Dual layer DVD works on Mac, not on DVD player

I burned a dual layer video DVD (Verbatim DVD+R DL, what else?!) of a longish video. Works fine on the iMac, but my stand-alone DVD player can't use it.
So, my question is: if a DVD Player can play commercial dual layer DVDs, why not home-made ones?
Comments and suggestions welcome!

Hi Klaus1
My first (and only) thought is
BURN SPEED - Set it down to x2 or x4 MAX
Most common origin of DVDs that only plays on this or that or even not on Mac that burned them is speed of x16 etc.

  • Burned a dvd, works on mac not on pc

I burned a dvd. originally a .mov file. but pc based media players are not reading it as a dvd.
I didnt do anything special to the DVD. I made it as basic as it gets. I need to burn something today that can play in anything without a problem, whether its windows media player or the appl edvd player or a real dvd player for a tv.
Thanks so much. I also have several different file conversion softwares that I can use if starting with .mov is a bad idea.

What codec are you using for your .mov? Did you just Export a QuickTime Movie from FCP, or did you change the codec used?
All video DVDs are SD resolution.
If quality if a concern, then you can do one of two things. Change the resolution in FCP by creating a new Sequence at SD resolution and nesting your original Sequence into it. You then have to scale down and render the file. Then you Export a QuickTime Movie. Bring that into DVD SP, or better yet bring that into Compressor and create a MPEG-2 of the video and a AC3 of the audio and bring those into DVD SP.
Or you Export a QuickTime Movie from FCP at HD resolution, bring that into Compressor. Using the setting Best Quality 90 minutes, create a new setting that is the same but with Frame Controls on. Also create a new setting for Dolby 2.0 with the Dialog Normalization set to -31 and the Compression Preset set to None. Bring those files into DVD SP.

  • Dual Layer upgrade, work with iLife05

I have a 1st gen PM Dual 2ghz G5 powermac and am interested in upgrading my DVD RW drive to a double layer. From what I have read, the drive is a UIP (User Installable part) and such. If I was to put in one of the Pioneers or Sonys listed in other messages, would Apple applications reconize it and will it work? I know with the previous generation PM's, if you put in a different model drive, programs like iMovie and such would not reconize it.
    Thanks for the help!

No, I believe the drives still use red laser for both layers; instead it is half and full power to the laser, I BELIEVE.  The blue laser isn't available in any drive as of yet--that is fully a different ballpark (http://www.bluray.com).  There have been firmware upgrades on other manufacturers' optical drives to allow dual layer burning.  As many of us are I as well, I believe, I'm curious if MSI will release a firmware upgrade to allow dual layer burning, especially since I just bought my DVD burner...!!

  • Mountain Lion 1.8.2 update made my dual monitor stop working on Mac Pro mid 2012

Just done Apple's update for Mac OS X Mountain Lion to 1.8.2 and after rebooting my dual monitor stopped working.
If I go on preferences -> Displays it shows me only one of my two monitors, even if I invert the connections the 2nd monitor doesn't shows up and there seems no way to enable it again.
    Any suggestion?
P.S. I already tried to set from "Best for display" to "Scaled", but after rebooting Mountain Lion 1.8.2 reset it to "Best for display"

    Ok,
did some extra test here, but first of all my configuration:
Mac Pro (Mid 2012) with ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB.
2 LCD 24" Wide-screen (1st monitor Hyundai W240D and 2nd Monitor HP w2448hc), both LCD worked perfectly until reboot after installing OS X 1.8.2
After reboot only the 1st monitor wored fine, the 2nd not even listed, so tried to invert cable connections on the 2 miniports on the ATI video card, but nothing changed, still only the 1st monitor working.
Did a second test, disconnected the 1st monitor and connected ONLY the 2nd and now the second works fine.
Tried to connect 2nd monitor on a different miniport, and i still works fine.
Updated my MacBook Pro to 1.8.2 (it as an nVidia card) and connected my 2nd monitor to it and everything works fine, both the laptop LCD and my HP LCD are working fine.
So it looks like Apple screwed up the ATI driver on the latest 1.8.2, now only ONE miniport is active.
To all users with the same Mac Pro configuration: hold to update to Mountain Lion 1.8.2 until Apple fix this driver issue.
More info are on the Console output, so will have to contact Apple on-line support to signal this bug.

