Dual data rate stream problem

I am streaming a live source that is being encoded at 2 different data rates. One is a 360Kbps stream, the other is a 28Kbps stream (for dial up users). I have created a reference movie that contains URLs for each of these streams. The high speed one is characterized as requiring 384Kbps DSL/Cable. The second is set to 56Kbps Modem/ISDN.
I have a Mac Mini and a PC on my desktop, both connected to my streaming server directly via the LAN. Both are running Quicktime 7.4.1. Both have their Quicktime Preference for Streaming Speed set for Automatic (The Quicktime default).
The PC always selects the high speed stream. The Mac always selects the low speed stream. The only way to make the Mac pick the correct stream is to set the streaming speed preference manually. I have even tried rebuilding the reference movie, setting the required data rate to as low as 112Kbps, but still the Mac refuses to believe it can handle that speed and picks the other one. The bandwidth to the server is actually in the Mbps range, and the stream plays just fine when it is forced to play through manual configuration.
Does anyone have any insight into why this is a problem? Better yet, does anybody have a way of making this work that doesn't involve having to explain to every user how to change their preferences?
By the way, it's not just my desktop Mac that behaves this way, the same is true for systems coming in from the outside. I'm not sure that it is necessarily clear cut that Macs always fail and PCs always succeed, or what the story is with other Quicktime releases.

How about some more information on the memory you purchasaed.  If you purchased (2) 2GB sticks of memory the motherboard only supports 1GB of memory per slot and they will not function properly.  Is the Patriot RAM single side or double side and did it work before you installed the 2GB modules??

  • ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software Problem

    I'm having a weird issue. I use a X200t tablet with Windows 7 Profession 64-bit.
Apparently my current "ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software" is Version. 6.2.1.2900.
Thinkvantage System Update wants me to download and install Version 6.2.1.3100.
However, it tries and I get Error 1935 and it rolls back. Now when I start windows I get an alert about BTTray.exe not loading.
Of course I searched this problem, but it seems to be some ancient thing (years old) and I've never had a problem before with any of the Bluetooth updates.
I did notice that in past versions people said when they tried to uninstall the old version and install the new one, it just wiped their hard drive. I don't want to risk that so I thought I'd check here if anyone knew what was going on.
    Thanks!

  • Data rate when creating Quicktime h.264: difference between download and streaming ?

I've got a question on data rate setting when creating a quicktime movie with h.264 codec:
In the Compression settings dialog I can restrict the data rate to a certain value (e.g. in my case I use 20.000 kbit/s for creating a HD1080i movie).
There is an additional drop box "Optimized for" where I can select between "download", "streaming" and some other value.
Is anybody aware of the exact meaning of these settings ? My impression is, that using "download" I set the average bit-rate, allowing much higher bit-rates in peaks, while "streaming" sets a maximum bit-rate. Is that correct ? or are any other parameters affected by this setting ?
I now discovered, that the output file when using "streaming" with restriction of 20.000 kbit/s leads to a file with average bitrate of only approx 17.000 kbit/s (while it's more or less exactly 20.000 when using the "download" setting). Does that mean, that the overall quality of my output file would be worse ? or would only peak rates be affected (e.g. scenes with a lot of movement) and the overall quality remains the same ?
Happy to learn if anyone has any experiences / best practices on this topic.

Restrict isn't, it seems, a hard limit. When I specify 18Mbps it seems to run up to 21Mbps. But, that's fine since it's certainly isn't excessive and if I really cared I could set it at 15Mbps.
I suspect it might be more accurate with 2-pass. Also, i never ever use the Apple codec. i use x264 which allows more encoding tools. And, even it is not a super good H.264 encoder.
Using rates under 2400Mbps is IMHO asking for the near impossible for good quality SD video.

