Dual drive system restore?

My current setup is a 2008 MacBook Pro with a 320GB HDD and a 128GB SSD which I replaced the optical drive with. And currently I have my OS and my home directory on the SSD. I have all my photos, documents etc on the HDD. And I'm backing up this entire system, to a single 1TB external drive that's connected by USB to my Time Capsule.
I'm pretty sure I will get a new MBP, Retina most likely, when I go to college, which is in less than a year (yay for being an senior and totally overwhelmed by IB work!), and by then I would have to move my entire system over, which means restoring it onto the new MBP from my Time Machine backup.
However, the problem is I'm not sure how Time Machine will restore my system then, since the MBP will only have one volume, will Time Machine demand a system with two physical drives or at least a single drive with dual partition. Or will it automatically merge the two volumes together and restore that all onto the new MBP. And if it does merge the two volumes together, will anything happen to mess up my filing system?
Thanks for the advice in advance!

Setup Assistant will restore only the old startup volume to the new one. You'll have to restore your user files in the time-travel view. This will result in a very large initial backup, which may cause many of your older snapshots to be deleted, or you may run out of space on the backup volume.

  • H8-1040 Video Driver Crashing, System Restore then no longer boots properly

I previously had some issues with my graphics card driver crashing. After moving, I took the card out and cleaned out all the dust. The issue somehow got worse. (As you would imagine, the issue never presented itself in Safe Mode). Regardless, I decided to do a system restore. After completing the system recovery, the computer never went to the OS setup screen. In fact, it simply shows a blank screen now when it boots. There are no error beeps and the system diagnostic checks out. I'm not entirely sure what to do. I've tried booting in safe mode, but the computer says it can not complete the installation in safe mode.
    So has my card died?
(The issue seems to be similar to what is experienced here: http://forums.evga.com/GTX-550-ti-issue-black-screen-after-loading-windows-m1303862.aspx)
If this card had to be replaced, anyone have any suggestions?

Hey I'm a novice on computers but i've just done a full system restore on my laptop and put it back to factory spec, obviously i backed up all the data on an external hard-drive but when i have re-installed itunes and gone to import all my old music files from my previous itunes library as mpeg4 files it keeps telling me i don't have permission??!! *** someone please explain or tell me how to get music on to my new itunes without having to re-import every cd i own which is alot!!!

Other than iMovie, GB always incorporates the audio files into the GB package. So just save or move the GB project to the external drive, and you're done - anything you import, edit or record will be saved to the external drive.

I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly.  I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired (errors were associated with boot drive)  I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it. Allen's already recommended an Apple repair station visit. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • Win 7 x64 - Need to repair a single driver, but can't use System Restore

Basic Info - an HP/Compaq Elite 8200 Convewrtible Minitower with 2 extra SATA drives & a Creative SoundBlaster card installed.
Background:  My system had begun going into Blue Screen (BS hereafter) every couple of days with a message that the BIOS was not "fully ACPI compliant."  I contaced HP and was able to obtain & install the needed BIOS upgrade.  Following this, I decided to do some housekeeping & checked for out-of-date drivers.  I installed these one at a time, as I had a previous bad experience with updating too many drivers, particularly Intel chipset drivers, at a single time.  When I finished the last update, which involved two drivers labeled IntStrA and IntStrB, if I recall correctly (I'm posting this from my PC at work, so I may have the names off by a character or so) my system began going BS after ~10 minutes or so.  Nearly every BS referenced the MicroSoft system driver wdf01000.sys.
It is my belief that either wdf01000.sys became corrupted, or the last 2 updates were having a negative impact on the M S driver.  Unfortunately, if I try to use System Restore to roll back the suspect updates, the system will BS ~1-2 minutes after the m essage "Restore is initializing" appears.
The only solution I can get from the HP Tech is to back up my data and then use the "Erase, Reformat & Reinstall" function from the Recovery Disks.  Unfortunately, with a system that goes B S every 10 minutes, it is impossible to perform a reliable back-up for all 3 disks, while the Recovery Disk is only willing to back up my drive F:\, not my primary OS Drive, C:\ or my other drive, G:\ (the HP Recovery partition is drive D:\).
    My questions are:
    1.  If the problem is a corrupted WDF01000.sys is it possible to obtain a reliable copy of & replace it?  (The HP tech warned about the danger of obtaining a copy of a MicroSoft sysem file from the internet - a danger of which I was fully aware - but, isn't there at least one system in HP's possession running Windows 7 x64 professional?  I should think a file supplied from HP would be sufficiently safe.  However, when I raise the possibility with the tech, there is no response.)
    2.  If the problem stems from the last 2 Intel driver updates, is there a way to get a functional OS loaded from DVD that would peremit System Restore to run?  My last system had Win 7 installed from MS media and, as I recall, once loaded, the use of System Restore was one of the repair options.  The HP Recolvery disks only offer 2 choices - back-up (which would only cover drive F:\, with <10% of my 4+ years worth of data) or "Erase, Reformat & Reinstall."  Following this course would put at risk ~90% of my data, not to mention the grief of reinstalling a great deal of software.
    3.  The HP tech tells me that, since Recovery is only willing to back up drive F:\, this is where the Recovered OS would be installed.  This would give me the independently loaded OS I sought in question 2.   However, I greatly fear that drive where recovery operated would be my primary OS drive, C:\.  If this were the case, the result would be disastrous!  I do have back-up via Carbonite, but I don't think this has been operating properly since the ACPI-related BSs began.
So -- any suggestions?  Anything that gets me out of this problem without loss of data will be most sincerely appreciated!
    Tom Filipi

