Dual disk drives -- unmounted/ejected drive keeps waking up

Hi, I just got a 2010 15" MBP and installed a secondary hard drive in place of the SuperDrive. My problem is that even though I'm not using the secondary drive and it's unmounted/ejected, it keeps waking up / spinning up every few minutes (like 3-4 minutes). I configured the drives to sleep after a minute idle, so it goes to sleep within a short while after waking up... but still it's quite strange that this is happenning...
Can anyone point to the reason this happens, or give ideas of where to look for clues regarding what's making the drive wake up?
Thanks!
EDIT: I kept searching and found this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11437456 -- my problem is similar... although I'm not using any 3rd-party software to control the drive.

That is common and in my sleep tips;
"USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit."

  • Help! 2nd optical drive not ejecting; drive tray stuck!

I have just installed a LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165P6S drive in the second bay. I have removed the front tray panel, but when trying to eject from the drive, the tray fouls the case opening, and will not open fully. Only after some vigorous pulling upward on the tray, will it then open fully. This is not ideal, as the flimsy plastic won't take much of that kind of abuse. It seems that Apple have not made enuogh allowances for slight differences in design of dvd drives, or have I done something wrong? Is this just a case of incompatible design; should I try another burner, or is it a problem with the Mac Pro?
Seems that Apple could've made the bay openings a little bigger, to avoid this problem. Why didn't they? Most annoying.
Anyone else experienced any problems? Anyone got any ideas?

This Pioneer of which you speak, it seems to be the drive to go for, from what I've read. I just tried the Liote-On, to see if it's any quieter than the Sony unit (It is; it couldn't be any louder!), but the tray seems to be a bit too low for the bay door. Oh well. I had the Lite-On lying around spare, so I'm not too annoyed. I'll try the Pioneer that you mention, thanks. Is it a lot quieter? Trying to watch a dvd at night, the Sony drive is so loud, I have to have the volume up higher than I want to; it's going through a hi-fi, so does get a bit noisy.
Thanks mate. I'll swap the drive for the Pioneer, and see hoe it goes.

  • Mavericks and unmounting external drive issues upon sleep

    Greetings fellow Mavericks users,
I'm hoping someone here can provide some insight as to how to correct the issue I'm experiencing.
    Little background:
I was using 10.6.8 for years on a 2008 Mac Pro.  I saw no reason to update the OS until I recently acquired a USB 3.0 PCI card and an external drive.  In order to use my new hardware, I had no choice but to upgrade to a new version of OSX.  Rather than spend money, I took advantage of the free 10.9.2 upgrade available for my machine.  The upgrade went surprisingly well with no major hiccups or problems encountered.  Yes, a few apps and programs I had running prior to the upgrade were no longer compatible but in the grand scheme of things, my Mac Pro was still alive and kicking along with my most important programs and data.  In fact, the upgrade to 10.9.2 fixed a sleep issue I had with 10.6.8 which required the use of an app called PleaseSleep.  I don't need that app anymore as the machine goes to sleep and wakes up fine.
Now, on to my dilemma.  Prior to the upgrade, I was using an external USB 2.0 drive to house media that I'd share between multiple network devices around the house via SMB (AFP stinks in this regard, hence my refusal to use it); i.e. BoxeeBox.  I had run out of space on the USB2 drive hence the need to move everything to my new external USB3 drive that's connected to an internal USB3 PCI controller. The first problem I ran into was that Mavericks now uses Apple's own iteration of Samba (SMB2).  After a bit of head scratching and research, I used an application called SMBUp as a replacement to Apple's SMB implementation.  That's one problem solved.  The next thing that I kept running into was that whenever the machine would sleep then wake up again, I'd get an annoying "Disk was not properly ejected" error message.  After more head scratching and research, I've discovered that this appears to be a bug in OSX and how the OS interfaces with 3rd party USB controllers.  Fine.  I purchased a small app called Jettison which for all intents and purposes unmounts any external drives automatically before allowing the system to sleep.  This is where my long-winded (apologies) description above starts to come into play.  Now that I have the SMB issue figured out and am using Jettison to eject this USB3 drive when the machine sleeps, I've discovered that I'll still get the "Disk did not properly eject" error message despite Jettison IF there are users connected to the USB3 media drive.  Is there a work around this where I can either get Jettison or Mavericks to kill the network connection to the share drive before it's unmounted prior to the machine sleeping?
    TL:DR?
Using Jettison with Mavericks, I'm still getting "Disk did not eject properly" when waking the machine from sleep mode.  Any way to fix this?
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions provided.

I had the same problem with Time Machine and solved it by enabling "Enable Power Nap" in Energy Saver:
    System Preferences...
    Energy Saver
    Restore Defaults
Check "Enable Power Nap: While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."

