Dual G5 won't power on - power led lights on push only

Hi,
My 2Ghz Dual G5 doesn't turn on and I hoped someone could provide advice on repair.
When I push the power button the power led lights (once) but nothing else happens.
I have reset the pmu, replaced the internal battery and swapped RAM with known good.
I don't think my model has internal LEDs on the MB.
Would the power led still light if I have a bad power supply?
Is there any way I can tell if i have a bad motherboard rather than a bad power supply?
Thanks,
Tom

In the G5 manual, in the section on trouble-shooting, it says what one light blinking, two blinking, 3-blinking means.
I'd look it up for you right now but I'm at the libary, using their public computer, since my PowerPC G5 also died, at last, 4sure, last week. I had that light blinking three (3) times.
I've come to conclude it is a bad logic board that many other threads mention. Cost for repairs are very high.
I (seriously), without realizing it, went through some noted classic symptoms of "grief." -- First, there was Denial (i.e. Disbelief); then Anger; Then I tried last gasp measure to make a miracle happen, trying to "be reasonable and negotiate," a fix.
All repair people I contacted told me to buy something new. I "lnegotiated," some extended credit and creative bridge financing. (Um...can you spell: p-a-w-n shop....deliberately going into overdraft protection...whatever I had to do, etc.)
Today, I placed the order for a Mac mini, M239LL/A. ON EVERY SPECIFICATION it is better than my now dead PowerPC duel 2.3 G5 tower and cost one-third the price. Plus it has Bluetooth and Wi-fi.
The Black Friday Sales are soon approaching so this may be the best time to make the transition. It would have cost as much to ship and repair my G5 tower and not only do you get the latest version of iLife, Snow Leopard, but rebate deals that you can get when buying a new computer offered iWorks at half-price, discounts on other Apple software, and third-party software. I got a full $80.00 rebate on an HP F4480 all-in-one printer (that only cost $80.00...plus you get that free subscription to a Mac magazine and back on the cutting edge of computers instead of looking at other's ride the surf.
Ten days ago I was devestated. Today I am as excited and pleased as I was five years ago when I got the G5 tower.
EVERYBODY I talked to, at the library computer lab, friends, all nodded their heads sagely and said: "Yea, five years...that's about it for a computer."
It just took me ten days to 'go through the transition. It was strange that something so valuable suddenly was worth nothing; i.e. not even worth repairing.
I had 4.5GB of RAM. Never needed more. Now I'll have 4GBs of 150% faster ram, 14% faster CPU, the new apple age mainstream Intel chip, etc.
I was using two PCI-X slots...that's about the only thing I won't be restoring but their use was not necessary at all and PCI-X slots were almost out of date the day i got them and what I really wanted, a video graphic's card, didn't exist for PCI-X.
So...that was my experience with this unfortunately event -- the death of a good machine.
But I was very pleased to have 4.7 years of trouble free prime time computing and didn't really think about leapfrogging to the future and doing it again.
If my old G5 was still going I'd still be a-okay with it, but stuff was happening with software improvements that were for Intel only and that just, slowly at first, got more significant.
The death of my G5 was like a "wake up call!'

  • My iPhone 5c rear camera won't work and the led light doesn't work either

At first just snapchat wouldn't work and then I tried my actual camera and neither camera worked. I turned it off and on again and the front facing camera works but the rear facing one doesn't. Snapchat wont use either one. Then I pulled up my settings bar thingy and the led light button is all greyed out. I rebooted my phone and it did nothing. Im not sure what to do, help please!

Set it back to factory settings without using any backup data. If the camera does not work after that, you'll have to get the phone serviced.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
iPhone - Contact Support - Apple Support
If the camera works after that, use the latest backup to restore your data on the phone again. If the problem comes back, your backup contained damaged data, causing this problem and you'll have to start allover again, but without the backup data.

  • G5 won't boot.  White LED lights when power button is pushed, click heard.

