Dual Harddrives Mountain Lion

Hi, how do I register my copy of mountain lion? I changed harddrives and I've been having permission problems with the harddrive that are stemming from the OS not being verified on my new harddrive. I purchased Mountain Lion from the App store on my old harddrive and Carbon Copy Cloned the old drive onto the new one (the clean install is annoying, because I have 2 internal harddrives, and setting up locations confuses me). Any help with how to show my computer/ apple that I didn't torrent my copy of Mountain Lion would be much appreciated. I still have the old harddrive in an external enclosure (the one that I originally downloaded it onto if that helps). Thank you
Or if someone could list the neccessary steps in order to do a clean install as well as link the applications on the secondary drive.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I had the same problems when I was using Snow Leopard. The problem is that my user account is not allowed to read/write my harddrives, but not all the time. I can't seem to pin point what I'm doing that is causing it, and thus it appears that the permissions for each drive will randomly switch between my account being read only and read/write. When I was on snow leopard I had a similar issue which occured whenever I opened itunes (only itunes, no clue why). Neither of my Harddrives get a lock on them, just the access privelages are changed. Also in disk utility, the repair permissions option isn't clickable

  • Can I dual boot Mountain Lion and OSX10.6.8

Can I dual boot Mountain Lion and OSX 10.6.8. I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my InDesign CS2 no longer works. If yes, how does one do it.
    Thanks all,

Yes, as long as your computer shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, restart with the C key held down, and install it onto a separate partition or drive; if you use Boot Camp, repartitioning the internal drive may disable it.

  • How do I dual boot Mountain Lion

I recenetly purchased a new iMac with Mountain Lion installed on it. My previous Mac runs Lion. I still have a few apps which I need to support older devices for and need to run an earlier version of xCode than is allowed on Mountain Lion. My hope was to setup a dual boot system with both Lion and Mountain Lion to do this. So far I have not been able to figure this out. I've tried to follow walkthroughs on the web, but they were all had Lion and were making a Mountain Lion partition. Any input would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Yep. Your new machine can only be started with the version of Mountain Lion with which it came.
There isn't much you can do. If you wish to spend money you can purchase Parallels 8 for OS X and try running Lion or Snow Leopard in emulation. See Running Lion as a Guest OS in Parallels Desktop 7 - YouTube.

  • Dual boot, Mountain Lion and Mavericks and Migration Assistant

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook Pro Retina which cam with Mountain Lion installed, and I want to upgrade to Mavericks. However, I have a need to run some apps in Mountain Lion, as official support for those apps will not go past 10.8.5 (Avid's Pro Tools 10) and I need to be able to open archived projects.
I also wish to clean install both operating systems fresh, and do a stripped ML partition, with bare bones essentials, on the smallest partion possible. Mavericks will be the main system, and ML won't host user data, only the legacy apps. I am fine with erasing my 500GB SSD.
My current process is to install ML from the recovery partition, and use disk utility to partition before I do, then install Mavericks from a bootable USB (already made).
    So my questions are these:
    For ML:
    1. What size partition is the minimum necessary to install ML, plus the apps and run without hitch? The legacy apps will take maybe 4GB.I want this as small as possible.
    2. When I do a fresh install of ML, what apps can safely be deleted without affecting the system?
    For Mavericks:
When migrating my old user account to Mavericks, I don't wish to migrate the apps, just the user settings and the data. I will make an entire backup of the user directory on a separate drive before I start this process, as well as a Time Machine backup. I then plan to migrate the account settings and data, but manually reinstall the extra apps. The reason for this is I have a lot of third party apps, and some are trials I decided to uninstall, and they all leave junk behind.
    3. If I import the user account settings and data only, what cruft or orphaned files should I be aware of?
    4. Are there options to cherry pick the settings that are migrated?
    5. If I manually copy, for example, the mail folder, iCal or messages folder in my user library, and place it into the appropriate user folder in the new account in a worst case scenario, will there be any drama I should be aware of?
Lastly, a question of Apple ID's/iCloud:
    6. Before doing this process, should I deauthorise my iTunes account, or will that be fine when migrated anyway?
    7. What will happen with my iPhone when I sync to a fresh install on mavericks, will it attempt to wipe my iPhone, or is that part of the user data that is migrated?
Thank you for your time and patience reading this!

    ML
    1. I'd go with at least 40 because you need some extra disk space for the computer to work properly. You can install that one partition, load it, and see how much disk space is used and adjust as required. Also boot from it and make sure it runs okay.
    2. Everything but the Apple applications, which you probably won't be able to delete.
    Mavericks
Almost all applications are stored in the hard drive level Applications folder. Check your user applications folder and if there are no applications, just copy the entire user folder.
    3. Hard to answer. In theory, none.
4/5. They may not work due to differences between 10.8 and 10.9. You might want to consider using Setup Assistant and restore from Time Machine. Then delete the stuff you don't want.
    6. Shouldn't matter - same computer. I have 2 partitions and both are authorized for iTunes and the App Store.
    7. If you restore from Time Machine, you should be okay.

