Dual Displays, not enough firewire ports?!

My MacPro isn't here yet...and I only have 1 cinema display right now but plan on adding a 2nd one in a few months.
In my anticipation for the Mac to be dropped of by FedEx, I noticed something while reviewing the specs...
My video card, the ATI Radeon X1900, has two DVI ports (so I can do two 23" or whatnot). If I use the my 23" Cinema Display, I can plug in the USB, the Firewire & the DVI connector.
However!! If I get a 2nd 23" Cinema Display, there's room for another DVI port and USB but NO firewire port. There's only ONE 400 FW port on the back of this machine?!?!
What do you all do if you're dual displaying it w/ Apple displays??

Well, the Firewire cable/port in the monitor is only there as a hub/extender, it doesn't affect the working of the monitor itself. So you can always attach the cable from the second monitor into the Firewire port of the first monitor. It depends how many other Firewire devices you need to add.

Try this: Use the [√]Mirror displays oprions, choose your resolution, then desect the [  ]Mirror displays.
It shouldn't supossed to be like this, but until they send an update, this workarround will work.

If all your ports are in use, try buying a USB hub, they are inexpensive and will give you several more ports.  Google for them.

    Hi,
I have installed the Lenovo USB port replicator using the 1.0.0.1 drivers.  I am running Windows XP on a Thinkpad X300.
I can successfully get into dual display mode but when I try to make the external monitor my primary display it will not work.  It just switches my primary monitor back the notebook LCD without displaying any errors.
If I disable the notebook display I can set the external as the primary but as long as the notebook is enable the external cannot be set as the primary.

  • Not enough FireWire Power?

    Hello,
on my new MPP17 C2D I noticed a dramatic change in the behaviourof the FireWire ports. It seems that less power is provided over both FireWire ports than on other/older MacBooks.
Example: I have an external WiebeTech FireWire hard drive that works without an external power supply on all older PowerBooks and even on my MacBook CD. It does not work on my brand new MBP17 C2D. It tries to power up the hard drive for 1 second or so, then stops, then tries again etc.
Is ist true that the FireWire specs on the MBP17 C2D have changed, or is someting wrong wit my MacBook?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Howdy!
I'm looking at the same possible problem. I have not purchased a bus powered external hard drive, yet. I have MBP 17 core duo, not the new core 2 duo.
    I've looked at http://www.wiebetech.com/products/ComboGB.php
    AC adapter optional
Most FireWire and USB ports provide enough juice to power ComboGB, so most users prefer to use ComboGB without an AC adapter for maximum portability. For users who prefer an AC adapter or who must use one with their computer, an AC adapter is available separately.
You will need an AC adapter (or use the included USB power cable) if the port you are plugging into does not provide enough power for ComboGB. This includes all 4 pin FireWire hosts (such as Sony iLink which provides no power at all) and some USB ports.
In most situations, the provided USB power cable can power the drive and pass data at the same time. Alternately, the USB power cable can be used for power only so you may use the USB cable for power and still use a FireWire cable for data.
For yet another configuration option, WiebeTech's Cable-32 is a smaller USB power cable (with no USB pass through) and is an optional power cable for ComboGB.
This setup, with USB power and Firewire data transfer, is interesting. But my research has not 100% comfirmed this option. However, it seems that the external hard drive needs to be a Hitachi drive.

    ALTERNATE STORAGE EXPANSION OPTIONS
If you want to further expand storage on your MacBook Pro, a cool way to do it is with a bus powered FireWire 800 enclosure with a SATA notebook drive inside. (If you go pure SATA enclosure or use the USB 2 port, you'll have to have an AC adapter.) Check with Wiebetech, TransIntl, and OWC for bus powered FW800 notebook enclosures that accept SATA notebook drives.
I wanted to bring this to your attention and I look forward to your comments.

  • Mac Pro 2009 with dual displays - not finding sync?

Hi - just bought a "new" previous generation Mac Pro 4,1 from MacMall... been having a lot of display issues and am looking for help. I run dual displays - one is connected via a MiniDisplay to HDMI cable (no adapter) and the other DVI to DVI. (NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card is set up that way) My displays are both Dell ST2210's, bought about a year ago. Prior to this setup they were both working great on my old dual 2GHz G5 (over VGA). Now the DVI one works consistently on its own but the one setup on the MiniDisplay port is intermittent and can't seem to find sync. They worked fine for a couple of weeks but now when I boot up, they both flash until I unplug the MiniDisplay port one and then the DVI one finds sync. I can't do the opposite - if I unplug the DVI one, the MiniDisplay one still doesn't work. Major drag... this is a production computer and it's a major disruption and changes my work flow quite a bit. Any advice would be appreciated. Seems like a sync / power issue related to the MiniDisplay port on the GT120 but I could be missing something....