  • Buttons work in DVD Studio Pro, but not in DVD Player. Why?

I recently upgraded I movie I made to Dual layer disk. I had already built one for a standard 4.7 dvd but now I was putting on a director's commentary so I need more space. So I opened up the original DVD Studio Pro project, thats worked fine for over a year, then saved it as "director's commentary", then simply changed the settings for a Dual Layer. In DSP the buttons on the first menu work fine. But when I build it and open it up in DVD Player the buttons dont activate. Even when you roll over them there is nothing there.
    Whats happening?

You can find information on Reader Extensions on the developer center: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/livecycle/readerextensions/devcenter.html
For help with the buttons to navigate, go into Designer help and search for "Attaching a database script to a button" (without the quotes) and this should provide you with the information that you need.
Michael, is this where you found your information the first time?

  • Ipod works in Mac not in PC

Device: Latest generation of Ipod Nano. FAT32 formatted for windows.
Problem: Does not work in Windows XP PC.
Analysis: Upon insertion into the PC the ipod randomly disconnects and shows the 'you may safely disconnect' screen. This usually happens about 2 seconds after insertion. It will disconnect and reconnect every 3-5 seconds...
Further: It is not a fault with the cable. It is not a fault with the USB port on the PC. WORKS IN MY MAC, not in PC.
    Any suggestions?

If your PC is a desktop, connect it to a rear port on the PC, connect your keyboard and mouse, disconnect all other USB devices and disconnect from any other network you are on:
You may also have to update or reload the USB Root Driver:

  • Why does my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" not recognise DVD-R discs?

This "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B" drive on my machine does not recognise DVD disks. I then remove the DVD disks and load them into another drive on the same machine where they are recognised immediately.
As the dual drive setup is very handy I'd like to have both DVDs working again.
I have been tried to update the firmware for my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" but it fails to complete and this message appears:  "The update did not complete successfully, (9994)"
I would appreciate any help with this issue.

  • Will hp dvd+r dual layer discs work in a Mac book Pro??

I'm trying to do some iMovie archiving and I'm having real problems with my burner!! Many times it says "lost communication with disk drive" ! What should I do?!?! Please help me, or I won't have a Mac book Pro for long!
    Thanks
    -Tim

The only DVD +R DL disks I have ever found to work are Verbatim. Fuji and Memorex are worthless. maybe HP are made by Fuji or Memorex.
Try Verbatim before you give up. Do NOTHING else at the time you try to burn a DL disk.
Frankly for their (DVD DL) outrageous cost, limited capacity and marginal performance, a small external FW drive will be 100X faster right now, and cheaper in the long run.

  • DUAL LAYER BURNING for Power MAc G5 dual 2.5

I am trying to upgrade my manufacturer installed superdrive ( PowerMAc G5 2.5 dual late 2005 model) I was wondering if any body could help me choose the right one. I was thinking on buying a Pioneer 16X DL SuperDrive DVR 111D .
    Please advice
    Thanks

Which DVD drive is reported by System Profiler? Look under the Hardware > Disc Burning section.
I ask because Apple has been known to disable certain features (including DL burning) in some of the drives they ship. For example, some G5s shipped with a OEM Pioneer DVR-117D which is really a dumbed-down version (slower burning, no double-layer support) of the double-layer burner, the DVR-108.
A firmware flash with the official DVR-108 firmware can restore this missing functionality.

  • "Wait Function" swf works in Mac, Not in Windows

    Hi,
I have got a Flash movie [swf file] that plays the intro
    part("Scene 1", 1) to ("Scene 1", 55), and then go to
("Scene 2", 1) smoothly in Mac environment. When I run the
same swf movie in windows, it plays the intro part only and then
stops. It does not go to Scene 2 at all.
I am making use of a wait function in the actions.
I changed 'frame number' ("Scene 2", 1) to 'label' ("Scene
2", "start") and tested it again, but it still does not work in
windows environment but runs smoothly in Mac.
Kindly advise what is the problem exactly.

It turns out I was wrong: this function did work. However, when I then saved the file as an SVG, Illustrator ignored the document proportions. To correct this, I had to set the export option preserveEditability = true (of all things ...). Apparently it's a feature of Illustrator CC to not include the document proportions in SVG files by default.

