Dual Ethernet G5; can I route applications to a specific ethernet port?

I have a G5 with dual ether net ports. I also have two networks; one Cable Modem, and one FIOS. Can I route certain programs, such as Fetch, safari, etc. to use a specific network?
For example, I want the Digidelivery Client to always use the cable internet connection, while Safari and Fetch use the FIOS. I want to know if it is possible without switching locations.

Thank you for your response. Can tell me how by an example, my attempts were unsuccessful.

  • Creating Dual Ethernet ports and separateing Internet vs. LAN

I have a situation in a shared office where I would like to be on the LAN so as to be able to share files and peripheral equipment such as printers, but I would like to have my own dedicated highspeed DSL service instead of what is provided and shared by the rest of the LAN. What is the best way to go about this?
Can I install a second Ethernet card in my G5 and have the connection from the DSL modem go directly into that port? If so, how would I tell the computer to use that port for Internet instead of using the other used for LAN? I mean since technically I would have dual Internet services coming to my machine (one through my LAN and the other through the secondary Ethernet port) how could it know which one to access?

  • Dual Ethernet Ports

My server has 2 ethernet ports. Is there any advantage to having both of them connected to the switch? If so, how do I set it up for best throughput?

Actually yes there is. You can bond those two nics together to form one logical link. Of coarse the switch your using needs to support Aggregated links as well as your os. In most cases this is quite hard to setup and can actually hinder performance if setup incorrectly. If done correctly will add more throughput and have a layer of failover capability such as to another core switch in your network.

  • Question with regard to dual ethernet ports

First let me say that I am a novice at networking, so this may be a stupid question. I had my network plugged into on of the ethernet ports and was unable to access a forum I visit. I could access most every other website, but not this particular one. I switched the ethernet cable to the other port and the problem resolved itself. Why would I be able to access it from the one port and not the other?

  • Dual Ethernet Ports, and Air Port Wifi

I have a early 2008 and 2009 Mac Pro and was wondering if there was a way to connect both ethernet ports and the airport wifi as one "adress" so i would essentially have 3x the bandwith for downloading/uploading, etc.
This is in both Snow Leopard and Win XP Via Boot Camp

You might start by reviewing this thread and associated links:

Apparently it should be possible to link the ethernet ports together but not the wireless.

  • Help configuring dual ethernet ports

We have a Linksys router doing NAT/firewall and its connected to the WAN. . No DHCP server is running. It has an internal IP of 192.168.16.1 / 255.255.255.0. It plugs in directly to a Linksys business series switch.
I have an intel xserve with dual nics and no idea how to configure them, but I want the server to handle AFP/DHCP/DNS, while a G4 handles mail.
My assumption was to give en0 this setup:
    ip: 192.168.16.5
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
    router: 192.168.16.1
    dns: isp's numbers
    en1:
    ip: 192.168.10.1
    subnet: 255.255.255.248
    router: 192.168.10.1
    dns: 192.168.10.1
Is this setup correct? Because I can't get it to resolve correctly even though I am using a FQDN

I should also add that our website is being hosting externally with a private hosting company. However, we want to host our mail internally on the G4.

    Hi Camelot
    Ah I see. I'm using a Draytek 2910.

You can check-out the control panel live DEMO here:

I assume what I need to do is use the Load-Balance Policy feature under the WAN menu item to set up a list of rules. Could I, for example, have all connections to exampleproviderA.com (10.11.12.13) routed through WAN1 (ie my ADSL connection 1) and have all connections to exampleproviderB.com (20.21.21.23) routed through WAN2. I assume a rule like this would stop accidental requests being sent from the wrong IP?
    Have I got this right?
    Many thanks again,

  • Dual ethernet query - any point?

    Hi,
I've got a Mac Pro and have a spare port available on my modem/router so could plug another network cable into the ethernet port. I don't fully understand the benefit of having the two ports, certainly not for a home user. Could someone explain if have two connections would help me, or its it overkill for your basic home network?

