Dual Layer DVD and files??

Thanks SDMacuser for your help last week.
Will a .img file burn a DL DVD successfully (assuming Verbatim DL+R media, Toast Lite and Lacie DL burner)?
Would a .cdr file burn give better results?
Or should I burn directly from iDVD?
Any ideas on where to get Verbatim DVD-R DL Inkjet printable discs?

Check out Sam's Club which is where I buy mine (or Fry's Electronics).... But then again my drive prefers minus media and so do I. Newer burners / S-Drives work well on plus media DL. Older drives sometimes choke on plus media and DL is out of the question unless you own a newer burner).
I nearly always burn from a disc image at 4x or slower using Roxio Toast (works better than apple's disc utility IMO).
or see ebay Item number: 260124945356
Good luck!

  • Dual layer DVD and FCP movie

    Hi
I am going to try and use a dual layer DVD for a two-parts long movie.
Is it possible to use a "session mode" ?
For example, could I burn one layer, in such a way people can see how it looks when they it on a DVD player
and then burn the second part... or even burn the first one and a little of the second one before burning the rest of it ?
    Feasible ?
I can use Toast 7.0.2 with my computer.
    Thanks
    Bernard

No, I don't think you can. It's all or nothing.

  • Dual layer DVD and Powermac G5

I have a Powermac G5 2.7 mhz Dual. I use installed dvd recorder which is PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-109, Revision: A912. For the first time in my life I tried to burn DL DVD-R . But I can not. I counn't find an old technical specification fro my mac but is this correct that it does support Dual layer DVD burning?
    What's wrong?

Take a look at System Profiler - Burning:
Does your drive support DVD-R DL - or does is support only DVD+R DL?

  • Two hour sequence to dual-layer DVD?

    Hi,
    I'm confused.
I have a two hour 16:9 sequence (actually 1 hour, 56 minute) that I want to put on a dual-layer DVD. I guess I didn't fully think it through when I sent it from FCP to Compressor and selected DVD 16:9 120 minute fastest encode, because it compressed it to 4.04 gigs rather than twice that size at a better quality. Now I'm looking for a setting that tells it my destination is a dual-layer DVD and I don't see it.
Additionally, the m2v file that came from that process cut off the final minute or so of my sequence. Why in the world would that happen?
    Kenny

These instructions assume you're using DSP for authoring. I don't know if iDVD has DL capability.
The 'calculator' in Compressor assumes a single layer DVD. The key is to look at the summary, which is the far left tab in the Inspector. About 1/3 from the top, it will show the estimated file size. Adjust the bit rate selector until you get the file size approaching the capacity of the Dual Layer disk. You have other restrictions to consider as well. Totally data rate of video(s)audio(s)other data cannot exceed the maximum for the DVD spec (nominally 10mb/s).
Once inside DSP, when you burn the disk, you'll be asked to select a marker to indicate where the burner will change from writing to the first layer to the second layer. This should occur at a convenient location in the video (a fade to black, eg.) near the end of the first layer capacity. If you don't already have a marker near that point, be sure to add one for the switch-over.
    Good luck

  • Dual Layer DVD+R, Optiarc. Successful burn, no mounting.

Strange one this, and difficult to point the blame on anything in particular.
Got a new Mac Pro (early 2008) recently, all is well so far. I wanted to back up plenty of my stuff onto some Dual Layer DVDs - and burned six discs successfully using Disk Utility for burning cdr files, isos and stand alone (Finder) data.
All burned and verified successfully. All mounted successfully. Applications, programs and so on can be run and opened from the disk, HOWEVER, if I eject the disk and put it back in, it fails to mount, and claims it is blank. Works great if I never eject the disk, but upon reinsertion, the disk is unreadable.
Under an XP installed Boot Camp, there's the same issue. I burned an iso, installed what I needed to install straight from the DVD just fine. Left the disk in, restarted into OSX, the disk appeared on the desktop just fine. I eject the disk and put it back in, .... disk is unmountable. Same disk that installed software from the DVD under XP is also unmountable under XP!
I'm really puzzled, here! Are my disks completely useless? Is the firmware incorrect? Is Leopard failing? I'm only getting this with DL disks - normal DVDs and CDRs are fine.
Anyone else getting this? Anyone able to offer any suggestions?! Thanks!

Ok, so I answered my own question!. If anybody else is having this, or similar problems, I found that a new firmware is available for this drive, and can be found at : http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-7170A/
And I flashed the drive using firmware v1.85 - this version now successfully mounts the previously written disks.
Flashed using the Win32 version of BinFlash (http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/) under XP on Boot Camp.