Unlike some other non-booting G5 stories, mine never makes it past this stage. It's a dual 1.8ghz G5 powermac.
The white LED above the power button turns on when the power button is pressed, a click is heard, but it does not go any further. The LED does not flash at all... no grey screen, no hard-drive access, nada.
When I push the power button with the aluminum side removed (but with the transparent insert in place), I can see the fans twitch like they are going to start spinning, but then immediately stop.
I've tried resetting the PMU, replacing the PRAM(CMOS) battery, another identical type of video card, blowing out the dust with compressed air, removing and swapping memory, but always get this same result.
There was some renovation done in the house recently, but the machine was gently wrapped and moved away from the work. However after 2 weeks of sitting there, it now won't start.
Any help is appreciated. If the 'clicking' of the power supply is being heard (also clicks when I plug in the power cord), does that mean the power supply is likely working? In which case, is it likely a logic board issue?
One thing I noticed upon closer inspection, after removing the main fan, is that the higher processor seems darker than the lower one. Is there a way to remove one processor to test for hardware failure?

    Hi subculture,
A power supply is not to difficult to replace. The lower processor must be removed. It is much easier to lay the Mac on its side. A used power supply can be found on ebay. There are 2 main power connector that connect to the logic board. Those can be tested with a DC voltage meter against a pinout chart for your particular model and can be found on google.

  • MacBook won't charge on AC, MagSafe light dim & green only

    Hello all,
I'm hoping that someone might be able to help. My MacBook refuses to charge its battery! It sounds like a few people have similar problems.
The AC adaptor is NOT the problem - or at least, not the fundamental problem, since I just swapped mine for the known-good one from my sister's almost identical (and week-old) MacBook, and I get the same symptoms.
The symptoms are that the MacBook allows being powered from the AC adaptor, but in the battery menu bar item it simply says "Battery not charging". The AC adaptor's light is green, but extremely dim. It should be orange, since the battery is not full.
Sometimes it does charge, and I haven't been able to figure out why it does so at these times. Even then, the AC adaptor's light doesn't come fully on, staying dim and green while it's charging the machine.
I've reset the power management unit by pressing the power button while no battery or AC adaptor is connected, followed all the steps in Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters (Ts1713) including checking the MagSafe connector for dust and broken pins, reset the pins on the connectors, swapped the trailing cord on the AC adaptor, and restarted my MacBook many times!
I'm running 10.5.4, so I should have Battery Update 1.2 installed but I've never run it.
Also, if I take the battery out completely and run the MacBook just off the AC adaptor, the green light on the AC adaptor is still very dim. The system recognises that there's no battery but I don't get the strong green light that I should get.
Do I have a hardware problem, and if so is it with the battery or the MacBook?
I don't have another battery to test with right now and I can't get to an Apple dealer.
Below is the Apple System Profiler output for the Power section.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

  • HP ProBook 4530s orange blinking led, won't recognise the power cord

    Hello!
yestarday I tried to open my laptop but it didn't start. i thought that maybe the battery was empty so i plugged the power cord, but nothing happened.
then I noticed the led near the power cord blinking orange. After a fast googling i came to this thread ( http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/charging-light-blinking-problem-with-hp-probook-4530s... )
using the 8-step guide I managed to boot the laptop just to realise that it won't detect the power cord!
It was really strange, because when I noticed this, my battery was already at 2%!
I shut down the laptop, and tried to open it without the battery, it booted normally, but it still can't detect that the power cord is plugged in!!!!!
On the other thread some mentioned to update the bios, but in my case where it can't detect the power cord, that's impossible, because the procedure requires the laptop to be plugged in.
Now the laptop won't start normally, I have to keep the power button pressed for 40 secs and then plug the power cord. In addition it won't work only with battery, and that is my biggest problem!!
    What should I do now?

    Hello @sakisg4 ,
To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since the HP ProBook 4530s is a commercial product. You can do this here Notebook - HP ProBook, EliteBook, Compaq, Slate/Tablet PC, Armada, LTE

  • G4 1.42 dualie still won't start after replacing power supply.

