Dual Ethernet (Tiger Server) = VNC only connection

I have come across a strange problem- only the VNC icon shows on one of our servers. I know all about ports 5900 and 3283, but it happens even when the Firewall is disabled (and I am on the same subnet). I just discovered that I can get it to come up as a regular ARD connection if I disconnect one of the [gigabit] ethernet ports. FYI, I am sure it is the cause of the problem- every time I plug in the 2nd port, it goes to VNC only.
I had trouble joining this machine as an OD replica until I disconnected one of the ports as well, but I don't understand why ARD cares.
Any thoughts? Workarounds? We would like to use both ports. We intend to have a lot of traffic to this machine and would like to use one port primarily for uploading data.
TIA,
Brett
Quad 2.5 Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi,
I appear to have a similar problem with another hardware/system combiation : macmini running 10.3.9.
From time to time, it appears to be only a VNC computer, and RD doesn't allow me to produce reports or complete any of the possible tasks it allows. I can still control the screen of course, but nothing more.
I've read across all related messages, but it apears that either the problem is not solved, either it was a misconfiguration problem.
Here I'm sure of my config' because, I've got other Macs in my list that behave perfectly well. So the settings from my side are correct, and I don't know what to do further than opening and forwarding the 3283 and 5900 ports on the macmini.
For a couple of weeks the problem has became stalled, even reboots haven't fixed it. The only hack I did a month ago was to install and run osXvnc server on another port. I've stopped it for a while now, but it appears like it's still recongnized...

  • Accessing Server when only connected via Internet Sharing

Currently, I don't have the ability to directly connect my Mac Pro which I use as a Server to the router as I have no direct access to it via cable and it does not have an Airport card.
However, I can access the internet on it if I use internet sharing on my iMac which is connected via Gigabit Ethernet to the Mac Pro at all times.
In order to use any of the services such as Time Machine from another machine, I always need to connect it directly by cable. This leaves me wondering if there is a way to tunnel the Mac Pro through the iMac so it is accessible via Wifi? Is there a setting on either Machine I have to activate / set to make this work?
It is only thought to be a temporary solution until I move to a new flat where it will be directly connected to an Airport Extreme.
    Thanks for your help!

Seems that the issue is something to do with connecting via WPA2. When I set Internet Sharing to use WEP (by option-clicking the security menu), I'm then able to see the network shares and the printer.

I have added a Mac Mini to my network. It is connected via ethernet cable to my ABS Dual Ethernet Snow. I can connect each computer via the ABS.
The Mac Mini is one of the early models and has no Airport Extreme.
Is it possible to use the ABS to connect to my BT Home Hub router wirelessly?

No. The Dual Ethernet AirPort base station (ABS) can not be used as a wireless client.

  • No Airport Connection Using Tiger Server

Using clean install Tiger Server on Pudding Basin iMac
Can connect to the internet via cable connection from router but cannot configure Airport. iMac can "See" the network but when I enter the WEP code, it says that there is an error connecting to the network.
I am sure that it is a box that I have left un-ticked or ticked but since I do not understand the terminology, I do not know where to start. I thought that I would just use a 'Wizard' to get going but I cannot find one.
Is there a kindly soul on this forum who can point me in the right direction?
    Warmly,
    Malcolm

The ethernet I would not know of, but I have had this problem before too with the wireless. Infact, 1 of my computers had this problem and one of them worked perfectly fine too. I also have a 2-wire gateway. I use a WPA pass-code.
It would tell me connection timeout and all sorts of other stuff. I restarted the 2-wire device and that worked for me. Then I decided to use time capsule as a second wireless network so if 2 wire didn't work for my computer, I would be able to switch to the time capsule (which would be using double-nat, which is easy to set up), if the network didn't work. If you had time capsule and wanted only 1 wireless network, then go to http://home click on wireless networks and on the right side of the screen should be a wireless disable button.
*This shouldn't be a problem with the iMac* unless you cant connect to any network like your neighbors of something.

  • Dual Ethernet will not connect if set to share Single IP address

The subject says it all. My trusty old Dual Ethernet will not connect if set to share Single IP address.
I cannot get anything but a self assigned IP address with it set to share a single IP address.
Before about Tuesday of last week I had connected to it a Mac mini, iMac, Dell Desktop, Dell Laptop, and PS3 all working fine. I think Comcast or Apple updated their system or Airport software and now the old dual Ethernet will not share a single IP address.

