Dual G5 1.8 GHz screen/keyboard freezes (new with 10.4.6)

Three times in the past month the screen and keyboard on my dual 1.8 GHz G5 (first generation) have "frozen" as I closed windows or Command-tabbed between running applications.
When the screen and keyboard are frozen, the menubar clock does not increment, but I can still move the cursor across the screen with the mouse. The machine itself is not frozen. I can log into it as a server from my MacBook Pro, read files from its hard drives and write files to its hard drives, but I cannot do anything from the machine's own keyboard. If I press the "sleep" LED on my Apple LCD display, the LED dims but doesn't extinguish, and the machine doesn't sleep. If I hold down that LED on the monitor, the machine will power off. On reboot, the recovered files folder in the trash holds six files whose names all start with "dftmp" (five of the six are named dftmpGELNNHAM with some subsequent lower case k and other characters, the sixth dftmpCPEMKHAM, also followed by a string of k and other lower case characters. The Recovered Files folder in the trash also contains a SENDMAIL folder, which is empty.
One diagnostic suggestion I received was to open Activity Monitor and the Console to see if anything unusual occurred (spikes in processor usage or RAM usage, for example). I have the logs, and just a few minutes ago another freeze occurred (the console's display and the Activity Monitor display freeze along with everything else). I'm not capable of interpreting the logs.
Rebooting after this most recent freeze, the CPU usage bar graph now shows the two processors alternating in rhythmic spikes of CPU usage by System (from a low of 5% to a high of more than 30%, the spikes being about 18 seconds apart per processor (so total System CPU usage peaks at 30% or thereabouts every 9 seconds). My sense is that this is not normal, and my MacBook Pro certainly doesn't do this. At the moment, the only things I'm doing on the machine are typing this message, downloading in Thoth, and watching the logs and Activity Monitor.
Is anyone interested in looking at my console logs? Is there someone else I should report this to? It's not something I can show to my local Genius, because this has happened only 3 times in a month. On each occasion, the freeze occurred when I was closing windows or changing focus from one window to another, but I cannot reproduce the freeze at will.
Thanks so much,

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption and see if that helps.

  • Keyboard freezes when typing on iPad.

is  anyone else experiencing the screen keyboard freezing when typing a Google search or on an Internet blog?

To things that seem to have helped folks with this problem is a reset of all settings followed by a reset of the device.
    1. Use the Settings app to reset all settings.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    2. Reset your device like this. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.
    Hopefully that fixes your problem.

  • On-Screen Keyboard at the Login Window

    Good morning,
We're looking at deploying a number of Mac Mini machines linked up to touchscreens for "Kiosks" where users have access to a web browser for email, but not much else.
Once logged in, the On-Screen Keyboard works very well, and we can make sure it's running all the time, however we can't get it to run over the Login Window, so the machine still requires a Keyboard and Mouse.
Does anyone know how we can get this application to run over the Login Window? I've tried getting launchd to spawn it but for some reason it gives the error that the application can't be found:
    11/06/2010 09:47:24 com.apple.launchd[1] (On-Screen Keyboard[815]) posix_spawn("/System/Library/Input\ Methods/KeyboardViewer.app", ...): No such file or directory
    11/06/2010 09:47:24 com.apple.launchd[1] (On-Screen Keyboard[815]) Exited with exit code: 1
    wierd..
Anyway, the application has a CodeSignature section, so I can't see the loginwindow disliking it. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

It's possible but the on-screen keyboard should support some pre-login limitations. Mac OS X 10.5 introduced the ability to run a launchd agent while the login screen is showing. Pre-login launchd agents are privileged programs; you must be carefully to maintain system security. For example, Typical On-Screen Keyboard for Mac OS X ( http://www.typicsoft.com/en/Products/On-Screen-Keyboard.html ) and Typical Virtual Keyboard for Mac OS X ( http://www.typicsoft.com/en/Products/Virtual-Keyboard.html ) both support the login screen. They are for Intel only. You can download it from http://www.typicsoft.com

  • Win2008r2 RDS farm with "Remote Session Environment" set, Need on screen keyboard as well.

I have an RDS farm with select users running an app for their session, I use the following GPO:
    http://i.imgur.com/DaKpW76.jpg
This works great, however, I also want an on screen keyboard to load with it as well... This setting disables most login scripts I have tried.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Sorry to disappoint you, but as per my research there is no any default path to set for all users to display on-screen keyboard. You need to start manually or need to develop some script to start on logon. For developing any script or program, I suggest you
    to contact our MSDN forum.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Keyboard and screen scrolling freezing up after software update approx. 30 days ago.

2 year old 16GB IPad (Model MD522LL/A) Recently (last 30 days) installed recommended software update (sorry do not recall number of update). Now having problem with keyboard freezing when messaging as well as screen freezing when scrolling. Can sometimes be temporarily resolved by rebooting (turning off, waiting 3 to 5 minutes and restarting).
    Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks for that, I did go looking for it but couldn't find it.
Unfortunately, resetting the PRAM and NVRAM didn't work. Will a reinstallation of OS X make a difference, bearing in mind I've already restored from a Time Machine backup? (I don't know if those clone everything or don't include system files).

