Dual disk Mac mini server - disk issue Disk Utility can't repair

ML Server.
There are two disks: Server OS HD and Server Mac HD. The Server OS HD only contains the OS and the Apple software update catalog. The Users folder is on the Server Mac HD. When the server is started / running, I go to the Disk utility > verify the Server Mac HD and I am told the Journal needs to be replayed but the volume is read only (it can't be!) and some other errors with regards to headers and bitmaps. DU then stops verifying the disk. I start the Mac mini / Server into recovery mode, try to verify the Server Mac HD. There are no problems - the "disk appears to be okay". I did this several times to same effect! How the heck do I repair the disk?

I see what you mean about live verification.
But didn't realize that the common sensical approach of separating the OS data from non-OS (user) data was an unusual config. Figured, it couldn't have any downside to it or atleast the least drawbacks.... had considered striping etc. but coulnd't see THAT much of a benefit in striping given my particular use / scenario. I have the system backed up to an external Time Machine drive (and will be doing an offsite / online backup of mostly user folders in the near future).
It would be interesting to see the results of fsck check though, like John said.
Anyway this whole thing was initiated because one of the users was getting an error of iTunes library being on a read only volume or on a locked volume. After repairing the Mac HD through Disk Utility in recovery mode (evethough no errors were found, I simply repaired it), that issue seemed to have resolved. So eventhough DU reported no errors, there must have been some small error - atleast it seems that way!
Thanks to both for the help!

  • HELP! Mac Mini Server Journaling issue during reinstall

    H E L P !
    Mac Mini Server Journaling issue...
    Hi there,
I have taken on a nearly new Mac Mini Server running Snow Leopard.
It has a RAID set up already.
When I try to reinstall the OS from the original disk the installation willl not let me select the drive as it says it is not journaled.
I have then opened Disk Utility and selected the main HD (there is one HD plus 2 Raid slices listed).
From this point on there are no options available:
The only 2 tabs above the right hand window are 'First Aid' and 'RAID'.
First Aid shows all 4 options greyed out.
Selecting the main HD and then going to File>Enable Journaling will not work as 'Enable Journaling' is greyed out.
Deleting the RAID does not work either, as the HD (mirrored RAID set) and both RAID sclices have the padlock icon next to them.
    Can anyone help?
I really need to reinstall the OS and set the machine up with a TimeMachine Capsule asap!
    Many thanks,
    Haberdashery

    Sorted!
All is good now : )

  • Mac Mini Server VPN Issues - Driving me insane

    Mac Mini Late 2012
    Late 2012
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C2034)
    Server Version 2.2(166)
Previous Issues experiencing: Before i rang apple support and spoke with enterprise support i had no luck at all for weeks getting the VPN connected.
After calling support it seemed to have something to do with my useraccount - Guided through the process of creating new dummy account and trying to connect then. Which sssucceeded..!!!
However. Back on my main account and deleting other user accounts im facing great difficulty setting up a VPN for the purpose of a VPN.
The issue now is: Once i get connected to my mac successfully from my iPhone using the VPN server all is good to go.
However. WHen i restart my computer (For testing purposes this was done) When the MacOS boots up again I have to relog into the Server app. Resign into the program, THen try and reconnect my VPN (WHich will be impossible to do if im out of the country). But it doesnt end there. I keep having to reisue a new Shared Password. FOr testing i Used 1234abcd. Got a good connection - Proceeded with restart and then had to change 12345abcd.
So i have tested this well over 50 times. Trying to find a solution.
In summary: Everytime i use the MAC Mini Server, I have to.
    1 Auto login.
2 Repopen the Server.app even though i have enabled it to autostart.
    3. Log into the server app (Not another networks Server)
    4 Change my shared password
5 Try and reconnect and pray it works.
Whats the quick fix for this. Its driving me insain and honestly making this a 1000$ peice of junk. Its hopeless regarding a server. I want it to be completely operational when i leave the country. My server is designed to Shut on and off between down times (Night Times) when i wake up i jsut want to be able to reconnect via a VPN and no issues, be on my way with life. Not having to wory about remote logging into the PC to then reset up the server.
    Any help please!

