Dual G4 MDD - getting a 23" ACD - video card?

I'm going to get a 23" ACD, and need to know if I need a new video card.
Currently, I have an AIT Radeon 9000 Pro card, with 64 MB RAM. It has a squarish-ended DVI connector on it, as well as VGA.
I also have an ATI VGA card (chipset ATI, RV100) with 32 MB RAM. It has a round-ended DVI connection on it, as well as VGA.
Do I need to get a new video graphics card for my dual G4 (1.25 GHz MDD) to run the 23" ACD?
What about the built-in USB 2.0 ports on the ACD? Will they work via either of those cards?
If not what cards would be good choices? (I don't do any video gaming.)
Should I get AppleCare protection for the monitor?
Anything else I should consider?
Thanks!

Hi-
The Radeon 9000 will drive the 23" ACD just fine. The "squarish-ended DVI connector" if not mistaken, is a DVI port, which is what is needed to connect the ACD. Confirm your cards connections with this article.
The other card, with the "round-ended DVI connection" is probably a Radeon 7500 with an ADC connector, and would require an ADC to DVI adapter. It too, will support the 23" ACD optimal resolution.
The 9000 will be the better card, though, so no need to worry about it (the adapter)....
The ACD USB can connect to either USB 1.1 or USB 2.0. You can connect to the USB port on your tower, or to a USB 2.0 PCI adapter.
If you desire to use USB 2.0 devices (the ACD doesn't require USB 2.0) a USB 2.0 PCI adapter will be necessary. To get optimal results from a USB 2.0 PCI card, get a card that has the NEC chipset. Via and Ali chipsets are problematic, and should be avoided.
Some USB 2.0 cards that have the NEC chipset are:
Adaptec 3100LP
BAFO BF-460
Belkin F5U220
GWC UC-160
IOGear GIC250U
Keyspan U2PCI-5
O'toLink U2-C2B
O'toLink U2-C2A
O'toLink U2-P20N
O'toLink U2-P50
Ratoc PCIU5
USBWholesale UII-PCIP
Your final connection will be firewire, and that connects to the towers firewire port.
As for Apple care, when I bought my monitor, I didn't buy Apple care. I have enjoyed trouble free performance from day one, but, when the warranty got to the last week, I went ahead and bought Apple care. I figured that it was worth the investment of another $100 as insurance on the display.
Whether you need it or not, is a decision you need to make......but the peace of mind knowing that your covered is nice!
The 23" is an excellent monitor, and I have a hard time imagining life without it. I have other computers with different monitors, and the 23"ACD is definitely my favorite!
Enjoy!

I have a Mac Pro earley 2008 with 16gb ram and the original ATI Radeon 2600 XT 256mb ram card.
After searching everywhere and finding no helpful info I just went to amazon and serched video cards for Mac Pro. The Asus HD 6450 silent and others came up. They all show PC compatibatily but since Mac is now PC structure I think allmost any card will work that is PCI-e.
I purchased the Asus HD 6450  for $39.00 with $10 rebate and it worked great, ( plug and play ).
My startup is way faster than before and graphics are way better.
The DVI works great with my Viewsonic and if you need to connect more than one monitor the DVI and VGA are secondary. If your main monitor is HDMI than you will have no problems using more than 2 screens in sharing mode.

  • G5 video cards

Hi Joe, I've been lurking trying to find the real answer to my question, to no avail, and saw you'd recently been posting here (we appreciate that). I've got a Dual 2.0 G5 that has a video card that will not even allow installation of Aperture v1.1. I looked at the Apple Store, and alas you apparently sell no video cards that will allow me to upgrade, thuds being able to use Aperture. My computer is not that old, and I really don't think I should be expected to buy a current CPU in order to run this software.
What are my options? I've heard about some third party card-hacks which allow mac users to use 'supported' video cards that apparently we cannot get as 'Apple-certified' cards, but I don't want to go that route. I must admit that I'm quite puzzled that Aperture has video requirements that eclipse that of even a robust piece of software like Final Cut Pro, yet I could buy a 'low-end' MacBook and run it. Why not at least allow installation on G5 machines so we're not hobbled after updates? After all, didn't the v1.1 update effectively lock out people that were able to run v1.0 on their existing hardware?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks again, Ian.

