Dual CPU G4 panics and applications quit

Hi,
I've had a single CPU G4 (digital-audio) machine running OS 10.4.x for quite some time. It's been remarkably stable.
Now, I've acquired a 533 mhz dual cpu machine, also a digital-audio model. Applications spontaneously quite much more often, more than once per day, mostly web browsers, and the kernel locks up several times per week.
I've run MemTest and repaired permissions and run the disk utility and run DiskWarrior, all to no avail. I also did a archive and fresh reinstall of OS 10.4.2, then a batch update with software update. Didn't help.
I'm wondering if certain dual cpu machines are just more prone to crash than their single cpu counterparts.
Any suggestions about how to make this machine more stable? It's not on a network, except for a conventional PPoE DSL connection.
I know I could try zapping the pram and resetting the PMU. Anything else?
It gets a lot of heavy iTunes use and also Rhapsody use. Is that a clue?
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Hi
dual CPU machines should be just as stable.
As already mentioned the first thing I'd suspect is the RAM. If you still have your old machine and could swap the RAM over (if you haven't already done so) that should prove it one way or the other.
Also dual CPUs generate more heat, especially under heavy load, which can result in kernel panics. I assume the computer has plenty of ventilation and isn't boxed in, the vents are clear of dust and the fans are working etc...

  • My refurbished Dual 2ghz keeps panicing and crashing

So a year ago I purchased a refurbished Dual 2ghz G5. After about 6 months, I began getting kernal panics more frequently. When I tried to use disc utility, it kept getting an error in repairing the disc. So I erased and reinstalled. It was probably a bad omen when I would get kernal panics when trying to install anything off the second disc of Mac Os X. So now, I'm still getting tons of kernal panics and programs shutting down.
I have some additional ram, but software tests say it checks out. Could that still be a problem? What else could be wrong? This computer is underperforming like crazy and I don't like it one bit.

    Alex Tripp-
    Greetings.
I won't bore you with the woulda, shoulda, coulda part about warranty repair. If it is still under warranty I would get it to the shop quickly.
Did it start thrwing the panics about the time you added the memory? That itself would be a clue.
Are you able to access the error logs? If so, anything good in them?
Try running MemTest http://www.memtestosx.org/ It is more thorough than the Apple supplied utility.
    Luck-

  • Kernel Panic and Application Crashes when Accessing a Folder

    Hi,
I originally posted in the iTunes forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=252516&tstart=75) with this problem as it was in iTunes where I first noted the issue. However since then I have discovered it is a system wide issue.
Everytime I try to access a specific folder, my iTunes Music folder, whichever application is accessing it will crash. Finder crashes when trying to view the folder, and other apps will crash when trying to open from or save to that folder. There will be no crash reporter when they crash either. I have also experienced two kernel panics, one when iTunes was playing, and another when Tech Tools Pro was doing its surface scan. The folder is on one of my two FW800 connected external hard drives. The kernel panic looks like this:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002478C8): hfs: block mark free: trying to free non-existent blocks (-1094886590 -1078469906 39039948)

