Dual Core Intel - can I install non-universal software?

Can I install the non-universal version of Adobe Creative Suite onto my new G5 dual-core duo?

Yes you can, I've done it myself and it works pretty good.
Usually doing this results in slower performance because the application's binaries aren't a type Intel's processor can read. So Apple's application Rosetta compiles these binaries and translates them to Intel to be read by the computer.
This all happens while you running the application, which is why performance is slower.
Not to worry much about the technical terms, I'm sure all you want to know is if it's possible, and it is.

  • Running 10.6.8 on Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66GHz processors.  Can I upgrade to Lion 10.7

I've just upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro Dual-Core Intell Xeon, 2.66GHz.   Is it possilbe to upgrade to Lion 10.7 with my Mac Pro Dual Core or have I just hit my ceiling on 10.6.8 update ?

Mac Pros are not PowerMacs.    In 2006, Apple changed all its cheesegrater enclosure Macs to have the Xeon chip installed, and changed the name to Mac Pro at that that time from PowerMac G5.  That said, all Mac Pros can upgrade to a minimum of 10.7.5.   Only the earliest ones can't upgrade to 10.8 and above.   10.7 and later do not have Rosetta, the ability to run PowerPC (pre-2006) applications natively.  For other pitfalls, read this tip.

  • System crashes when attempting to install 10.6.  Keeps asking to restart.  Computer is a Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor and 2 GB Memory.

I have tried to install 10.6 and when install is complete it says restart.  The computer restarts but keeps coming to a gray screen with a small black box that says to restart.  The processor is 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 2 GB of memory.  This should be more than adequate.  Any ideas?  Has anyone encountered this before?  I had to restore 10.5 from Time Machine.

Your sig line says iMac, but TMK no iMacs were ever made with 2x2.66 GHz processors. Is this a Mac Pro you are installing on? Are you using a retail Snow Leopaard DVD?

My Q: Can I upgrade my memory ram from 8GB to 16GB ?

Sure. Make sure that you buy the RAM specified for your computer - 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs - and purchase from a reputable dealer such as Crucial, OWC, etc.
You can go to the Crucial website and use the System Scanner app to get the correct RAM for your unit.

Hi: Your information is somewhat conflicting, (a GS can not have an Intel processor), but if it has an Intel processor, it can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • RAM Update to 8 or even 16GB on MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 mid 2012?

    Hey folks,
i heard and read rumours, that it is possible to update the ram of the MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2012/no retina) to a double 8GB RAM, making it 16GB.
    Which would be great, right?
Apple says on the support website that all the MacBooks 13" are only able to hold two 4GB making it 8.
Currently I only have the standard two times two 4GB.
So i was wondering, since I found this Crucial PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz 8GB SODIMM on the Internet if that's a fit for the rumours.
    It says on the site:
    "Guaranteed compatible with:
    MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 mid 2012
Now, has any one experience with this one?
Maybe this memory will plug both slots and that's why it says compatible?
you find the website here: http://www.macdimms.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-DDR3-1600MHz-8GB-SODIMM_p_123.html
    appreciate the help.

It won't plug both spots. To get 16 GB you will have to buy 2 sticks, one for each slot.
Apple only recommends and will suport 8 and recommends installing in pairs - so 2 slots of 4 GB each. You can always try the 2 slots of 8 and see if they will work. I would recommend ordering from crucial direct. They are one of the better memory companies around and have a website at crucial.com.
You shouldn't have any issues as the maximum non-Apple supported config is 16 GB.
    Good luck.

  • Does the 13-inch: 2.5 GHz 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz internet speed the same as the 13-inch: 2.9 GHz 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz

does the 13-inch: 2.5 GHz 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz internet speed the same as the 13-inch: 2.9 GHz 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz

The retina MBP will be faster than the conventional one on boot and shutoffs as well as very demanding CPU/GPU intensive applications.  As far as web browsing , text editing and other non-CPU intensive applications there will be little if any difference between the two.
If you install A SSD in the conventional MBP, it will be faster than the retina due to the faster CPU.  Note also that the conventional MBP can have up to 16 GB RAM installed. The retina is restricted to a maximum of 8 GB.
You will have to weigh the differences in the display, speed, form (weight) and flexibility as to how they suit your needs.  All I can do is to and highlight the differences.
    Ciao.

what is the operating system available for Macbook Dual core Intel processor  system

Exactly what model? Do you really mean the old MacBook with the dual core processor or do you mean one using a Core 2 Duo  processor?
The last OS X that runs on a dual core Mac would be:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space

  • USB Memory Stick won't work on my Dual Core Intel Mac...

Just bought a 4gb memory stick a few days ago - it doesn't seem to like my Dual Core Intel Tower at all. I am plugging it into the USB slot at the front and trying to copy a load of files onto it.
It's got around 1gb on it now and I can't seem to copy another single file onto it. I was copying folders of files, but just trying to copy a single file the finder seems to hang and I can't cancel the copy process - I have to hold the power on button to regain control of my Mac - is this normal??
The stick works perfectly on a PC...
Disk Utility reports no problems, and reformats OK.

Be sure that the memory device is not NTFS formatted. You need to use FAT32 else MacOS Extended for it to work.