Not sure if this helps or makes sense to anyone, but one use I have found for the dual Ethernet ports involves using Parallels with the following setup:
    (1) Connect each port on the Mac Pro to a switch and/or router/switch. You can obtain a different IP address for each port via DHCP or, if necessary, statically (use Preferences -> Network). The port labeled 1 is device en0 and the port labeled 2 is device en1, as easily verified with /Applications/Utilities/Network Utility -> Info. (By the way, if you have Airport Extreme installed, it is assigned device en2.)
    (2) Using System Preferences -> Network, assign Built-in Ethernet 1 highest priority (using Network Port Configurations). Then, your Mac Pro will use this port and IP address as its primary internet connection.
    (3) If using Parallels, you can assign the en1 (i.e., Built-in Etherner 2) port to the Windows network adapter using the Configuation Editor -> Network Adapter Options -> Bridged Ethernet and select en1 (or you can share en0 or use Airport Extreme, en2, if you have it).
    (4) This configuration will give you independent simultaneous network connectivity on your Mac and on the Virtual Windows machine (Parallels), each with its own separate IP address, and ability to (depending on your router's configurability) enable/block certain ports, as one example.
    Hope this helps,

  • How can I configure one of the gateway NI9792 Ethernet port to communicate with a cRIO PAC ?

  • RT: How do I use two independent Ethernet ports?

I have looked around at the forums and seems like no one has had a real solid answer or example on how to use 2 Ethernet ports with RT.
Right now I have two connections configured on the RT:
    Primary Connection:
    IP:192.168.2.181
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
    Secondary Connection:
    IP:192.168.1.180
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
After using this initial setup, I made a RT project where I used 'UDP Open' for both 192.168.2.181 and 192.168.1.180, and had them both read and write in a sequence (Read and Write for the 2.181 connection, then Read/Write for 1.180).
The computer I'm using to send the data is connected to a switch, which in turn is connected to the RT. Both the RT and my host computer have 2 ports, one of them with ports configured to be 192.168.2.x and 192.168.1.x
Using this configuration I get some weird results:
If I send a packet to 192.168.2.181, I receive it from the UDP Receive vi that has an input connection from my UDP Open assigned to 1.180. I also receive the data the same way when sending packets to 1.180 (as expected). Basicly, no matter what IP I'm sending it to on the RT, the data from either packet will arrive from the same location/vi.
Why is this? Is there anyway to fix this? Did I not configure something correctly?
Does anyone have an example of dual Ethernet ports actually working with LabView RT?
I tried checking out "KnowledgeBase 3VQ6278T: Can I Use Multiple Network Adapters in a PXI or Desktop Real-Time System?", but after following the link to the page, I get:
"Error You are not authorized to view this document". Can any NI people look into this?
Having to make two IPs with different subnet masks obviously just makes things unnecessarily complicated. Can anyone tell me why LabView/NI did this? I know for a fact this isn't a limitation in hardware.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Hey Weizbox.
Sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time using multiple ethernet devices with RT.
Let me go ahead and get the easy stuff out of the way, the link you
have is dead because it's archived (and thus removed forever) though
unfortunately the link on ni.com wasn't corrected to point to the
following resource, which the KB was a word-for-word duplication of
(which is supposedly why it was removed):