I am not entirely sure as to what this means or how to deal with it. I am able to access the folder via terminal, but there are 2700 folders within my iTunes Music folder and 23137 songs, so it could take me a very long time to find the exact file or folder which is causing me problems. I could potentially have enough disk space should a backup be required but it would be backed up to 3 different drives and would be close. That is assuming of course that I would not experience the same panic when accessing the area. Can anyone help me with this?
    Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    The first phase:
Since the Kernel Panic is temporarily a state of suspended animation because of a safe-boot solution, try the next step. This is a pre-caution to avoid any failures during ongoing troubleshooting.
After safe-boot, launch System Profiler and select /Software/Extensions/ directory in Contents (on the left column ) menu. Next, open /System/Library/Extensions/ folder by Go to Folder command or by manual. Compare the both contents. You'll see System Profiler shows less kernel extensions than /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. There are ".kext" files that are not shown in the loaded Extensions directory. If there is a most suspect third-party extension (perhaps FireWire's driver), try removing out of the folder to a temporary made folder on the desktop-- you may be prompted the admin or login password.
    The second phase:
TechTool Pro fixed a file structure error in one file on the main drive, and some bad custom icons or bad bundle bits error now lie on on the main and one of your secondary drives, but not the previous problems. Also, you still cannot access that folder, however folders within that folder you can get to just fine, via the Go To Folder command or reveal in finder from iTunes.
Those symptoms appear to suggest that some directories structure and the volume information other than the main drive have lost their consistencies and a directory may be no longer accessible for some reason which happened before or during the Kernel Panic. Techtool Pro 4.0.6 seems to not be able to fix those problems. So if you have DiskWarrior 3.0.3, run it and hopefully fix them. If you do not have it, try the followings.
Connect the external FireWire drive in question, then boot into a Safe-mode. If this does not work well, first boot into a Safe-mode then connect the device.
Launch Terminal utility. Type diskutil list at the prompt. Here is an example to be displayed:
    MyMachine:~ Myself$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier
    0: Applepartitionscheme *233.8 GB disk0
    1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS MacOSX_HD 70.7 GB disk0s3
    3: Apple_HFS Data_HD 162.8 GB disk0s5
    /dev/disk1
    #: type name size identifier
    0: Applepartitionscheme *111.8 GB disk1
    1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk1s1
    2: Apple_HFS Data21HD 69.9 GB disk1s3
    3: Apple_HFS Debugger_HD 41.6 GB disk1s5
Find the disk identifier that points the external device in question. Type sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk1s3 if the target drive would be disk1s3. If the result shows you like below, the symptoms may be fixed.
    MyMachine:~ Myself$ sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk1s3
    ** /dev/rdisk1s3
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    ** Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    ** Checking Extended Attributes file.
    ** Checking volume bitmap.
    ** Checking volume information.
** The volume Data21HD appears to be OK.
If the above solution fails, boot into a Single-user-mode and perform the same way as above-- a "sudo" parameter MIGHT not be needed to type.
    The third phase:
Start up from Mac OS X 10.4.x Install disc. Launch Disk Utility program. Try repairing the target volume(s) on the external device and then repair the permissions.
If the above solution fails to fix all filesystem problems on that volume, then you may need to abandon hope some file or folder in question to trash it/them. Of course, I do not hope so.…
Also, when I booted into Safe Mode it started up the volume menubar item as usual but I had no sound... Is this normal during a Safe boot?
Certain Mac OS X features do not work when you are started up in Safe Mode. For example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use an AirPort card, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem.
So it should be no problem on this matter.

  • Kernal panics and unexpected quitting

    Hey everyone,
Recently my PB has been quitting just about every program I'm using, and sometimes as soon as I reopen the program it quits again. I've also been getting a few kernal panics recently, but the computer is not even a year old. I know that my lower ram slot has failed, but I haven't had the time to replace the logic board yet... is it possible that there are other problems with the logic board that are giving me software issues? I have tried repairing permissions and it hasn't changed anything. Is there any software I can run to see what's going on with my computer? I will eventually get it to apple to be repaired, but from what I've read about the process, the new logics boards often fail as well... Thanks for any suggestions.
    Sofi

    Hi Sofi,
You can run the AHT from your original disk. Run in loop mode to get a better feel for your RAM, although it won't be conclusive unless it sees it as bad.
Your Kernel Panics, by percentage, are most likely caused by memory. When troubleshooting your RAM slot, you may have moved the sticks around? Make sure it is seated properly.
    Good Luck,
    Joe

  • "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) when i quit applications

When i quit applications i often get the kernel panic message. I suspect that the problem is related to my M-box 2 mini. It happens if i have unplugged the M-box while my MBP is on, and then quit an application (f.eks Logic or Safari).
Is someone having the same problem? And what can i do to fix this?

Don't unplug the M-box while your MBP is on.