  • Problem with dual boot after upgrade to Mountain lion

    Hello Every One,
I have a Macbook pro from 2009 which had dual boot option Windows 7 + Snow Leopard.
The windows 7 had 2 partitions (C; and D: an extended partition).
I upgraded the OS X to Mountain lion. after upgrade the system showed 3 options at boot time. Mac, Windows and a recovery partition.
when i boot to windows the D: drive is gone...I mean even though i can see the partition in partition software, windows 7 stopped showing D: in "My computer".
So i used testdisk utility to get the D: drive back and now when i boot to mountain Lion i am able to access both C:(BOOTCAMP) and D: drives.
but now the problem is during boot time my Mac Book pro doesn't show the windows option.
Can some suggest a means to boot into windows 7? Also what is the purpose of recovery partition that Mountain lion adds to the system? I mean is it going to hurt if i get rid of it so that i can go back to my old configuration of 3  primary partitions (1 for windows 7 ...C: bootcamp + MountainLion) + 1 extended partition for D:
    any help would be appreciated?
    Regards

  • Mac Pro Mountain Lion Kernel Panic Dual Video Cards

I've been getting constant panics since upgrading to Mountain lion on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Worth noting is I have dual GT 120 Video Cards and dual 30" LCDs.  Every panic seems to be caused by com.apple.NVDAResman
This computer has been rock solid since 2009 and only after "updating" to Mountain Lion has it become unstable.
Was hoping 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 would fix the issued, but neither have.  It's worse than ever.  Crashing every day.
Already reinstalled the OS, tested the RAM, etc.  No change.  Still crashes everyday.
What should I do?  It's really eating into productivity...

I have a dual boot lab that I set up for a school.  The partitions consist of Mountain Lion OSX and Windows 7 Ent.  I use bootpicker software for choosing the operating system at startup.  When I select the windows partition, it take just under 2 minutes from selection to the windows login screen.  It seems to take incredibly long for the mac to "shut down and hand over the operating system to windows.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get this timing faster?
    Thanks for any ideas/input

The only suggestion I can make is to look ar ReFind (previuosly ReFit). Startup mamangement is one of its features.
    But
It is very powerful so test it for yourself before deploying it. Some of the functions are best kept out of the hands of the curious, or 'playful'
And you never answered this question.
Tell me what the needs are, do the users always need to choose Windows or is this a variable?

  • Mountain Lion 1.8.2 update made my dual monitor stop working on Mac Pro mid 2012

Just done Apple's update for Mac OS X Mountain Lion to 1.8.2 and after rebooting my dual monitor stopped working.
If I go on preferences -> Displays it shows me only one of my two monitors, even if I invert the connections the 2nd monitor doesn't shows up and there seems no way to enable it again.
    Any suggestion?
P.S. I already tried to set from "Best for display" to "Scaled", but after rebooting Mountain Lion 1.8.2 reset it to "Best for display"

    Ok,
did some extra test here, but first of all my configuration:
Mac Pro (Mid 2012) with ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB.
2 LCD 24" Wide-screen (1st monitor Hyundai W240D and 2nd Monitor HP w2448hc), both LCD worked perfectly until reboot after installing OS X 1.8.2
After reboot only the 1st monitor wored fine, the 2nd not even listed, so tried to invert cable connections on the 2 miniports on the ATI video card, but nothing changed, still only the 1st monitor working.
Did a second test, disconnected the 1st monitor and connected ONLY the 2nd and now the second works fine.
Tried to connect 2nd monitor on a different miniport, and i still works fine.
Updated my MacBook Pro to 1.8.2 (it as an nVidia card) and connected my 2nd monitor to it and everything works fine, both the laptop LCD and my HP LCD are working fine.
So it looks like Apple screwed up the ATI driver on the latest 1.8.2, now only ONE miniport is active.
To all users with the same Mac Pro configuration: hold to update to Mountain Lion 1.8.2 until Apple fix this driver issue.
More info are on the Console output, so will have to contact Apple on-line support to signal this bug.

  • Will upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion erase my rEFIT dual boot Windows?

    Hi All,
At the suggestion of one of the users in a different section of the forum, I am posting my question here in hopes of finding someone who might have already done this upgrade and can speak from experience.
I have a MacBook Air that is currently setup to dual-boot OSX Lion or Windows 7 with Boot Camp. The Windows 7 was a requirement in order to be able to use my laptop for work. I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion but I also don't want to erase the partitioning on the hard-drive and I want to keep my Windows 7 installation intact. If I choose to upgrade (instead of a clean install) will this delete the Windows partition and wipe out my disk or will it retain my dual-boot option as it currently is?
    Thanks for your help.

