I have a 23 inch display hooked to my MacBook Pro. I recently got a second display. What do I need to run dual monitors? How do I hook up the second one?

I'm about to buy a 27" i-Mac. I would like to connect my 30" Cinema Display to it as a second monitor. What will I need to do that? Will this slow down the overall performance?
The new iMacs do not come with a MiniDisplayPort, they have Thunderbolt, so unless you are talking about purchasing one of the previous generation iMacs such as this refurbished model in the online Apple store, it won't work. And yes, if you are going to get the full range of video resolutions you will need the Dual-Link version.

Can I use dual 24" displays as an extended desktop with my MacBook?
I have a 2.4 GHz MacBook I purchased this summer. I was considering using it for my desktop needs, but I need to have a two-monitor extended desktop. I don't particularly care for the thought of using the notebook's monitor in addition to the 24" display. I'd rather have dual 24" displays, but in talking with the "chat" line on the store website, they said this is impossible to have an extended desktop this way. I'm stubborn and can't help but think that is not impossible with the appropriate work-around.
Suggestions? Thoughts?
Thanks so much.The only option for dual external displays on a Mac laptop is the Matrox DualHead2Go. But with a MacBook, you could only get a maximum of 1024x768 on the two montors, a completely waste of a 24" monitor IMO.

2 displays for Mac Pro. What do you recommend? What do I need?
I have an older Mac Pro (2007ish - Model Identifier: MacPro1,1) with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. I currently use an old Apple 22" Cinema Display (1 generation - clear plastic style). Anyway, I want to upgrade my display and switch to a dual monitor setup. So I'm looking for two displays in the 22-24" range. I have some questions about what & how.
First, will my graphics card support two displays? If not, what do I need instead?
Second, what displays do you all recommend? (I'm a graphic & web designer) My budget would be in the range of about $1000 per display.
Lastly, I was really hoping to hold out for the new Apple displays but Apple doesn't seem to be moving very fast in that arena. I've actually been waiting a long time for the upgrade and now the whole mini-display port thing has me wondering what to do.I'd look at replacing the 7300GT, either ATI 4870 or.... ? before the 7300 bites the dust, and because Apple/ATI driver support for OpenGL and upcoming technology (the 7300GT w/ 256MB is also down bottom rung of ladder).

im sure this question has been answered i just cant find it. i have a 21.5" imac and i am looking to buy a 23" apple monitor to have dual display. i know the imac has a mini display port, im just not sure what else i need that would hook up to the monitor. can someone help?

It can be done with analog but not digital thanks to "good 'ol" HDCP copy protection which apple (and most other manufacturers) unfortunately respect.
So you can take the analog output from your cable box (component -- 5 cables -- if it has it but generally they all have composite -- 3 cables) and feed it into some kind of converter or into some appropriate pci card for your mac pro. But none of them are going to let you directly use the HDMI output from the box to your computer.
Bottom line, no single cord is going to work and it will never be the higher quality digital picture you get on your tv.
Some qualification: There are boxes that I think support hdmi input. Look at Blackmagic. But I still don't think you can get around the HDCP from the cable box (might depend on the kind of cable box). -

I have a MacBook Pro and OS10.6 and am trying to log into a site that requires me to enter a code from a picture ... problem is all I get on the screen is a white '?' in a blue box. What do I need to display the picture?
Reload the page. If it doesn't load, choose Activity from Safari's Window menu, find that picture in the list, and see what it says to the right; this may reveal what the problem is.

First, though, you need to purchase a retail disc version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in order to download upgrade to OS X 10.8.

Use Software update, in OS X Preferences Pane to update to the latest version of OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard before upgrading OS to 10.8 Mountain Lion.
OS X 10,6.8 will install the Mac App Store icon in OS X's Application Dock.
From there, you can launch the Mac App Store and download and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Use Sofware Update again to update to the latest version of Mountain Lion.
Be advised, you may want to play around in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard before updating to OS X 10.8 Mt. Lion.
Some users aren't happy with the Hybrid OS X/iOS functionality of OS X 10.8 Mounatin Lion.
If you upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and aren't happy with it, the only way to return to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is wipe the internal drive, reformat it, then reinstall OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
You might want to consider purchasing an external FireWire hard drive, format it so you can install OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard and all of its updates onto the internal drive, use a copying/cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to make a duplicate of your internal drive to the external FireWire drive as a backup that you can reinstall onto your internal drive just in case you find you are not happy with the look and functionality of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