  • What are the benefits of having two video cards?

I currently have a PNY Nvidio quadro FX 3800 video card installed.  I have another card that is not installed.  It is an EVGA E-GEforce 8800GT.  I only want to run two monitors.  I am thinking with two video cards I will have live preview on screen during HD video capture.  Is this correct?  What if any other benefits will I get from running two video cards?

    Hello
I am using CS5 with a quadro 4000 card. I have two Eizo's attached to the quadro 4000 via the display port. Everything is working fine. I need to connect a plasma screen to my pc (3 monitors total) for viewing red files. I could use the red rocket to export video to the plasma screen but it would be nice if I didn't have to install another driver other than the quadro 4000 nvideo driver. My question is, will having 2 video cards installed in my pc cause any problems? If it will, I will have to use the red rocket for the third monitor. Thanks

  • ADC/dvi video  card

Is it possible to get a ADC/Dvi video card for an open PCi X slot? or would I be better off getting a card w/2 dvis and purchasing the adapter because it is older technology? I have an older 23" display.

A PCI slot wouldn't have the extra connector that provides the display power, so ADC cards are only made for AGP slots.

  • What video cards will the p7-1423w support?

I would like to upgrade my video graphics to something that will support Witcher 2.  I picked up a video card but then realized the power consumption is too great for this pc.  Any suggestions on what card I can get that will support this type of graphics?  (It is a windows 8 machine if that makes any difference.)
    Thanks!

    Hello Leach69,
There are two things to consider when purchasing a video card. The slots that are available in your computer and the power supply that is already in the computer. If you are looking to play modern games you are going to need a good video card, as you already know. I would suggest that you also consider upgrading your power supply to something that provides more power so that you can use that card that does use more power consumption.
Upgrading the power supply is also going to give you the freedom to do other upgrades in the future if you choose to do so. The power supply that is currently in your computer is only 300w from what I can tell, this means you are going to be extremely limited.
I'd suggest upgrading your power supply to something around a 550w - 600w then you can get just about any video card you want as long as you have the slot for it.

  • Matrox g200 Video Card, mga driver not working in Xorg7

Hello!  This is my first post in the forum...greetings everyone!
So I'm trying to get a Matrox g200 Video Card working -- but I get an error mga_hal module missing...
I've done a few searches and come up basically empty.  I have seen from another user on this forum that I can use the Vesa driver...just wondering if anyone's found a soloution to using this card under xorg7...?
I tried installing the driver from their site...however, it detects that I'm running xorg7 and refuses to install...
Any ideas?  Surely someone has already been down this road...
    Thanks

  • Benefits of upgrading the 2008 mac pro video card?

I have the 8800 video card in my 2008 2.8 mac pro and am considering getting the radeon 4870 video card as an upgrade.
Will this card provide any real benefits to my system for things like Photoshop and FCP or is it a waste of money?
Also, might snow leopard make better use of the 4870 card as opposed to the 8800 card in my situation?
    Thanks for any advice.

Give 10.6 a year, along with CS5, and maybe. I wouldn't bet my life on it but ATI does tend to be better written for OpenGL.
The 8800 isn't too shabby in some tests.
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal06.html
And the 4870 does better in 2009s.
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal05.html
Where the 2009 8 DIMM / 8-cores can shine is not just more efficient processor, but also more bandwidth to memory, too, which if you think you need more horsepower, do you have hard drives and memory to do so?

  • Best Video Card for my MDD Dual 1.25 and Video Editing?