        http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370622C-01/lvrthelp/configuringdual/
Unfortunately, though, it's much less useful than it sounds.
Before you start feeling like a woodpecker in a petrified forest, lemme
fill you in on why the requirement is there for the two ethernet NICs
to be on seperate subnets.  Simple enough, it has to do with the
network stack on both of the operating systems used for LabVIEW
Real-Time - however, the same falls true for even Windows (without
using fancy vendor-specific drivers), so let's not be too hasty.
Neither PharLap ETS nor VxWorks, the two OS's used under the hood,
support redundant network ports.  Because of this, if you give two (or
more in the case of PXI and RT Desktop) ethernet devices IP addresses
on the same subnet the routing tables in the network stack get horribly
confused and literally cannot resolve the proper adapter, which either
brings down the ethernet on the entire system or makes it such that one
or more network adapters becomes useless and one adapter takes over all
network traffic (there's no way to predict which adapter that will be,
nor can you control it based on what's plugged in and what's not).  On
Windows this is handled by bridging the adapters, but RT does not yet
support bridging (that opens a whole nother can of worms).  Long story
short, you still wouldn't be able to give both NICs individual IP
    addresses on the same subnet.
Let's take that even one more step.  You cannot simply just assign both
ethernet NICs different IP addresses on "virtual" subnets, you actually
need to put both NICs on literally different subnets for the network
routing to actually work.  Multiple ethernet devices for LabVIEW RT
were designed with the following mantra in mind - "The FIRST ethernet
device is designed for a TCP/IP network, the SECOND and SUBSEQUENT
ethernet device is designed for OTHER protocol uses."  By "OTHER
protocol uses" I mean the second NIC should be used for RT
Deterministic Ethernet (PXI, RT Desktop, et. al.), direct connections
with other targets, and 3rd party or custom ethernet protocols.
Now, realistically, we can't expect users to not use the second NIC for
TCP/IP use, nor should we.  However, if you ARE going to use TCP/IP on
the second NIC, you should only use the second NIC for connecting to an
unroutable network in the eyes of the first NIC.  So, for instance, the
FIRST NIC can have an IP address of 10.0.62.128, but the SECOND NIC
would need to have an IP address on 192.168.100.23  - and the
10.0.62.128 should not be able to route a TCP packet to the 192.168.x.x
network, and vice versa.  In your example I noticed that both networks
used the same Gateway - unless your Gateway is configured to identify
and seperate the two networks, it's not going to end well, and you
shouldn't expect to be able to send data from one NIC to the other NIC
(at least with what you know now).  To reiterate, using multiple NICs
using TCP/IP should only be done in cases where you've got (n-1)
isolated subnets, where n is the number of NICs you have using TCP/IP.
    A classic example of this is a command-based measurement environment;
the RT system uses the FIRST NIC to talk to a TCP/IP network, in order
to transfer data or provide status to a network, and the second NIC is
connected to a TCP/IP network designed specifically for measurement or
control, where one node sends commands to a single or multiple nodes on
the network at once to perform tasks (like "Take a Measurement", "Stop
a motor", "Bake me a Pie", etc...).  The isolated TCP/IP subnet is free
from "random" TCP/IP traffic (especially system announcement
broadcasts) and can have whatever topology/configuration it wants.  The
dual networking allows the RT system to work/communicate/perform on
    both networks.
I hope this helps shed some light on your situation.
    Cheers!

