Dual Displays and Windows XP

Hello,
I have a MBP with the Radeon X1600 graphics card. Under OS X I can run dual displays without a problem, either extended or mirrored. Using Bootcamp to boot to Win XP, I can only get the 2nd monitor to run extended, I can't get it to run mirrored. What really drives me nuts (short trip) is that I have run it in mirrored mode before when I teach. I go to the Display dialog box and "see" both monitors, but the only way I can get anything now on the 2nd is to run extended? I could update Radeon driver on the Windows side, but I thought BootCamp took care of that and I don't want to mess up my laptop?

It is definitely best to reinstall anytime you make a major system change. You will have to do at least a windows repair although I am not sure if it will fully enable the dual core.
Good Luck

  • Are there any issues with MacPros+Dual Displays and FCP?

I have a MacPro (2.1) with an ATI X1900XT graphics card (2 DVI ports). It is currently hooked up to a single 24". My usage is mostly Browsing, Final Cut Suite and Video. I am planning on upgrading to Dual Displays (2*24" or 2*27") but read about some vague issues the ATI might have when using dual displays and FCP (Color more specifically). Are there any specific issues I should be aware of before getting a second display?
    Many thanks in advance

One graphics card? Two displays? ZERO ISSUES! Not sure what "vague issue the ATI" cards have, but I have that exact card, and run two 24" displays with no problems. I have run dual displays for years. I find working with one very...cramped.

  • Dual display and VRAM usage.

Hi, back in the days I wanted a 12" iBook but couldn't afford one, last autumn thought I decided to get a Macbook Pro, the update came and...
    .. it had 128MB vram.
I want to use dual screen and maybe even occasional gaming, I couldn't decide if this where sufficient for my needs or not so I waited for the june update.
The mid-07 MBP arrived and, it had 128MB vram AGAIN!
Why oh why Apple? Oh, don't answer that, it's because you're in bed with Intel and want to force feed us useless highest end CPUs. But all I care for is the VRAM, why do I have to pay a ****-of-a-lot for a 1/11th faster CPU?
Anyway, I tried to decide if I should "bit the sour Apple" and get the mid modell or just get the low one because that one is much more price worthy. A few days ago I ordered the low end one.
But then I've seen on barefeats that he says that a 30" ACD display would use 128MB vram of the 256MB vram modell, are vram always splitted between displays in OS X?
You see, if the extra 20" 1680x1050 display only use 1680x1050x(3 or 4) bytes that is ok, maybe even if it's double buffered (is it?), because then I will probably have like 100MB vram left for all my windows and for desktop usage that is probably ok. But if the vram is shared between displays and my 20" which I will use most only get 64MB vram that's quite low.
I know I can turn of the sleeping capabilities of the MBP and shut the lid and only use one screen but that's a quite lame solution.
I hate how Apple does this, and it seems to worry a lot of people. Some get the more expensive modell and hate that they had to do it, some doesn't, and some don't buy a machine at all .. I would probably have stayed in the last crowd.
256MB vram can't have cost them many tens of dollars, why not have that in all modells? Why is the middle one even needed? Just make 2.4GHz CPU and option in that case.
Anyway, does anyone know how much vram my screen will have available? Will 128MB work for me with all the regular desktop apps I will have running? Or should I really go with the 256MB one? The tricky part is that my MBP might be shipped today or similair.
I've called Apple support three times but noone of them knows how this works so they aren't for much help.
(Dell vostro 1500 sells here in Sweden for less than half the price of the mid MBP and comes way more balanced, you can even get a 1680x1050 screen. Sure it has 2.0GHz CPUs or whatever but I don't care about that. Where is the old "omg MHz myth"-Apple? Please understand CPU speed isn't everything. Instead of leading the MHz myth fight it ;D, start calling the CPUs T7300 and so on aswell ;D)