I sometimes get this same message window or a VPN Not Authorized window after rebooting my server. I have the Mac Mini late-2012 base model running OS X Server. When I do, I just try reconnecting and after no more than 3 attempts a connection is made either by my rMBP or my iPhone5.
I leave my server running 24/7 and I rarely get either of the two messages mentioned above.
You shouldn't need to open the Server.app unless you need to manage services. The Server services you configured should start everytime you restart. I have the Server.app icon on my Dock, but I do not launch it automatically. I manually click to launch it when I need to manage the Server, Accounts or Services.

  • New Mac Mini Server Network Issue

I recently purchased the new Mac Mini Server with 10.6 to use as a Content Filter/Web Server for a small private school. While trying to set it up, using the on board ethernet and a USB to Ethernet adapter, I have lost all ability to acquire an IP. IT does not matter if I use the on board ethernet, the USB adapter, or the Airport. All three return a self-assigned IP. I know this is related to the machine since I can still access the cable modem setup by typing in 192.168.100.1. And I brought it home to work on it a little more and the bonjour services are detecting the other macs on the network.
I tried trashing my network preference plist, but no change.
I am considering doing a fresh install since I think the initial setup was borked. But I thought I'd hit up the board and see if anyone else had a thought before I begin that process.
    thoughts?

I have setup this configuration several times with both a MacPro and the smaller mini setup. The gateway setup we are describing is about as simple as it gets (static IP, gateway running all services so 1 IP address, gateway set as 192.168.1.1 on the local net. Simple DHCP and DNS "server.local", and "server.xxx.com" external).
I would be overjoyed to find that I can configure this by setting up some simple overrides in the routing. I would point out in defense that _everything else_ works perfectly basically by default.
    1) dns on server: local and external, forward and reverse from itself and the local network - check
    2) services on server (all of them): from itself and the local and external networks - check
    3) network access (ie NAT & Firewall) for local machines - check (web, streaming, even bittorrent)
The only issue I see is that remote clients cannot access the gateway itself properly though VPN. UPD return packets seem to be mis-routed through the physical interface rather than the virtual one.
ALL other operations (Mail, iCal, iChat, Push, Web Services, Wiki, Web Mail and iCal, NAT) work perfectly for the server, local network, and external hosts. The above problem only happens for vpn clients, and then only for connections from them to the gateway itself, and only for UDP packets.
I would really love to know how to fix it, especially if this can be explained by a needed custom rule (But I'm guessing not given the otherwise full functioning system). Are you saying that to make VPN work you need to add custom routing info that is not described in the Server docs? If so what?
    Thanks,
    Hunter

  • Adding a redundancy to Mac Mini Server using Mt. Lion

Currently we are using a mac mini with MT lion server. Everything is working great, but i want to create redundancy backup with an additional Mac mini. What is the best way to proceed? We know about target disk mode. Do we need additional Raid software? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
"Take one Mac mini server configure as you like and enable its boot drive as a RAID member. Boot the other Mac mini server into Target Disk Mode. Connect them with a FW-800 cable (or ThunderBolt cable if the equipment supports it). Add the TDM mini to the mirror that the boot drive is in."
    Is the above solution acceptable?
    Thanks!

  • Mac Mini Server and RAID

    Hello,
I have now the new mac Mini Server with LION.
All is already intalled but I would like to have a raid solution.
    I looked here > https://discussions.apple.com/message/10819777#10819777
But it's Old and close, and there is no DVD in the Box.
I Know, I can download Lion & every softwares but I am not sure about the best way to do that.
First, I use a Big USB Key to use with Time Machine. Perhaps it will be better and fast to install than Apps with my internet connection. 2 - I have to use the disk application to format the 2 disks... Do I need to be in target mode with another mac ?
I read there is a problem after with time machine.. true ?
I am sure lot's of people want to use mac mini server with Raid disk.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Mac Mini server connections

I have an old 2002 23" Apple Cinema Display (plastic rounded frame). It used to be plugged into an old G5 with a 30pin oval male DVI type connector. Now I need to plug it with a new 2012 mac mini server (hdmi/thunderbolt). Anybody can help me to solve this apparently impossible task?