Then wait on update, and plan to (goes without saying hopefully) to have  backups of both that you can always restore. Especially as this is a work computer in essence.
Lion had trouble until 10.7.1 and the Lion 4.0 Windows Support Software itself was buggy for those that were installing Windows (or upgrade their boot camp drivers with Lion's).
Until people look at the Lion Recovery partition and whether that changed in size or something, or other changes to the partition tables.
WinClone 3 and CampTune can both help preserve your installation and Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backup of Lion and Lion Recovery, in addition to TimeMachine. (TimeMachine has been improved and more flexible).
And store your ML install package somewhere - given how slow it is DL'ing I'd wait days to even bother.

  • I currently run Mac Pro with three hard drives. Can I dual boot or even triple boot with Snow Leaopard on one drive and Mountain Lion or Lion on others?

I currently run Mac Pro with three hard drives. Can I dual boot or even triple boot with Snow Leopard on one drive and Mountain Lion or Lion on others?
I need to keep Snow Leopard so that I can run some old softward.

If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.
CCC can clone Lion Recovery - great for moving or backup.

  • Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive

Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive

Yes as I said before. If your model Mac came with Snow Leopard and you are now running Mt Lion and have Windows installed in a Boot Camp Partition all you have to do is make the Mt Lion partition smaller, take the free space and make it another Mac partition and you should be able to install Snow Leopard into that partition.
I have Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion installed on my MBP. No Windows in a Boot Camp partition because I run Windows XP in a Virtual Machine on both Lion and Mt Lion.

  • Can't dual boot Leopard on MB Pro Mountain Lion

I'm wondering if it is possible to dual boot an earlier OSX version on a machine pre-installed with Mountain Lion.
I bought a new MBPro (9.2) which came with Mountain Lion pre-installed.
I also have the hard disk from my older MacBook (keyboard non-functional) which has two partitions: OSX Leopard (10.5.8 I believe) and Windows XP. I have put this disk in an external USB housing.
I would like to be able to dual boot Leopard on my MBP from the USB external HD and run Parallels/Windows XP and other OSX applications non-supported by ML also on that disk.
After plugging in the USB drive, I pressed the option key during boot and 4 are displayed; MacHD (ML internal), Recovery, MacHD (Leopard) and Windows XP.
When I select the Mac HD with Leopard to boot, the system crashes.
In case it helps, both the internal disk on the MBP and the external Leopard partition are formatted in Max OS Extended (journaled) and I can read/write all OSX files and run ML supported apps on the external HD when its plugged into the MBP running Mountain Lion.
    Can anybody help on this?

    No, it's not possible:

  • Dual boot drive - Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard - Correct order to load software /apps?

    Hi
I want to create a dual boot drive for Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard as some of my hardware (is not supported in Mountain Lion).
I am happy how to do this, I just want to know if there is a correct way to install software and apps.
My plan was to do a clean install of both using two partitions, the larger going to ML and smaller one for SL.  I was going to install SL from the DVD and then after updating from 10.6. to 10.6.8 and download ML from the app store and install on the larger partition.
Do I install all the software I use like Final Cut, Aperture, iLife (for Garageband) etc on the ML or SL partition or on both.  Also, is there a better way / practise of the order software updates / apps and boxed software should be installed when doing a clean machine install.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

    Thanks mende1
So, if I have software I need to use on both ML and SL - for example Final Cut as I have a Canopus AVDC box which is not supported in ML but only SL, do I need to install the same software in both OS?
I usually open apps using spotlight and didn't know if it would software / apps would open if already installed on the other partition?
    Thanks again
    Matt

  • Will logic pro x run on my mac mini dual core intel i5 with 4gb of ram and mountain lion ?

    hi there guys,
will logic pro x run on my mac mini dual core intel i5 with 4gb of ram and mountain lion ?
I'm not sure if my machine is 64 bit - it is the current model base mac mini.
Many thanks for any help you can offer !
    Simon

SkiJumptoes is right. 4GB is not enough to comfortably run Logic X.
Your Mac Mini will need DDR3 SODIMM RAM. That website seems incredibly steep though. I guess that's the price of finding it for you. You're better off going to any below:

  • Is it possible to do dual boot in Mountain Lion using Ubuntu 14.2?

Since I updated my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion my Macbook (white) has become extremelly slow and have frequently locked.
Is it possible to dual boot using Ubuntu 14.2 (latest version) or even erase OSx and install Ubuntu only in my Macbook?
    Thanks.

Not sure if you ever got help with this but I would first make sure you have at least 4GB of RAM and then perform a clean install of 10.8 or 10.9.  I have never been a fan of OS upgrades.  Especially from 10.6 to 10.8/10.9 since the OSs are drastically different.
