Dual g5 1.8 - 10.4.8 - 10 min. start-up, constant crashing in Finder.

Hello all,
Anytime I run an application, the Mac freezes up. No kernel panick, just normal slow-down. If i leave the computer for 10 minutes and come back, its completed the task assigned it, but I'm unable to do anything else.
-start-up takes 10 minutes, and the fans blare like crazy during
-mail.app won't start - period
-firefox crashes after 2 minutes
-all other applications launch, but fail to appear.
I can force quit everything if I wait long enough for the finder to load, but that just brings me back to what it looks like after boot.
Just this morning I was working on it with no problems! Help!

There's an application called Data Rescue, I haven't used it myself but I've seen good things about it.
Good luck, and please post back with results,
Miriam

    Hi there,
If you purchased FaceTime from the Mac App Store, the first thing that I would recommend is removing and reinstalling the application. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • G5 Dual, 2.7 Gb Processor, 4 Gb RAM, OSX 10.4.5 Crash

    Hi,
We have some trouble here with a G5 Dual which is crashing when rendering to a FireWire 350 Gb External Disk. When we use Final Cut Pro and render (using compressor) after a random amount of time the Cinema Screen shows a transparant gray screen with a Forced Dialog that I have to shut down the computer because there is a problem with Mac OSX. It also crashes when you copy a file from a DVD or CD.
Yesterday and today we did 4 hardware tests and nothing was found. Everything seems to be Ok. Also when the G5 starts-up we see a folder with a question mark. Solved that today by setting the startup disk in the preferences.

  • Dual PowerMac G4 or Core Duo Intel Mac Mini?

Right now I have a Intel Core Duo Mac mini. I have the following setup and specs on my desk. The mini contains the Duo 1.66GHz processor, 2GB DDR SDRam, 80GB hard drive, OS X & Windows XP, AirPort +Bluetooth, and so on. My problem is that I have always been a tower lover and that is why I purchased the Mac mini because I purchased a 20.1 widescreen HD Dell LCD with DVI-D, VGA, Component, and so on imputs. I wanted this for my Xbox 360 also.
Here is where it starts to get complicated. I also have four, yes four, external hard drives sitting on my desk, and I still need more hard disc space. I have a 250GB, 120GB, 250GB, and 60GB. Plus remember I have a 80GB in the mini. I am also looking into another 250GB or 500GB external hard drive.
Now before I had the mini, I had the original iMac G5 which had a 1.6GHz PowerPC G5 processor in it, 160GB hard drive, and 1.5GB of ram. It was showing age and I needed more speed and a bigger display so I ditched it for the Intel Mac mini.
In addition I am pulling 12 USB ports out the back of my Mac mini. I have a few hubs fulling almost all the ports. I need these for the external hard drives. If I go internal, I can probably live with 6-8 USB 2.0 ports. I will need at least 1 firewire or an iSight camera or my Sony HD handycam, but USB is more needed. In addition I see some PowerMac G4's came with Firewire 800? Is this something I would need, I currently however have no use for it.
But now I really see the need of a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver tower. I was looking into the Dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 models, and really don't know which is faster. I would obviously love the expandability of the PCI cards, and independed graphics memory, but am I willing to transition back to PowerPC after moving over the Intel?
I don't know so I am posting it all here in the PowerMac G4 section of the Apple forums. I really hope I can get some good advice here. By the way, I am very Apple and technology frantic, so I know the ins and outs of a tower and stuff like that. So a non Apple warrenty would probably not be a problem.
But one problem is, how much could I get for my Mini which cost me $1099 and how much would a decent G4 tower cost me? I have an extra Nvideo GeForce 4 MX 5400 Ultra with 64MB of ram and DVD-D/ VGA outputs, so that isn't a problem. Plus to replace the AirPort Extreme built into the mini, I have a AirLink 101 Super G (108MBPS) Wireless PCI card. Bluetooth can be added with a simple USB dongle.
UPDATE: Forgot the mention I already have a DVD Burner compatible with OS X and 3.5inch bays. I would like a Dual Layer, but if its a tower, I can upgrade that anytime.
UPDATE x2: I would also like to mention that I use Gigabit Ethernet so any PowerMac model I choose would have to acomidate that such as the Intel Mac mini does.
    THANKS EVERYONE!!!!
    Mac Mini 1.67GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB ram, 1.5TB storage, OS X v.10.4.6, 30GB iPo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would like one day to have a tower with 4-8 HD drives
(120-250GB each) and HD DVD and Blue-Ray burners.
Good luck Even the Dell towers we have at work have space for 3 HDs, and thats only of you give up one of the CD bays.
Honestly, I unless a blueray player ships in the CPU, I would get a PS3. 1/2 the cost of a standalone blu-ray player, and a game system too
Expected street prices from Sony and Toshiba web sites:
    standalone Sony blueray player: 995.
    Toshiba HD-DVD: 599
    Sony PS3 w/ bluray: 499/599
Is the reason the PowerPC G4 can't handle HD DVD is
processor speed or what? Cause there is always
processor upgrade cards up to 1.8GHz and 2.0GHz Dual.
    Thanks.
One of the Apple support pages says you must have a G5...
does not give the background behind it.
On a G4, the OS will not allow HDDVD playback (as HD is defined by FinalCutHD) via the DVD player, BUT it will play back HD video clips (like QT trailers)
On my 867, 720i clips played back w/o a problem, but 1080 would freeze for 20 seconds at a time, (while audio continued normally)
on my Dual 1.42, I have no problems with 1080.
I hesitate to consider or recommend processor upgrade cards b/c for some, the price approaches the cost of a new machine w/o the benefits of faster busses, etc, and, right on the side of the OS X box, it says processor upgrade cards not supported. I would hate to upgrade the OS to find it refused to support my machine.

