Dual core hang ups

I was just wondering if the newest version fixes the hang up while importing cd's or if I still have to shut off one of my cores to do it.

  • USB Memory Stick won't work on my Dual Core Intel Mac...

Just bought a 4gb memory stick a few days ago - it doesn't seem to like my Dual Core Intel Tower at all. I am plugging it into the USB slot at the front and trying to copy a load of files onto it.
It's got around 1gb on it now and I can't seem to copy another single file onto it. I was copying folders of files, but just trying to copy a single file the finder seems to hang and I can't cancel the copy process - I have to hold the power on button to regain control of my Mac - is this normal??
The stick works perfectly on a PC...
Disk Utility reports no problems, and reformats OK.

Be sure that the memory device is not NTFS formatted. You need to use FAT32 else MacOS Extended for it to work.

  • Installed Memory not showing up in a late 2009 Dual Core Mac Pro

I have a late 2009 Dual Core Mac Pro.
I restarted the my computer today, an a utility popped up saying something about I need to re-arrange the memory in my mac because it was not optimized.
I thought this was weird because all the slots are filled with 2 gigs chips for a total of 16 gigs.
When I checked about this Mac it said I only had 12 gigs of memory in my system.
I went to open up the case, and there are to red light glowing for slots 7 and 8 on the motherboard, and any memory chips I put in those slots do not show up.
Can anyone tell me what is going on and how to fix it.
There was a power outage the other day, but I keep my machine on a surge protector.
I generally try to take really good care of my computers so seeing something wrong out of the blue like this is a little freaky for me.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks
    Stan

Each "side" is operated independently, so slots 1, 2, 3 and 4 are one set, and 5, 6, 7, and 8 are an independent set. The third and fourth slots on each side share a memory channel, so a failure of one module in these two slots could possibly disable the other one.
The Mac Pro uses the Error Correction Code hardware built into its Xeon processor to provide single-bit (in a word) Error Detection and Correction in Hardware. It also can detect double-bit errors, but these cause a kernel panic, machine-check, error overflow or uncorrected error. This is by design, to avoid poisoning you data.
The Error Correction Code hardware is used in a special way at Startup. Any failure (correctable or not) that occurs in the first few seconds while running the Power-On Self Test causes your Mac to declare the slot(s) of those modules "empty" and simply not use them in the running system. Vigilance is required, because the next time you run this test, those Bad modules may pass.
So the movie version is that you have some DIMM(s) that have failed, and you should remove them from your Mac and consider whether to replace them with good modules, or to add some larger modules.
I expect your recent power failure, protected by a UPS, is merely a coincidence, not a cause-and-effect.

  • Booting/Crashing Problems with Dual Core 2.3GHz PowerMac

I'm wondering if anybody else is having this problem. ...
I'm having problems booting my new Mac... for the first few weeks everything was fine ... but for the last few of days it often takes 2 or 3 tries to boot to the desktop (it hangs during the boot process) and sometimes when it get there it freezes when I try to launch an app. Rebooting yet again usually solves the problem...
Yesterday after i got it booted it sounded like my disk drive was working for a long time after it was booting the computer was very slow and when i checked CPU usage was very high bit i was not running anything to cause that!
This evening I had to reboot 5 times before I was able to do anything .. and one time the fans kicked into high gear and sounded like a vacuum cleaner!
Once I got it going I opened Mail and checked my new eMails, opened Safari then left the computer for about a half hour and when I got back I had message on my screen saying I had to reboot!
When I got my Mac I immediately ran the full hardware test and it passed... Then I immediately added 2 GB of Crucial RAM and ran the full hardware and memory test yet gain and everything passed...
So it should NOT be a RAM issue.
Has anybody else seen this type of thing and/or has any suggestions on how to fix it or isolate the problem?
    Thanks

As I'm waiting for for my replacement Dual Core 2.3 G5 to arrive back from Apple, I've been scanning this site to see if there has been any conclusive determination about the underlying problems with the new G5s. So far, I'm sorry to report, I don't see any.
My recomendation to you is to talk directly to apple tech support If you aren't already. Although they may not have a definate solution at this point, you may be able to get a new machine, with more assurrances of it being healthy, than getting your current machine repaired at a service center. You have only 30 days from your purchase date to determine this, and in my case it took a few days working with them to get to the point where all of their tests and trials were done and my machine was classified DOA.
We have paid too much money for a machine that is only as reliable as the amount of time we're willing to spend to get it running after a few (or more)boots. One of the main reasons I've chosen Apple for all these years is that I didn't want to have to learn all of the underlying engineering and programming that make it work. I have always been willing to pay more money for a system that works when you turn it on the first time. I am confident that Apple wants very much to maintain their image of reliablility since much of their competitive edge is the advantage of great looking Apple hardware running their feature packed native software.
I am hoping that we haven't entered a new era with Apple products where my new best friend is going to be the tech guy at the local apple repair center: (not to knock any of them..by the way.)
Although I don't make my living on my cumputer as you do, I depend on my computer throughout my day for information, important financial transactions and comunication. It goes beyond inconvenient to have to send my machine back, for whatever reason. I am writing this on a rock solid G4 933 that has never had a single problem. Have I just been lucky?

