Dual Boot Pre-Installed Windows 7 Computer with Enterprise linux

hello house, i have a system with pre-installed window7 and i want to load enterprise linux 5 as the second O.S,to have 2 operating systems on a Pc.how do i go about it?

First, carefully evaludate your motives for thinking dual-boot because just
install VirtualBox or VMWare to run OEL as a virtual guest requires little
system reorganization.
However, if your laptop does not support virtualization then dual
boot is the way to go:
1) Get KNOPPIX or SystemRepairDisk from the net. Or just any live
distribution that includes gparted, which is what Linux uses
for a partition wizard.
2) Use gparted to shrink your Win7 partition until you have
enough room for OEL.
3) Now, reboot using the OEL installation media.
4) Be careful on the disk partitioning screen; you want to "use
available free space" and not the "use all of disk" or "delete
all partitions" choices. This is the critical step to get right
to keep your Win7 files from being deleted.
5) Proceed with default OEL install.
6) Install the GRUB bootloader to the MBR for the disk. GRUB will
then allow you to boot from either OEL or Win
Take a break; you're done.

  • Dual booting pre-installed Windows 8 and Linux?

I just bought a G780 with Windows 8 pre-installed. Ideally, I would also like to install some flavor of Linux. I've been searching but not finding much info on how difficult or time-consuming this would be, or if there are any special considerations or anything. I've found some guides on dual-booting Windows 8 and Linux but they were all for installing Windows straight from a disk, not anything where it's already pre-installed, and some indicated they thought it might be problematic to use a pre-installed version of Windows. Anyway I was hoping that if anybody has done this on the G780 or even a similar laptop that you could share how it went and any difficulties you encountered. I'm open to using any Linux distro if it'll be easy to install. I would appreciate any info you could share. Thanks.

I had issues with Windows 8 as pre-installed on my G580, my employer at the time was using Windows 7 only and would not allow upgrades for security purposes.  I deleted the entire drive (including hidden) knowing at some point I would re-install Windows 8 or later from retail disk when needed.
Linux can resize partitions during the install process, but be careful not to disturb the hidden partition or the windows boot loader in the process.  Linux Mint is the best yet for this purpose, OpenSUSE and Fedora failed, CentOS failed and Ubuntu was not able to boot, but did not "hurt" the windows partitions.
    Good luck.

My advice to you is, since you have established such a reputation on this board, on issues that you don't have any knowledge or don't feel comfortable about, please just keep quiet. I don't think your job is to answer every question that has been posted on this board. Recklessly, or worse, knowingly, providing a wrong answer is much worse than no answer at all. These are serious personal accusations. Are you trying to make some noise to create some visibility for yourself? Please don't steal any of my limelight! ;-)
Personally, I don't particularly appreciiate many of your responses to some of the questions that I posted. To me, your responses are rude, idiotic (and insults to my intelligence)!Sorry, I have no idea what makes you so upset. Are you just making this up? What questions and answers are you taking about?
Are you referring to this post: Ralink RT5390 Does Not Work on the UEK Kernel
May I quote/remind you of your own posting:
We installed OL6.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 on a new Asus X45A notebook. It has a Ralink RT5390 wireless card. With Ubuntu, both wifi and video work flawlessly. However, the wifi driver (from elrepo) does not work for the the uek kernel (2.6.39). While the wifi driver works when boot into the RHEL kernel (2.6.32), it created an "even bigger problem" in that the video starts at about 1/10 from the left edge of the screen.
But again, please no one be fooled by my overly optimistic and simplistic comments*. The reality is, I am glad OL6 desktop works at all.
    * For example, I actually installed OL6 on 4 notebooks, one of them "does not work" because I couldn't dim the screen. I did not intend to lie, but subconsciously, I somewhat forgot that there was this failed case.
So what are you really trying to tell us/me here?
I think you have shot yourself in the foot here. I'm afraid the best I can offer to you is to remove my response if you remove your post.

  • Can't install windows 8.1 with boot camp

I'm trying to install windows 8.1 with boot camp and this is the message I keep getting. I've tried several times and every time I get this. I have a 2015 MacBook Pro. I've tried installing from a usb with ISO and also from a oem windows dvd. Any help would be appreciated.

    Excellent.
Windows installation has four or five reboots, and the Apple BootManager tracks such reboots via the Mac NVRAM, otherwise the next reboot will cause OS X to boot rather than Windows. It is also used to set up some variables used to pass information to the CSM-BIOS layer. If an installation has failed, the variables do not reflect the current and clean state of the machine. A NVRAM reset will re-initialize these variables for the next attempt.