  • Windows 7 and Arch linux dual boot problem

hey guys I had an issue with windows 7 dual booted with arch and i was just wondering my windows 7 crashed. I had Reinstalled windows OS and all my partitions are set up but now when I try to boot up arch I cant at all cause windows Boot took over and i have no way of getting into arch is there anyway i can fix this or maybe reinstall arch without loseing my home folder with all my data, or is there just and easyer way to fix this issue im stuck.  thank you all for your support as i am a noob

You need to re-install grub. When you reinstalled Windows it will overwrite grub preventing you booting Arch. You'll need to boot from a liveCD and chroot into your Arch installation. details for recovering grub are in the wiki - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … stallation

  • Receiving multiple files with dual extension using file adapter

    Hi,
The scenario where I am implementing requires multiple files of different names to be picked(ABC.txt) and dropped at destination(ABC.txt.pgp) up by my File Sender and Receiver adapters.  Any idea on about how the configuration for receiving multiple files with dual extension for receiver adapter is to be done?
Note:- currently, The scenario is working fine without dual extension. i.e Its picking all files which starts with ABC and creating at destination as it is. even I configured as ABC.txt.pgp, but its not creating the second extension.
    Thanks in Advance
    Manmadha

    Hi,
Try to concatenate '.pgp ' to the source file name to create the target file name for the receiver file adapter, by accessing the Adapter Specific Attributes using Java user defined function. This might work.

  • Dual HDMI

Can a Mac min 2012 support dual hdmi outputs via onboard HDMI port and mini display to HDMI adapter simultaneously in video mirroring or extended desktop mode?

Why not? Mini should be able to support output from
all ports simultaneously except for headphone jack/
internal speaker. What you do with the output shouldn't
affect the Mini (in the case of the adapter). Buy parts
on Amazon so you can return for any reason).

  • Apple TV and Dual zone receivers

I have the lasted ATV and hooked it up to the surround sound. It works great throughout the main room but turn on the dual zone or 2 source I get no sound. Now after research I find that the dual zone only plays analog and not digital. I know i need to buy a splitter or converter.  any recommendation. Also My question is how do I set it so I can still get digital out in main room and TV and then analog to 2nd source.