  • Dual Layer DVD write error #80020022 - failure to communicate with disk

This only happens on Dual Layer DVDs, and always just as it's finishing. "Communcation with the disk drive failed error code: 80020022"
Used Disk Util and direct burn via finder - both give same error. The image is a .cdr created via DiskUtil, original from a factory cut dual layer DVD, about 7.2GB. The target blank is a "Double Layer DVD+R" Memorex.
The resultant disk is full, but unusable. Re-insertion sees it as a blank disk with no usable space. It wrote something, but certainly not the TOC?
MacBook Pro 2.5, about 6 months old, lastest Leopard
Please - any ideas? Do I have a hardware issue?

Wow - thanks for the quick reply, pullman! I did all of the ideas you listed, no luck. The only way to make this fail is to write to a double sided DVD, I've gone through a stack already just testing/failing. This also fails when writing to a double sided DVD through the finder (then clicking on "burn")
Here's a copy of the console error logs:
    http://baxnet.com/bs/picture6.png
-- which indicate a hardware/polling error on the DVD drive itself.
Note that it is complaining about /dev/disk1, which on my system maps to the DVD drive:
    Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-867
    Revision: HA13
    Serial Number: HG010865
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    Low Power Polling: Yes
Thanks again for your help - but still no luck. According to the logs, this may well be a device/hardware problem. Would you suggest a call to Apple support?

  • Can't burn dual layer DVD's

Now that full retail copies of Leopard seem to be rarer than hens teeth I thought it about time I made a back up copy of mine to see my G5 imac through.
I've created a new disk image, popped in a dual layer DVD and on clicking burn get the message "The disc inserted does not have enough free space" despite it being only about 6.5 gb, and using a dual 2.4ghz iMac.
I've tried several types of DL disk, confirmed that system profiler gives DVD dl write status, and have no problem burning cds or single layer dvds.
Anyone come across this, and if so, did you cure it. Thanks

This is a genuine problem. I bet that if you tried to read a burned (that is, not manufactured) Dual Layer disc (either +R DL or -R DL) you would not be able to do that either; my iMac simply refuses to read the disc, which has to be force-ejected at startup.
I work in the CD/DVD manufacturing industry (and have for nearly 10 years) and we are getting complaints from customers that they cannot read our DL burned media, either +R DL or -R DL. However, only people with Macs have this problem. I have confirmed the DVDs play on every PC in our office, and also several set-top units, but none of our three Macs work. To dispel the whole "your media is junk" theory, I have tried several brands, including verbatim, ritek, and CMC magnetics (Hotan). I have also also tested the burned media in our $5,500 CD/DVD analyzer and it conforms to respective book standards and does not have any POFs and very low if any PIFs.
As a last resort, I hooked up an external IDE Pioneer 118 via a FireWire bridgeboard (a drive actually removed from a PC that played the DVDs just fine) to an office iMac. Unlike the internal Matsushita drive, this drive will read the Discs, but MacOS refuses to mount them!
This has to be some kind of problem with MacOS or the hardware. Either Apple has engineered it to not work with non-manufactured Dual Layer discs, or there is some big mistake here. Searching google and these forums reveals all sorts of similar issues.
Come on Apple respond to this post!!!!

  • Can you copy onto dual layer dvds

Have just purchased a 17" 1.67 ghz powerbook and was wondering if the dvd burner can burn onto dual layer dvds
    Many Thanks

No currently shipping PowerBook is advertised as having the capability to burn dual layer DVDs, and they can't be burned in a single layer drive. To check what types of disks your optical drive can burn to in Tiger, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and click on More Info. Once the System Profiler has opened, check the information for your burner; all the types of disks you can burn will be listed here.

  • Outputting a file for dual layer dvd

Hi...is there a setting in Adobe media encoder that automatically caculates your timeline to fit a dual layer DVD?  The MPEG DVD output setting automatically shrinks it to 3 gigs, enough to fit a standard DVD.  I feel the quality of the file would be better if it was larger and burned to a dual layer.
    Thanks

If you're authoring in Encore, you set the Layer Breaks there.  You can let Encore find them for you automagically, or you can set your own, or render out your own separate timeline for each layer.  Read p.178 of the Encore Help PDF.

  • First-gen MacBook Pro and dual-layer DVD+R?

I have a first-generation MacBook Pro (2 GHz Core Duo) running Leopard 10.5.2. I have been given a dual-layer DVD+R, which has a 5 GB AVI file on it that I need to work with. The issue I'm having is, while the MacBook Pro can read the DVD and see the AVI file, when I attempt to copy the AVI to my Desktop, the file gets roughly halfway copied and then I get an error saying that some or all of the file cannot be read. Could this be an issue with my particular model of MacBook Pro and DVD+R DVDs? Is there any way I can get to this file? Any help would be most appreciated.