  • AMD dual core 64 X2 and Opteron 1**; what motherboard.

Hi to everybody, my name is Mauro and I am Italian. I have had for many years a lot of mobos MSI that are shown always reliable and with really excellent utility. An example the LiveUpdate that unlike utility of other brand is very comfortable and reliable. Currently I have a system AMD 64 X2 3800+ stepE4 with Asus A8N SLI Premium and memory RAM G.Skill PC4000 (chip Samsung UCCC) F1-4000USU2-2GBHZ PC4000. I have many problems of stability and I would want to return to the brand MSI. I use the PC as Workstation I am not interested to the SLI and I would want soon to pass to the CPU Opteron 1 * * dual core. The customer care G.Skill has reported that the brands of reference for the development of the forms are the MSI and few others. You would know me to suggest a complete mainboard in the endowments, silent and compatible with the CPU from me you quote. How VGA I have both chip ATI X700 Silent Pipes 256Mb or NVIDIA 6600 always silent pipes 256Mb. I am not interested to overclock. I am observing with attention the RD480Neo2 and other mobo with chipset NForce Ultra K8N Neo4 Platinum. Thanks for your share and suggestions.

Skippy, that's changing fast. Probably most major manufacturers are now explicitly supporting the Opteron.
Even MSI is getting there: K8N Diamond Plus
    Hi,
To a careful study I have discovered that perhaps my Asus A8NSLIPremium has a problem that Asus is resolving. However I have asked to one friend of mine to make a will the MSI K8N Diamond Plus; in Germany it is already available some exemplary. The fact that the development has been made really with the Ram DDR that I have purchased (the G.Skill PC4000) it is a very important factor for the stability of a system. You introduces then with a good section of feeding to 4 phases it is very important. Certainly I am not interested to the characteristics of overclock but a Ferrari is not purchased only for racing. I have not told you that in so many years I have almost always had 2 brands that have always guaranteed me reliability: Abit and MSI. Objectively now that have tried also a lot of Asuses (5) I are not fully satisfied. For instance the Utility: LiveUpdate2 gave me reliability in the update of the bios (operation that finishes in DOS); the utility AsusUpdate because of a bug in the summer '05 are cost me 3 MB (update that departs in auto and it finishes in Windows). Resulted not could remain without MB I have had to purchase other identical MB. And treating itself of corruption of bios no guarantee. I have also discarded Tyan because it accepts only certified RAM DDR and their support it doesn't guarantee the operation with my DDR G.SKILL. Now that are in game I don't sell certain the DDR!

  • Kingston Value Ram modules on PM dual core 2.0Ghz

    I have a powermac dual core 2.0 with 512mb non-ECC RAM.
I'm searching for memory to upgrade my mac but the only kingston memory modules that i find in every local store i visited match the Part Number KVR533D2N4/X (X = 512, 1, 2, 4), that corresponds to "Value Ram" brand of kingston modules.
I search in the forums about problems with Kingston Value Ram and i would like to know experiences upgrading dual core powermacs with this memory module (KVR533D2N4/X) or other 'Value Ram' memory modules provided by kingston.
    Thanks!
Powermac Dual Core 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I've used the Kingston brand on all my mac (ibook 700mhz G3,1.25DDR, 1.25 DP DDR & G5 DC. So far no problem. I recently purchased matched pair of 1gig (2 gi)DDR2 533mhz @ micro center, coast me $235.00. I was thinking about getting a seperate module. But I remember reading somewhere that for trouble free, better get the matched modules. 1gig x 2 per package = 2 gig or 512 x 2 = 1gig. I rather use brand for less head ache (so far).

  • System crashes when attempting to install 10.6.  Keeps asking to restart.  Computer is a Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor and 2 GB Memory.

I have tried to install 10.6 and when install is complete it says restart.  The computer restarts but keeps coming to a gray screen with a small black box that says to restart.  The processor is 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 2 GB of memory.  This should be more than adequate.  Any ideas?  Has anyone encountered this before?  I had to restore 10.5 from Time Machine.