  • Why my iChat AV only work with Mac not PC

I've been use iChat to communicated with my parents for couple year. (I have a PowerMac G5 with external iSight. They have a PC and runnning AIM 5.9 version.) Everything works fine until recently I purchased a 15" MBP. I always got "User did not respond" whenever I try to connect with PC from the MBP. So, I did a test on Mac to Mac with my sister in-law. It works fine with her. What is worng with the new MBP? Now I always have to go back to my G5 when I need to talk with my parents. It really bothers me that my new computer isn't working. I am going to sell my G5 soon. I need the MBP work with them. Does anyone knows what can I do to make it work with PC and Mac both? (I have a Comcast Cable at home and I don't know anything about the modem..., small apartment with Airport Express. Both computer are pretty close to the Airport.)

    HI Laggard,
As Rj says it will be useful to know your set up.
However we are likely to send you to this site at some stage
    http://portforward.com/routers.htm
We use it for reference only in the first instance.
After you have found your device you can click on it in the list.
This choose iChat from the next page.
It will then show a page that will tell you the default IP and user ID and Password you will need to access it in a web browser.
When you get this far it can be a question of loking at all the pages.
You will certainly need to look at any Port Forwarding (Virtual Server/Pin Holes) pages and tell us if there is any setting.
Also look to see if you have UPnP as this is easier to set up.

  • Working on Mac, not PC

We have created some .swf files that are being served by a
PHP script that we wrote. All works correctly on a Mac, but on a PC
(in both IE and FireFox), the link does not work. The links are not
embedded into the .swf files because they are attached by the
    program.
Any idea on what is going on and how I can make it work on a
    PC?
The link below illustrates the issue. This page randomly has
    two .swf ads on it.
    Link that shows
    what I am talking about.
Thanks in advance for any help! We're new to creating .swf
    files for the Web.

The links work, but you are launching popUp windows, and most
modern browsers block them. Your MAC seems to be set up
    differently

  • 16:9 Widescreen only works on computer not in DVD player

OK this is weird, I created a DVD using one of the new widescreen themes. It works fine on the computer and shows in a widescreen format, but when I stick it in a DVD player it shows as 4:3 and I've tried it in several players that all work with other widescreen DVDs.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Saundhaus!
Several thoughts. It's a known, and reported, bug in some of iDVD's theme sub-menus. The following, (which takes longer to write than actually do, so don't panic!) refers to PAL, but substitute NTSC where it says PAL and you can't go wrong!
HOW TO MAINTAIN 16:9 ASPECT FROM IMPORT TO BURN
This is the way I do it. There is no compulsion on you to do it my way, but this works (for me). I started this method before iMovie and iDVD were upgraded to 6.0.3, and because not all elements of the various iDVD themes (particularly the pre-iDVD 6 ones) are consistent in keeping to 16:9 throughout the process.
The widescreen preview works just fine when you check your finished project within iDVD. The problem only happens when you either burn a project or save it to an image.
A bug in iDVD 6, particularly when working with PAL, and which has been reported to Apple, is that the sub-menus in many of the themes (the chapter settings) default to 4:3 aspect, NTSC and mpeg 1, instead of the desired 16:9 in mpeg 2 in PAL. This may be partly a leftover from iDVD 5 or even a newer ‘feature’ of iDVD 6. Either way, it is annoying when it happens, and we must hope Apple cure it in iDVD 7. In the meantime here is my failsafe workaround, which sounds a lot more complicated when reading about it, that it is in practise.
Living in the UK, I use PAL (25 fps). Wherever you see a reference to PAL (25 fps) in the following you may substitute NTSC (30 fps) in the various settings mentioned (if you don’t live in Europe), the basic idea is the same. I still use this method, and take these steps, regardless of whether it is always necessary. Worst case scenario: it would have worked anyway. Best case scenario: it works perfectly where it otherwise wouldn’t!
The object of the exercise is therefore to ‘fix’ all constituent parts of the project (video, titles, theme, effects, even audio!) in the desired 16:9 aspect to avoid producing a DVD where the movie is in 16:9 and the menu is in 4:3 or where other irritating surprises lurk in your project, which you only discover after burning a coaster!
First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
You have finished your iMovie project with music, transitions and so on, and saved it to you Movies Folder. Before you started the project you naturally set it to DV Widescreen.
Open iDVD. Give the project a name, and save it as Widescreen if it didn’t default to the same aspect as your iMovie project. Now import the iMovie project into iDVD, choose a theme (any theme you like, even if it prefers to stay at 4:3) and save the project. Do what you would normally do to the theme and its drop zones. Save the project.
Now save as Disk Image on your desktop. Leave it there for the moment when it has finished/appeared.
Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click IFO.
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
    Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
If you have Toast 7 Titanium, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
If you don’t have Toast 7, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

