Dual DVD's not mounting in 10.3.9

I have read countless posts in which for various reasons DVD's don't mount. There is a special case where older DVD's do mount, but newer ones (dual layer format, favored by Hollywood) do not. That is my case. People are invaribly advised to invest in a new optical drive.
I was suspicious, and decided to try restarting my older eMac in 9.2. Of course it's the same drive, just being driven by different software. All DVD's mount and play fine in 9.2.
Now, I know that not everybody has the option these days of booting up in 9.2. But at least I can scientifically state that the problem has to be software, not hardware.

Welcome to the discussions.
Maybe I can give you some information on your problem.
Many of the newer Optical Drives are in fact crippled by the Firmware. This is done because of the restrictions placed on many computers by the manufactures for copyright reasons.
Older Operating Systems were not affected by these firmware restrictions, not until the advent of all of the DVD copying, were these firmware restrictions added, to avoid Lawsuits.
DUAL LAYER technolgy can be read and copied by many of the newer Optical Drives. But as you have correctly figured out the restrictions are implamented by FIRMWARE that cripple many of these functions.
Older Commercial DVD's can be read and copied with NO problems, but as time went by the Motion Picture Industry ADDED more and more encryption and security to there DVD's to hinder the ability to copy there product.
There are of course many of the Newer Optical Drives that are known as Region Free that will allow many of the imposed restrictions to be bypassed.
There are a couple of different options, one is to use a different Player, VLC
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738
This option only works on some DVD's
The other option is for you to Rip the DVD and re-copy it and remove all the security and encrytions, this allow it to play.

  • Lacie d2 DVD+RW not mounting discs

Alright, I have a Lacie d2 DVD+RW burner. I bought it in november and it has worked perfectly since buying it.
Today I attempted to burn my first dual layer DVD, I author it in DSP 4 and then burn it using Toast 7.
So I attempted to do my first dual layer DVD burn when i was bombarded with errors from toast. Unfortunatly I cant remember what they were.
So I went and checked the file in DSP and noticed i did not switch the disc preferences to dual layer, so i fixed that and did a build again.
I went to do a burn using toast inserted my DVD and it did not reconize them as blanks.
So i did a reboot and tried inserting a blank DVD and it did not mount it, I tried putting in a normal DVD and it did not mount, I tried a CD, same thing.
So I tried a bunch of troubleshooting and nothing worked, installed all the latest firmware and still nothing. I've switched cables and still nothing.
The system profiler at work where this was going on, said everything was there and working, that is using PowerMac G5, 10.3.9
I've since taken the burner home and tried and still nothing works, at home im using iBook (10.4.8).
The system profiler at home says this,
    TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-W162L:
    Firmware Revision: LC03
    Interconnect: FireWire
    Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)
    Profile Path: None
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
    Can anyone PLEASE HELP ME!
I need the burner, because the burner on my PowerMac G5 already died.

I am currently awaiting a email from Lacie to see what they think.
I am trying to see if this is a tower problem, Lacie problem, and if it was caused by the disc which I originally tried to burn (a Verbatium DVD+R DL).
I can still control the drive, making it eject, its just not even trying to read the discs.

Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • Burned DVD+R not mounting on MBP

I have a client that has burned, in the finder on her newer iMac 27 inch (2011), a DVD+R of some photos she wants to print at a local printer. The problem is the disc is not mounting on her MacBook Pro (Late 2008). Instead the machine thinks it is a brand new DVD+R and prompts her to select how to handle it.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ben

The first thing I would try is a different brand of DVD-R. Some makers have much higher standards than others.
    Best of luck.

  • Blank CD's and DVD's not mounting - burnt disks do!

I am unable to burn CD'd and DVD's. I insert the disk, it goes in and remains in but then - Nothing. My prefs are set to Ask what to do, but none of the pref options have any impact. I can then eject the disk using the eject button. Disk Utility and System Profiler shows the Optical drive as
    Media:
    Type: CD-R
    Blank: Yes
    Erasable: No
    Overwritable: Yes
    Appendable: Yes
    Write Speeds: 8x, 16x, 24x
If I have a CD-R in the disk- so the drive is clearly identifying a blank.
    Inserting a DVD+R returns
    Type: DVD+R
    ID: RICOHJPN R02
    Blank: Yes
    Erasable: No
    Overwritable: Yes
    Appendable: Yes
    Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x
The optical drive is recognising the disk.
But the burn function is not booting.
This is independent of brand of disk. It loaded and burnt disks successfully previously and seems to be related to an OS update. I do this so rarely that I cant really date the start.
I am able to insert and read any type of burnt or recorded disks, CD's, DVD's and mount them.
Have repaired permissions and trashed anything that looks like a CD pref. Have the same problem on my wife's side so it looks like it is not limited to my user account but is a a high level system issue.

A blank disk should never mount. By definition, it has no filesystem and nothing to mount.
A blank disk should be detected and perform the action that you set in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs. If these are set to Ignore (or if the system is treating them like it's set to ignore), then nothing at all should happen when you insert a blank CD or DVD.
I would suggestion going to System Preferences and altering the setting for both CD and DVD to anything other than the value they are set at now, then insert a blank disk and see what happens. Also, try to burn a disk using a burn folder.