I am trying to download a variety of files and when it is finished, the Mac freezes up and the task bar continue to blink on and off.
I have to go into Firefox and actually quit the application to continue. Any help is very much appreciated.

are you backing up files, or doing a Time machine backup, either way, the Time machine will STOP when finished and show "last backup at XXXXXX"  meaning its done...... OR if when transferring files, it will show a progress bar on your desktop and vanish when files are copied.
Open up the Hitachi drive (your G drive is made by Hitachi, and the best made by the way).....and see if the files are there.
a MORE VISUAL way is to open the hard drive file, and drag and drop files INTO the Gdrive and you can see them visually be copied there as you do it.
To see your HD on your desktop GOTO  FINDER......PREFERENCES....then GENERAL TAB.........check the box marked HARD DRIVES.........then your Gdrive will appear on your desktop........open it from there,  and DRAG and drop files from anywhere INTO the Gdrive....... easy visual way to see the files being copied into the Gdrive.

  • My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU

My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open.  I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days.  They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive.  Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?

Here's the one from last night.

I have just completed a long document and the Pages application quit unexpectedly.  Is is lost irretrievably?

Yes, unless you've saved manually or have autosave software for it installed, which is only preloaded when using the latest Pages version on Mac OS X 10.7.
    Save your work frequently.

  • Application quit in FCE and iMovie

During capture sessions, I am experiencing application quits in both FCE 2.0.3 and iMovie HD. Since both programs did this. I thought this might be a hard drive issue. Maybe? Since both programs were effected I did not see how crashing preferences could help.
    Info
    eMac 10.3.8 RAM 1GB
My hard drive has 90 of 150GB available. The first external HD had 58 or 200GB available, so I changed external drives to one that has over 250 GB of 500GB available, but the quits continue.
    Here is my workflow.
I like to do my first rough edit in iMovie for the destructive editing ability (I can not store a whole season of my son's sport on any drive so I make a first pass to reduce size.) Then I import into FCE in April to make a team video.
I have not upgraded to 10.3.9 because I heard of Safari issues. I had no need to buy 10.4, but would consider it more stability ( I'm not interested in Widgets.)
To any kind souls, please comment on any of the above, however the main issue is stopping these quits. (At least in iMovie it saves files created since the last save in a trash bin, but they are out of sequence. In FCE, they are lost.)
    Thanks
    Bill

Bill, welcome. This forum is for neither of those applications. But let me ask you this: are your externals firewire drives or USB's?
I suspect that a whole lot of quits in both apps mean you have corrupted preferences. Have you trashed prefs and repaired permissions?

  • Satellite A45 - CPU usage is high and applications slow

    Hi all,
I'm trying to debug a hardware problem on my Toshiba Satellite A45. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, but I don't believe this is OS or software related.
THE PROBLEM: CPU usage is high and applications slow to a crawl after using a memory intensive application for a few minutes, i.e. viewing a video or playing a game. Basically, anything that might use the screen a lot. If instead I work only from a command prompt, even when the application might be doing a lot of work, I don't encounter this problem. After shutting down all application, CPU usage is still higher than normal (90% idle, should normally be about 99% idle).
Xorg typically now showing about 6% usage (normally < 2%). If I at any time after this try to work in any application, usage is still bogged down. Only a reset gets me back to normal.
Note: My system had always worked fine, and I had not done any software installation or changes when this started happening.
However, the laptop did go through an 800 mile round trip in the back of the car in a padded laptop bag.
DEBUG: This doesn't seem to be RAM as I have replaced RAM and reseated the RAM, and the problem still occurs. This doesn't seem to be the Hard Drive as I can try to run from a Live CD (no HDD usage) and everything still slows to a crawl.
HELP: I'm not sure how to debug from here.
I don't have extra bits of hardware to do swaps.
Any ideas how to further debug this?
    Thanks,
    Grommit

