Dual Displays on the stock card...

I'm going to be using my Mac Pro for pro audio, and maybe some light picture editing. I'm looking to buy 2 20 inch LCDs that will run at a native resolution of 1600x1050. Will the stock Mac Pro card handle that or do I need to upgrade? I don't care about speedy Picture editing, I just think it will just be nicer then using my Macbook... Anyone know for sure if that will be OK for that card?
Thanks in Advance.

  • Can DV6-1352 Handle Long-Term Dual Monitors on the Graphics card

    Hey guys,
Very simple question here. I wanted to set up a dual monitor thing on my Dv6-1352. I believe it has this integrated graphics chip : Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD. I wanted to use the dual monitor capabilities on it, but I was wondering if over time, extended use of the graphics card due to dual monitors would make it over heat/kill it. I don't plan on playing games, just using it cuz A) Its pretty cool B)It'd help increase efficiency in my engineering school work which requires I have a lot of things open at the same time.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
The retail version of the 9600 comes with two DVI ports.
I think some companies were selling OEM versions with an ADC and DVI port that had been pulled from G5s and modified to work in G4s.
In a G5 both ports work fine but in a G4 I don't think the ADC port is powered. The Quicksilver does actually have the required internal power slot, but I think it's in a different position on the logic board. Consequently the power stub on the card which lines up with the slot in a G5 doesn't line up with the slot in a G4.
I think you can still use two monitors by using an ADC to DVI adapter cable. This would convert the unpowered ADC port into a second DVI port.
To connect two DVI monitors, you'd just need one ADC to DVI adapter cable.
To connect two ADC monitors, you'd need the above adapter plus two DVI to ADC adapters which are fairly expensive ($99 each).
To connect one DVI monitor and one ADC monitor, you'd need one ADC to DVI adapter cable and one DVI to ADC adapter.
The retail 9600 doesn't have an ADC port either, so either way you'd end up buying some form of adapter in order to use an ADC monitor.
    I hope this helps.

  • Dual ADC displays and a vid card w/ no ADC ?

    Hi.
I've got a PowerMac G4 with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro vid. card. I bought it when I purchased my 17" Apple display not knowing that the Apple display had its own connector that required me to but a $99 adaptor that also requires a power cord!
Anyway, my old CRT (that acted as my 2nd display on the G4) finally died. I purchased a nice 15" Apple display, but apparently forgot to consider the ADC connection.
I need a cheap, fast solution.
I've got a G4 with the 9800 Radeon which has a DVI and VGA connection.
By the way, does having 128MB DDR of video ram help with rendering time??
Ok, back to the original question.
I also have the original video card that came with the PowerMac G4 1.2mhz Quicksilver. I believe it's an 9000 Radeon. It's got an ADC and VGA connection.
How can I setup a dual display on the G4 with the two Apple displays? Both are ADC and neither card has (2) ADC connections.
I've got two ADC to DVI convertors and I have the VGA to DVI convertor that came with my 17" apple display, but the DVI end doesnt match the DVI end on the 2nd ADC to DVI convertor.
Any suggestions? Is there a dual ADC video card?

    Hi
As far as I'm aware, the Radeon 9000 that came as the stock graphics card in certain PowerMacs had an ADC connector and a DVI connector. It also came with a DVI to VGA adapter. If this is the case you should be able to attach one monitor directly to the ADC connector and the other to the DVI connector using the $99 DVI to ADC adapter. You'd be losing the benefit of the Radeon 9800 though.
Unfortunately there aren't any graphics cards with dual ADC connectors, as the card (and AGP slot) would have to provide enough juice to power two monitors. The options seem to be:
    1. One AGP card with an ADC connector and DVI connector, which would require one DVI to ADC adapter, such as the Radeon 9000.
    2. One AGP card with two DVI connectors, which would require two DVI to ADC adapters, such as the Radeon 9600 retail version. Mines worked perfectly, although there do seem to be problems with it in certain Quicksilvers and Digital Audio G4s.
    3. One AGP card with a DVI connector, which would require a DVI to ADC adapter, such as your existing Radeon 9800 and one PCI card with a DVI connector, which would also require a DVI to ADC adapter, such as the Radeon 9200. An AGP card with an ADC connector would also work but seems pointless given you've already got the 9800 and adapter.
Unfortunately I'm not sure there is a really cheap solution. As already mentioned, there are VGA to DVI converter boxes on the market, but they're incredibly expensive and you'd be converting from digital to analogue and back to digital, with some loss of quality.