You need to discard or save to an external disk and then discard some of the stuff we all tend to keep forever (movies, music, pictures, docs, apps no longer used, etc.). A clogged up disk also does not function ideally either.

  • INSTALL WINDOWS 7 OVER PRE-INSTALLED WINDOWS 8 LAPTOP

    Hello everyone i am Raj
    Q.
Anbody have worked with MBR AND GPT  ?
is their anyway  to install windows 7 on pre-installed windows 8 laptop from company .
    problem  is :-
1.)when you try to installed windows 7 it will say "windows cannot be installed on this disk because this disk is GPT partitioned .
2.)dilemma is that you cannot convert a partition in MBR but you can convert a whole disk .
3.)The recent UEFI support's windows 7 as a dual boot but that too x64 .
i  have tried every possible solution that a Windows technician   could do :D
    NOTE :-
Important thing is that only C:\\  drive should be formatted in which we want's to install windows 7  and rest of the data of other drives must be safe
but still if any body get the job done PM me
    My situation :-
i have formatted my c:\\ drive where i was having windows 8.1
i wanted it to be roll back to windows 7 Seriously but this problem does not allowing ME TO have that
and please don't  suggest to have a clean install
    :P
i will be eagerly waiting for the reply
if anybody get the job done please take a time and PM

    Hi,
I think it is quite difficult to install Windows 7 overriding the pre-installed Operation System without formatting the hard disk.
Because as you descripted in the post, your computer is booted with a UEFI firm ware, but your hard drive is not configured for UEFI mode, you cannot just convert one partition, you have to format the whole hard disk for
UEFI by using the GPT partition style, this lets your use the PC’s UEFI firmware feature, more details can be found at :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/dn336946.aspx
All data should be backed up before you install Windows 7 to override the pre-installed Operation System.

  • TS: Pre-installed Windows 8.1 attempt to install windows 7.

    Greeting,
I recently get a Dell laptop with pre-installed Windows 8.1, but I find out there are many compatibility issues on Windows 8.1. So I decided to install Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit into the system without wipe out the windows 8.1. I followed a lot of threads
through the web. I am be able to finally solve the GPT booting stuff and get into the installation page, BUT there is another problem comes up. I cannot find a solution on the internet. The installation cannot be started because there
is not enough required space for the window 7 to be installed.
I have 100 GB partition of  free space for the window to installed, so I believe it is the
System Reserved Space that makes the problem. However, I have not find a way to resize it no matter I use the third party tool or not, because it is
    GPT Style.
Is there any way that I could install window 7 without wipe out the window 8.1??
I really need to use the windows 7 since most of my software that I use is not compatible with windows 8.1.
    Thanks
    CK

I believe in theory you could install Win7 to a partition this way using an answer file. A problem would be that the OS won't boot if you deploy it using Setup by default. You would have to add a boot entry to the BCD for Win8.1 using BCDEdit, so that you
    can have a dual-boot system.
What I would do instead is in Win 8.1 you can burn your recovery media. After doing so, you could do a clean install with Windows 7 and if needed you could reload Windows 8.1 using the recovery DVD.

  • [Success] Dual Booting Arch and Windows 7 [Advice / Confirmation]

So I have been trying to get Starcraft II to work with wine and no luck.
I have decided to install windows back on my computer, besides it might come in handy since I'm heading back to school soon.
Anyways I have tried dual booting arch and windows in the past, and my results have never been stable.
Today I will try using the program gparted.
Let me give you my thoughts on how I plan to go through this and please give me some advice so I don't loose everything I have worked for on my linux box
1.Currently I have two hard drives, one for all my main programs and one for my media files (mounting usb, dvd, etc, and it actually has no files in it xD).
I plan to use gparted to re-size my second harddrive (media drive), create an extended partition, and a logical ntfs partition within it.
2.I pop in my windows cd that I recieved with my laptop and install it on the space I have partitioned for windows.
    3. If my grub gets wiped out my windows (which I hope it doesn't not sure how the MBR stuff works) I insert a Ubuntu live cd and do
    sudo grub
    > root (hd0,0)
    > setup (hd0)
    > exit
4.Configure grub to boot windows 7.
    5.Be happy with no headache.
    SO....
If someone with past experience with dual booting windows and arch could please give me some advice, as I do not want to lose all my data, start over, and have another headache.
I know I must learn to backup arch, which I will before september.
But if anyone has any protips, or sees a flaw in my plan please point it out!!!
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and even more if advice has been given to boost my confidence!
    For now I will wait
    Thank you fellow archies.

