Dual G5 Powermac - CPU chirp/whine after 10.4 upgrade
At home, I have a Dual G5 1.8 GHz Power Mac. At work, I use a Dual-G5 2.0 GHz power mac.
With both of these machines, after upgrading to 10.4, I can hear the machine making high-pitched noises. The Dual-1.8 GHz machine `chirps', while the Dual-2.0 Ghz machine emits a loud, steady, high-pitched `whine'.
Neither of these machines displayed this behavior when running Mac OS 10.3.x.
The only workaround I've found is to use the Processor Control Panel (Part of the CHUD developer tools) and do either of the following:
1) Turn off the second cpu via the processor control panel
2) Disable "allow nap" via the processor control panel
Both succeed in stopping the chirp/whine, but I've been using option (2). The only disadvantage is that "allow nap" is always re-enabled after a reboot. The setting doesn't stick.
The chirp/whine occurs if the Processor Control panel isn't installed.
Has anyone experienced something similar to this? Is there a better fix than the processor control panel?
Many thanks in Advance!
PowerMac G5 - Dual 1.8 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Hi, Steve. Welcome to the Discussions.
I have a PM G5 Dual 2.3 GHz and have no such issues after installing 10.4.7. While I've installed the Xcode tools, I elected not to install the CHUD tools.
Some ideas for you:
1. See "Power Mac G5: I hear buzzes, beeps, or humming" to see if the sound samples therein match what you're hearing.
2. Check the SMART diagnostics for the hard drives on both machines, esp. the 2x1.8 that "chirps" as some hard drives make such a noise to indicate they are failing.
3. Run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that came with each machine. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the AHT in troubleshooting.
4. Search or post on the appropriate PM G5 Discussions to see if other users have had similar experiences.
Good luck!

Dual 1Ghz PowerMac G4 gray screen after booting
Greetings
Please can someone give me some more ideas to try, my G4 dual 1Gz system boots in to the operating system fine but after a while I get the gray screen crash, can be quick can be a while. I've reinstalled the operating system after formatting the HHD, I've done the disk utility repairs, I've swapped out the video card and the ram and its still doing it.
Any further ideas would be appreciated.
Rgds
JamesSounds like it's going out.
I would try running the extended version of your Apple Hardware Test.
It's not perfect but may flag something.

CPU runs hot after Snow Leopard upgrade
I upgraded to SL last weekend and noticed the next day that the fans were constantly running really loud. After extensive research (there are some other threads about this, but no solutions) and troublshooting, here's what I've learned:
- It's not related to Spotlight indexing, as the problem continues after indexing is complete
- PMC and PRAM resets don't fix the problem
- Activity Monitor shows a process in the root called "ptmd" (platform thermal monitor daemon) consuming over half of my CPU. Killing the process resolves the issue, and the system still seems stable, but I don't know what it is, why it's running, and if it's really ok to kill it. I've read that some computers run it at startup and then automatically kill it, and others constantly run it. But I don't know which category my computer falls under. Either way, I've never had to kill it before upgrading to 10.6 and shouldn't have to kill it after every restart now.
- iStat shows my CPU getting to around 80°C+, and my fan running at 6000rpm+. Once I kill ptmd, the CPU temp will gradually drop below 50°C and the fan drops to under 2K rpm.
I don't remember if the problem started right after the upgrade or only after running software updates in Snow Leopard... But I started fresh -- I erased my HD and installed SL fresh. No problem until I ran the 10.6.3 combo software update, then the ptmd problem came back. I've since done another fresh install and am doing a step-by-step software update. I have 10.6.1 installed with no trouble, even after a restart. I'm currently downloading 10.6.2, which I expect will introduce the issue again, based on the fact that that's where people started having problems in the forums that I've read. I suppose I could just find the most recent "safe" version (probably 10.6.1) and stick with that one, but I would like to make sure that the other important updates are installed. Has anyone else heard of this? Is there anything else I can try?
A secondary concern is that I only ran a Time Machine backup after installing 10.6.3 (I know, stupid to not backup before the upgrade). If I restore my backup with Migration Assistant, am I going to just re-introduce the problem on my computer?According to the man page for ptmd, the ptmd daemon "relays to hardware any OS notifications effecting thermal conditions." IOW, it is just the messenger sending messages from the OS to the hardware. If it is using a lot of CPU time, the OS apparently very frequently thinks thermal conditions are changing & that the hardware should know about it. Thus, high ptmd activity would seem more a symptom than a cause.