  • Gaming on the stock 7300GT

So what’s it like gaming on the stock 7300GT under BootCamp? Do HL2 and BF2 look ok?
I can’t afford a 1900XT right now but I’m still seriously considering buying a Mac Pro. I haven’t played HL2 since I was a Windows user a year and a half ago. I switched to Mac to use Final Cut Pro (and because I was getting tired of maintaining my PC).
I’d like to play Counter Strike Source and Battlefield -- I don’t demand perfect performance. I have always gamed on mid-level PC’s, so I can accept a little video card lag here and there, as long as it’s not so slow that it makes me play the game badly. You know, never get headshots, bump into walls, friendly fire…
Would you say that the stock card is good for gaming, or is the ATI card the only one any gamer should consider?
    1.8 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The 7300GT is a pretty capable card even compared to the 7300 versions on the PC. For older games, it runs pretty well (counter-strike, hl2) at medium resolutions (1280x1024 being the max). But, if you go higher, or try to start getting performance out of the card for newer games it just dies. The 1900 is so much faster it isn't even funny. If you plan to play any newer games (GTR2, Oblivion, FEAR, Battlefield (doesn't it have pretty steep requirements?) get the 1900.
I decided to go old school and check out Doom 3 again. On an older PC with a 6800GT and dual core Athlon I was getting 30 or so fps at 1280 res with medium settings. This is about the max I got with the 7300 in the new mac (using boot camp). Dropped in a 1900 and cranked up the settings to Ultra (which at the time of release Carmack said it would take many years for a card to handle the requirements of Ultra and a min of 512MB of video was essential --- I had never seen it run in Ultra mode), anyway dropped in the 1900, ultra setting with everything maxed, widescreen 16:10 1900x1200 resolution and getting 60FPS solid. This game caps the fps without hacking it, so I'm sure it's higher, but the point is it's non-stopped maxed. Counterstrike on the 1900XT, I was getting 100+ FPS at 2560x1600 res with everything maxed!
Hopefully this chart will link. If it doesn't go to Tom's Hardware, click on graphics and displays | vga charts | April 10 Interactive VGA charts. Select ATI x1900 XT R580 from dropdown 1, Nvidia 7300 GT TC G73 from dropdown 2, pick a game and resolution and see the performance comparison between all the cards. Your 2 selected cards show up in blue. For Oblivion at 1280 the ATI does 93FPS, the Nvidia does 23FPS. For Prey at 1600 it's 50FPS for the ATI, 11FPS for the stock Nvidia. Booyah!
    http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=548&model2=532&char t=210
The real question is, "Should I get the 1900 and if I spend the extra money will I see a difference?"
If you plan on playing games. Oh, heck yeah. Splurge. You won't regret it.

  • G4 quicksilver dual 1ghz: how many video cards can i install?

i've kept this great old machine on the shelf, now i've found a use for it!  i've been programming video installations for theatre using isadora (on more modern machines) and would love to utilize my old G4.  currently installed is the stock card with a VGA and an ADC output, and i've run 2 monitors off it in the past.  i'd like to run my ADC powered 17" studio display (control screen) plus at least 2,3 or more video projectors, so i'd like to install an additional video card(s).  ideally VGA or DVI, but s-video or even component could work- it doesn't need to be high definition. can this machine handle it, and if so, recommendations for a good card, or multiple cards?  i have several open slots, how many is feasable to stack in there?
    thanks y'all!

