and still get the free Win 10 OS? Can someone direct me to any documentation that can provide instructions on how to go about performing this endeavor? Something that is fairly explicit - I've never done this kind of thing before. Hello everybody,
I'm new to this amazing project as I installed Arch just two days ago (and everything works like a charm in linux).
Anyway I have a problem and I'm very sorry to bother you with another question such this, but I tried everything and I accurately read the wiki.
The problem is that I can't manage to create a dual boot in grub with Arch on the first sata disk and Windows 7 on the second disk.
Before trying Arch I used ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with the same Windows 7 on the same secondary disk (the pc is a dell XPS L702X 17' laptop with, of course, dual disk bay) using GRUB2 which was automatically installed during ubuntu installation.
I tried to chainload windows disk in grub using map command to let windows think it's on the primary disk and not on second one.
At start I just had "BOOTMGR missing" error, then I put windows disk as primary removing arch disk and I repaired its bootloader: windows could boot then.
When I substituted disks and tried to boot, Windows 7 loading screen appeared and immediately I had a blue screen of death (or something similar) which anyway disappeared in less than a second (I was not able to read anything from that screen)
Now, when I try to boot windows either with grub or trying to enable boot straight from second hard drive in BIOS, I receive an error stating that it is necessary to use the windows repair disk to fix problems.
My question is: how can I finally fix this situation?
It would be quite important, for me, to not format neither of the disks, and I could even accept to renounce booting windows from grub as it would be ok even changing BIOS priority every time I need to use windows 7.
I really apologize for my annoying question but I really tried everything I could find without success; sorry for my poor english, too.
Anyway, this distribution seems just amazing to me! Thanks for your time.

It worked!!! Actually I don't know what changed, I proceeded removing the first disk (arch) WITHOUT, this time, changing the position of the windows disk. I used windows 7 DVD to repair the second disk. It tooks several attempts since it failed without specifying the problem. Eventually, I was able to boot windows 7, everything worked. Then, I plugged the primary linux hard drive and booted into arch, where I used "grub-install /dev/sda" as root. It executed without errors, but when I checked menu.lst file, surprisingly I discovered that it was not changed at all by grub-install.
Anyway it must have detected windows on /dev/sdb, since I am now able to boot both arch and windows without problems.
It was a weird situation, but anyway it worked well!! Thank you for the support, I really appreciate!

If I disable secure boot and legacy option then It is possible to dual boot window 8.1 with linux???

Did you do a full disc backup of the C: Drive using a backup tool other than windows? If you did, then the recover of that partition will be up to your backup software.
If worse comes to worse, you can use the novo button to restore your computer to what it was like when it came from the factory. But there really is nothing to worry about. Create your new partition and just make sure that you install Linux to that partition. Make sure it is not the same size as any other partition, that way even if the Linux installer does not show the volume labels, you can tell which partition you want to install Linux in just by the size.

I am a college student.I use Lenovo Z510 which has full UEFI with 1TB hdd of which 931gb is free.I shrinked it to 2 X 465 GB partitions of which one has oem install of win 8.1 with my personal stuff and games.My course requires a clean install of win 8.1 for various softwares like creo, catia.I want to install a clean win 8.1 for college and projects on my second partition with the same oem license...I have prepared a fresh win 8.1 usb with windows media creation tool....but i dont know how to proceed for a sucessful full UEFI installationhow do i do that ? guys ..help me...when i googled it came across efi and two other partitions...what should i do ?also i have no plans to upgrade to win 10 as it doesnt support the existing versions of design softwarea

There have been some cases where an EFI deployment of Windows has failed, and you have to use the system's EFI shell to boot the OS manually. The 'map' command is used after booting into the shell (if it does not run by default) to show which volumes exist
on the system.

The specs for the tablet in question seem to indicate it only has 16GB "disk" for the OS to use. A standard Windows 8.1 core/pro would not be viable and Windows 8.1 with Bing is not available to the public. Since the tablet is already licensed
for Windows 8.1 with Bing, it would be best to get the recovery solution from the manufacturer. Otherwise you'd have to purchase a new license and then the OS may not have enough space to install/use properly.

Dual Boot Win 7 & win 10 Problems?

I am dual booting this, (Win 10 on my 2TB HDD and Win 7 on my SSD.) and now when i try to boot back to Win 7 my mouse switches off. The thing works fine in 10, and had been workign for years on 7... Anyone else seen a problem like this?
I have tried reinstalling the mouse drivers and it isnt helping on Win 7. Unplugging and pluggung in, the mouse lights up for a split second, but then dies again. switch back to Win 10 and it works as usual. No problem at all...

Are you using USB mouse?
If so, how about another USB port?
If this is a USB mouse, I suggest you uninstall the USB controller in Windows 7 system and restart to check if you can get it work.
1.Open Device Manager.
2.Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
3.Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
4.Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.

Because of my needs (worrk related) i need win 7 installed.

first of all, i'm not sure windows xp works on your system.
secondly, you need to install previous operation system before. you can not install xp on windows 7 or vista.
if you do that, you may need to change boot volume or make changes on volumes. but one key recover will stop working.
so, i suggest you not.

Dual boot

A colleague has just purchased a new Lenovo (might be an L540 - not certain) and says she has it installed with Windows 7 "with the option of changing to 8".
She has seen me running a dual boot of Win 7 and 8 on an older laptop, and wonders whether her machine as delivered from Lenovo can be set up this way. I have no idea of the licensing arrangements of a new machine, or what disks, if any, that it came with, but am I correct to assume that it is not possible?
Her idea was either to leave bpoth OS's installed and have one set up for home use and one set to match her business network or, alternatively, just to try both OS's for a time to see whether she gets on with Win8.

I'm not really sure about the licensing arrangement, but with my Z570 it was fairly easy to set up a dual boot since my system came with the $15 Windows 8 upgrade offer. That offer included a download of Windows 8 along with the Key for registration.
In order to install your friend will have to do some partition resizing to make room for Windows 8. Since all the primary partitions are currently being used, at least on my Z570, she will have to create a larger extended partitions in which to create another logical partition for the Windows 8 install. The only negative result of the resizing is that the option for the One Key Recovery will no longer work on boot up. If that is an important feature to her she might reconsider install Windows 8 on her hard drive.
