Dual layer DVD burner any time soon?

I have an old PowerBook 1.33ghz. I'm itching to replace it with a MacBookPro. I upgraded this PowerBook with a dual layer DVD burner, and I use it a lot. I moved to the US from the UK and send many DVD's back to family and friends in the UK. I can't live without the dual layer DVD writer, plus backing up requires less DVD's and hence less space on my shelves.
Anyone here know when Apple will release a model with a dual layer DVD writer? I refuse to buy an external.
This old G4 has better DVD support than Apples flagship portable computer, doesn't seem right does it. I keep thinking I can live without dual layer, but its just such a step back.
Anyone know of when this may change and MacBookPro will get a dual layer burner? I dont know how long I can wait to get my hands on the new MacBookPro . . .

As soon as the industry can make one (so thin). I'll be buying one to replace it on my MBP. Might be Blu-ray

  • Recommendations on Dual Layer DVD Burner Purchase

Anyone have any recommendations on a Dual Layer DVD burner to purchase to replace the old superdrive?

Nope - both formats are for both platforms, but there was a spate of +R players and discs made available on PCs when Apple were only using -R. However, I have two or three PC burners that were -R only (and are now sitting on a shelf somewhere) from those days. The capacity of both is so close as to not be an issue, although +R does hold slightly more data. The gross capacity of a DVD-R is 4.7GB, which is in fact 4.372GB when used in a computer. For DVD+R the gross is 4.73GB which converts to 4.377GB on your computer. I guess for some folk that additional capacity might be necessary, but it isn't really worth worrying too much about, IMO.
Using dual format drives is a good idea, as you can then use either type of disc... however if you read into the background of the formats you'll see that -R is slightly ahead of +R in the compatibility stakes, although more and more players are able to deal with both equally well.
When it comes to burning a DVD in your superdrive, the slower you burn the better the compatibility is likely to be, however some folk report 100% success with fast burns every time (I've had my share of problems with faster burners). As long as you get an Apple compatible drive you should be OK, if faster burning is what you want to do.
Layer break points - on a dual layer disc there comes a point when the laser in the player has to switch from the first to the second layer in order to access the data written there. The point at which this happens is controllable by the DVD author and is called the layer break point. However, on some media (specifically dual layer DVD-R) there is no point in setting this up as the first layer will get written until full, no matter what. There will then be an automatically set break point. When this occurs the change over is flagged as 'seamless' which is intended to make a smooth switch over but there are some players which cannot handle this kind of switch and it needs to be flagged as non-seamless. Other types of media (DVD+R DL) will allow you to set the break point where you want it and will allow you to set it as non-seamless. This helps increase the compatibility of your disc when playing back in set top players.
In DVDSP this means it is probably better to use DVD+R DL media when creating a DL sized project.

  • Dual layer dvd burning

    Hi,
I need some help regarding dual layer dvd burning.
I never burned a dual layer dvd before and am going to in the next few days for a big movie screening. So I better get this right.
How do I set the layer break? do I just set it to be automatic or should I set a chapter in the track? if yes, then where do I suppose to put the chapter.
Is there any advise regarding dual layer burning ? so that I have less possibilities of messing things up.
Its a 115 mins movie. Im planning to encode it with 6.5 avg 8 max.
Is it safe to put a lot of chapters in?
I won't have dvd menu. I will just set it to play straight away.
    thanks.
    Jack

I'm not an expert in the least but I have worked with duel layers and let me tell you than can be a real s.o.b. I'm not sure what the scoop is on them but they tend to glitch out while your burning. I made three and 1 worked perfect the other two not at all and for some reason the 1 that did work only played on about half of the DVD players they were played on. When I got it into a DVD player that worked the chapter markers were not a problem. I had four seperate segments that were linked up and played fine. We used this for a screening in front of about 400 people.
Our feature was about the same length as yours so after the screening we decided to just take the quality down a little (which you can't even tell) and put it on a normal DVD R. We saved a ton in duplication.
Setting the Duel Layer is pretty easy, it's all in the inspector under the disc/volume tab but make sure that in your outline window the main DVD at the top is highlighted. I don't think it matters if you have a chapter in the middle of the footage or anything like that. You can just link up one long stream if needed. Be sure to try out the DVD on the actual player you are going to use. Good luck.