  • Unmounting/ejecting external FW drives . .

    Hi,
i hope I've found the right place for this question. I have 6 external FW backup drives hanging off my Mac Pro. Four of these rarely need access, so i put together a small applescript with which i can eject these four drives, reducing noise and heat in my office. This works - the volumes unmount, they appear grayed-out in Disk utility, and they physically spin down Trouble is, something at some point every day various commonplace Finder actions get them spinning back up again. They don't remount, but if i feel the drives, they are again warm and vibrating - they're spinning. I've been using the "eject disk" applescript command.
Can anyone suggest a better way to do this, such that these drives will stay properly ejected until I need them?
    Thanks!
    Malcolm

would a cheaper alternative be to hang all 4 disks off a FW hub, keep them powered down, then just power one or another of them up as required?
Disconnecting the FW enclosures with the use of a FW hub should work. However, moving all of your data to a SATA interface will provide substantially faster performance and higher reliability. The hot swap trays provided with the SeriTek/5PM provide the user with virtually unlimited storage expansion as different disk sets can be inserted as needed.
Many FireWire users find it hard to justify moving to SATA based on the cost. However, if you examine what was paid for several FW enclosures you will find that these units cost near the same amount yet they provide less than half the performance and do not include the same hot swap flexibility. In addition, the SeriTek/5PM is built like a tank and will last many years longer than a standard FireWire enclosure.
As a long time user of both FireWire and SATA enclosures it is hard for me to recommend the use of FireWire disks when the user requires more data space than a single FireWire enclosure can provide. In my experience, while FireWire daisy chaining usually works it is slow, clumsy and prone to failure.

  • Osx keeps losing favorites after ejecting drive

    Hi All,
OSX 10.8.4 and maybe other's?  I have an external USB disk connect directly to the machine and I can add folders that reside on it to the sidebar favorites without issue.  However if I unmount the drive they all disappear and do not return upon reconnecting the drive.
Is there a way to have them stay in or return to the sidebar?
    Thanks!

There should be a "Where" value as well.
_If not go to Go > Utilities > Disk Utility.
_Once you open Disk Utility, on the left you will see an icon for any drive mounted on the computer.
__Look for the name of this phantom drive that keeps showing up. It should be here.
_Click on it once and then look down at the bottom of the Disk Utility window, you should see a line that says "Mount Point". Let me know what this says.
In addition look on the left to see if the name of this drive is indented underneath another icon. If so click on that icon and see if there is information at the bottom of the screen that says "Disk Image Path" with a directory path "/blah blah/blah blah/" etc.
Also, check in Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Make sure the drive is not listed here.

  • Has any one come up with a solution to the "the disk was not ejected properly" when using time machine with an iMac and seagate back up drive?

I recently bought an iMac and love it.
Only proplem I have is I keep getting an error message "the disk was not ejected properly"
Everything is backing up fine on my Seagate 2TB external USB drive.
Each time there is access on the seagate and it stops in between needing to back up again I get this message.
    Can anyone help?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, it has to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Automatically ejecting or unmounting a drive on shut down?

    Greetings,
Is there a way to write a script for automatically ejecting or unmounting a drive on shut down?
I have a couple of firewire external drives that need to be unmounted before I shut down the computer and sometimes I forget (running the risk of losing data).
Is it best to do it with Applescript or Automator?
    Thanks folks!
G5 1.8 GHz Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition 256MB AGP

    I'm highly confused here.
Part of the clean shutdown process is to
unmount any mounted drives. Adding a logoutHook
script isn't going to change that - it would just do
manually what the OS would do automatically.
Now an unclean shutdown such as a kernel panic
or power outage isn't going to unmount your drives,
but you also don't get an opportunity to unmount the
    drives yourself.
What makes you say your drives aren't getting
    unmounted?
This may help with my question above.
I have WD drive, and this is what they recommend for me to do.

They want me to unmount the drive before I shut down.
Is there a way to write a script for automatically unmounting a drive on shut down? With a script?
    Thanks fo the replies!

  • Can't unmount external drive for Repair Disk on disk Utility. Any ideas?

What does it mean when Disk Utility says that a remote disk can not be "unmounted"?
I am trying to repair a 500GB external firewire drive. The other one I have connected works fine when I click repair disk.
    Thank you
Verify and Repair volume “500 GB”
The disk “500 GB” could not be unmounted

Open Disk Utility, select the drive in the left side list then click on the Unmount icon in the toolbar. See if that does anything. If the drive is in use then it cannot be ejected until whatever has the lock on the drive is finished with it.
If nothing is using the drive and it simply refuses to eject then open Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the Processes drop down menu. Click on the processes column to display in alphabetical order. Look for an entry such as "disk.......", select it if it's there then click on the Force Quit icon in the toolbar.
Another alternative is to shut down the computer, disconnect the drive, then restart.