Also, while my MacBook is a 4,1 model & not a 2,1 one like yours, the ptmd process terminates after startup, so assuming they are sufficiently similar in terms of thermal management it may be that whatever is failing to tell the process on your MB to terminate after startup is part of the culprit.
This is unlikely anything in 10.6.3 -- on all my Macs, the modification date of the /usr/libexec/ptmd file suggests that it has not been changed since 10.6.2. In fact, it is unlikely anything in any Snow Leopard update, since most users do not have this problem, regardless of model or 10.6 version.
I realize you said you did a fresh install & the problem disappeared, but for this kind of test to be definitive, you cannot allow any preexisting file that might have an adverse effect on system operation to remain active. Unfortunately, there are many types of files that can do this. Sometimes these files affect nothing besides the update process itself, making it seem as if the update is the cause when it actually is an effect.
Since there are so many kinds of files that can have adverse effects, it can be difficult to identify the offending one without first doing some diagnostic detective work to determine where it might be lurking in your Mac. A good way to start is to start up in Safe Mode, which loads only essential system components (see Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? for more about this). If the Mac doesn't heat up in Safe Mode, then you know one of the non-essential items is the cause.
You can determine if the problem file is in the user or system domain by creating a new, temporary user account. If automatic login is enabled, temporarily disable it -- it is important for this test that you log into this account for the first time immediately after restarting the Mac, before logging into any other account. If the Mac doesn't overheat now, then you know the problem is somewhere in the normal user account's home folder.
If you are willing, try these tests & let us know your results. That will make it much easier to suggest where the offending file might be & what to do about it. -
G5 Dual 2.5 CPU Power PC will not boot unless I remove the Plastic Sheild.
G5 Dual 2.5 CPU with 4 gb of memory will boot everytime if I take the plastic sheild out. I bought it from a guy who would turn it on then let it sit until the fans revved up after about 5 to ten minutes. I figured out that it would boot everytime if I removed the plastic sheild. Now I am trying to find a permanent fix for this issue.
Thanks for any assistance anyone can give.I don't think its just a plastic shield and door - there is a contact switch that signals when these are removed and the fans rev up to a higher speed. My guess is its the higher speed of the fans that's keeping things cool during the power surge of the boot stage thats allowing it to startup.
When the doors are on and the fans are kept low there must be some hardware failure that is occurring during boot up - that seems to be prevented when speeding the fans up. And after the initial boot up power surge, things run cool enough that I can safely put the plastic shield and door back on and the computer keeps running fine (it ran OK all night).
I can think of no other logical explanation at this time.
Any other ideas?
What puzzles me, is I use this computer to do some heavy 3D graphic renders and have run it intensely for days at at time with absolutely no sign of failure during operation once its booted up. I've never had a freeze or anything like that. So when its so reliable during operation, why so fragile during boot up? -
G5 Dual Core Powermac says no card detected
Hi All
It's been a frustrating day - first off I carted my mac 30 miles to an Apple Centre and waited for a long time whilst they installed an Airport Extreme Card with Bluetooth into My brand new G5 2Ghz Powermac (Dual Core).
Got the machine home and it turns out that they re installed the RAM incorrectly and after half an hour or so I sorted that.
I turn on the machine and try to detect the Airport Card and it says "no card is installed' The card is installed but it just doesn't work.
I can't get back to the store until next week and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what may be wrong. It looks like the antenna is connected and everything seems secure.
Help anyone please. You might want to read the thread Airport Card & the new Dual Core Powermac's.

MDD dual 1.25 CPU DEAD- WHICH MOTHERBOARDS had COMPATIBLE CPU's?
I've just finished (after much help from Japamac, Grant Bennet and others) diagnosing what's wrong with my MDD.
*FRIED CPU.*
My Logic board is marked 820-1476-A. I found a good used dual 1.25 CPU pulled from a MDD motherboard that's labelled (the motherboard is labelled) 820-1472-A.
ANYONE know if the motherboards are compatible, i.e. if a cpu pulled from that motherboard will run on my motherboard?
If noone knows, any ideas where I could find that info?
From my research so far, some MDD motherboards with nearly similar numbers CAN interchange CPU's, others cannot.
ANY help appreciated, especially now that I've got the issue isolated.
Tommddthing wrote:
Have you isolated why the processors fried in the first place?
If its heat I would advise the dual 1.42GHz heatsink and using arctic silver paste...