  • Files work on mac - not on PC

I have a large amount (2,000+) video clips that were shot on a Sony Z1u and put into a Final Cut project. I have that project converted to Premiere Pro and am attempting to edit it on a PC. The files are saying that they are not supported in PPro. - "Codec missing or unavailable"
When I checked them on a Mac they worked just fine in PPro, QuickTime and in Final cut, and they appeared to be ProRes files. I have downloaded and installed the most recent version of QuickTime on my PC and it wont let me install the apple ProRes decoder for Windows, claiming to have a more recent version built in.
HOWEVER, I cannot see the videos when I play them in the QuickTime Player, they are completely white (but the sound DOES work). Again, these files will play just fine on a mac.
I am running Adobe Master Collection CS 5.5 with all components updated and installed, Windows 7 64x Professional v. 6.1.7601 SP 1 Build 7601. I have a EVGA GTX570, i7 Extreme processor and 8gb of RAM. I have all the dvx and xvid codec packages as well as the Windows Essential Codec Pack.
Here is one of the files if that might help reveal some special codec i dont know about or have overlooked -http://www.mediafire.com/?7irrtktrh6mi51z
How can I view these files and edit with them? What additional information can I give you about them to help?
(And in an effort to stave-off any mac vs PC debates, I have to edit on a PC.  I do not have a Mac capable of eidting this project, and I am working with 2 other editors who are also using PC workstations.)
I also do not have access to the original tapes.  I might be able to borrow a MacBook Pro to convert the files from there, if needed, but I have tried that once, and with no success.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for any help.  This is becoming a serious issue.

They're Apple HDV, not ProRes. QuickTime Player on Windows does not have a decoding component for these files--and as a side note, you don't need to install the ProRes decoder since that has been built into QuickTime Player for some time now.
Anyway, you can get a third-party decoder for these files: Calibrated{Q} XD Decode. Note that Apple changed something in QuickTime 7.7 and the Apple HDV clips will not work with it; you'll need to roll back to no later than 7.6.9 to use the component properly. You can get that version here: Old Version of QuickTime Player 7.6.9 Download - OldApps.com.
I have a method of converting these to a format that can be natively handled in Premiere Pro, but it's not really suited for large quantities of files like yours. Calibrated XD Decode isn't exactly cheap ($130 on sale right now), but it will get you up and running with minimal effort--that's probably worth the admission price.

  • How to eject a DVD from Power Mac G5 CD/DVD drive?

I already know the trick about holding down the mouse button while the computer starts up, and whatever is in the CD/DVD drive will eject. But that does not work in this case, because my computer will no longer startup. No startup chime. The power light comes on, and that is it. It is possible that the DVD in the drive may be causing the problem, because I can hear the computer checking the drive at startup, and then the startup sequence stops. Besides I need to get the DVD back to the movie rental place.
My old PC had a small hole that you could insert a paperclip in to force a CD/DVD drive to eject, even with power off. I don't see that on this computer (Power Mac G5 [late 2005]).
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

    Hello,
See if iTunes can eject it.
    A Dozen ways to eject a CD/DVD...
    http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/08-2002/08-12.ws
    Might try this...
    >On your main hard drive, dig down into System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Inside that window, double-click on the icon called Eject.menu.
    http://www.creativetechs.com/tips/quicktips_51.html
And one more way I'd not heard of...
The old iMac didn't have a disk inside, but the mechanism was "frozen" for some reason. I took a long strip of plastic and ran in and out of the superdrive slot; eventually, the drive made that familiar mechanical the usually occurs after ejection.
    Can't eject disk - with a twist!