  • Can a G4 eMac take a dual-layer DVD burner?

I've been told it can't, but I'd like a second and third opinion.
    Anyone know?
    Thanks.
    Kurt

Thanks, JMVP. But Neil's thread doesn't really answer my question. What I meant was; I intend to buy an external dual-layer DVD burner and leave the original PowerDrive in the eMac. I want the dual burner to be able to burn dual layer DVD-R disks. Somebody told me that a G4 eMac hasn't got the something-or-other to operate any kind of dual layer burner.
What you're saying is, the right kind of dual layer burner will be compatible with an eMac, OR, the right kind of eMac drive will be compatible with a dual burner?
Sorry to be dense, this is unchartered territory for me.

  • Usb dual layer dvd burner

i'm wanting to purchase a usb dual layer dvd-r burner for my macbook. does anybody know of one that will work with idvd, as i've read that there are compatibility issues with them.

    Use Patch Burn.
    http://www.patchburn.de/
The new MBPs use a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D as an optical drive. It's the same model number as in the MacBook, only with a "D" added for DL. If it's physically the same size, it may work without any modification.

  • Using an external dual layer DVD burner with iDVD??

I created a 3 hour iDVD file on a dual 2.0 G5 desktop with a dual layer DVD Superdrive. I have since migrated to a MacBook Pro. Now, when I open the iDVD file, it says there is no DL Superdrive on my system and that it will convert the file to single layer or something like that, with the option to cancel or proceed. If I purchase an external DL DVD burner will iDVD detect it and allow me to continue working with the file?? Or do I have to get a whole other Mac with a DL Superdrive (iMac or 17" MBP)?? The error specifically stated 'Superdrive', so I am not sure if just an external DL will work. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to have to post this here, but your topic "How can I see the bitrate while playing a DVD?" in the DVD SP forum.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=325516
has been archived and no one can reply to it.
Thank you so much. Using VLC 0.8.5 to view bitrate was an excellent discovery for those who don't have the cash to buy the DigiGami poducts.
Perhaps you should re-open a new topic for others to respond to.

  • Dual Layer DVD Burner

Not to duplicate any other post, but can I burn dual layer DVD's? iDVD asked me to put in a Dual Layer DVD but that doesn't always mean that it is passable. Just can't find anywhere where it states that my G5 iMac with iSight built in has a dual layer burner.
    Thanks for the info.

Run System Profiler. Look under the information about the optical drive. It will list all of the drive's capabilities.

  • Dual Layer DVD Burner Issues

Hello every one. I recently purchased a Sony DRX-810UL/T External DVD burner and am having a few issues with it. I have it connected through firewire to my mac mini runing the latest version of panther. It works well with Toast lite which shipped in the box, however if toast isn't launched, and I insert a dvd into the drive, I get the usual prompt asking me if I want to ignore, eject, or burn the disc. Regardless of which option I choose the disc ejects and i get an error message (0x80020025) telling me the drive is not supported. I posted a message on the maccast forums and was told that it was an issue with panther that it had trouble with dual layer burners. I also read one article that said relaunch the finder would fix this problem however that did not work. I am wondering if anyone else has experiences the same or similiar issues using a dual layer burner in panther. Just to clarify i am not trying it with a dual layer disc, it is a single layer dvd.
Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Matthew

  • Media write error for dual layer DVD burn

I am having a problem burning a dmg to a dual layer DVD using the internal DVD writer. I have tried both Disk Utility and SimplyBurns.
Both program s go through the preparation for the file, and when it attempts to burn the disk I get a 'media write error'. I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks. I have successfully burned both CDs and regular DVDs with the drive.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can fix this?
    Thanks

I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks.
    Try Verbatim DVD+R DL discs.