    Hello TomF,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that after running some updates your system is getting BSOD errors associated with the Windows file wdf01000.sys. Now I cannot claim to be able to get you a copy of that file. I am not sure just replacing it would resolve your issue anyways. I can do this for you I can tell you that first the HP Compaq 8200 Elite Convertible Minitower PC is a commercial product. You can do this at you may get more assistance by posting this on the commercial forums at  Business PCs - Compaq, Elite, Pro.
Additionally, I would suggest you start your computer in Safe Mode and using an elevated command prompt run the command "SFC /SCANNOW". You can do this by right-clicking on the Command Prompt link and choosing Run as adminstator. Also, you can use chkdsk to run another repair on your files to see if they can be repaired.
The SFC /SCANNOW command will run the System File Checker to see if it can repair any corrupted system files where the chkdsk will do the same, but for ALL the files on your computer.
I am also providing you with resources on both below:
Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files
Run Check Disk from a Command Line to Check for and fix Disk Errors
I hope this helps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • 1.Backup to External drive 2. CoverArt lost after Windows system restore

I recently spent many hours searching for and applying cover art for my music which was mostly ripped before cover art was readily available.
Because of this investment, I want to be sure my library is fully backed up. I want to use space on an external drive, rather than DVD's.
I noticed as I added art, iTunes started acting sluggish. I thought it might be because of the new version or a recent Windows Vista update. So I decided to run system restore. I was appalled to discover that restore wiped out the art I had added. So I reversed the restore and the cover art returned. It became clear to me that the art must be stored in some other way than in the actual music file. I've searched the forum and found others who had problems with system restore, but no explanation of exactly what I should do if I want to proceed with a system restore. I use system restore several times a year and I have never lost anything in iTunes before I started adding cover art. I also never had a problem with sluggishness til I added a bunch of cover art.
My library is large at 3000 items.
Is there a way to compact or optimize the database to improve responsiveness?
Is there a way to backup to an external drive? Is it just a file copy and export library file?
If I export the library as an xml file before I do a system restore, can I then replace it after the restore and protect my cover art.

To be completely sure what you're doing please take a look at your iTunes Folder and see what Vista stores inside it. To find it, go to Start>Computer>Hard Disk C>Users>Your Name>Music>iTunes>.......
Please note there is an artwork folder PLUS a music folder!
My guess is that your system restore point pre-dated the time you added artwork to your iTunes files. (Celebrate that system restore still works for you--I have not been able to successfully restore for over a year now--Norton Internet Security causes system restore failures for many Windows users! I've tried to do this using Windows XP and Vista--and I can never successfully restore anymore.)
To fully backup your library, just copy the entire iTunes folder to another source--second hard drive, USB drive, or burn it to a CD or DVD, etc.
If you're experiencing "sluggishness" it may be due to the amount of RAM on your system. iTunes needs a great deal of RAM to run smoothly. You can choose to: increase the RAM on your system, OR, turn off cover flow/album view and see if things run more smoothly.

  • After system restore, old files taking up too much space on TM drive...