By default, the dual-band AirPorts provide two wireless networks with the same Network Name. In the 2.4 GHz band, 802.11b/g/n is supported, and in the the 5 GHz band, 802.11a/n is supported.
I believe the Apple TV can only operate in the 2.4 GHz band, as well as, the iPhone. However, the Apple TV is capable of 802.11n in that band, while the iPhone is limited to 802.11g.
Unfortunately, there isn't a radio mode option to separate the 2.4 GHz band between 802.11n from 802.11b/g wireless clients, so connecting the iPhone will degrade the overall bandwidth of the 2.4 GHz radio.

  • Which mac mini model supports dual monitors

    Hi there
I gather that at some point mac minis started to support dual monitors natively.
Would anyone be able to clear up which model this was?
    Cheers

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    October 20, 2009 to June 14, 2010 Mac Minis supported mini-DisplayPort & and mini-DVI.
    June 15, 2010 and later supported mini-DisplayPort & HDMI.

  • [S] Latest Xorg crashes on dual head system when web browser is opened

Due to the long Subject line I abbreviated, the issue is solved but I would still like it if someone could answer my question if someone knows why
After updating Xorg and the Radeon drivers on my dual head system opening any kind of web browser causes Xorg to crash.  Any other application: Dolphin, Kopete, Amarok, urxvt open and run just fine with no issues from Xorg (which is baffling me).  I have a bunch of single head systems that use ATI video cards that don't have this issue, like the one I am currently on that has Chrome open with four tabs.
I caused a couple of these crashes and grabbed /var/log/Xorg.0.log, can be viewed from here http://sprunge.us/bNZC, as well as grabbed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf file, which is here http://sprunge.us/gbNW.  SLiMs log file has a little bit more in it as far as errors go, http://sprunge.us/UjVK, mostly how it is trying to load VDPAU which if I remember correctly that is a Nvidia thing is it not?  There are also errors how it can't load the RANDR extension.  Anyone have any helpful pointers of solving this?
    Package details:
    xorg-server: 1.12.0-1
    xorg-xinit: 1.3.2
    xorg-utils: 7.6-8
    xorg-server-utils: 7.6-3
    xf86-video-ati: 6.14.3-2

It seams that my 10-monitor.conf file was causing the issue, why I am not sure... and it would be nice to know what the problem with it was, but after moving that file out of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory and restarting X11 and using xrandr to get my screens setup the way I like them to be X11 no longer crashes when a web browser is opened.  I wonder if this will also solve my issue of Awesome randomly crashing after long periods of inactivity...

  • Seeking a clear description of getting dual monitors to work

I've spent a long while researching the issue of getting dual monitors to work on a new mac mini - which I will be purchasing as soon as I figure this one out! But I am bamboozled by references to the various types of connections and ports. If anyone has the patience to explain this really simply and clearly, I'd be very grateful.
Interestingly, the Apple guy on the phone today told me it isn't possible - it's either/or for the display connections. But clearly it IS possible, because there is so much discussion about it here...
Here's where I confess my technical limitations, and say that I am confused about what I need (to purchase, presumably) to get my two existing monitors to work with the new mini.
They are presently connected to my PC (soon to be ceremonially consigned... etc) with cables which have regular D-sub connectors at each end. This means they are vga, right? There is no digital connector on either monitor.
So I am trying to figure out
    a) is it possible to use these two monitors in a dual display setup with a mac mini? If so:
    b) How?! And then;
    c) what leads and/or connectors do I need to buy in order to connect them up?
Thanks for being here, I hope for some patient guidance.
    Jeff

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
An '09 Mac mini has two video out pots on the rear; a mini-DVI port and a mini-DisplayPort. The Mac mini comes with a mini-DVI to DVI-D adapter. If you use what came in the box with the mini, you need a DVI-D to VGA cable to connect one of your monitors. Otherwise you need a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA to VGA cable for one monitor. For the other monitor you need a mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter and a VGA to VGA cable.