    1) Windows must be installed to a primary partition - attempting to install it to an logical partition will result in an epic fail
    2) Physically disconnect the harddrive you do not want windows on as windows typically installs the bootloader on the 1st hardisk (ie /sda) regardless of installation drive (ie /sdb)
3 / 4) Complete the windows installation then reattached your Arch drive and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst (as root) pointing the W7 entry to (hd1,0) - no need to reinstall grub
    5) Hey it's windows - anything could happen
If you create an NTFS partition right at the beginning of the the drive before you start the W7 install you can prevent it greedily using up 2 of you 4 primary partitions - I would also completely update you new W7 installation past SP1 before reattaching the other drive to further prevent W7 going mental
    satanselbow thank you so much!
Everything works great I had no stumbles, and I hope no problems in the future!!
I will post exactly what I did in case someone has the same issue.
    1. Partition you're secondary harddrive as primary ntfs with gparted
    2. Reboot, and if you get a file system check error, check you're udev rules. (For my case in particular I had to change the udev rules I got for auto mounting usb, ext harddrive, etc.
3.Power off your computer and physically remove the harddrive that contains all your linux goodies
    4. Plug in your windows cd and install in the partition you created
    5. Update your windows OS
    6. Plug in Ubuntu live CD and reboot
    7. Use commands to get grub to overwrite the windows boot loader (In my case I put grub everyone hd0,0 hd0,1 just to be sure, but you might want to do things cleaner)
    8. Reboot and see if grub loads up
    9. Use Ubuntu live CD again and launch Gparted, select the boot to your extra linux space (if you had one, not sure if this is needed)
    10. Plug in your linux harddrive and reconfigure /boot/grub/menu.lst and your good to go
Once again shout outs to satanselbow!!! For without him I might've failed brutally!
    Cheers!

  • Can I install Windows XP SP1 with Bootcamp on my new Mac Mini 2011 i7 ?

Can I install Windows XP SP1 with Bootcamp on my new Mac Mini 2011 i7 ?

Baiscally if your Mini came with Lion Pre-installed new then No you can't use XP.
The Lion installed computers no longer support XP OR Vista via Apple's Boot Camp.
For one thing Apple only supported XP with SP2 in order to install it on pre Lion computers.
If the Mini had come pre-installed new with say 10.6 then you could have installed XP and still of been able to upgrade to Lion without any issues as you already have the drivers for XP installed. Lion only has the drivers for W7.

I just took SA 239 Intermediate. I have limited resources and need to dual boot my Intel Based Sys with SUN Solaris 8 (what we use at work) and Windows 2000 Server. Is this possible?
Keyword Searches for dual boot; dual boot intel etc return nothing. Tons of Linux, not SUN. Anyone have a link?

Yes there is a way. Check the following link:
    http://multiboot.solaris-x86.org/v/1.html
I have used the same document (another section of it) and i have installed in my laptop windows 2003(or XP,2000), solaris x86 (9 or 10) and linux and it worked just fine. you don't have to change the boot loader. solaris boot loader can work just fine. for further instructions and advice just ask....

Unfortunately i accidentally deleted that partition and lost the files in it.  So my Laptop doesnt load windows 8 anymore.. I tried the F3 Recovery tool, but it's not functioning. While installing the Windows 7 It appears that there's this Disk 1 Partition 2: BIOS_RVY (total Size)21.0GB, ( free space)3GB , OEM Reserved. As i read from other posts. This is where your windows 8 Product Key and etc. are stored. I really hate saying this, but most likely the only way to get the disks is to either send the laptop back for MSI to reinstall the factory software, or perhaps purchase the restore disks from MSI, if they sell them.
    >>How to contact MSI.<<
I just downloaded a WINDOWS 8 ISO from the Internet and managed to install it. So im using my Windows 8 now.. but the problem is, it's not activated and some pre-installed software from MSI are gone. is there any way to recover my FILES from the BIOS_RVY Partition coz i can see it in the DISK MANAGEMENT and when i right click it, it only shows "Help"

How can I retrieve my calendar info that was sucked from my iPad 2 after upgrading to OS V and backing up to iCloud (using Windows XP computer with Outlook)?

I think (and I'll double check) only the BBLink events will sync on a wired USB sync. I'm fairly certain of that.
You'll need to use your calendar syncing via an EAS email account (outlook.com, for instance, is free) to sync wirelessly. It works great. I use it and was a former tied to the USB sync guy as well... and I thought I was gonna die a painful death without it. I found more freedom this way.
This explains the process. But I don't think you'll get BBM Groups to sync.

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.