Time Machine just saved my *** this AM, some sort of a system error while I was repairing permissions, I used the System Restore on TM, and when it all came back, my TM drive is too full to continue using.
Is is safe to re-format the drive and start fresh?

This is because TM does a new full backup after a full restore.
Seems a bit weird, but you did replace everything on your disk, even though it was actually all the same stuff.
And yes, erase the TM drive/partition with Disk Utility (do NOT delete via the Finder), and start fresh.

  • After system restore TM backup too large to fit on same drive

I just had to get a new hard drive at the Apple store and thus completed a system restore using time machine. My problem now is I am getting errors when TM goes to do a backup (it is saying there is not enough room on the drive). Is there a way to get this backup to fit on my drive without deleting all of my older backups? Thanks for your help.

you can try deleting some of the old backups. to do that start TM and scroll to a backup you want to erase. click on the "gears" action button in finder's toolbar and select "delete backup". Repeat as many times as necessary. However, it sounds like TM wants to do a complete new backup from scratch. that will take as much space as the data you are backing up. depending on how big your TM drive is and how much data you are backing up, this might nor be feasible and you might be better off reformatting the drive and starting the backups over.

so what exactly is not working? is it not prompting you?

  • Time machine image on USB drive.....but USB needed for System restore?

I have a corrupted system image on my macbook air, that requires that I restore the system via the installer CD's....the problem is that I have a backup of my system as a time machine image, on an external, USB hard drive.
How do I do a reinstall of Mac OS, and a restore of my time machine image, if I only have one USB port that is needed to access the Installer DVD?.....how do I get my hard drive (with the Time Machine image) connected while the Mac OS installer is active?

The best answer to your question is to put the System restore disk in a remote machine and restore over the network. While slow, this will allow you to have the timemachine drive connected during the restore process.
If you do not have another machine then I am sure you can take your hardware to an Apple store and one of the Geniuses can get it up and going for you while in the store.
If you have a hub and the wired ethernet adapter that will drastically improve the speed of this process.

  • Driver Problems - and unable to system restore

    Hello!
I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo 20236 (x64) laptop, which until a few days ago, was running perfectly (and very quietly!)
However, after installing the on disc software that came with a 360 wireless receiver http://www.amazon.co.uk/747400-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Microsoft/dp/B0076GYM50/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1428828583&sr=8-4&keywords=wireless+360+controller+pc
My computer encountered numerous problems (including a case of IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL, and numerous driver malfunctions) so I read the review page for the product, which is essentially a warning not to use on disc software and how to install the necessary
    drivers from Microsoft.
After reading this, I uninstalled the wireless controller software (from the programs panel), and since then, my laptop has suffered no more IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL crashes (or any crashes). However display drivers have stopped working occasionally (which
never happened before this) and the computer now runs noticeably slower and louder with 3.1 GB of the 5.9 GB memory in use at all time.
I tried to system restore to the 4th of April, but I just got a "Please wait while your Windows files and settings are being restored" screen for half a day, before performing a hard reset.
I was running full avast before this happened, and malware bytes since. I do not have a Windows CD.
Will running a working system restore help fix this? If so, can someone please help me do that?
    Many thanks.

    Agree with S.Sengupta.
From your description it seems that a system restore cannot be performed. As the issue occurs on display card driver, it is recommended to test to reinstall it - a newer driver may be available.
I searched on Lenovo website and if G500 is your laptop, you can get the driver
    here.

  • System restore a blank hard drive???

OK.....  disaster alert... while attempting a system restore via Lenovo CD's, i had an AC power failure while my battery was also not in place. This led to complete un-bootability as my hard drive boot sector was corrupted. After several hours of immense frustration, I have regained access to my hard drive by doing a complete hard drive kill (all sectors, all partions) and remounting the boot sector with an external USB drive.
SO..... i have the recovery CD's but not the hidden recovery partition. And it seems that the CD's refuse to restore my system by themselves. It hangs every time. I know my hard drive is fine because I can load up a blank copy of Windows XP on the system without any problem.
Do the system recovery CD's somehow require the info on the recovery partition?? I thought they should be self-contained.
Please help. I am dead in the water. (using my 6-year-old former ThinkPad to post this message)...

    Hi kptomich,
Just to be clear, are you using Rescue CDs that you burned earlier from R&R, or pressed Lenovo Product Recovery CDs?