  • 5770  +dual display + mac pro 1,1 = broken

I recently installed a 5770 in my mac pro 1,1 , using dual 22" displays, one through DVI, one through mini display port and it works fine with 10.6.4 + SL graphics update. I then installed 10.6.5 (also have tried 10.6.6) and i lose the monitor plugged into the mini display port. All the hardware is fine cause it still finds it in bootcamp and if i boot off an external with 10.6.4 + SL graphics. 10.6.6 still detects the second display, it shows up in system profiler and shows in the display top icon, but the screen wont come off standby.... HELP ME!!!!!!

I have an extra ATI X1900 XT that I've kept for my Mac Pro 1,1 - just in case my existing card ever failed, but it hasn't, and probably won't. Plus I've got a Mac Pro 3,1 that until last week I had never taken it out of the box.
I despise the mini display port, and I feel your pain.
The ATI X1900 XT has been a great card for my Mac Pro, but instead of me keeping it in a box in case of an emergency, I'd rather see it get used by someone else who needs it. Actually listed it for sale last week on ebay. Shocked there were no bidders. Reasonably priced of course.
Before I listed it for sale on ebay, I recorded a screen capture video and posted it on youtube as a example demonstration of it working on my computer.

  • Please help with these dual monitor problem

    Ok,
Well i am a final cut pro editor and i have a power mac g5 with 1.6 ghz.Its an older one but it runs great for what i need done. Anyway i wanted to go dual monitors so i went out bought a monitor and set it in place. However my graphics card only had 1 DVI PORT (Which had my main monitor on) and the other one was a ADC port. I bought a ADC to DVI-D and then realized it was the wrong one. Those Adaptors are very hard to fine, so i made up my mind a decided to forget that and get another graphics card. However i am not very good with that stuff and i really dont know which one to buy. Some others gave me a list but they were not the same as mine (slots didnt match)
*Here is my card that i have now*
    http://www.layton-family.net/stuff/stuff_files/image008.jpg
Can someone point me in the right direction about going to best buy and picking up a new one that will hold dual monitors and still run motion at a good level.
    Thannks

If you could find a real ADC to DVI-I adapter, it would work, but the Dr. Botts ADC to DVI adapter
    <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Dr%2E%20Bott/ADCDVII/>
will not work with a DVI to VGA adapter. It does have a dual-link DVI-I connector, but the pins for analog video (and dual link) do not connect to anything. They use this connector because some non-Apple digital displays come with DVI-I and/or dual-link DVI plugs, when they only need DVI-D signals. The Dr; Botts adapter and (all others that I have seen) are only ADC to DVI-D. Even if they connect the dual-link pins from the ADC to the DVI connector, the result will be single-link DVI-D, since no ADC cards provide dual-link signals. There is no reason (other than cost) why an adapter couldn't connect the analog video signals from ADC to a DVI-I connector, but I don't know of any that do.
    From their web-page:
"DVI Extractor II makes an ADC-compatible display out of virtually any third-party flat panel display"
    Note they say "flat panel".
You need an ADC to VGA adapter. They are listed from $40 to $150. Still less than a compatible replacement graphics card, although you can get a card faster than you current one, if you pay enough.

  • Will moving a dual 1.25 processor to a single 1.25 motherboard work?

I have a dual 1.25GHz MDD but suddenly it will not start. No lights and no fan at all. It's just dead.
I have replaced the power supply, but that did nothing. I am assuming that the motherboard is dead. I have a single processor 1.25GHz MDD that's working and noticed that the motherboards look identical.
My question is: Can I take the processor from the dual 1.25 and put it on the motherboard of the single processor machine? I guess, my concern is, do both machines use identical motherboards. If so, this should not be a problem, but before I do anything I want to find out for sure.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have the same issue, a suspect MDD2003 G4 MB. My wife yanked the ethernet port from the motherboard when she unknowingly tugged at the cable. The part number is 820-1476-A which is the same as the part number I see available for DP 867 units from before 2003 in several eBay auctions. Does anyone know if the 820-1476-A logic board is the 167MHz bus version? I have a secondhand DP 1.25MHz G4 I want to install but I am getting only power light and fan, no drive or chime on boot with my suspect 820-1476-A logic board...
