Dual boot with Mavericks and Snow Leopard on Two different internal drives?

I have a late 2009 quad core Mac Pro running Snow Leopard- it has 4 internal HD's.  I want to eventually upgrade to Mavericks.  Before I do a clean install of Mavericks on my start up disk that has Snow Leopard OS, I was hoping I could download Mavericks and install it on another clean internal hard drive to test it out before I commit to erasing my main drive and doing a clean install.  My Mac Pro meets the minium specs to run Mavericks.
If I install Mavericks on this second internal drive can I dual boot using the option key at start up and elect to either operate in Snow Leopard or Mavericks?  What are the concerns or issues I might face if this is possible?
As I have Snow Leopard, I am also unable to produce a Mavericks bootable USB flash drive- the terminal commands don't work with Snow Leopard. With Mavericks installed on a second internal hard drive- will I be able to create a bootable Mavericks USB Flash drive?
Thanks for any advice.

  • Boot Mavericks and Snow Leopard

Is it possible to have Mavericks and Snow Leopard installed and working on the same workstation?
I have three disks and VMWare Fusion already on my machine. I want to run a bunch of hardware/software no longer compatible on Mavericks.

If your Mac Pro can run both Mavericks and Snow Leopard and you install them on different partitions or different drives in your drive bays, you can run them both, just not at the same time. If you mean as virtual machines, you can do that too, though you'll need Snow Leopard Server for the VM. Check out the Fusion forum for virtualizing details.

I want to install an old airport express, the ones which are directly plugged into the socket - but it does not work with Maverick or Snow Leopard - can I configure it with a windows pc?

The Mac running Snow Leopard should be able to configure virtually any version of the AirPort Express.
Tell us what steps that you are taking to configure the Express and what happens after each step.

  • How do I install a snow Leopard on a second internal drive

I just installed a 2nd internal drive on my MacPro (1,1). I have Snow Leopard (SL) already installed and running on my primary boot drive that works well.
I am looking to make the second drive a mavericks boot drive so I can switch back and forth between SL and Mavericks. I understand I must install SL before moving up to mavericks.
Problem is the SL install DVD does not offer me an option to select a drive other than the startup drive (original drive) to install the software.
The 2nd drive is formatted Mac OS Journaled, 1 partition using GUID. I did this using Disk Utility.
Any Ideas on how I can get SL installed so I can move up to Mavericks?
Side note: I have to keep Snow Leopard as an option because some of my software will not run under Mavericks

I tried to install Mavericks with a USB drive. I started up holding the option key using the boot manager, selected the USB drive, the boot manager froze, then booted to my original snow leopard drive. I'm thinking of using my laptop to put my MacPro into Target Disk Mode to see what happens.

  • Can I dual boot Mavericks and Snow Leopard?

Hello. I own a 2011 i5 iMac. I recently started working with some softwares that will only work properly on Snow Leopard, but I have Mavericks installed. My question is: can I create a new partition in my HD and use BootCamp to install Snow Leopard?

If it is a Late 2011 model, then you cannot. The earlier models came with a special version of Snow Leopard on DVDs. You can install only that version of Snow Leopard. If you've lost those discs, then you are out of luck.
You do not use Boot Camp for this. Rather, you will use Disk Utility.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • Dual boot with lion and mavericks?

    Hi Guys,

  • Trouble with iWeb and Snow Leopard?

I have a iMac (early 2007) Dual Core Intel Based, and have been using iWeb for a couple of years just fine.
Recently (a few months ago) I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and since then my computer freezes etc...
I've been getting the dreaded Grey Screen with the Apple Logo and churning gear at startup and the computer won't get passed that point.
I've tried booting from my Snow Leopard Disk and have run Disk Utility and Repair, and I have no errors.
What's odd is that if I try to open iWeb now and start using it for more then a couple of minutes the computer gets the dreaded spinning rainbow and freezes up, forcing me to shut down often.
Now, I am only able to start my computer early in the morning after it has been turned off at night.
    Any Reccomendations?
    Thanks in Advance...

Assuming the actual install of Snow Leopard is OK, you could run Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) to see if there is any unusual activity when your Mac is idling.
If so, you can launch Console.app to see if you can see what it is that's causing it.
I had that problem on an old iMac last night where iWeb was sluggish and the ball was spinning.
It turned out that CrashReporter was hogging the CPU by continuously creating reports for an unidentified app, hidden in the System files, that was trying to launch. After tracking down and extermination it, all became peaceful again.

  • Dual Core Macbook (2006) and Snow Leopard

I was ready to pre-order Snow Leopard, but now I'm not sure. I accept that it won't work with my ancient G4, or my old Mac Mini. But ...
My wife's Macbook has Dual Core 2. No problem. Mine, however, is the very first Macbook - with only a Dual Core processor (without the "2")
Anybody have a clue whether or not I'm in an unfortunate technological gap?

There are no compelling reasons not to upgrade, but I always suggest you examine the information on the upgrade to decide if you really need it. No matter what the upgrade involves it's likely that some older applications may no longer work with the new version. I would not upgrade until you know your mission critical applications will work with the new version. If you want to try it out then install it on another hard drive you can use. That way you can test out the new version without making any changes to your normal system.