Native DisplayPort (and its Mini variant) is a completely different protocol from HDMI/DVI. To operate properly, your DisplayPort cable needs to assert a signal that tells the DisplayPort to go into "Dual Mode" and produce a DVI/HDMI signal instead.
One common problem of Mini DisplayPort is that the connector is so small, and has so many contacts, that users are hesitant to push it all the way into the socket. If it is not completely and utterly bottomed in the socket, it cannot assert the signal to change to dual mode, and nothing will work correctly.
If that is not your problem, you may have a cable issue, and should pursue a cable from a different manufacturer.

  • Not enough Ethernet ports

Airport Extreme only provides three Ethernet LAN ports, which is not enough. Is it possible to daisychain an Airport Extreme to another Airport Extreme? If so, how?
    Thanks.

I assume that an Ethernet "hub" is the same thing as an Ethernet "switch"?
No, that is not the case. A hub splits up or divides the available bandwidth among connected devices. So, if you have 4 devices connected, each device would receive 1/4 of the available bandwidth.
A switch delivers full bandwidth to each connected device.....much better performance. For that reason, a switch was traditionally quite a bit more expensive that a hub. Luckily, that is not the case any longer. For a $10-15 dollar premium, you can get a Gigabit Ethernet switch, instead of a hub.
am I also correct that in order to get Gigabit Ethernet from the Extreme and/or the hub (or switch), I will first have to be sure that my modem isoutputting via Gigabit Ethernet?
I doubt that you can find a Gigiabit Ethernet modem. Even if you could, your signal is only going to be as "fast" as the plan that your provider will allow.  Typically, that might be 20 Mbps.......while Gigabit is 1,000 Mbps.
The advantage to having Gigabit speeds on your "local" or "private" network is that file transfers or copies between devices will occur much more quickly.
Your Internet connection will never be any faster than your plan allows.

  • Mavericks and Dual Display not working as documented

Hi all. Ok..something a little wierder here for my dual display scenario. I have two Samsung Syncmaster 2443 monitors. 15" MBP Retina purchased this year. Running in Clamshell Mode.
I can get dual monitors happening (extended) but I cannot get the menu bar to come over as well. As mentioned in other posts, I need to tick the box in Mission Control "Displays have seperate spaces". The only problem is, that particular menu item is NOT there. All I have is the other 4 items. So how is it that this menu item does not exist on my installation?
In this current setup, each time I reboot the display's also get reveresed, which is really annoying. I have to reboot twice to get back to my original layout.
    Any idea's?
    Tks

you're faking out your machine to THINK it has 2 real displays and you expect Keynote to work? Keynote is THE most intense app I've ever seen for screen drawing. It basically takes over your entire machine to do its work. It doesn't surprise me that that trick doesn't work with it.
My guess is you're going to have to wait till you have the actual projector and adapter to test your dual screen setup.

  • How to fix a lack of enough  firewire ports  issue?

I am using garageband with an Alesis iO14 audio interface. Just bought a Liquid Mix 16 with a firewire connector. Am having trouble with the Liquid Mix after installation. The mfr. says I should not daisy chain the two. They recommend a firewire expansion card. Is this even possible with the mini? any advice on how I can fix this? I really want to use this Liquid Mix. Thanks.

You are out of luck. This is so annoying. I just don't understand why Apple can not give most of their machines not only two firewire ports, but two independent busses as well. This is not a luxury in my opinion. The only machine in their entire product lineup what allows for expansion of firewire busses/ports is the giant Mac Pro. Mac computers are used in so darn many professional industries that depend on not only fast harddrive interfaces, but interfaces of various kinds that need a dedicated high speed buss. Pro machines should feature pro inputs and outputs. They've even taken the ExpressCard interface away from all but one laptop. What's next? Maybe they should just remove the USB ports too and assume that we all love wireless keyboard/mice/card readers/printers...it's insanity.
You are supposed to be able to daisy chain an enormous amount of firewire devices, but in reality, that just does not work all the time. I too had all kinds of problems chaining a MOTU 828mkII and one single harddrive on one FW buss. No matter of changing order of hooking them up, to which one to turn on first had any effect. They both wanted more than the single buss could give.
I'd return the LiquidMix if you can...the only mac in the current line that I can honestly call Pro is the Mac Pro tower. The others just don't have pro or even semi-pro in/out anymore.
It's almost like Apple really likes to not give us pro's what we really need. Close, but not quite. Imagine a macbook pro with two firewire busses? WOW! The audio and video crowd would go crazy for them. Imagine they also put back expresscard slots on all laptops in the Pro line? You could have 3 separate input busses for harddrives, cameras, audio interfaces, etc. Now that would be pro.

  • Not enough physical ports - error message??