  • Burned DVD will not mount correctly

I have burned a dvd on my macpro and everything completed correctly. However, when I put the disc back into the drive, it does not mount correctly. The title I gave to the disc not there (it mounts as "Untitled.fpbf") and no files appear.
Ironically, I can put the DVD into another mac or pc and the title and files are on the disc.
Is there a cache file i need to delete?

The key to this little mystery is in the ".fpbf" which is evidently the designation for a Finder Backup Burnable Archive file. From what little research I've done (never had the problem myself) it's not clear how the suffix gets attached, but it has become a popular topic lately.  Googling .fpbf will get you started and with any luck this post will bump you to the top of the list and get you someone with more specific info.
    good luck

  • CS4 Install DVD does not mount on Macbook Pro after Maverick upgrade

I upgraded a Macbook Pro to Maverick from Snow Leopard. I want to install CS4 but when I put the DVD in the Superdrive, it spins and spins and eventually says that the DVD is blank. I have successfully mounted other DVD's so I don't think it is a drive problem. I have also tried the DVD in a newer model Macbook Pro and it mounts successfully. Does anyone have any idea what is causing the problem. More important, is there a different method I can use to install CS4?

I am not saying that the CS4 applications will not work but Adobe has never tested All CS4 applications on MAC Maverick. It might or might not work.

  • External cd/dvd drive not mounting on Macbook Pro with retina display, help?

Hi, I've recently purchased an amazon cd/dvd drive, this one to be exact http://www.amazon.co.uk/External-DVD-LIGHTSCRIBE-Burner-Netbook/dp/B00ABGW9J8, and it's not showing up on my desktop, sidebar or even the disc utility. When I plug it in the drive turns on and I can insert/eject discs, but it isn't mounting on my 10.9 macbook pro, any idea's how this can be fixed?

There have been numerous reports of problems with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models - both Retina and non-Retina. There was a 'fix' that was issued before ML was released that seemed to have solved some problems but not all. ML was supposed to be the real 'fix' and I've not seen too many post about USB 3.0 problems lately. It just seems as if some drives work and some don't. Apple did issue a tech note about using USB 3.0 ports - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12 - but I'm not sure that it will help you or not.
I've not read of any problems with TB storage devices, so you'll likely be OK there. It's just those USB 3.0 devices that seemed to be causing some kinks.

  • Video DVDs will not mount, gives error.

I'm getting an errors when I try to mount a DVD video. Not a DVD with data on it like the iLife installer, which works just fine, but your common video DVD. I've tried a bunch of random DVDs from my video library and they either give an error dialog saying it can't read them or it just doesn't say anything at all.
I also got the following 2 errors in the console when I opened DVD Player:

  • Data DVD Does Not Mount

I burned some quick time movies onto a DVD today using the Super Drive on my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. I then attempted to load the DVD on my Macbook. It would not load and Disc Utility does not see the disc either. I have restarted numerous times. I have tested movie DVDs and CDs and both work just fine. I have also tested the newly made DVD on an iBook where it loads just fine.
Is there anything I am missing? The new Super Drive update does not apply to this computer as I cannot burn DVDs.
Any suggestions or help would be great.
    Debbie

did you do the superdrive updater on the macbook that had that problem?
are the media you using is dual layer media that might have incompatibility problem with combodrive?
Try to burn with other brand or media (sinle layer, dvd-r and or dvd+r).
Try to test that dvd with other mac that has combodrive (I think your ibook does have that).
If this problem persist, consult with apple or visit nearest apple store and bring along your burned disk and your other mac.
    Good Luck.

  • CD or DVD will not mount

I have an iMac 24in 2.8Gig running 10.5.6 that refuses to mount, eject or see any CD or DVD since yesterday. I assumed initially it was a possible hardware issue, but if I boot off of a clone of my boot drive from about a month ago, the CD/DVD's work normally.
I can even boot from the CD if I hold down the option key.
Things I have tried to fix this while booted into the problem boot drive:
System sees the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A with no issue
Ran techtools pro - found nothing.
    zap PRAM
    fix permissions(twice)
    fix disk errors(didnt find any)
I then resorted to an archive/install of 10.5, but even that didnt fix it.
My next move will be to do a fresh install of the OS and restore via TM.
I have a sneaking suspicion there is a faulty driver/file that controls the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A that is not in its appropriate state and the archive install somehow didnt fix it.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Damian,
I am having the same issue. I was just burned a disk less than 4 weeks ago. I had been holding off on the 10.5.6 update and can't remember if I did the update after my last use?? Could this be the culprit??
I'm going to see if I can go back.
Let me know if you come across an answer. Thanks,
    Narvon
PS I can't even get the tray to open. I opened the Mac box and both (I have 2) trays will open manually, but they still won't mount.

  • DVD-R not mounting

I am trying to burn an iDVD project to DVD-R. I did this just two days ago and it worked fine, now my DVDs are ejected after a minute or so of whirring noises in the DVD drive.
CDs, DVD ROMs, and DVD movies all work. I've tried inserting the blank DVD when iDVD is not running just so see if it is recognized, no luck.
Help! This is a very important project that I am supposed to have burned by tomorrow!

The first thing I would try is a different brand of DVD-R. Some makers have much higher standards than others.