  • Problem with two ethernet ports?

There is little consistency to this, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar problem. I upgraded to 10.6 on my Mac Pro. I have two ethernet connections which run concurrently in my network setup - one internally addressed, using a manual IP with DHCP, the other an external address with a static IP. On an inconsistent basis, opening pages in Safari will result in failures because I am apparently not connected to the internet, despite the fact that I am - Mail continues to work fine, server connections remain, etc., etc. The only way to get Safari to work again is to disable one of the ethernet ports. Reenabling it after I have successfully made a Safari connection does not then break the connection again - it keeps running for quite a while. The problem seems to become more apparent when I open a selected group of links into tabs - some will be successful, most will fail. Ideas?

Snoop Dogg thanks for the reply.
Port ONE was set to auto DNS. I did exactly as you suggested, I even tried a to do a manual ip address, etc but no luck. What finally worked is, I moved the port one cable to port two (which was empty) and bingo it worked.
It seems that snow leopard may have some issues with dual ethernet port machines, but why port two worked and port one didn't is beyond me. I will try to reverse it back to port one and see what happens. Fortunately I don't need two port at this point.
    Cheers, Terry.

  • Can I activate the ethernet ports (routing) of Time Capsule "joining" an existing non-Apple wireless network ?

    Hello,
I have a DSL modem that is also a WIFI router as my main WIFI network from room A. In room B, I have a TC wirelessly joining the existing WIFI network (not creating a new one). That works fine, I have one SSID, and I can wirelessly access the TC disks and backup my Mac on my TC.
Now, I would like to connect a wired device (with on WIFI) to the ethernet port of my TC. Unfortunately, the ethernet ports of the TC don't seem to be "activated" as they do not have internet on them.
More precisely, I'd like to connect a GE Cordless Skype Phone Model# 31591 (http://www.gephones.com/products/skype/dect-6-0-expandable-digital-cordless-phon e-with-skypetm.html) that connects to a router via Ethernet. I'm aware that I could simply connect it to the DLS router, but that's not what I want... Is there any way to activate the ethernet ports of the TC while in "join" mode ? Or do I really have to buy a Airport Express to create my main network and then extend it ?!?

Thanks, the reason why I asked again, is because you told me to start another thread with the specifics of the device I want to connect, so I did
Not a big deal, and it is easy to become confused.....but to be clear about this
    Your question.....
is there a way I can connect my Bluray player to the TC ?
    My Answer.....
Please start a new post for that. Tell us the make and model number of the player and whether you plan to connect using wireless or Ethernet.
so I tried to creat the main WIFI network with a first-generation Airport Express M9470LL/A (802.11b/g, no "draft N" or "n" support) and the TC wouldn't extend it either, is it too old/not supported
Unfortunately, the "extend" setup will only work with "n" devices.  The older Express does not have a setting to "Allow this network to be extended", so the Time Capsule cannot pick up the signal.
I'm not sure what else to suggest other than what I already have.  I'm assuming that you do not want to buy another new Airport Express.

  • Quantum Gateway G1100 router - can't get ethernet ports to work?!

I just got a Quantum Gateway G1100 router, and the improvement in wireless networking speed over my old Actiontec router is as advertised.
However, I find that I can’t get any of my wired devices to connect to the router via any of the four yellow Ethernet ports on the back of the unit. I can only connect to this thing wirelessly. Hooking up my PC to the router with an Ethernet cable gets me no connection, not even to the router itself at 192.168.1.1 (or myfiosgateway.com).
I have a PC, a printer, a network drive/media server and a Roku all wired to my router, none of them are detected. I can connect my PC and Roku wirelessly, but the network drive and printer must be wired.
The instructions act like it should be plug-and-go for the Ethernet ports, which has always been my experience with other routers over 10+ years of using Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Actiontec, etc., units. Usually it’s the wireless network config that has hiccups. This is a first for me.
Am I missing something obvious? I’ve swapped back in my old Actiontec router just to check things out, and the wired devices all see my home network and the internet as well.
Interestingly, if I go to the “My Network” tab on the router, I see one and only one Ethernet device. I don’t know what it is, and it is labeled “Active”, but it’s sitting on 192.168.1.4, which is the static IP address I’d configured my network drive to grab, yet it is not the network drive (any attempt to connect to it just times out).

it does give me an IP address for the ethernet connection - 192.168.1.151 - that is different from the one for the wireless connection, which is 192.168.1.152.  I can see both of these listed on the router's connections as well, in the My Network tab, if I Show All.   But if I disable the wireless, my PC cannot ping either iteself or the router at 192.168.1.1.
In fact, I can ping 192.168.1.152 (the wireless connection) but never 192.168.1.151.
There is no IP address for my other wired devices, except that I do see 192.168.1.4 appearing, which is the static address of the network drive device.  But I cannot connect to it (there is a web and media server running on the device which ordinarily pops up a config screen at 192.168.1.4).

Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except "join a wireless network (which it does) not "extend a wireless network" (Led turns yellow and I can not get a network working on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Router.
    Airport gets it address DHCP.

Funny how I can ping the Extreme but the Hard Ethernet ports dont seem to work correctly.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "Join" a wireless network, the Ethernet ports are not enabled.
Oddly, the AirPort Express has a special feature that will allow it to to "Join" virtually any wireless network.....and the Ethernet port can be enabled. So, an Express would work for your purpose to provide an Ethernet connection to the media player. This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main router.
Note that the Express will not provide any additional wireless coverage when it "Joins".