  • Waking Mac from sleep, starts unmounted hard drive.

Hi there if I unmount/eject my external harddrive it powers down.  However if I my iMac goes to sleep and I wake it back up it also powers on the external harddrive which starts spinning, despite the fact it's not mounted.  I can get it to stop by going into disk utility and ejecting it again (even though it is already ejected and not showing in finder).  But this is annoying to do everytime I want to wake my computer up.
How can stop my iMac from powering on the external harddrive everytime it wakes up?

I recently started to have this problem as well.  i just started using a new imac,  ( most current version 21.5 inch.
i never had this happen with my older 17 inch imac,  even through different versions of os x including lion.
is there a way to stop my external drive from mounting and running each time i wake my mac?

  • Encrypted disk image on external drive prevents that drive from ejecting

I've tested this a few different ways, and it seems to be a rather consistent problem.
I have an external USB hard drive (seagate) and on that drive I use encrypted disk images to store my data.
(because it's a portable drive, I'm nervous I'll lose it and then someone will have access to my stuff).
So anyway, whenever I mount the sparse bundle disk image, when it comes time to eject the drive (after ejecting the disk image of course), it hangs for a while and then the Finder says it can't eject, but that I can Force Eject the drive.  When I chose to Force Eject, it works, but I don't like having to force it every time.
    Anyone know what's up?
    Thanks,
    Brian.,

Open Disk Utility > File > New >Blank Disk Image...
or use the "Option-⌘-N" Key combo (with Disk Utlity open).

  • I keep getting a (false) notification from HP Support Assistant: low disk space on C drive?

Hi, this morning upon starting up my computer the magnifying glass was hovering over the HP Support Assistant icon and usually that means it is checking for updates etc... but I noticed it turned into a yellow exclamation mark so I clicked on it and opened up HP Support Assistant. The exclamation mark was now in the "updates and tune-ups" and said there were "recommended messages available." Upon clicking this the exclamation is now on the HP messages tab and upon clicking that I am taken to a notification that says: "Low Disk Space on Primary Drive C:" So I click on it to find out more information and it says that I am running out of free disk space on my C drive and that I need to perform a disk cleanup etc...
I went to My Computer to see just how in jeopardy I was in of running out of space on my C drive. To my amazement it stated that I still had 1.27 TB of 1.35 TB available and have only used 6% of my space...
I tried emptying my recycle bin, clearing my cache, doing an actual disk cleanup, and restarting to no avail, the magnifying glass comes back after restart and the notification returns telling me that I am low on disk space in the C drive...
I have come to the conclusion that this must be a false notification but I have no idea how to get rid of it...it isn't a huge issue as it doesn't impair my usage on the computer, however, it is kind of annoying to keep seeing this notification...
Is there any way to get rid of this notification?

  • External hard drives UNMOUNT when verifying with disk utility

I have two external Lacie hard drives attached to my iMac.  One is just for general backup purposes.  The other is for Time Machine.
Today when I got home, for some reason the Time Machine drive was not appearing on my desktop.  I rebooted the computer, the Time Machine drive reappeared, I ran a back up, everything seemed to be working fine.
To make sure the disk was ok - I ran disk utility.  When I selected "verify drive" from disk utility - the disk suddenly UNMOUNTED itself, at the point of cataloging the hard drive, and the verification process stalled.  What was originally a 1 minute verification suddenly changed to a 17 minute, then a 33 minute, etc.
I tried booting up in recovery mode (Command -R at startup) and the same thing happened.  Are the drives going bad?

Actually - I think when disk utility verifies the disk - disk utility itself actually "unmounts" the disk during the verification process.  Probably so the disk cannot be accessed by anything else but disk utility.
I feel sort of silly, because what I thought was "stalling" was really just the disk utility going through its proper verification of the catalog file, multi-linked file, directories, etc.

  • How to eject a disk from an extern drive?

how to eject a disk from an extern drive? I burned a few disc and it worked then I put another blank disc and now I cannot make it eject or burn...Please help

I usually 'right click' or 'control click' on the external drive's icon that is located on the desktop, and choose 'eject' from the dropdown menu. My external drive also has a physical eject button located on the front of the drive.

  • Why is my External Disk Drive immediately Ejected?

I have an external hard drive that I've mounted many times onto my iMac running OSX 10.9.2. Now all of a sudden when I try to mount it I get the error message: "Disk not properly ejected". This even when I just connected it. When I tried again the disk image shows up for a second then I get the error message again.  I connected the drive to my laptop and no problem.
I tried to run disk utilities but the drive doesn't show up.

Do 2-3 SMC and PRAM resets with NO peripherals attached and then attempt to connect the EHD. Your cable may need replacing or there could be other issues.