As I understand it, there's a difference between stamped dual layer DVDs (which most movie DVDs are) and burned dual layer DVDs (which is the DVD I have). I actually have 2 other Macs in the house - a dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5 (June 2004 model) and a 1.66 GHz Core Duo Mac Mini. Both Macs simply spit out the DVD about 5 or 10 seconds after I insert it. I'm suspecting it's an issue with the DVD type, but if anyone could shed some light I'm appreciate it. Many thanks!

  • DVD SP Dual Layer burning and DVD@ccess difficulties

I'm making my first dual layer project and I can't format from DVD SP 3 b/c I get this error message (see below). I burned the project in toast 6 and the project works fine in Macs except for the URL DVD a@cess link doesn't connect. (It works in my computer) The DVD 2nd layer doesn't work in some PC's. I"m using Verbatim + R DL Media. Can anyone give me some suggestions?
Can anyone explain this error message to me:
Formatting was not successful. Layer 1 cannot exceed Layer 0 for a OTP configured disc. Please choose a suitable marker location that will support this condition.

    Hey James
this particular error means that layer 1 is larger (as in size) to layer 0.
since we dont have enough details of your project, i cannot correctly tell you what to do.
i will ask you however, where did you set your layer break? tell us how much larger layer 1 is to layer 0. what will you be burning your image to, DLT, disc, hard drive? did you check the format properties and see where a suitable layer break can be? did you set layer break to automatic?
any help could give you a fast answer

  • Dual Layer DVD Capacity, and Recommended Media?

    Hey All,
Just a few quick questions. What is the formatted storage capacity of a Dual Layer DVD? I know that the listed size is 8.54 GB, but is that what you can actually get on the disc, or is it less than that? I have so much content that I'll need to cut things to make room, so I need to know exactly how much stuff I need to cut.
My second question is if anyone has some recommended dual layer media. I'm looking for whatever will work well with the burners that Apple uses in their Macs, and unfortunately Apple doesn't offer DL DVD's. Thanks!
    20" 2Ghz G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi,
I usually dont go more than 8.1-8.2 it could take more, but from my experience, if its to full, stuff will freeze on it, Once my audio was un-sync, I toke some off, and it whent find.
    Hope it helps

  • Maximizing HD Video with iDVD/DVD Studio Pro and dual layer DVD

I have 30 minutes of edited home video from iMovie HD and I am trying to use iDVD to burn the project. I have a dual layer DVD+ disk and would like to maximize the quality of the project to 8 gigs. Each time I change the project info, etc. the project still is just 1 gig. Any suggestions, please....

iDVD produces NTSC/PAL videoDVDs within the specs given by the socalled Red Book Standards...- max bitrate is 8 - 9kB/sec... which is, in your case 30min=1GB
(but: iDVD "wastes" a lot of bandwidth for PCM audio....)
DVDSP/Compressor allows a manual setting of bitrates, so you can devide the max. rate wiser between audio and video... but some dvdplayers (esp. software ones in the PC world) don't handle such high bitrates...
as said above, no homebrewn HiDef DVD so far, lets see, what 10.5 and the new ProMacs will bring to us....

  • IDVD and Dual Layer DVDs

I've been perusing the forum and see a lot of questions about this but not a lot of good answers.
We have a G5 Mac, with a SuperDrive, OS X 4.11 and iDVD 5.0.1. My wife does a lot of photo/video work and has done several dual layer DVDs with no problems; there's a radio button that lets her select dual layer media.
Last summer the SuperDrive went south and the local Apple dealer replaced it with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-875S. The specs for this drive say it supports writing dual layer media. System Profiler agrees: it supports writing dual layer DVDs.
iDVD doesn't agree: the radio button has disappeared and there is no way to select dual layer media. This is a problem as she has a project sitting here that will not fit on single layer media.
    We've tried Patchburn: nothing.
We've tried a forced update for iDVD 5.0.1: nothing.
Don't really want to go to Toast: another set of software for her to learn and me to support.
At this point, it looks like either having the dealer pull this drive and put in a for-real Apple-branded SuperDrive or find a copy of iLife 06 (to get iDVD 6; it looks like '6 is the latest we can go without updating the OS as well). Cost is about the same either way but I'd rather not pay it if I can avoid it.
I'm looking for other suggestions or ideas.

I cannot remember the options for iDVD 5 or 6. I am now using iDVD 08, and it has a dropdown bar in Preferences where one can choose single or dual layer. I would go with iLife 6. See if you can find a disk for sale somewhere ....maybe ebay? If the price is higher than the original cost of $79, or if you cannot locate an iLife 06 disk, email me. I may be able to put you in touch with a place that has a few of them left.