Use the HDMI to DVI adapter that came the the computer, followed by a DVI to ADC adapter

  • New Mac Mini Server, two Hard drives, Can I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

New Mac Mini Server, has two Hard drives, could I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!
    Thanks for your prompt response,

  • 2 x 1TB hard disk in mac mini server, possible?

    Hi to all of you,
I see the Mac Mini comes with 2x 500GB hard disk. Since you can now find 1TB hard disk on the Internet I was wondering if the mac mini server would support replacing the 2x500GB HDD by 2 x 1TB HDD?
    Anyone has tried it?
    Would it support it?
    Dag

I wonder the same thing. Power isn't the issue, though, all these drives should draw low enough power that the Mac Mini should be able to handle it, neither should cooling be an issue, since the Mac Mini is AFAIK not passively cooled.
However, most laptop 2.5" drives these days are 9.5mm high, the 1TB drives have the older, these days less common 12.5mm high form factor. So the real question is: does the Mac Mini provide the ability to mount 12.5mm high drives.
FW drives are NOT an option: less performance, and external cables are a recipe for disaster, particularly with any sort of server. Lose cables, corroded connectors, pulling on the wrong cable, separate power supplies that can independently fail, etc. etc.
    I'd rather have a 1TB server with a RAID-1 configuration than with a RAID-0 setup...
...and while the thing is open, toss 8GB RAM in...

  • Disk Erase Failed. Disk cannot be dismounted on Mac Mini Server

Ok, this is a bit crazy for me anyway. I have a Mac Mini Server running Snow. My Server HD failed but fortunately my Mac HD was being used as an image backup and I can boot from it fine and runs perfect. The bad disk was not showing in Disk Utility at all. So I bought a new one and replaced it.
Now Disk Utility sees it but if I try to format it or partition it, I get the message the it cannot be dismounted. I tried re-setting NVRam (Optio+CMD+P+R) but n luck.
I have my original Snow DVD but I have no external DVD. I have a MacBook Pro Mountain Lion.
How do I erase my new disk so I can copy everything back?
    Any help is appreciate it.

Although thats an excellent suggestion but in the end I attached an old usb backup drive and restarted and held down the Option key to select it to boot. Then it went into Disk Utility, and I reimaged the 2nd drive to the new drive.  After the reimage I restarted and held down the Option key to allow me to select the first drive.
The only issue I had was to rename my boot drive back to Server HD, which I did by using Finder and one more restart.
I guess the rule is you cannot unmount the boot original boot drive unless you boot from an external drive.
All is good now and thank you.

i want to downgrade my 2011 mac mini server to mac os x i have the disks but the mini willl not reboot the apple changing to a circle with a line please help-

bpruse,  I may be completely off-track for your issue, but I had a similar situation where I wanted to downgrade a Mac Pro from Server to plain OS X and it would not boot from the OS X install disk.
I was attempting to use a full-install OS X.6.x disc with an earlier SL version than that which originally came installed on the Mac Pro.  After two or three hours of fiddling, I figured it out and used the discs that came with the system.
However, I don't know how that would work in your case if this is the mini server-version.  I'm sure the disks would only have Server on them.  Worse-case scenario, find out which X.6.x the OEM disc is installing and get an OS X disc with a new installer.
    HTH.

  • Mac Mini 10.4 install disk work with a macbook?

    Hello All,
Will my Mac Mini 10.4 install disk work with a Macbook? I believe the model is either a MB061LL/A or MB062LL/A.
    Thank You in advance!

Yes, and possibly the system that disc can install is not Intel compatible. It would have to be a late 2006 model, which was the start of the Intel series of Minis.