    Hi grommit
What do You think about the possibility that your PC is becoming overheated?
To me this sounds like such a scenario.
Your using an application which is intensive - which makes the unit warm up a lot probably.
After that everything is sluggish. This is what may happen when cooling is not sufficient - the CPU is throttled to reduce heat generation. And the effect is that the unit works pretty slow.
May I suggest that You try to let the unit be off for some time before trying it again - I don't know your possibilities, but I would put it on the balcony or on the floor below an open window too cool it really much.
Then try again from whatever media you like.
The result? Good performance for a while again? Then either clean the cooling module yourself or have a repair workshop do this for You.
Good luck and stay with Linux! :)
    BR Tom

  • Applications quitting and renders stopping

I am animating using Maya and having problems with the software bailing out on me after a few frames are rendered. The problem is consistent no matter how I set up the program.
It is also giving me problems in FCP and Motion. Can't find material or plug-ins.
I have reset the pram and updated permissions. Used disc warrior to fix what I thought might be the problem with a drive. All to no avail.
I am thinking that it is a problem with the logic board. But, I am unclear as if these would be symptoms of that issue. Any Wisdom out there for me?

I got the same error messages as well... Someone posted that reinstalling the FULL PACKAGE of the 10.5.1 fixes the issues... Perhaps you could try it... Remember: Backup your important data before doing that...
For your information, I didn't reinstall the full package since I don't have any problems whatsoever (no application quiting and stuffs)...

  • Application launches and immediately quits without any message

I have an old powerbook G4 which I use for only one purpose- to run Mathcad 6 in the Classic environment. (Mathsoft discontinued supporting Macs many years ago so I'm stuck.)
Today I started it up, launched Mathcad, it flashes its startup window then disappears and I'm back in OS X. Other Classic applications run OK.
I seem to remember this happening many years ago with an application, but cannot at all remember what it took to fix it. This particular application has been running flawlessly for me, but now I can't get it to do anything more than flash the startup screen for a second and then quit.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    George O.

    Top 2 tips,

God tips, Simon. However, setting monitor resolutions may have actually been a culprit in corrupting a preference file for the Classic Application.
Recently I just acquired a Dell monitor replacement for my G3, and when I went and changed monitor settings and graphics options the graphics for the App. to optimize it it got corrupted. I tried and tried resetting monitor and graphics settings to no avail of the corrupted graphics. Finally I remembered to trash the preference file for the app. and restarted and it was fine.
    [Here|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61528] is the article about
memory allocation for Classic. I generally set my higher demanding applications
using the Apple menu calculator to 3Xs the Suggested Size in the Preferred Size and 2Xs the Suggested in Minimum Size. You can do this really easy too by Copying
and pasting within Classic Calculator and using the keyboard instead of the mouse
    for Classics small calculator.

  • Mail, Safari and other Applications Quit Unexpectedly

    Hello,
First it was Safari that would quit ever now and then. Then all of a sudden Mail and my Hammerfall DSP mixer app is quitting. I am on Tiger and I don't know why this is happening. Maybe it was one of the Mac Osx updates?
I did a search here and I tried emptying out the cach. I also dumped some of those unnecessary fonts. Problem is still here.
Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?
Right now it is 3 apps that "Quit Unexpectedly". Mail, Safari and Hammerfall DSP Mixer ( for my sound card to run ).
    Help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Johnny

Check Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to
    launch for troubleshooting steps.
Many of those things like fonts don't really apply to me since I swapped out the hard drive and reinstalled Tiger.
I did do the Apple Hardware Test and it found bad Ram in slot 2. I proceeded to take out the Ram in slot 2. The problem is still alive and kicking.
One new thing I noticed is when in Safari it will crash as I start to type in the Google search window. It doesn't crash if I type in the top address bar. Only when I type inside the window. It's a weird thing. I kept re-launching and as soon as I would type 1 letter into the search window of Google it would crash.
Mail won't even open for peek. Same with all the other apps.
I spoke with a Apple Tech and he said it might be the Logic board!
    Thanks,
    Johnnny