  • Windows 7, Boot Camp version and Snow Leopard?

Hi folks, I have a 2009 quad Mac and recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. The questions I have are:
Was the upgrade to Boot Camp 3 automatic?
If not what do I need to do to upgrade that?
How do I tell which version of Boot Camp I have?
Is the update for Boot Camp yet ready for Win 7? I read that an announcement was made yesterday of an update, but not sure it was released.
I wouldn't dare install Win 7 on my old XP PC Laptop, but I need to check web pages for my design work, and looks like Win 7 may become the standard as opposed to Vista on newer PCs.
I am also running Parallels 4, don't know if updating bootcamp will mess up that install... or functionality.

Okay, Boot Camp assistant, I get. I guess I was mistaken about the meaning of Boot Camp? When I boot into Windows on the installed XP system in my computer on its own partition, is Boot Camp involved in any way like an operating system or software platform foundation like DOS allowing Windows to operate, or is Boot Camp just for setting up a partition in the first place? I guess I'm wondering why Boot Camp Assistant 3 needs to be upgraded to allow the install Win 7, if I could just boot into Windows and run the upgrade in Windows? Does that make sense why I'm asking the questions?

  • Dual boot with archlinux and windows issue

    Hi again!
This is what i did from the beginning :
windows was already installed and then i installed archlinux after shrinking the windows partition . I made a partition for boot , one for swap and one for root(i wanted to do for home too , but only 4 primary partitions are allowed) . I made the boot partition bootable , and so was windows bootable and i got the message that there are two bootable partitions so it couldn't write the partition table . So removed the bootable tag from windows and left only the boot partition bootable . I then installed the grubloader to boot partition and then i edited that grubmenu and uncomment the part where windows was like it says in wiki. After restarting i could see the menu to choose between archlinux and windows , i chose windows , i succesfully logged in and after restarting again i couldn't see the grubloader and i automatically logged in windows .
Does anyone know what might be the issue ??
    Thanks !

yes i only have one hard rive , i managed to find a solution not that elegant though , i 've installed acronis os selector from windows and i can choose between windows and linux with acronis on boot . If i choose linux i get to the grub menu and i can choose between arch linux and windows . So it seems that the grub menu is still there but it doesn't appear when i boot for some reason .

  • Dual boot with WinXp and Arch-Solved

    Hi friends,
I was using windows boot loader to boot into arch instead of grub. I used this:
    dd if=/dev/hda7 of=arch.lnx bs=512 count=1
to get the first 512 bytes of the partition in which I installed arch and then added a line directing towards arch.lnx (moved to windows partition) in boot.ini. But now after reinstalling arch, when i do the same to get first 512 bytes of the partition, it generates a blank file and hence using that I'm not able to boot into arch. Grub is installed in this partition only. Any hints about this issue.
EDIT: I dont know what was the problem exactly, but after I reinstalled grub by "grub-install /dev/hda7" and then did the above command, it worked fine.

moderator comment: This is a question on Kubuntu installation but it seems to me OP specifically wants to know how to set up his partitions without harming Arch. As long as the discussion remains about Arch Linux this thread can stay. I'm going to have to move this from Installation to Newbie Corner.
Annorax wrote:I assure you that I am doing my own research. I am new to Linux and new to dual booting and was just looking for some pointers and a place to start reading.
Please see this. I advise you to read the links 2ManyDogs gave. You also need to give us more information about your partitions, such as what is mounted where. I suspect you only have primary partitions and will need to convert one into an extended partition.

  • Tiger and Snow Leopard on an external hard drive?

    Hi,
I have a mini mac running tiger and I need to update my itunes and ipod touch which i cant currently do in tiger.
I dont want to upgrade my hard drive as most of my programs wont work with the update, eg. photoshop and dont want to buy a new photoshop package.
As i have a spare external hard drive, I was wondering if I could run leopard or snow leopard on that and update itunes that way, thus keeping tiger running on my mini mac, and have the option of which system to run. Is this possible?
    Many Thanks.

Hi, yes you can, & with a big enough drive you could partition it for multiple bottable OSX Partitions.

        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.

  • Lion and Snow Leopard on two partitions

Hi, just wondering if a guru can advise me on this/ I am running Lion on 450 GB partition of my 500GB internal drive with the other dedicated to SL. I upgraded the main partition a few weeks back. I use the smaller partition as my Disk Utility and Disk Warrior boot up disc.
I am not having any problems, Lion is flying along. Love it. But is it possible yet to repair Lion with Disk Warrior? Is it compatable if I wish to do a bit of a clean up of my system at some stage? And also would SN Disk Utility be able to repair Lions Permissions? I was going to keep SN on to run and third party ppc aps until I am all up to date for Lion, or would I just be better updating the back up boot disc to Lion as well?
Thanks for your time in advance
    Keats

You need to get the 4.3 updater from Alsoft.
You can also create a recovery USB stick with
    this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433
This is a good idea any way since hard drives can crash
    or just get corrupted.