  • MP3 data rate problem - and solution

One of the things on my "To Do" list for this vacation was to rip every one of our CDs and put them onto MP3 CDs for the cars. I hate having those CD towers next to the entertainment center. It seems so, well, old fashioned. You know?
So, I wisely ripped them to the relatively high quality 320Kb/s. Wisely? Uh oh. Apparently not.
It seems that the MP3 player in the car can't handle that high a bit rate (they skip) and I was going to have to rip them again. What? No! Not at all. I have been saved. I downloaded a free file converter called Switch from NCH Software.
What a life saver. It allowed me to convert thousands of songs at one time. Not only that, it allowed me to keep the same directory structure. I had the files all well organized by what CD I wanted to write them to in a folder called Music for Cars and it allowed me to convert them into a folder named Music for Cars 128.
I just told it the input and output upper level folder, what the data rate was that I wanted to use. and I am just sitting back while my relatively fast PC takes about 5 seconds to convert each file. This is so cool. I still have the 320Kb/s to play on my PC, but I will also have 128Kb/s to play in the car - where, let's face it - the quality isn't quite as important when you live in California since most of the time the windows are open and you are competing with the wind noise anyway. Right? Even if my 59 year old ears could hear the difference between 320 and 128. I listened and I swear I can't really tell. Perhaps at a higher volume. I suppose I need to rip White Rabbit (the greatest rock and roll song of all time) and play it at a very high volume, I might hear the difference.
The software doesn't seem to have downloaded any additional, annoying programs, toolbars, or crud like that.
Isn't it amazing what programs are out there for free? And they work great. I would really have hated to have to rip all of those CDs again. And converting even one folder at a time would have been time consuming. This way is just so easy.

    Jim,
I agree with you on 100% the price/quality of downloads.  However I look at it like this:
While it is “only” $.99, I’ve though that is a lot considering I’m not really getting anything tangible, (like no cover art, no lyrics or liner notes, and no physical medium)  But I also thought how many times I would buy an entire CD/Album for 1-2 songs on it.  Then it becomes much cheaper to just get the 1-2 songs I want, and the only ones I would have played.
I remember the days long ago when my friends and I would ogle the cover art and try to figure out what the artist meant.  These days I think the artist has nothing to do with the cover art and it was probably choosen by the record label.
If I need the lyrics, I just Google it.  Once again, I don’t to have to deal with storing the paper and plastic.
I like the fact that I don’t have physical media cluttering the house.  I prefer it in electronic form.  This is just me.
I would not call myself a music aficionado who can hear the difference. For those who can, I admire and envy them.  I don’t have that gift.  (I have trouble tuning my daughter’s guitar, even with an electronic tuning aid)
I realize everyone is different.  I collect/admire things others probably ask “why?”.  There is no right or wrong on tastes, and this is what makes life interesting.

  • Zen Style M300 Bluetooth Streaming Problems

    +~Hi
I've got a new 8gb Zen Style M300 player which I've upgraded with the latest .00.6e firmware.
I have been able to pair to a blueTooth headset (Nokia BH24 http://europe.nokia.com/find-product...s#Connectivity?) and it will connect every time.
However the streaming is choppy (something like 0 pulses per second) so the BT is unuseable - I've turned off my wifi etc in the house in case this was interfering, but that didn't help
Has anyone managed successfull BT streaming...
This headset supports the following standards:
    Bluetooth version:
    2. with enhanced data rate (EDR)
    Bluetooth profiles:
    Handsfree profile (HFP) .5
    Headset profile (HSP) .
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) .2
Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) .0.

Proximity & different headphones don't seem to help, and the included audio-book shows the same problem...
However some good news : the M300 streams OK to a friend's Jawbone Jambox speakers so it'slooks like the BT on the M300 does meet some of the BT standards.
My Samsung Q330 Laptop streams OK to the Nokia BH24 headset, which shows that this device?is not faulty.
It just looks like that the BT streaming from the M300 somehow?doesn't match the BT of the BH24
Specs for the jambox are these, which appear to be the same as the BH24 on my st post - strange

  • Changing a clip's data rate

I imported an MPEG into FCP 4.5, and though it's a PAL DV clip [720x576], it seems to have come in at a higher data rate than all my other clips [6.9MB/sec instead of 3.6]. This is making it difficult to play. How do I change the data rate down to 3.6MB/sec where it should be and where it will play properly?
    g4 dual 1 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

you can't just change the data rate willy-nilly. your problem stems from the fact that this is an mpeg - what flavour of mpeg - and it can't be an mpeg and PAL DV. you need to convert that to an editable form of video.