This Machine was turning off randomly for about a week when it just stopped working. The power light would go on when pressed, but nothing happens.
Tried plugging into a wall socket instead of power strip. Nothing. Reset PMU. Nothing. Battery is good.
Read though many reports and determined the culprit was the Power Supply. The power supply was replaced with original Apple part. The problem remains. Press the power button and the light goes on, release it and the light goes off. Nothing spins up, no chimes, nothing.
Now I'm reading it may be the power button - someone solved the problem by attaching an older keyboard with a start button. I don't have one to test.
I don't want to keep shooting in the dark on this one.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi wagsfx, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Good research so far!
Now I'm reading it may be the power button - someone solved the problem by attaching an older keyboard with a start button. I don't have one to test.
Too bad you're not closer, I have 5 I don't need, because buying 8 was cheaper than buying on on eBay!
Anyway, my suspicion is that if that KB thing works it is the Power Button assembly, but that other things will start going wrong shortly there after.
It's likely not any consolation, but I think the MDDs are the worst G4 ever turned out, I wish I could have my $20+K back from buying, repairing, & upgrading them, since all 3 are now dead as a doornail.
Hang on though, there's many far greater experts here than I, & I hope they can drop in with some better ideas for you!

  • HP6310 won't respond to power button, camera light flashes

After turning my HP6310 off by unlugging the power cord, I can't get it to turn back on properly. I plugged the power cord back in and the display lights up blank and the camera light in the front lower left flashes. The power button does not light up and when pressed, does nothing.

    Hi @mcdillon99,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that your HP officejet 6310 will not respond to the power button, and the camera light flashes. I am sorry to hear this, but happy to help!
I would recommend to go through this guide, The HP Printer Won't Turn On or Respond When the Power Button is Pressed. (Even though the guide title may not match your issue, I believe the solutions will help).

  • SG 200-08 All LED lights flashing green after power failure

Thinking back, about a month ago I updated the firmware (sorry I can't check version at the moment). The switch has been working fine since then. Today I needed to move some power cables and the switch lost power. Now ALL of the LED lights are flashing green and I can't access the switch. I've tried setting a static IP on my laptop to 192.168.1.20, mask 255.255.255.0, and accessing the switch on 192.168.1.254, but there's no response. I've tried holding in the reset button for at least 30 seconds while the switch is powered on, AND while powering it on. None of that has worked. Also when I first power it on, the system LED flashes orange very quickly for a second or so, then all of the LEDS start flashing green.
    What am I missing?

Its been a few months, so I don't remember the details, but I think it was a combination of using the reset button and then opening a browser to the default IP address. If you look at the screenshot I posted it has the IP address I used. I downloaded the firmware again and the webpage in the screenshot is where the router is asking me for the location of the firmware I downloaded. After it finished reloading the firmware it worked again.

  • Power Adapter/charger LED flickers?

Searched the PB forum but haven't found this one...
My 1ghz Ti PB power adapter charge LED (the plastic circle at the end of the plug that goes into the computer) starts flickering slightly. Just a very slight rapid flicker. There is no damage to the plug that I can see. When this happens, the screen flickers slightly at the same time. I have a new inverter board that I'm going to install to fix a (separate) back light problem and I'm wondering if these two are some how related? Or is the adapter going bad? Don't have another one to try to see if the problem disappears. Anyone had this problem?

Hi, Adrift. Your adapter ringlight should never flicker, period. If you don't have any other access to a known-good adapter, take your PB and adapter to a local Apple dealership and see whether they have a good PBG4 adapter with which you can perform a quick test. This used to be a simple matter when Powerbooks that used the same adapter as yours were still for sale and demonstrators were on display; it may be less convenient now that the MacBooks and MBPs use a different adapter. But many stores will still have good older adapters around for use in testing, and may let you use one for a few minutes at no charge. If it doesn't flicker, replace your adapter.
Do you have a good main battery in the Tibook? If so, and if your adapter is intermittently cutting out or losing voltage, I would expect the display and all other components of the PB to be powered by the battery during the split-second outages of power from the adapter, without any loss of data or function. If you have no main battery or a dead one, then even a momentary loss or diminution of power from the adapter carries high risks: of the loss of unsaved work in progress, and of directory corruption potentially leading to the loss of stored data.
I know nothing about the parameters that govern when or how quickly the battery takes over for the adapter or the adapter takes over again from the battery, but of course under normal circumstances, unplugging the adapter cable from the computer with a good battery in place carries no risk at all. So the switchover, at least in that direction, must be instantaneous. Perhaps it isn't as quick going the other way, and that may come into play in your situation. This is just speculation, though.
I can't tell you whether problems with your inverter board and/or backlight might be related to the adapter problem.