  • [SOLVED] Laptop keyboard freezes randomly.

I have Arch dual booted with Windows 8.1 on an Asus K53SM laptop.
    Laptop specs are:
    * Intel i5 2nd Gen @ 2.5 GHz
    * 8GB RAM
    * 750 GB Hard disk
    * nvidia GT630M 2GB
Right after installing Arch, I installed GNOME as the DE and everything was working fine. Recently, I uninstalled GNOME and installed KDE. I'm experiencing random keyboard freezes. I've tested it with a USB keyboard, so it is not a hardware issue I guess.
    * The [<Super> + S] combination to display all workspaces works fine.
    * So does the <Alt> + F2, to write commands, but the keys don't work (so can't type anything there).
These freezes are totally random, and the keyboard works fine after 1-2 minutes. Here is the output for Xorg.0.log ->

Please help me to resolve this.
    Last edited by vortex_ape (2015-02-22 14:39:47)

I haven't been experiencing the issue for some hours.
The issue occurred more frequently when I was compiling something. When I tried to reproduce the issue, it didn't occur.
The interesting thing to note is that I updated the system twice in the past 2 days. I checked the pacman log and saw that xorg-server-common, xorg-server, xorg-server-devel were among the upgraded packages. I guess they were causing the problem.
I'll need to test for a couple of days though before I consider the issue to be resolved. I'll update if the issue persists.

  • On screen Keyboard stuck under menu bar

On one of my GB songs when I select window> Keyboard, to get the onscreen keyboard to show, half of it is running off the top of my screen under the menu bar. I cannot click and drag it down so I can use it. It allows me to stretch it to the right but I cant click on a part of it that allows me to move it/re-position it on screen. The position it is in now will not allow me to use it.
    Help Please.
    Paul

Hey thanks a lot! It was very nice of you. I have noticed that you help a lot of people with GB in these forums. Every time I search these forums I see your name helping out someone. You should be commended:)
Back to the topic at hand, After reading your post I tried something and it worked. What was happening is when I recorded or worked on something on my 17" MacBook Pro and then brought it over to my G5 with regular (non widescreen format) dual displays it was forcing the keyboard off the screen. So I tried opening the file on the MBP and moved the keyboard way down to the bottom, saved, moved the file to the G5, and when I opened it the keyboard was in the middle. Problem solved.
You learn something new everyday. And I am sure this will happen to someone else and hopefully they will search these forums and find this post for a solution.
    Thanks Again,
    Paul

  • Mac Pro 2.66 ghz Quad Xeon Freezing when I use any software

Can Anyone Help me, I have a serious freezing issue with My Mac Pro, Everytime I use any software it just Freezes on my ie IDVD, I tried Instaling a new OS System, and repalaced a new Hardrive but with no joy, I'm Guessing its the graphic card now but I dont want to waste anymore money until I'm sure.
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 SDRAM used to give me dual screen display until the right side failed so now I'm only using one screen, also everytime I'm displaying a video their are thin random lines and a bit of screen display distortions before it eventually freezes on me.
    Please Help

Mac Pro 1,1 (all Mac Pro models come with Xeon).
What matters is cleaning the X1900 of dust and from clogging intake and exhaust - every three months.
Run Apple Hardware Test from your OEM DVD.
Install SmcFanControl 2.x and keep the fans rpm to 800-900 instead of 499-599 base as minimum at least.
Monitor temperatures with Hardware Monitor or similar.
Have you been looking to see in System Profile: Memory if there are any errors?
Normally, clone backup update weekly and running Disk Warrior at the same time should be done to spot disk directory and file system problems before they get worse. Or any time your system freezes.
Freeze... and what you have 90% of the time is a corrupt directory and other errors.
At which time you may need to restore if you can't fix the problem. And don't rely on only Apple DU First Aid to find and repairs any and all errors.
For Snow Leopard maybe a flashed ATI 4870 to replace the X1900.
You may need to start over from scratch to get things stable once you find what is happening, and work with a test system until then with some trial and error. Format/initialize and clean install of 10.6.x for the OEM 10.4.7+.
At nearly 4 yrs now since it came out, not sure if you have plans for a new one.

  • Firefox crashes as soon as I type into it (anywhere: search bars, pages) unless I have the on-screen keyboard open ..??

When I start a Firefox session, everything works normally until I try to type anything anywhere (the address bar, either of my search bars, or on a webpage). If I try to type it freezes up and I have to go to the Task Manager to quit it (I have Windows obviously and use Firefox 3.6).
I tried opening the on-screen keyboard, just to see what happens, and as long as I have that open, even downsized, everything works fine and I can type wherever I want.
Is this a keyboard problem or something else?? Plugins?