Hi Johan, actually the VRAM used by OS X is likely to be quite a bit more than just your screen resolution multiplied by 3 or 4, since each open window is composited offscreen for the shadow effects and for things like zooming (Ctrl-Mousewheel) and the "Genie effect".
I'm pretty sure the total VRAM isn't divided in half for each of the two displays though, as it will be allocated from the video driver on an as-needed basis. In practice, with both displays active and a few windows open, you should still have maybe 80-90% of your VRAM available for applications.
Games and other VRAM-heavy applications are a special case as these will typically use as much VRAM as you can give them, and swap out to system RAM via the PCI-X bus when they need more (and unlike swapping to disk, swapping into VRAM from system RAM is still pretty fast).

  • Dual Displays, and Dual Vid Card Help Please :-( 30'' Cinemas

Hello all, I just recieved my 30'' Cinema Displays from the Fedex man this morning and am having a bit of trouble getting everything up and running.
    My System is:
    Windows XP Home
    AMD Fx-57
2GB Corsair XMS DDR 400 Ramm
    Asus Asi-8 Premium Board
Dual Evga 7800 GTX 256mb PCIe x16 Cards
Currently at my disposal to make this work I have:
    2x 30'' Cinema Displays
    2x Evga Nvidia 7800 GTX 256mb PCIe x16 Cards
I say this because no matter what I do I cannot get both moniters to function properly.
At first I had had both cards in my desktop running SLI, and I attempted to plug in the monitors, neither would turn on when I booted up the pc, I tried every array I could possibly think of to even get some activity out of both, or even a SOLO monitor with the cards on SLI Mode.
Eventually I just grabbed one of the cards out, so that I was running on a single 7800 GTX card.
WHAM both monitors booted up normally heres the problem Im now faced with, in this mode I can set one monitors resolution (whichever monitor I have set as primary) to the normal maximum allowed by the 30'' Cinema.
The problem comes when faceing the other monitor which is stuck at 1280 x800, giving a very wierd look and panning feel.
Is there any way at all to make theese work?
I dont care If i have to go down to 1 card, or even go buy a new card
I just want both monitors to be running at high res.
    Thanks a bundle,
    Nick

You have to look at the specs for your video cards, but it looks like your video card only supports one dual-link DVI and the other connection is single-link DVI. You need a card with dual dual-link DVI outputs. I believe the high end ATI X1800 and X1900 video cards support this.
I'm not familiar with SLI to help there.

  • Thunderbolt Display and Windows 8.1

    I have a 2011 MBP running windows 8.1.
Since upgrading (it used to work under windows 8)my external thunderbolt display still works - but it's stuck in 640x480 mode.
Clearly this is a driver issue. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this problem.

That's awful - the good news is something I did -re-enabled the resolution slider - so the monitor works again. The driver thing is annoying. I'm considering trying parallels - and avoiding the issue. This is defintely the last apple monitor I buy though.
Thanks for answering - I'm going to keep my ear to the ground for new drivers as well.

  • LED display and Windows (bootcamp) or otherwise

I will be wanting to use this display both on my macbook and my desktop PC tower that I use for work. I know that I'll likely be able to use the display on the macbook in bootcamp, but will I be able to use it using the -DVI adapter on a PC? What sort of controls will I not have? When I adjust brightness in OS X does it write that setting to the display?

I am thnking this is going to be bad news but I have a PC laptop and have been given a 30 inch cinema display by a client of mine and thought it would be as simple as plugging it in???? I purchased a $10 adaptor that converted the DVI cable from the back of the display to the standard 15 pin VGA in the laptop. When I plugged it all in the laptop recognised that there was new hardware attached and downloaded the in built driver but nothing more. I have been messing around with the display settings to try and get an image to come up but with no luck. After reading all the irrate postings about the Imac notebooks and the lack of an available adaptor I am pretty much thinking that my setup is doomed.
would love some help on this one.???