  • LTE oversaturated? 3G data rates on LTE in Charlotte?

For the last couple of days I have noticed extremely slow LTE rates that are often even slower than 3G in some cases - particularly the uptown area, but also in the North Charlotte area where I live. I have confirmed the same issue with multiple people who also have Thunderbolts that they are experiencing drastically reduced data rates; however, I don't think this is phone specific. I remember just last week I could pull down at least 5-10mbps and send back even more. The rates I've been seeing recently are <=.1mbps down and about the same up. That's absurd. I can't even stream music at low quality at that speed.
What's going on Verizon? It's formal announcement time to keep your customers informed.

Well, I may have figured it out partially. Something has happened to Verizon's coverage in various parts of uptown Charlotte - i.e. they're practically nonexistent. I can walk up and down College St and I find that some areas have next to no bandwidth capability whatsoever and others are full strength. This has absolutely nothing to do with the buildings as I have been all over uptown for the last year I have owned this phone and I never had a problem getting full LTE anywhere uptown. I would guess that the towers in the area have been re-prioritized or perhaps Verizon is no longer leasing near as much bandwidth in certain areas? Whatever the reason I have been reduced to practically zero coverage and now have ~1X data speeds unless I walk a block or two away. Awesome.

  • Encoded video does not have expected data rate

    Hi
I've been encoding with Flash Media Encoder (CS3) recently
and come across a contradiction which I can't seem to make sense
of. Can it be possible that the longer the video, the harder it is
for the encoder to maintain data rate?
This was revealed when I started using FMS2 (space on a
shared server as opposed to my own server). I encoded a video at
what I thought was a data rate which was within my data rate limit
for my stream and it stuttered on playback over the stream. The FMS
supplier informed me that the FLV I thought I'd encoded at 400kbps
video 96 kbps audio actually had a data rate of around 700kbps in
total. But if I open the video in a FLV player, and look at info,
it still shows the setting I originally intended. However, my
supplier suggested checking data rate using this equation:
(filesize in MB x 8)/videoduration in seconds = video
    datarate in kbits/sec
If you apply this calculation to my video it does indeed show
    what they said:
    Using Flash Media Encoder:
Encoded at 400kbps video - 96 kbps audio
    Compressed filesize = 26,517 kbytes
    Duration = 240 seconds
CALCULATION GIVES DATE RATE OF 880k/b a second
(note file contains an alpha channel)
Furthermore, applied to a shorter video, we get the following
    more logical results:
Encoded at 400kbps video - 96 kbps audio
    Compressed filesize = 6,076 kbytes
    Duration = 90 seconds
CALCULATION GIVES DATA RATE OF 527 kb/sec
    (no alpha channel)
The only differences between the two vids is the alpha
channel and the duration. Somethings doesn't add up here.
    Any clues?
    Thanks
    Simon

I've just partly answered my own question. Funny how writing
a post can help you think your problem through sometimes.
The issue is the alpha channel, which adds to the file size
thereby making the data rate "incorrect". In other words, the same
file encoded without the alpha channel provides the expected
results. I guess this changes my question to: How do I create
predicatable data rates when encoding using an alpha channel. I
could just estimate of course and see what comes out, but is there
    a better way?
    SImon.

  • Multiclip Dropped Frames/Data Rates from from FW 800, 7200rpm Drive

I am using an external Lacie 7200 rpm "Little Big Disk" .. Editing DV Multiclips in Final Cut (3.6 MB/sec data rate per clip... 7 clips/streams) But it won't play back all at once, anything over 15 MB/sec data transfer rate (as I watch Activity Monitor) it starts choking and dropping frames til it just freezes. Lacie claims that this drive handles a steady 80MB/sec transfer rate... All I need to do all these streams is 26 MB/sec (That's the speed it does at work from an XSAN and no problem playing back 7 streams of DV) Is the bog down in my system the FW800, my RAM, processor, or the Cache of the drive? (16MB)

Do you have any other FireWire devices (incl. cameras) plugged into other ports on the computer or on the drive itself? There's only one FireWire bus on a G5, and it's shared between the FW800 port and the FW400 port on the back in addition to the FW400 port on the front.
If you have other devices plugged in, they can cause the entire bus to slow down to the speed of the slowest connected device.