So far as I know, there has been no recent change in Apple's software affecting the Snow (a/k/a Dual Ethernet) base station. About 2-1/2 weeks ago, Apple distributed an update to AirPort software for Intel Macs running Tiger, but it would not have affected the base station.
Your topic implies that when the Snow is not set to share a single IP address (i.e., presumably, when "Distribute IP addresses" is unchecked in the Network pane of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow), one of the computers is connecting to the Internet through the base station. I also imagine that the self assigned IP address you mention is the IP address of that computer, rather than of the base station, and that that computer obtains an IP address from Comcast when the Snow is not distributing IP addresses.
Assuming that that computer is connecting wirelessly, then whatever settings that computer is using for TCP/IP and PPPoE in the AirPort part of System Preferences, while the computer connects to the Internet, should be the ones used for the base station, in the Internet pane of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow. (Most likely, it is simply "Using DHCP.") The IP address obtained from Comcast should be received by the base station, when it is set to distribute IP addresses in the Network pane, and the IP address should show up in the Internet pane. (When the Snow is distributing IP addresses, it has two IP addresses itself, a WAN IP address obtained from Comcast and a LAN IP address, 10.0.1.1, visible only to devices in your network.)
Even when the settings are correct, the Snow might not be able to obtain an IP address if your cable modem remembers the computer, which had been receiving the IP address previously. You'll probably need to shut down the computers and unplug power to the base station and cable modem. After waiting 5 minutes, restore power to the modem, then after another 5 minutes, restore power to the base station, then after another 5 minutes, start up a computer.

  • Client Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard Can No Longer Connect to Tiger Server

I just finished upgrading a G5 2GHz DP Powermac from Tiger to Leopard. This was an Archive and Install upgrade with importing the old settings. After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    OK. A quick update.
After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Airport Dual Ethernet connecting to DSL.

My normal system is a Windows XP PC connected to 2wire dsl router from SBC. My wife has an iBook(the white one)that we are trying to get connected to the internet using an Airport Dual ethernet. THe iBook has a wireless card installed and before I moved all I did was plug the airport into the DSL router and all was well. Now what is happening is that as soon as I plug the airport into the router it I lose my PC internet connection, even more frustrating is that I still can't access the interent via the iBook.
I am totally unfamiliar with the Mac OS so this just adds to my frustration. Are there any resources/guidance/books that would help a new wireless Mac user on configuring the airport to connect to the same router as a windows PC without screwing it all up?
    Any help would be awesome.

PC   Windows XP Pro   Airport Dual Ethernet

Hello, I'm new to Mac's as well, but I hope I can help narrow down the source of the problem a little.
You said "and before I moved all I did was". I take that to mean you moved from one home to another. Does that mean that you also have a new DSL service provider (which means they provided you with the DSL router you are using. A couple things to try to semi isolate the problem, or at least try to narrow it down to one device having issues.
Try to connect to the internet with each computer individually using the DSL router, one at a time. Do they both work that way?
Try connecting the airport only, then connecting to the internet with each computer individually (the other should be powered down so it doesn't try to connect when wireless becomes available {hopefully}). Do they work this way?
If they work, or one does but not the other you have provided yourself wirh a wealth of information to offer the experts (no that's not me), I'm afraid I won't be much help beyond this. The reason for this method is that you may discover that something has happened to your system(s) (hopefully not) during your move(?), or your service provider (new) may have provided you with a faulty router (just a couple of possibilities).
Another thing, have you installed any new software, or updates recently, like just before the connection stopped working.
    Hope this helps.

  • Tiger Server boots but refuses all connections

    Hi,
I've had a trusty old Powermac G4 (AGP) running Tiger Server (10.4.11) for almost a year now. We use it to serve OD, NFS homes, MySQL & printing. Apart from the occasional issues setting up the mobile home folders, it has been doing great. It has 896 MB of RAM and 3 HDD (two 500 MB and one 80MB one).
However, after suffering a power outage, the machine has stopped accepting any kind of connection to it (ssh, web, vnc, OD, nfs,...). Morever, although it seems to boot ok, we can't get past the login screen. Neither network nor local accounts are accepted.
I've booted from an external installation media to check the system drive (repair disk and permissions) and things are still not working.
    Any ideas?

Access it from another FireWire Mac via Target Disk Mode and then follow my standard instructions:
    Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you install. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk or another Mac. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk. If you do not have a disk or partition without an OS it will probably not be practical to produce a bootable OS at this stage so backup to a sparse disk image for the time being and ensure that you have sufficient partitions in future.
    Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install. I prefer to split disks into two partitions with a full OS on each so that one can be used to maintain the other.
    During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.

  • Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?

Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?
I know that it works marvelous for printers connected via USB, but I'd like to know if you can use it as a more general print server.

No, you can't, but what do you expect to gain by doing so?
The main advantage of the print server is to provide multi-user network access to a printer that typically only supports a single connection. Since, by definition, your printer already has a network connection and can be used by multiple users.

  • How do I use time capsule as a direct backup drive only connect to my macbook pro via ethernet cable

I have recently abandoned my cable internet service provider and am using my iPad as a hotspot via verizon wireless service.  I am trying to reconfigure my time capsule as a back up drive only connected by an ethernet cable.
I was able to set it up on my new hotspot wireless net, but do not want to use it that way because of the data usage impact on my verizon wireless account.
Hopefully there is an easy answer, but it is not intuitively obvious to me.

Well I have to say you can do it.. but if you are plugging and unplugging ethernet, you could just as easily plug and unplug an external USB drive.. and it will be faster and more reliable than the TC.
I explained how to do the TC as a secondary network in the posts here. Look down the bottom of the discussion.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
If any of that doesn't make sense just post again here..
You can also do it with wireless if you accept using a USB wireless stick plugged into the Mac.. then you have two wireless clients and can connect simultaneously to two different networks.. using the same principles as above that you remove the gateway and dns problems that arise by manual settings.

Are the same as mine  it seems a s though there may be a poor quality  antenna on e new iPhone 5 s models and a lesser quality of a product  this seems to be a trend with iPhone  and it is very disappointing. Is there anything that can be done and also could you start building your newer products with better performance parts.  (If it's not broke don't fix it). I want my iPhone 4 back lol.    I have done a hard reset to resolve my issue and I have checked my wifI signal side by side with other phones and I pad.  Please let  me know if anything can be done thanks you

if this is the case with all wifi routers then I would say that the wifi antenna of the iphone5 is broken or not connected

    Hello everyone,

The MACMINI runs headless, what means, that that there is no physical display-device plugged. I am connected to the MACMINI from my MAC-BOOK Air via VNC.
What I get on the TV-Screen looks like that:
I've found another description of the same problem somewhere in the internet and I adopted the photo there.
Here is the link to that other Problem-Description:

I can verify this also.  It's not super importatn in the scheme of things, but will be nice to have fixed.

  • VPN server only connected to a WAN

    Hi,
I have configured a VPN server on a xserve directly connected to the Internet (public IP address on en0 interface). The server is not connected to a LAN (no cable on en1 interface).
The VPN clients ("roadwarriors" clients) are assigned a 10.0.0.x private IP address.
My question is: what is the correct setup to have a private IP on the server?
1/ Should I configure en1 interface with a 10.0.0.x IP address (the panel won't apply the settings because there is no cable plugged BUT I can do it with a simple "ifconfig en1 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up" command in a terminal).
2/ Or should I create a virtual interface and assign a 10.0.0.x IP to it (ifconfig vlan0 create)?
And yes there is a logic to have such a setup (expose only the VPN service on the server from the Internet side, but open access to all other services only to VPN clients like for example mail. This is why I do need a private IP address for the server).
Note: I was using previously openvpn on a Linux server and did not have such problem as openvpn creates a tun0 interface on the server side with its own private address.

setup macmini with public wan ip.
This is what i did and i have a firewall problem
    I created a en1 interface with
    sudo ifconfig en1 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
I enabled the pptp protocol in the vpn setup.
    enable pptp
    start ip 10.0.0.1
    end ip 10.0.0.5
    authentication mschap
    in the client information
for the dns server I used opendns
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    network routing definition
    10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 private
I now goto the firewall settings
I check the box to allow for group ANY
    vpn PPTP port 1723
i goto address group and create a group called vpn
I add the five ip's i have set the vpn server to assign to the clients. I choose allow All for this group.
I goto my mac book and setup the pptp connection. It lets me authenticate and I get an ip address of 10.0.0.2 from the server. however web, email and other services dont work.
I check the firewall log in the mac mini and sure nuff 10.0.0.2 is getting denied for lots of services.

I have a very similar problem with my AE! My MacBook, MacBook Pro & iPod Touch (1st Generation) all get a GREAT signal from our AE. BUT, our iPod Touch (2nd Generation) and new iPad (WiFi) get terrible signal strength unless we're right next to the AE!! Tech support at Apple is of no help! I'm ready to sell them all! This all started when we got the last OS update for iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad. So it must be a software issue not a hardware one..