Remember that video cards use the most power of any PCI cards. There is usually a finite limit to how much power the computer's PCI bus can provide.
I don't know the limimts on the QS, but the old Beige G3s has a limit of 45W total across three slots--I doubt it's a lot more on yours.  The assumption back then was that most PCI vidcards then drew 25W. Unlike newer cards that have power "taps" top allow direct connection to the power supply, older PCI vidcards seldom had this convenience. I have a radeon 9200 and it does not.
The 9200 had a lot of VRAM but did not support Apple's Quartz Extreme video technology. Although great for 3D stuff, its 2D performance in OSX was dismal, with scrolling and dragging being choppy. You do not want that card as you primary video source on a computer with AGP graphics. There was a hack to get around the QE issue but it seldom worked without issue if you had more that one PCI card of any kind.

  • 30" Cinema Display and ATI AGP cards

I recently purchased a 30" Cinema display. My G5 Dual 2.0 GHz does not have the PCI-Express slot, only a AGP slot. After doing all my research, I arrived at 2 ATI cards (one for my PC and one for my G5). For the G5, I purchased the ATI X800XT Mac Edition. It clearly states it will support the 30" at 2560X1600 and it does say it is Dual link. The G5 will not display anything on any monitor (I also have a 20" cinema display). The other card I purchased for the PC is the ATI 9600 PRO MAC and PC edition. This card works flawlessly...on the PC (2560X1600), but limits display resolution to 1280X800 on the G5. My suspicion is that my G5 (I purchased in June 2004) does not present enough power at the AGP port, but I am only guessing.
    Any thoughts?

From what I understand, there are four Mac/AGP cards that are compatible with the 30" Cinema Display:
    1. ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Edition
    2. ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
    3. Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT DDL
    4. Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL
(By the way, try finding that information anywhere on the Apple site. I've spent hours researching this.)
I can't find any of the above for sale anywhere, except for #4 for over $500. I'm considering returning the monitor. Will a Geforce 6800 GT from another company such as PNY or Asus work? How about the ATI Radeon X1300?
    Thanks for your help, -jl

  • T410/T510 and Dual Displays

I'm looking at the T410 or T510 for my wife for her business.  I wanted to try and set her up with dual displays (either the laptop LCD itself plus one display or two physical displays.  Is there anything I need to be aware of in regards to a dock solution or a discrete graphics card if I'm thinking of dual displays?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1) the integrated only option supports a max of 2 display by itself, so either 2 external LCD and no internal LCD. Or 1 external and 1 internal.
    2) the optimus nvidia gpu supports up to 4 LCD.

  • Use laptop display for dual display

I'm working on a G5 w/ artisan monitor and want some extra screen real estate. I have a G4 power book and wondered if I can somehow use the screen on the laptop as a dual display for the G5? Both run OSX tiger.

    Hi Virginia,
    Welcome to the discussions.
As far as I am aware, the graphics cards on the powerbooks enable you to run a second display from the laptop, but only as a "mirrored" (i.e. identical picture) of the main display on the laptop. For extra screen real estate, you need fully independant operation, and that can't happen.
Also, I don't think you can use the screen off the laptop as a "passive" display, as there is no practical way of supplying the correct video input to your laptop display from the second graphics port of the G5.
For these two reasons, I believe that what you are considering will not be possible.
    Cheers!

  • Dual Display - help with Cinema Display for MacBook Pro where MB won't detect displays.

I just got a Cinema Display (a1081 20") ("CD") off eBay to use as a dual screen with my Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 ("MB"). However, I can't get MB to recognize CD! I've tried power cycling both the MB and the CD with and without USB cord connected. MB won't recognize CD display in any situation. However, it is recognized in some capacity although I can't use dual display because the CD power button triggers MB to ask me if I want to restart, shutdown, or cancel.
    Any help is appreciated!!

Have you tried smc and pram resets?
Try Detect Displays in the Displays preference pane.
Does the Displays preference pane Arrangement show two screens?  If so do click gather windows and check the resolution setting of the new screen.