Ah yes... the question of the millennium. What caused the first snowflake to fall...
The fans are all fine.
Here's the sequence of events:
I was experiencing a series of system corruptions & freezes forcing me to do hard shutdowns when this happened.
The only way to shut down a GUI freeze that I know of is to hard shut down (not good).
The day the full cascade happened, I'd just finished my *8th or 9th hard shutdown.*
I was trying to reboot from another partition on another disk that wasn't corrupted & repair the startup volume.
+*That's when I got a steady pitched tone upon restart. I had no idea what it meant.*+
+*After two more freezes the computer wouldn't startup at all.*+
My insurance would pay only IF I took it to a tech center, and they said "bad power supply, get another computer. It's not worth it."
I did end up get a used G5 but began to attempt a repair... I NEED a MDD for my music interface cards, circa 2000, which after my G5 purchase discovered that none of the cards work. That's my entire music interface; A MOTU 1208 with a 5 volt PCI card required to use it, and and "ADAT edit" card (same era).
The new G4 PSU (and a new power switch) got something happening, but I discovered that one of 2 seagate drives in the "front" cage was dead (only 1 year old).
Long story short, seagate sent me a new drive and, in researching the problem, I learned (*from seagate*) that their PATA barracuda drives run *really really hot.* I had TWO in the front cage, and two "pre-seagate" maxtor drives in the rear "wall cage".
*My estimation is that it WAS a heat problem, in one way or another that caused everything.*
I do music and drive the system pretty hard. There was thermal compound on the processors, but I wasn't the original owner, so I also have no idea if it was applied sufficiently, or how the computer was treated before I got it.
My concern is that the motherboard may have taken a hit as well, since when I first examined the CPU I didn't see the "black dot" I saw after attempting a startup with the new PSU. It *did start once, ran for 5 minutes and that's when I think the CPU shorted.*
Although (with the new PSU), even after that, all the fans run and the red light comes on, just no startup chime. Other than that I have no test equipment. Also running out of money.
I'm probably going to try and get a new processor I saw ($114), use only ONE drive in the front cage, get some ice goop, and hope the motherboard survived. Simply can't swing $250 for a used MDD, so I'm trying the processor swap... first.
I'm also going to find a way to install another small fan in the front cage blowing directly at the heat sink, and cross my fingers... *if I get that far*.
The fans always cycled up and down when needed, so the system WAS recognizing heat conditions.
I'm also thinking of drilling open the "cheese grater fake-holes" and setting the tower up off the floor for better air flow in general.
The heat sinks all seem to have totally different attachment methods.
Mine has 5 screws and uses a Rube Goldberg wiggy looking flange on the front.
+*I didn't know you could swap for the "copper tube" heat sink. I assumed the the 1.47 motherboard had different attachment points.*+
+*This is news to me. CAN I?*+
My sense is that something in the original "cascade failure" caused one of the 2 processors to fail. But I'm just guessing. Can't be sure until I replace it.
+*...God I love being broke...*+ -
Any one with experience on a dual G5 powermac?
My two month old macbook needed a reformat! Anyone with a dual G5 powermac to report on? Will I need to do a clean install again!
orthobiker wrote:
I recommend a clean install. I did an upgrade and it crashed my system. Had to do a clean install of tiger. I am sticking with tiger until a few more updates on leopard come out.
The problem with the updates is that you have to get Leopard running in order to install them.
Apple should immediately release a test program that runs on TIger and evaluates the machine and makes recommendations prior to a Leopard install. Microsoft did this a few times, releasing a CD that tested the system prior to a major upgrade.
The Apple test software could even "pre-fix" any potential install problems by installing the Leopard patches so that they would run during an install.
That's what I would do. Then, I am only a programmer, so what do I know? -
Good news for Winchester users and CPU temp. reading after S3 suspend
Bios 3.95 seems to solve all my previous problem with CPU temperature readings after S3 suspend state.
Now the temperatures are after S3 the same as before (15 degree C lower). So Speedfan's control of fans is more precise now. My CPU fan is stopped all the time, in case of warning temperature 50 deg.C, all fans go on 100% (including CPU). With this BIOS I am for the first time fully satisfied with this board.