  • Audio data rate

Upon completing a capture, a warning window indicates that the audio data rate does not match that of the source tape. A loss of sync could occur. How do I make the correct adjustments? I'm capturing from a Sharp VL-Z3 via firewire. Also, how do I monitor audio IN during capture. I can only hear audio via my camera's speaker. Meters indicate audio coming in on Final Cut and clips play back. Could this be related to the afore mentioned issue?

    Welcome to the forum,
I'm not familer with your camera but many cameras allow the recording of 32khz audio as well as the more standard 48khz version. This audio shift happens when you put the camera into LP recording mode.
There is a way to turn on audio monitoring during capture (check in the manual) but it will not change your problem. You can not change the nature of the audio while capturing and, monitoring while capturing does nothing to the audio stream.
If your audio is not being recorded at 48khz but you need it to be in that format to use the Easy Setup Settings for Editing DV, you can export just the audio portion (using quicktime export), open it in Quicktime Pro, conform (transform) it to 48khz - then reimport the resulting file back into FCP.
If this is not your problem, please offer up more information and we'll do what we can.
    cheers,

  • Older Apple TV and iTunes streaming problem

I've set up a Mac to act as an iTunes streaming host, mostly for standard-definition video.  Other computers and iOS devices on my home network can play back the content with no issues.  However, two older (hard disk based) Apple TVs we have are unable to play video from the iTunes streaming server.
One of the Apple TVs is connected via ethernet, the other via wifi.  They can play audio just fine via iTunes streaming.  With video, however, they either lock up for extended periods of time or play the audio while showing a frozen video frame.
Since audio plays back fine but video doesn't, I'm wondering if the video data rate is too high for these older Apple TV boxes.  The video is standard definition in h.264 format encoded by HandBrake.  The settings used for the video are:
    Video codec:  H.264 (x264)
    Framerate:  same as source
    Quality:  Constant quality (RF: 20)
Can anyone think of something I might be able to do (other than re-encode all the video at lower bitrates) that might help?

What bitrate are they, the Apple TV 1 is stated to play video up to 5 Mbps, but I've tested video at 11 Mbps without any problems. You might also try re-encoding a small part of the original source file using other conversion software at the same bitrate to see if it's a problem with handbrake.

  • Max Data Rate: AGP 2x?!

Bought myself a new MSI-KT6 Delta a few weeks ago (MSI-6590), and have had no problems until now.
First up, my GeForce 4 Ti 4600 decided to suddenly die. Random characters on the screen in text mode, flickery colours and corrupt pixels everywhere. Windows wouldn't detect it properly anymore.
Bought a new Powercolor Radeon 9600 XT with VIVO today. Downloaded the new drivers, and loaded up some Battlefield, all good. Runs nice and smooth. COD, Quake 3, etc, no problems at all.
Halo, however... BAD. Even with the basic graphics settings and no Pixel-Shading, it runs at 4 frames a second, and nothing I do changes this, from lowest to highest with Pixel-Shaders 2.0. Although there's a visual difference, it's just as slow.
So I loaded up ATI control Panel and used SmartGart to enable 8x and Fast-Writes... Rebooted, lots of flickering screen, and Windows XP is now software-rendering everything (Transparent menus take 100% CPU to fade in)
Wait for SmartGart to fix my graphics again, and it's all back to 4x and no fast-write.
Loaded up SiSoft Sandra, to check the settings in there...
Mainboard: "Max Data Rate: AGP 2x"
AGP Card: "Data Transfer Modes Support: 1x, 2x"
"AGP Bus is unused or AGP card not fully AGP compatible"
Er... should this be right? BIOS wont let me select an AGP speed, it's "Auto" and I can't select it. I'm a little concerned that my Motherboard may have been damaged! I'll go get the latest Halo Patch, but it doesn't change the fact that I can't use 8x or Fast-Write.
I'm a little apprehensive about flashing my BIOS, made more difficult by the fact that I have no working floppy drive.
    CPU: AMD 2600+
    RAM: 2x512mb DDR 333MHz Kingston
    AlphaGremlin

Well, I updated the VIA drivers, and an updated Sandra. AGP is running at 8x, and Fast-Writes are enabled! I don't know what the hell SmartGart was going on about, but it appears to slunk away and disappeared completely from the ATI control panel since the last reinstall of drivers.
So there's one problem solved... but I don't know what's up with Halo... I can set it to the lowest settings and it still runs like an elephant with three legs, even with the -useff option for Fixed Function shaders... ah well, that's a matter for another forum, eh?
Interesting note: Sandra reports my 120gb drive as 605gb... should I be trusting it?