Yeah, it still locks up. I just realized that it happens in Word, IE and other programs as well. It is obviously a problem with my keyboard/display drivers and not any one program (I think it is happening after my computer is in "sleep" or "hibernate" and not general start up). I guess I assumed it was a Firefox problem since the I noticed the problem while using it.
    Thanks though!!

  • IPhone 6 - keyboard freezes in landscape

I searched and found lots of old keyboard talk, but nothing answering this.
Upgraded to iPhone 6. The keyboard works perfectly when holding the phone in normal use position (portrait).  But when I rotate the phone to lanscape position, it usually just freezes. Keyboard appears but nothing happens when you press keys. Rotate back to portrait, works fine.  Every once in a while, but rarely, the keyboard will work in landscape.  I've tried installing two third party keyboards, same issue with them.  I've tried hard reset, no fix. It did this with original software and continues after 8.0.2 install.
I haven't seen anyone else talk about this problem. Is it just me?  Anyone have ideas on a fix?

Do you have a specific app that might cause it to go funny, try un-syncing apps then see if it sires it, if it does bring them back one by one. i had a similar issue with an app that caused screen to lock out.

  • Screen Share - Freeze when changing accounts

When I try to change change to another account on the iMac via Screen Share, Screen Share freezes. In fact, this happens when trying to log in to another account--it does not show the log in screen.
If I Quit Screen Share and then open back up, I can then see the other account or the log in screen.
    All advice appreciated.

    Ok found the problem.
As said before brand new device, when installing I choose to restore an iCloud back-up form my previous iPhone4.
Somehow, and I surely do not understand why! My new 5S not only had all my keyboards as it should because of the recovery, it also had the German keyboard? Which is not part of the recovery!
    Deleted the keyboard, problem solved.
It still is very strange I only had the German on "some" screens not all.

  • Black screen - Keyboard illuminated - unresponsive

I'm on a macbook pro 15" 2.66 Core i7. About once a day my laptop freezes resulting in the following symptoms:
    100% black screen
Keyboard Illuminated and unresponsive (for instance caps lock won't light up when pressed)
No mouse arrow or any graphical output.
This seems to happen randomly. I've been typing emails when it happened. I've simply returned to it after making tea and it's frozen. I've been working in Photoshop etc. Basically whether I have 10 or 1 application running it randomly occurs. I've had it happen with the power connected and with the power disconnected.
Closing the lid makes no difference. The power light remain illuminated and doesn't enter the "breathing" mode.
    Things to note:
I never ever have a mouse connected.
Heres a console output at the time of the crash (you can see the time before and after)»

I brought it into the Genius Bar but no diagnosis, and I know they wanted to wipe my machine so I opted out for the moment. Basically they couldn't find anything either hardware or software.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Cheers.

So I'm pretty much sure what was causing this for me. I had a twitter feed app installed called Tweetie. I've since removed this app and I have had no / zero black screens since then.
    Here's my theory:
It runs constantly. And perhaps causes issues as your mac tries to wake the screen after going into energy saver mode. Maybe if you get a tweet just as your mac wakes up it cause the wake function to crash.
So if you are getting the black screen and have tweetie installed. Remove it and see if it solves your problems.

  • Why does my mouse and keyboard freeze periodically?

I have a Macbook Pro that I bought at the end of last July. It's been working perfectly until just recently.
For whatever reason, periodically the screen will freeze. I can't move the mouse, and I can't type anything on the screen. It typically unfreezes anywhere between 15-45 seconds later. Things like movies or songs playing don't freeze when this happens, only the keyboard and mouse. Once it unfreezes, it's perfectly fine.
Is there any reason it would be doing this?

I just got my first bluetooth mouse and I've had problems with it disconnecting multiple times per day! I don't understand why! I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.2. I was using a Logitech wireless usb mouse but it would disconnect when teh computer went to sleep and I had to unplug the nano receiver and plug it back in every time for it to work again. So I decided to get a bluetooth mouse to see if I would have better luck with it. Well this is disconnecting a lot! It's so annoying! My new mouse is a gigabyte M7700B notebook bluetooth wireless mouse. There is no software from gigabyte to use with this mouse. It's paired properly.
What can I do to remedy this situation? The only problems I can find online for a bluetooth mouse disconnecting is with the Apple bluetooth mouse. I don't have that so it isn't helping me.
Is this just a problem with the bluetooth in Mac's?? It's been a problem for years as far as I can tell. My mac is relatively new. Help!

  • Keyboard freezes in msg app

    Hi
When typing an sms msg sometimes the keyboard 'freezes' for a couple of seconds. If I keep typing there is no indication of anything happening but after about 10 seconds all the letters I pressed suddenly appear on screen. I tried a back-up and restore, a reset and turning the ph off with the home and off buttons but still no good.
The keypad in the other apps,(mail etc) are OK, it's only the messages app
    Thanks
    Geoff

power cycle, reset all settings, if still having problems import photos, transfer purchases, sync contacts calendars and notes. then restore as new. if problem persists get replacement at apple store or call in for mail in repair