Cool'n'Quiet is working and S3 as well. I haven't noticed any problem yet.Quote from: rocka on 27-December-05, 00:56:39
yo wabrooke, it's amazing u managed to swap out the bios chip from the HP computer set, I got mine same as well. Is that a tedious job? Can give me some guidelines to do it as well? if not, i guess i'm going to change back to dfi soon.
no, very simple. Just turn off your system, unplug the machine, use a paperclip or something similiar, pry the bios chip upwards and pull out (make note of which way the notch is facing), insert the replacement chip, viola! Now you have pretty much the MSI oem board. I think I've heard some boards are red or something (the MSI boxed boards), unless that was an older revision, but other than that, everything else is the same. The only main thing is, if you switch out the bios chips, you can no longer run the disc image to restore the hard drive, which isn't a biggie to me, since I purchased an OEM copy of Windows XP MCE, and I also have and run Windows XP Pro. -
Dual 1.25 CPU replacing a dual 1ghz
Hi!
Is there somebody who knows if I can replaced the dual 1Ghz CPU (MDD model) by a dual 1.25Ghz CPU (from an other computer that has a dead MDD computer motherboard).
Would it be a direct replacement ?

If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles. I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files. Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.

High CPU Usage On client application when upgrade remote SQL database
Hi,
Is anyone here encountered very high CPU usage after upgraded the database from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012? Following describes my issue.
I have my client application running on Windows 7 that access to central database (SQL 2005) on Windows server 2003 using ODBC connection, this client application basically query data and perform data insert and update. There are a number of this similar
clients connected to the database.
Due to slowness of the database server, company decided to upgrade the database server to SQL 2012 and also new hardware runing Windows Server 2012. There is no change on the client application and client hardware and the client application still using the
same ODBC connection to query, insert or update the new database server.
The problem I am now experiencing now is that my client PC where my client application running the CPU usage is very high almost hitting 100% when accessing to the central database. I am also noticed this program lsass.exe that utilized almost 40-50% of
the CPU time when client application accessing the central database.
Is anyone here know, why client PC CPU usage 100% when access to upgraded SQL 2012 database? What is lsass.exe program doing, it only appear when accessing to database server. How to reduce the CPU usage on client?
Thanks.
Chee Wee.Hello,
After upgrading, please rebuild indexes and update statistics on the databases.

I read a bunch of forums about this and tried some of the steps from a bunch of them.
Unistalled Mainstage completely with AppCleaner. Restarted the Mac. Redownloaded Mainstage from App Store. Restarted the Mac. Opened Mainstage...
Happy days.
It was really frustrating there for a couple of seconds!!! -
X-Windows fails after Every Major Upgrade: About to give up Archlinux
I have resigned myself to this behavior. I need to get Nvidia cuda toolkit working and after a major upgrade that effects X-windows I lose X.
Usually my fix is to reinstall nvidia drivers and cuda, sometimes successfully from aur but usually not. Well this time I'm stuck.
The proprietary driver won't work either, it wants kernel sources, but after installing them it still can't find them. Maybe they are there and I just need to supply some command line arguments, but I grow weary of this.
I just can no longer afford to waste hours and hours configuring low level BS to get my work done.
I'm going to step away from my console now and get some needed real work done. Does anyone want to talk me out of this? I'll probably blow away archlinux and replace it with ubuntu or maybe scientific linux if this persists.
I really wish Arch spent a little bit more time making sure that they would support drivers for the major vendors, e.g. AMD and Nvidia. Nvidia's cuda drivers really have problems with some of the latest stuff. Perhaps it's just a bad match and I should another distro. Not sure. Thoughts?ewaller wrote:
I don't use Nvidia, so I cannot share your pain. I can say that all OSes require some level of maintenance. Some require it continuously. Others less so. Some require little for long periods, followed by re-installs. It seems the more control you have, the more effort is required. Some are walled gardens, some are driven by marketing departments, some by ideology.
For me, Arch is the compromise I need. A great deal of control. Never a need to start over from scratch. It does what I want, and I don't have to compile it from scratch. Were it not for Arch, I'd still be with Gentoo (the penultimate disto, IMHO)
Regardless, it is your system. YMMV.
Yes I liked the control Arch gave me and I liked the fact they were the first to get the latest stuff. I fully understand that this has consequences. Nvidia has to maintain support for their windows and probably MAC drivers first. So they are always a distro rev or two behind in their linux support. I'm surprised there isn't more whining about Nvidia support. Maybe my configuration is a little odd, and it's just working for most, but my gpu, motherboard and cpu are fairly standard, though possibly dated by a year or two.
Well I'm going to give it one more try before punting. I'll do some reading on how to install nvidia drivers first and see if I can make any progress.
Thanks for the input.