  • Dual Display using ADC

Hi. I have PowerMac G5, 1.8GHZ with CRT display and NVDA, Display-A. The PCI card has two output, DVI-I and ADC. DVI-I is connected to SONY display and functioning fine. I want to add another display using ADC. I bought ADC-DVI connector from the apple store (Dr Bott ADC DVI exctractor II). I also bought apple's DVI to video adaptor. Using these, I'm trying to make video display on the NTSC monitor.
    ADC-DVI-RCA
It doesn't display. Could anyone tell me why it doesn't work?
    martha

    Greetings,
The ADC-DVI cable only works with LCD monitor, not with CRT. Swap your connection of monitors the other way round and this should work.

  • Hyperlinks in Dual Display mode, Keynote '09.

This problem has been well reported in this forum, but I cannot find an answer.
I have created a series of Keynote '09 presentations and I have installed hyperlinks on the last slide of each one to open, on clicking, the subsequent presentation.
Trouble is in Dual Display (not mirrored) mode using a projector as Secondary Display and a MacBook as Primary Display (with next slide, presenter notes, timers, and other items that only I, as presenter, can see. Then I cannot activate the hyperlinks; in fact the icon of small blue circle and white arrow is not showing in this mode and the pointer does not change to finger.
However if I press X or use "Swap" from drop-down menu I can see the view of slide that the audience normally sees and the hyperlink is shown and active. I click on it and once the subsequent Keynote opens, I can press X again and return to Presenter View on MB, but this is messy and the audience gets to see the "workings". Not a good look.
Interestingly, the same disappearance of hyperlinks also occurs if I use Rehearse Slideshow, but not if I use Play Slideshow when MB is not hooked to external display. This seems to suggest thst these hyperlinks are not there in "Presenter" view.

I found I had the same problem at my let presentation: Hyperlinks do not work in dual display using the MacBook at primary display. I gave up and put the presentation on my iPad and everything worked fine. Think I will just mirror the display of my MacBook so I can use the hyperlinks.

    Hello
Please take a look on question 9 of the following FAQ note, which explains the standard system behavior:
549752 - FAQ: MRP elements in transaction MD04/MD05
    9.  Question: Why does the system not display stock in transit for stock
transport orders with order confirmation (notified orders)?
        Answer:
Purchase order confirmations do not have to match the original
purchase order delivery schedule lines. Moreover, the purchase order
confirmation (view MDLA in materials planning) does not contain the
same information as the purchase order to determine the stock in
transit. The display of the stock in transit is therefore not
implemented for the purchase order confirmation in the materials
        planning evaluation transactions.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

I have configured the driver to use my main display (Dell CRT on GTX 460) and the cursor shows up where it's supposed to, but when I draw, the cursor "splits" into two, the actual cursor, and the drawing cursor. MisterAnderson wrote:Honestly no clue how to help you, but I am interested in your setup. Are you using the proprietary drivers for your nvidia card and the opensource radeon for your ati? How did you get this setup working? I've been trying for ages!
If I remember correctly, I just used --nodeps and maybe --force when installing the nvidia driver, that way it didn't force me to uninstall the radeon driver when I install the nvidia driver. Then, look at my xorg.conf. there's no acceleration of any sort on the ati card, but I can use it for terminals and browser windows, text editors and the like. Can't watch flash videos on it though, and I don't think mplayer works on it either, I'm not at my arch box atm, so I can't verify that.
Also, as mentioned in my opening post, no composting either. The same setup works pretty good in Ubuntu with a similar config, but no compositing there either, Unity clones 1680x1050 of my main 2048x1536 display, can't split the desktops, and I just end up using Xfce4 because it handles Xinerma pretty well.. I have to turn off the compositing extension in the config on arch to get X to even start up.
    :edit:
back in arch, should note that whenever I install a new package, I receive this warning. Everything still works tghough as I describes. And back on topic, anyone have any clue as to why my tablet behaves this way?