    Hi
I just started to get an error message dialog box when I open Soundtrack Pro on my quad core G5. The message says "the current output device does not have enough physical ports for this document. Some outputs may not play back as a result".
I don't understand this - can anyone help. If I click OK then for sure, not audio comes out of STP.
Running version 1.1 on OSX 10.4.10
This hasn't happened before. It happens either when I open a new STP file with nothing in it, or when sending from FCP.
    Thanks
    Neil

First of all, thanks for the replies.
I gave it another try today; I deleted the old files and ripped them to my computer again, this time using Windows Media Player instead of iTunes. I tried transferring them to my iPod again and this time it worked. As always iTunes had to convert them to files that it could read, but then it took just a few seconds and all of them made it to my iPod.
I don't know what the problem was the first time around. I checked the file sizes, and the largest was 4.2 MB. There were about 11 songs. It was just a typical audio CD and its total length was 44 minutes.
I guess from now on I'll just import CDs with Windows Media Player and then let iTunes convert them so that I can have even more files on my computer. Oh well. If that's what it takes... Sometime when I have a lot of time to fool around I'll try to see if something is going wrong when I'm importing them with iTunes.
    Thanks again for the responses!

  • Is it possible to connect MBPR with Cinema HD Display 30" 's Firewire Port for iSight

I want to buy a external iSight for my old Cinema HD Display 30" ,as i don't have enough space to open my notebook to use the built-in iSight camera.
I know they are very old item, but i think they have very beautiful design and great quality, i want to use them
I have already using the 30" Display by Dual Link-DVI converter, i don't have any firewire device, i don't know is it still work for using Thunderbolt (MacBook) -> Firewire800 (Adapter)-> Firewire400(converter) -> Cinema HD Display FW port -> external iSight
or is there any other solution for me?
or should i give up this setting
As i don't want to use other brand USB camera, other brand no need to consider.
    Thanks for attention

  • Not enough USB ports!

I have 3 USB ports on my G5 and 4 things that need to be powered directly off them (the keyboard; a DigiDesign M-Box; a Mackie Baby HUI; and a 4-port hub). How can I get this to work all at once? I’d rather not have to un-plug the 4-port hub every time I want to use the Mackie mixing board.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

    <RANT>
I have been a strong advocate for more rear panel ports (fat lot of good it's done!) for years. USB expansion on Macs is terrible. I have a box full of PCI USB cards from Sonnet, Adaptec, Belkin, IO Gear, NEC, you name it. Red ones, yellow ones purple ones, big ones, small ones, 2 port cards, four port cards, five port cards....not one "works without issues". Some will allow the computer to sleep as long as nothing is connected to them. With others, the computer will not even boot. I could buy another Mac with what I've spent on these 'effing things. And don't give me that bull about the display and keyboard ports either. The display ports can be just as problematic as the expansion cards and the keyboard ports while convenient for things like a mouse or PowerMate, are low power and cannot support things like media card readers. The front port is very handy for temporary connections but who wants a cable sticking out of the front of their computer all the time?
All of this could be avoided by simply providing 4-6 rear panel ports like the other computers have. For what Apple charges for their machines, it would not, I am sure" break the bank".

  • Considering AppleTV, not enough HDMI ports

I really want to get an AppleTV, because I've got a boatload of iTunes TV and movie content on my Mac, that I want to watch on my TV. Also, some things like the NHL package and other stuff is kind of cool.
But, I've got an HDMI port problem, and I'm trying to figure out what to do.
My sound system has 2 HDMI IN ports, 2 optical sound ports and 1 HDMI OUT ports. Both HDMI IN's are being used, and the HDMI out goes to my TV
I have Airplay set up with my Airport Express that uses a AUX line from the AE to my sound system. I either play music from my iPhone/iPad or directly from my iMac.
My TV has 3 extra HDMI IN ports. But it has lousy sound (hence the sound system).
I was thinking that the best solution would be to run an HDMI from AppleTV to my TV for video, and use an optical cable to run sound to my sound system. I just want to make sure that this will work, that AppleTV is smart enough to know that the HDMI is just for video and the optical is going to carry the audio stream.
Alternatively, I was thinking that video would still go through the HDMI to my TV, but audio would go through Airplay through my Airport Express? I'm worried that there would be just enough of a delay between the video and sound through WiFi to put my video and audio out of sync.

    OM
I have Apple TV with HDMI to my TV which I get video and sound via the TV.  I also have opical audio to the soundbar from Apple TV.  I can use just HDMI for video and sound through tv, HDMI for video (turn tv sound to 0) and soundbar for audio via optical audio or even just audio from the soundbar with TV off (need tv on to navigate frst!!).  Apple TV 2 with Samsung TV and soundbar all works great.
So short anser, yes your idea should work, just the apple TV won't know the HDMI is just video, you have to turn the TV sound off yourself.!