  • Macbook Air won't charge or power on

My MacBook Air is 18 months old and won't charge or power on. Technicians diagnosed logic board needs replacing at a massive cost. Has anyone had similar issues or taken this up with Apple. They refuse to assist as warranty expired.

You are going to have to take the machine apart, and see what damage was done to the board that the MagSafe receptacle is attached to. Might be a single, broken connection. Might be much worse.

  • How to read the power and status LEDs on cFP2020

Can the cFP2020 Power and Status LEDs be monitored by a host program? Also, can the Power and Ready LEDs be monitored from the other cFP Modules?

You can not directly read the Network Module Power or Status LED from a host program. Likewise, you can not directly read the Power and Ready LED of an IO module.
However, even though you can not directly ready the LED status, there are ways of finding out most of the information that the LEDs convey.
For the Network Module Power LED, you can infer the status of the Power LED by looking at the channel status for any/all items that are on the bank. If the items have errors indicating that a communication timeout has occured or an addressed item does not exist, then it is probable that the unit is offline (either because of no power or a fault). The Status LED indicates the current operating status of the Network module and in most cases, if it is flashing
, then a fault has occured that shutdown the processor. In most cases, you will not be able to determine that the Status LED is flashing, as the Status LED indicates a fault condition which will put the unit into a non-standard operating mode (e.g. firmware corruption, unassigned IP Address, or an OS fault).
For the IO modules, each channel on a module can report status, and based upon the status you can infer the state of the LEDs. If the module does not have the Power LED lit, the most likely status will be "Addressed item does not exist". If the module has the Power LED but no Ready LED, then the status will indicate that the "item is unconfigured". If the module has both a Power and Ready LED, than the channel should report either a good status, or a channel specific error (if applicable).

  • KT4V & XP2200+, Win2000 Pro won't restart or power down on shut

    KT4V & XP2200+, Win2000 Pro won't restart or power down on shut
Just picked up new KT4V and a XP 2200+ for a system build-up for a magazine article story. It also has a Maxtor 120GB 7200 HDD and 1GB of Micron PC2700 (2.5 latency) RAM. Installed Win 2000 Pro on the system (later another HDD will get XP Pro). The Video card is an HIS manufactured ATI Radeon 9000 w/64MB.
Had a few problems on install, got STOP screens a few times. Finally installed and Win 2000 runs fine, EXCEPT that it won't restart warm (like after installing apps or even selecting restart from shutdown) and the system won't power off on full shut down. I get the "It's safe to turn off your system" screen. Checked everywhere in the BIOS setup and 2000 Pro Control Panel for a selection, but there is none!
On restarts, it seems to go throught the "post" and just when the Windows start should come on, blank screen. HDD stops seeking, like doesn't know what to do.
This is also occuring with the Win XP Pro installation, but the OS is even acting flakier!
    Latest BIOS has been installed.
I finally spoke to a MSI Tech Rep (took three days of calling and two unreturned messages), with less then what sounded much experience or actual knowledge, he said that it was an incompatibility problem with various ATI Radeon based video cards. I said, WHAT?! You don't design a MB to be compatible with the largest mfg. of video cards! Can anyone confirm this???
I am less than inspired by MSI,  folks. And, it will be related in the article I'm writing.  X(
Does anyone have any ideas regarding the reason and solutions to the problems??

well i cannot say ive noticed it,a search here only got a single thread re both cards together,i would have expected more
tried http://www.memtest86.com on ram,try one by one if multi sticks
what psu, combined watts ,amps 3 main voltages
seem to recall reading with them they have the extra power intake, and one guy advised making sure card was only thing on it
in device manager whats pc seen as,acpi uniprocessor?
also whats irq sharing look like
    try latest bios as well