  • Apple Cinema Displays and Windows

I know it will work with windows. But what kinda of
controls will I get? Since there is no controls on
the monitor it seems besides brightness. Or it all
depended on the graphic cards to be in control?
What is default color temp then?
      Windows XP Pro

WinACP <http://sourceforge.net/projects/winacd/> will give you a monitor control panel in XP.

  • I have a Black Rectangle covering my Time Machine window on dual displays.

I have "Displays have separate spaces" checked in preferences and when I enter time machine I get a black rectangle covering the Time Machine window. Time machine with dual displays and separate spaces is useless. Has anyone found a fix for this other than keeping "Displays have separate spaces" un checked?

Best to take your Mac to an Apple Store or Apple certified repair provider.

  • ACD as main display under Windows/BootCamp while in clamshell possible?

Is there any way to run a BootCamp Windows XP Pro installation on an MBP using the ACD as main display while in clamshell mode? Currently the system refuses to wake up after I close the lid. I use a BT mouse/KB, but even with a USB mouse connected it wouldn't wake up. It seems like it would be possible, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Correct, there was no Gather Windows button.
I do have multiple adapters, but one is an Apple adapter which is, apparently, "passive" whilst the other is active. The passive adapter never works at all under MacOS X, but I haven't tried it under Windows. The "active" adapter works under Windows, but only shows the apple bootup logo under MacOS X, and then turns the display off.
I don't think that the mini displayport is faulty, because the second display plugged into it works perfectly through BootCamp.
I'll try thoroughly testing out all adapters tonight, and then try a different brand of display. I've seen a lot of posts about ViewSonics being flakey under MacOS X, so it's possible it could be on the display driver side of things. Maybe ViewSonic does something screwy signal-wise in their displays, and Windows is willing to deal with it but MacOS X isn't.
Oddly enough, the ViewSonic display I have was shipped with a single-link DVI cable, and it's always worked without a problem, even when plugged into the dual-link DVI port on the Mac Pro. So I don't believe that the display *itself* requires a complete dual-link connection to the computer.
I have much appreciation for all the help and suggestions. Thanks again.

  • Kerne_task and window server uses high CPU percentage

I have a white macbook unibody mid-2010, and the aactivity monitor shows kernel_task and window server using CPU of around 20% at times. Why is it doing this and how can I stop it from using so much? Thanks for any help

I was experiencing something similar, but with windowserver running at over 80% mostly, spiking to 99%. MacBookPro hardly responded anymore.
I investigated windowserver and learned it was "coordinating and handling the display for applications that want to place something on the display" (sure this is technically incorrect; trying to explain in plain English). So there was a good chance it was not windowserver itself, but a calling application being the root cause.
Using Activity Monitor (in Applications - Utilities folder) I listed all active processes and preselected the ones I recognized, and anticipated they would be using graphics more than average. I then started killing them one after the other.
After I killed "BetterTouchTool 0.721", my windowserver went back to normal behavior, and the machine was fast again.
    Three last points:
    1) BetterTouchTool web-site does NOT say it fully supports Lion yet. I could have checked that so not blaming anyone here but myself.
    2) I'm using dual display and I see some references online to BetterTouchTool having some issues with that on Lion still.
    3) In your case, any other process can be causing the same symptoms; it does not have to be "BetterTouchTool". Do the trouble-shooting by killing process one after the other and it should quickly tell you which process is the culprit.
    Hope this helps,
    Ronald

  • KM4AM Board - Dual Displays

    Hi there
Is there a way that I can setup a KM4AM board to run with both the Onboard S3 DDR card and my AGP GeForce 6600 Card? I want to setup Dual Displays. Windows XP only detects the one or the other. When I remove the Geforce card the onboard S3 does work and vice versa? Any help will be appreciated?
    Thx

    Welcome to the forum.
Have you actually selected an image to be displayed as the "background" for the secondary display? Check System Preferences / Desktop & Screen Saver / then select your image(s) from the menu on the left of the window.
    Good luck.