  • Dual Layer DVD burn question, iDVD 6 or later.

I have a movie that is over 7.7 gigs. My iDVD 6 only allows for 7.7g, dual layer? It says I've gone over the content length? If I have a 8.5g DVD, can't I put more than 7.7g on it?
As it is it will only let me burn about 230 minutes or less, 7.7g I assume.
Do I need a later version to fill my 8.5g dual layer DVD?
    thank you,

  • Which Dual Layer DVD Burner can I use?

I have DVD Studio 1.5.1 and no plans to move to a more recent version. I would like to make dual layer DVDs by purchasing a burner that supports dual layer burning.
What dual layer burners will be recognized and supported by DVD Studio v1.5.1 and Mac OS 9.2.2? I'm using a Powerbook G4 slot loading 800MHZ 15" titanium computer. I am willing to use either an external or internal device.

  • Dual Layer DVD burns not working......

I tried 4 different times, but to no avail. I took one of the burns & utilized a program to extract the Video_TS file, then used Toast to burn it - failed on verification (Toast has never burned a dual layer disc successfully for me on either of my burners). Is there a problem with iDVD not encoding discs properly when using dual layer media? That stuff is expensive & I get tired of creating 80 cent coasters. The other thing that bugs me is that the Apple factory burner only supports DVD+DL media (I will be rectifying that soon with a different internal burner - a Pioneer, not a crappy Hitachi). Any input into this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    hey ara,
it's not about a disc that will work like all pressed discs out there.
it's just that most dual layer discs are dvd+r and most set-top dvd players can only read dvd-r discs.
if you want to look at your burned dual layer discs, look at them in a computer environment.
the lack of compatibility has nothing to do with DVDSP.

  • Dual Layer DVD burning breakpoint problem

I have read a number of posts regarding this and have tried to learn from them but its not working. Working on a macpro 1yr old, dual quad core. edititng in FCP, shot in HDV, compressed to 16:9 SD.
Track 1 is a 95 minute movie. Compressed using compressor in one shot. Track 2 is a 3 minute trailer. track 3 is 5 minutes of deleted scenes.
Added 24 chapters to track 1 designating CH17, 55min, as break point. This should allow for layer 0 to be bigger. It is at a fade to black with little audio so that it is not noticeable while watching. This is a dvd project that I built with our previous version of movie that was compressed in two tracks and assembled on dvd timeline. I was able to burn that project but have compressed the most recent in one shot that took over a day and I would rather not have to recompress.
Getting a message that the dual layer break point has allready been designated and can't be changed. I changed it in the inspector window as well as double checking it in the build format window. Tried to "Build/format", "format", and just burn.
please, any help. I tried to read the posts but am still stumped

There may be a limited number of places to put a break point depending on the amount of material.
Anyway you need to build the disc without formating. Then format the build - it is at that point in the Dialog you will see Black/Gray. The following movie shows where (note there is no break point shown in the movie, it jut s to point out where to look) Proper break points will be black the others which cannot be set as a breakk point will be grey

  • Dual Layer DVD Burn - Error "Mac OS Error -5001"

I have a Powermac G5 dual 1.8 (Machine Model PowerMac7,2) - I upgraded the stock DVD burner to a Lacie Dual Layer burner model SH-S162L Internal. Burns single layer discs and CDs just fine... It will not burn dual layer discs, video_Ts, disc copy, nor data DVD DL's...
I've tried different media, new system install, updating drivers, even contacting Lacie who has sent me a new drive, which I installed today to the same end result of very expensive plastic coasters.
Lacie seems to be no help, and I can't find anything similar on these groups. I'm using Toast 7.0.2. Anyone have any suggestions? My sanity (and DVD budget) are running out! =)

    Hi Christopher,
Please check to see if you have file sharing turned on. In the OS9 era, a -5001 error involved accessing or deaccessing a shared volume, I seem to recall. If file sharing is on, try just turning it off.
    Good Luck,
    John