I know that this has been discussed several times before. I just never saw any real answers. I was planning to a little more intensive video editing so I got the Motion 2.1 Trial. Well, doens't allow me to install saying that my video card doesn't meet the specs. I'm confused, I read the requirements and read me files and my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro seems to meet the basic requirements. However, the About this Mac says that it doens't support Core Image.
I guess my question is what would be my best and least expensive video card upgrade? Or is mine set up incorrectly or something? I've read elsewhere that this card should work. I'm just a little confused why it doesn't support Core Image....I may go all the way to Final Cut...Will this card work with that application?
    Any info would be great.
    Thanks.
    Robert

Thanks and sorry for the confusion...I just realized
that mine is only a 64mb card. It's the stock that
came originally in the MDD dual 1.25 I believe. I
had no idea that the same model card can have
different amounts of memory. It still says that it's
the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro...just 64mb and no core image
    support
It sounds like you may be mistaken and have an Apple OEM ATI RADEON 9000 Pro. That had 64MB, was stock with the MDD, and does not support core image.
There was also an Apple OEM ATI RADEON 9700 Pro with 128MB available as a BTO option with the MDD Dual 1.42GHz. Sometimes they pop up on eBay, although they are sought-after because they support core image and have both an ACD and DVI connection allowing for two digitally-connected LCD flat-panel monitors.
To my knowledge there have only been 128MB and 256MB versions of the ATI RADEON 9800 Pro Mac Edition.

  • Which video card to get for my late 2005 Dual 2.0 G5

Sorry if this has been answered in others posts. I have been a bit confused on what card I should be getting for my G5.
I have a late 2005 model (last generation of the PPC) and it came with a 6600LE PCIe 128mb card.
I would like to get a better video card (256 or 512) but I don't want to break the bank. I read about the ATI x1900 but I wasn't sure what the differences were between the two versions. There seems to be an x1900 MAC edition and an x1900 XT. Can someone let me know which card I need and whether or not there are other choices that might be cheaper.
    Thanks.

I recently purchased an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac edition and installed it in a PowerMac G5 2.0 DP to power a 30" Apple Display ... installed easily and worked perfectly. It was $186.98 at Amazon, but is currently unavailable there; $204.99 at Small Dog. Here is the detailed description:

  • G4 MDD Dual 1.25 - Aperture 2  - Do I need newer Video Card to run the app?

I am hoping someone can help steer me in the right direction. I spent all morning reading about Aperture 2, decided I must have it, downloaded the trial version and THEN found out my computer will not run it. When I try to install it, it says that I don't meet the minimum requirements but doesn't specify exactly what the problem is. The Aperture minimum requirements are confusing to me in that it says Power Mac G5 with Intel processor, BUT it says you can have a G4 Powerbook with a 1.25 GHz processor. My Powermac G4 has a 1.25 processor. Not sure if that is the problem or if it's my video card which is the standard ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. If I replace my video card will I be able to run Aperture 2? If so, which ones would be compatible with my older Mac? — Thanks, mark

Hi! Hopefully the answers ARE out there. I need to replace the video card that shipped with the machine because it does not support MOTION 2. (NVIDIA GeForce 4Ti 4600) I also need the replacement card to have an ADC port, something quite rare it seems, can anyone suggest a card that will work? If so where can I find it? • Video card resolution matched to 20inch ACD?

Hi all. I've been reading some of the great info here about video cards and cinema displays, but I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for yet, so, I apologize if I'm repeating what someone else may have already asked...
My business partner is looking at getting a 20" ACD next week. He's using a Dual 1.25 MDD. I'm not sure exactly what video card he has but I do know it's got 64 mb memory.
I was told earlier this year from my local Apple dealer that the card had to be capable of "matching the resolution of the monitor" in order for the monitor to work at it's optimum, keeping it's calibration etc.
Is there any truth to this? And, if so, what type of card should he consider if he's getting the new display? Or will his card drive the monitor fine? I'm sorry that I don't know exactly what card is in his machine, but I will try to find out tonight when I go over to do some editing with him.
Thanks for any kind of reply or guidence.

this is a pretty low-end chip bundled in some Macs, what you need to do is just go to the manufacturers web page (ATI, Nvidia, etc.) and plug in the chip name and model number and you get the specifications.
This chip tops out at resolutions of 2048x1536. That said you usually want a chip that can perform resolutions much higher than what you intend to run it at only for the reason that from a performance standpoint the highest end will usually have some performance/speed issue of one form or another. Running at a mid-range resolution means you normally won't encounter any performance issues or very mild ones.