Your sig line says iMac, but TMK no iMacs were ever made with 2x2.66 GHz processors. Is this a Mac Pro you are installing on? Are you using a retail Snow Leopaard DVD?

  • Power Mac G5 Dual Core Screen Goes Black Randomly But Seems To Still Be Running. I have to Force Quit

I totally just typed way to much info in the title.
In any event, my G5 Dual Core's(late 2005) screen will randomly go black with out notice. Its happend while designing in illistrator and also while browsing google(primarly the use of my comp is graphic design). The fans stay on and it sounds to still be fully running however the screen will not wake up and if i tap the power button it doesnt wake up either. I reset the "PRAM" while booting up, i toggled my screen saver/power saver also so its "never".
I thought the HD was faulty cause it sounds like a light saber at times... I figured the OS was crashing(im ingorant) so I bought a new one and more ram as well. I've installed the HD and am waiting for 10.3 OS to get here in hopes that the new HD and OS will not crash(again that was my educated guess as to what the issue was).
Is it a video card issue? faulty cable you think(VGA to DVI 17" Samsung)?
Thanks so much in advance for any and all feed back along with the patience of a newbie to the forum/community world.

  • HT3964 My MacBook Pro i5 Dual Core has a hardtime waking up when the computer is put to sleep and only when it goes to sleep and has been asleep for a while. The indicator light flashes on and off for a while and then freezes. I've done an SMC reset once.

Does any one have the same problem with their MacBook Pro i5 Intel Dual Core?  If the computer goes to sleep (not the screen) and is asleep for a while, when I try to wake it up it doesn't respond. I have to power it downn and restart it and sometimes it takes two or three attempts. Otherwise it works fine. I upgraded the memory to 8 GB. That is the only alteration doen to it. I've performed one SMC restart and now it wakes up  but it takes a while and a gray screen shows up. When I insert a DVD it won't start automatically I have to start the application in order to see it. Any suggestions?

  • DSC 8.6.1 wrong timestamps for logged data with Intel dual core

    Problem Description :
Our LV/DCS 8.6.1 application uses shared variables to log data to Citadel. It is running on many similar computers at many companies just fine, but on one particular Intel Dual Core computer, the data in the Citadel db has strange shifting timestamps. Changing bios to startup using single cpu fixes the problem. Could possibly set only certain NI process(es) to single-cpu instead (but which?). The old DSCEngine.exe in LV/DSC 7 had to be run single-cpu... hadn't these kind of issues been fixed by LV 8.6.1 yet?? What about LV 2009, anybody know?? Or is it a problem in the OS or hardware, below the NI line??
This seems similar to an old issue with time synch server problems for AMD processors (Knowledge Base Document ID 4BFBEIQA):

    Computer info:

    - Win XP Pro sp3
    - 2 G RAM
    - 1.58 GHz Core 2 Duo
    - LV/DSC 8.6.1 (Pro dev)
    - DAQmx, standard instrument control device drivers, serial i/o
(Nothing else installed; OS and LV/DSC were re-installed to try to fix the problem, no luck)
    Details:
A test logged data at 1 Hz, with these results: for 10-30 seconds or so, the timestamps were correct. Then, the timestamps were compressed/shifted, with multiple points each second. At perfectly regular 1-minute intervals, the timestamps would be correct again. This pattern repeats, and when the data is graphed, it looks like regular 1-sec interval points, then more dense points, then no points until the next minute (not ON the minute, e.g.12:35:00, but after a minute, e.g.12:35:24, 12:36:24, 12:37:24...). Occasionally (but rarely), restarting the PC would produce accurate timestamps for several minutes running, but then the pattern would reappear in the middle of logging, no changes made.
    Test info:
    - shared variable configured with logging enabled
    - data changing by much more than the deadband
    - new value written by Datasocket Write at a steady 1 Hz
    - historic data retrieved by Read Traces
    - Distributed System Manager shows correct and changing values continuously as they are written

    Meg K. B. ,
It sounds like you are experiencing Time Stamp Counter (TSC) Drift as mentioned in the KB's for the AMD Multi-Core processors. However, according to this wikipedia article on TSC's, the Intel Core 2 Duo's "time-stamp counter increments at a constant rate.......Constant TSC behavior ensures that the duration of each clock tick is
uniform and supports the use of the TSC as a wall clock timer even if
the processor core changes frequency." This seems to suggest that it would be not be the case that you are seeing the issue mentioned in the KBs.
Can you provide the exact modle of the Core 2 Duo processor that you are using?

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.