Can someone tell me what is the data rate supported by PCI 6533. i mean transfer the data from peripheral to the hard disk of the PC.

    Hi,
Here are a couple Knowledge Bases that address this performance specification. I just posted the knowledge bases today so they might take a day or so before they are live. Hope that helps. Have a good day.

  • I have a question about Data Rates.

    Hello All.
This is a bit of a noob question I'm sure. I don't think I really understand Data Rates and how it applies to Motion... therefore I'm not even sure what kind of questions to ask. I've been reading up online and thought I would ask some questions here. Thanks to all in advance.
I've never really worried about Data Rates until now. I am creating an Apple Motion piece with about 15 different video clips in it. And 1/2 of them have alpha channels.
What exactly is Data Rate? Is it the rate in which video clip data is read (in bits/second) from the Disc and placed into my screen? In Motion- is the Data Rate for video only? What if the clip has audio? If a HDD is simply a plastic disc with a dye read by "1" laser... how come my computer can pull "2" files off the disc at the same time? Is that what data transfer is all about? Is that were RAM comes into play?
I have crunched my clips as much as I can. They are short clips (10-15seconds each). I've compressed them with the Animation codec to preserve the Alpha channel and sized them proportionally smaller (320x240). This dropped their data rate significantly. I've also taken out any audio that was associated with them.
Is data rate what is slowing my system down?
The data rates are all under 2MBs. Some are as low as 230Kbs. They were MUCH higher. However, my animation still plays VERY slowly.
    I'm running a 3GigRam Powerbook Pro 2.33GHz.
I store all my media on a 1TB GRaid Firewire 800 drive. However for portability I'm using a USB 2 smartdisk external drive. I think the speed is 5200rpm.
I'm guessing this all plays into the speed at which motion can function.
If I total my data rate transfer I get somewhere in the vicinity of 11MBs/second. Is that what motion needs for it to play smoothly a 11MBs/second data connection? USB 2.0 is like what 480Mbs/second. So there is no way it's going to play quickly. What if I played it from my hard drive? What is the data rate of my internal HDD?
I guess my overall question is.
#1. Is my thinking correct on all of these topics? Do my bits, bytes and megs make sense. Is my thought process correct?
#2. Barring getting a new machine or buying new hardware. What can I do to speed up this workflow? Working with 15 different video clips is bogging Motion down and becoming frustrating to work with. Even if only 3-4 of the clips are up at a time it bogs things down. Especially if I throw on a glow effect or something.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    -Fraky

Data rate DOES make a difference, but I'd say your real problem has more to do with the fact that you're working on a Powerbook. Motion's real time capabilities derive from the capability of the video card. Not the processor. Some cards do better than others, but laptops are not even recommended for running Motion.
To improve your workflow on a laptop will be limited, but there are a few things that you can try.
Make sure that thumbnails and previews are turned off.
Make sure that you are operating in Draft Mode.
Lower the display resolution to half, or quarter.
Don't expect to be getting real time playback. Treat it more like After Effects.
Compressing your clips into smaller Animations does help because it lowers the data rate, but you're still dealing with the animation codec which is a high data rate codec. Unfortunately, it sounds necessary in your case because you're dealing with alpha channels.
The data rate comes into play with your setup trying to play through your USB drive. USB drives are never recommended for editing or Motion work. Their throughput is not consistent enough for video work. a small FW drive would be better, though your real problem as I said is the Powerbook.
If you must work on the powerbook, then don't expect real-time playback. Instead, build your animation, step through it, and do RAM previews to view sections in real time.
    I hope this helps.
    Andy
